Will upgrade help me?

Background:
I currently have more photos than hard drive space. After modifying, printing, etc my photos I have been then burning them to disk and erasing them from the iphoto library to make room for new pictures. I have an external hard drive but never did figure out how to let iphoto manage my library AND us an external drive to do this. When I tried just referencing it eventually my library got all messed up.
Questions:
Can I use an external hard drive but have iphoto manage my library with iphoto 6 and I just don't know how to?
Would an upgrade to iphoto 08 help me use my external drive but NOT have to do any special things to manage my pictures but instead let iphoto just manage everything?
Is iphoto 08 any more external hard drive friendly than iphoto 6
Thanks so much for any help.

April:
It depends on how you organize photos in iPhoto 6. If you use rolls as the primary organizational tool and they are in an order that you've created via roll renaming, it might be a little difficult to switch. iPhoto 8 has changed rolls to events and those events are arranged by date. That's OK when you're importing from a camera as it will use the EXIF Captured Date to make events for files with those dates (depending on the Event prefereces you set, i.e. 1 week per event, 1 day, 2 hrs, 8 hrs). Since you'' be copying folders or CDs of files into iPhoto 8, you'll want to set up the Event preferences as seen in the screenshot so each folder/CD will end up as one Event. However, that event may not have the correct date. I've not figured out what date iPhoto uses when importing files from CDs or other sources. It sometimes looks like the File Created date and other the file Modified date.
I like iPhoto 8 for it's editing improvements and it's ease of publishing web galleries. A big improvement IMO.
If your photos are on disks and not in folders you might want to first copy them to a folder on the Desktop, name that folder with info regarding content and date ( I use something like this for each shoot or import: 09/20/07-08/04/07-Christening and Birthday). Then even if the event is out of order date wise you can easily find it, reset the dates with iPhoto's new Change Date feature.
The event feature does take a little getting used to but it's not hard to get the hang of. Start with only a few imports from CDs and experiment with getting the event date the way you want, etc. Once you're got a workflow organized then you can attack the rest of the CD.
IMPORTANT: I forgot to ask how were those CDs burned. If they were via the Share->Burn menu option then all you need to do is create a new iPhoto 8 library, mount the CD and copy the photos/rolls/albums to the new library. This demo shows albums being imported from disk but it also works for rolls. If you burned rolls that way they will be imported as Events and the keywords and comments will be maintained.
I can't say you need iPhoto 8 for organizational reasons but for its new editing and gallery features I would recommend it. It is better but a little different and takes a little getting used to.

  • Will upgrading help

Hi everyone. Been a while since I needed to post in the discussions...a good thing.
I have a small inn that consists of two buildings on one lot, us in the main house and guest rooms in the other. I have free wifi for my guests. My guests have not complained about my connection speed, but when I am full and everyone is using their computers or mobile devices, I am sad about how much they slow ME down. I am wondering if an airport extreme with an airport express to boost my signal in the guest house will be any better than what I am currently using, which is:
8mg cable connection (this upgrade made NO difference at all)
    WRT54G Linksys Router
Wireless G Range Expander in the guest house (location is about 50 ft or a little less from the router.)
I understand that if they are gaming online or streaming video in their rooms I am out of luck. But if I can get any noticeable increase in performance I am willing to put out the bucks. What do you all think?

+as electrically, the houses are separate entities+
yes, that may be the real problem
+it would require me to hand out ethernet cables to each guests, and they take off with things all the time+
no ! the airport express' would act as wireless access point(s) in my scenario
    consider this:
let's say you have a time capsule or airport extreme base station. each have, besides the WAN port, 3 LAN ports. attach 1 of the microlinks to each of the LAN ports (this is in your house).
in the guesthouse, (if it were electrically on the same circuit) you could use an outlet in any of the rooms to plug in the other of the pair of microlinks, get a short ethernet cable to connect the airport express to the microlink. set up the express' to join and extend the network provided by the TC/AEBS in the main house (which you access wirelessly with your lappy).
any of the gurus on this forum, _please correct me if i'm wrong_ but i have some wireless dead spots in my house and have been theorizing about above being possible.
i have one of the new, simultaneous dual band TCs which, accidentally, allow you to create a +dedicated guest network+ http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/wireless.html
    from apple's site:
+Share the Internet securely with guest networking.+
+Now it’s easier than ever to allow guests to use your Internet connection without sharing your password or giving them access to the rest of your network. Simply enable the new guest networking feature using the AirPort Utility application and create a separate Wi-Fi network just for your friends. You can set up this guest network with a different password or with none at all. Your primary network — including your printer, attached drives, or other devices — remains secure+.
maybe it just takes a +really long+ extension cable ...

  • IPhoto tooooo slow (spinnging wheel).  Will upgrading help?

I saw a previous post about a user getting the spinning wheel when working in iPhoto. I followed Lori's instructions to create a new library, but t's still happening. I'm using iPhoto 2 - just never got around to updating. I've ordered iLife so I'll get i Photo 6 in a few days. Could this resolve the problem? I only had about 2500 photos in my library (about 5000 now in the new library). I can't even sit and remove the doubles from the new library because I get the spinning wheel too frequently and it stays toooooo long. Thoughts???

You will see a MAJOR increase in speed over all those versions

    E-mail me [email protected]

Your suggestion of breaking up the export to pdf into sections of pages was excellent. I don't know why I didn't think of it...maybe because I was in panic mode.
For anyone else who experiences this problem, I exported 50-page sections to pdf with no problem. I now have 7 hi-res pdfs, but that's no problem. The printer should have no problem dealing with it. No error messages came up.
The only thing I can think of is that InDesign couldn't export that many documents (148) in the book palette to hi-res pdf, and it has no error message available to explain the cause—either outside ID's ability to process or out of memory, even though I have 16G of RAM.
    Thanks again for your help!

I have old MacBook running OS 10.6.8 I was told in Apple Genius Bar that I need a code from apple support to upgrade to 10.7.   Apple support will not help because I am have their support plan.  Can some one help?

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

    No. Only processor speed.
Does Compressor or FCP use GPU during transcodes or log and transfers for either encode or decode?
No. Only Motion and Color, and a few plugins (FXPlug) in FCP utilize the GPU. Compressor, FCP log and transfer...that's processor power.

  • 10.3.9 - Will upgrading to 10.4 help me catch up with the rest of the world

    I have a 1.25 gHz, 17" iMac running 10.3.9 with 512 MB of RAM.
My problem is that the world seems to be moving away from me.
More and more websites say my Flash version is too old for them; YouTube tells me my browser is no longer supported to name but two of the problems I now face. As far as I know I have the latest version of everything (Flash, browser etc.) that will run on 10.3.9.
I gather the latest OS my Mac can run is 10.4.11. Assuming I can track down a copy cheap, will installing it resolve some of these type of issues?
The thing is, I'm a bit anxious about upgrades generally. From my modest experience, I've found that every time you do it you fix one bug and introduce six more which then starts you on a costly spiral of software purchases and hours and hours of setup headaches and learning curves in order to get you back where you started. I've spent a long time getting my system working in harmony with my various external devices and if it were down to me I'd just leave it alone. But sadly the world won't let me.
I realise this is a policy thing from the software industry, but for folk like me for whom cash is tight it's frustrating. I'm happy to live without new features - I just don't want to lose old ones.
So will upgrading make any difference at all to my issues or should I stay put?
Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

Here's the spec page on your iMac. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac1.25_17fp.html It's capable of running Tiger 10.4 or Leopard 10.5.
Here's the Tiger & Leopard requirements.

*Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements*

Either OS will run on 512MB RAM, but would run better with 1GB RAM. Tiger will probably be OK for another year or so, then you may begin to have the same problems you are experiencing with Panther. I made the Panther to Tiger upgrade on a G4 desktop & G3 laptop without problems.
Tiger & Leopard install DVDs are in short supply and are no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources for Tiger, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ).
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

  • Beige G3 upgrade help needed

    Hello everybody.
I have a few questions about upgrading the G3 if anyone would be willing to help.
First of all, I must tell you that I am new to the apple world, having been for most of my life a PC/windows user.
    The story so far:
I was given a beige G3 desktop by a friend who had upgraded to the G5. I decided to use the G3 as a web browser and general 'lifestyle' computer as I use my PC for business.
However the G3 was a little old and outdated as it was for my needs.
    G3 266MHz
    256MB RAM
    6 MB VRAM
    6GB HDD
    Mac OS 8.6
I couldn't even get it online as the modem cable had been lost long ago (it had been connected to my friends office network)
I tried building a modem cable myself out of a printer cable and a PC modem cable and that, as you can imagine, failed in a major way.
I did a bit of research and found out that OSX can connect to a windows network so I set about getting a copy of jaguar.
Once I got hold of a copy of jaguar (from applerescue £28 inc delivery)
I installed it without a problem and connected to my windows network allowing me to utilise my existing broadband connection.
Excellent, thought I, but why stop there.
I have built and upgraded many pc's in my time and I had a few components hanging around. Will they work in the G3?
    One way to find out.
The first problem I encountered was one of cables and space. As you all probably know the beige G3 does not have much room inside for extras.
I also found that the desktop case was not suited to the environment. It took up way too much space on my desk. I couldn't put the monitor on top of it as it is a big heavy 20inch crt (my friend is a graphic designer) and there is a shelf over my desk that prevents it. However there was a space under my desk which the case would fit in perfectly, if only it was on its side.
Merely putting the case on its side didn't help. The design of the case meant that the thing kept falling over. The cds would fall out too and I had no idea what damage it would do in the long term.
So, junior hacksaw and drill in hand, I set about a major conversion.
A day later I had sucessfully ripped all the components from the G3 case and fitted them in a standard ATX PC case. Now it fits under my desk perfectly.
I fitted the original apple PSU inside the case and fitted the ATX PSU on top.
I spent a little money online and got a 1GHz G3 upgrade from OWC.
(A brief word about OWC. Ordered Sunday evening, package delivered with no VAT or customs charges on Wednesday! Better delivery than a UK vendor and loads cheaper too!)
I used some PC100 RAM I had lying around from a previous PC build.
Standard crucial 184pin SDRAM. Worked no problem. I ordered an extra stick of RAM along with the CPU upgrade.
So I now have a G3 in a ATX tower case.
    1GHz G3 CPU
    768 MB RAM
    Original 6 GB hard drive
    Extra 17GB hard drive
    Mac OS X
Loads of extra room inside for extras.
I run the hard drives and the motherboard plus a heatsink/fan on the CPU from the apple PSU and the optical drives and a few extra fans from the second PSU.
Sorry that was a long read but I tend to get carried away when I am talking about computers.
Here are some problems I am having which I hope you kind, clever people can help me with.
    1. I have a missing hard drive.
I have two ATA hard drives on the internal IDE channel 0 which work fine-ish (see question 2)
I have the original apple CDROM as master on internal IDE 1 and a small 1GB hard drive as slave on internal IDE 1. The small hard drive doesn't show up on the desktop. I can see the drive in disk utility but I can't do anything with it. It is not greyed out but any erasing or partioning gets so far then just stops. However, opening disk utility during installation doesn't have the same problems. I can erase and partition the drive and it shows up with the second listing under the name of the disk. Once OS X is installed it shows up on the desktop perfectly functioning. Once I have restarted it is gone again.
I read somwhere that having a hard drive and CDROM on the same IDE channel can cause problems, is this what is happening here?
I have a yamaha CDRW on the internal SCSI bus, if I use that as my CD drive and remove the CDROM from the IDE channel will that help (I'll try that anyway)
    2. The original apple hard drive works so much better than the extra drive I fitted. I installed a 17GB drive as master and have installed OS X on it but it is so slow. I know the drive is 4600rpm but I can't believe how much faster the apple hard drive is. I have installed OS X on both drives and the difference is stunning. With OSX installed on my 17GB drive it takes just over 14 minutes to boot up, with OSX installed on the apple 6GB drive it is more like 2 minutes. I know that the 17GB drive is old and slow but that is a big difference. Could it be a driver problem?
I have looked around online for drivers for the hard drive but, as I said before, being new to the apple side of computers I don't really know where to start looking.
    3. I have installed an unsupported USB card. It seems to work fine. Everytime I boot up I get a message saying:
'over current warning - the usb device installed is drawing too much power, the hub it is attached to will be disabled.'
I click okay but the thing still works!
I have a wireless mouse plugged into it and it works fine even though it has been disabled.
    Is this going to explode?
The words 'over current' sound scary.
    4. Harking back to question 1. If I disconnect the CDROM on the internal channel to enable me to use my third hard drive, will I be able to boot from the SCSI CDRW?
    5. Can anyone suggest a good system monitoring program? As mentioned I bought a CPU upgrade and I am a little suspicious about it. I want to know what speed it is running at. The docs that came with it say the the apple system profiler will not give the correct reading of CPU speed and I should use CPU director instead.
Call me cynical but is it possible that the CPU I bought is not what it says on the tin.
ASP says it is 333MHz and it should be 1GHz. CPU director does indeed say it is running at 1GHz but can I believe that? It is, in my opinion, possible to write a piece of software to give the wrong CPU speed thereby allowing someone to sell a 333MHz chip as a 1GHz chip and saying 'only our software can give correct readings'
I had the same thing with a broadband supplier recently. My connection was really slow for days. I ran several online speed checks to ascertain the speed. Out of the six speed checks only the suppliers own one said I was getting the connection speed I should have been, all the others gave really low speeds which reflected in the fact that it took an age for a web page to download, not something you should be getting on a 2Mbit connection.
On the phone to the suppliers customer services and they refused to take any speed check but theirs as true. I ran theirs and it always came up with the same number. 'Then your connection is working perfectly' they said. The five other speed checks and my own eyes told a different story but they wouldn't have any of it, instead telling me my PC was to blame, even going on to tell me to disable firewall and antivirus and run my PC in safe mode with no startup programs!! ********. Anyway, I want a third opinion about processor speeds so if anyone could tell me the name of a good program to do this (preferably free) I would be grateful.
Thanks for any help any of you can give me. I am learning more and more about apple hardware by the day and I am fast becoming one of the converted.
    broddr

    Hey guys,
    thanks for answering so soon.
    To answer the questions asked:
The motherboard is either a rev b or c. I remember checking this when I first had the idea of upgrading the cpu. I am not sure if it is a b or c but it is definately not rev a.
I think the cpu upgrade is working fine.
As Frank mentioned, it seems most of the cpu speed utilities use ASP for their information and give exactly the same speed reading.
I went a little more basic.
I ran CPU director and put the cpu speed at 333MHz and timed how long it took a few apps to open, then used CPU director to put the speed up to 1000MHz and timed the same programs again.
The speed difference was more than noticeable so from this I can only assume the CPU is running at 1GHz.
I have installed 9.2 on a seperate partition but it seems to be a weird version.
It came with a freinds G5 software for his iMac and is labelled 'additional software'
I installed it on a whim (because I am like that) and it gave me 'classic support'
I can now run classic apps in OSX and I have, on occasion, been able to boot into the 9.2 system. Only occasionally though.
Once booted into the 9.2 system there is no optical drive support and hardly any of the options I remember from OS8.6.
From this I am assuming that it is a cut down version of 9.2 bundled with new iMacs to enable users to use classic apps.
That doesn't explain why sometimes I can boot into it though.
Any of you heard of something like that.
I am planning to purchase a full copy of 9.2 when funds allow.
I have disconnected the CDROM which is on the same IDE channel as my third hard drive and used the cuda button to force the motherboard to recheck its hardware. Upon boot though the only difference it made is that I didn't have a CDROM. The third hard drive was still awol.
The SCSI yamaha CDRW is bootable but that makes little difference as disconnecting my IDE CDROM makes no difference on whether or not I can see the third hard drive.
I do know about the 8GB partition and OSX is sitting on the first partition which is 7.95GB.
I tried using xpostfacto to get around this which kind of worked. It did allow me to put OSX on a larger partition but caused no end of problems at boot so I cleared NVRAM and erased all the hard disks and started afesh.
The 17GB hard drive is in fact 15.91 GB, sorry about that. It came in a PC I bought which was (incorrectly) labelled as having a 17GB hard drive and since then I have just called it the '17GB hard drive'.
Since I last wrote I have done a little more research on the hard drives and found that the 6GB original apple drive and the 15GB drive are both 5400rpm so that cannot be the problem.
Here is some more accurate information on the drives:
    IDE 0-
Master - 15.91GB Fujitsu MPE3170AT - seems to work fine apart from the aforementioned slowness - first partition is 7.95GB with OSX installed.
    Slave - 6GB Maxtor 90651U2 - works fine
    IDE 1-
Master - Matshita CR57 CDROM - works fine and is bootable.
Slave - 1.19GB WDC AC21200H - this is the one I just cannot use or see.
SCSI internal - Yamaha CDRW - works fine and is bootable.
Could the problem be that I have overloaded the internal bus by having four devices on the IDE and a SCSI device?
I have since used a program called disk warrior which states that the 1GB WDC disk is of an unrecognisable format.
I have sucessfully used disk utility to zero it out but it makes no difference.
I think it may just be trashed.
The USB card is still a puzzle.
I am, right now, using a mouse plugged into the USB card which is, according to OSX, disabled.
    Scratching of head.
Maybe it is still functioning because the apple PSU has lots spare to give because I have a second PSU taking a lot of the strain? I just don't know.
This whole boot time thing is puzzling to the extreme.
As I said before. I have installed OSX on the 6GB Maxtor drive and the machine starts up in under 2 minutes so I can only assume that there is no hardware problem elsewhere.
When I use the Fujitsu drive its 10 - 14 minutes. So from that it is logical to assume it is the hard drive. Maybe it has a really small cache or something. Or maybe the apple just doesn't like it much.
Once the machine is up and running it runs just fine. A few programs like entourage are a little slow to boot.
I don't know what the benchmark is as I have never used an Apple except this one.
For instance safari takes around 2 seconds for the icon to stop bouncing and about 5 seconds in total to be up and have loaded the home page. Is that about normal?
Another question I have to ask you fine fellows.
Can you move some of OSX's built in applications and utilities to a seperate partition and still have them function properly?
I would like to use the apple hard drive as the OSX installation disk but at 6GB, once I have installed the OS there ain't much room left for anything else.
I have already installed MS office and Appleworks and a few other apps to a separate partition and they work fine.
I suppose though that if I did that and the problem is slow access to the fujitsu disk, once I installed OSX to the apple disk and installed apps to the fujitsu disk I would still have problems accessing those apps.
i don't know really. I think I am going to have to take the machine apart again and experiment until I can find the problem.
    Another quick question.
Could it be RAM? Surely either RAM works or it doesn't right?
My system is correctly identifying the 768megs of RAM, if there was a problem with the 512MB of PC100 RAM I installed it just wouldn't show up.
Anyway, thanks for all your help so far,
I think I am going to save some cash and buy a new Apple machine - any suggestions which?

  • Will Apple help me with this issue?

    Dear Sir or Madam,
I am a student in China, I really need your help, my iphone now problems bothers me! HELP ME PLEASE!!!
As I bought my iPhone 4s(16GB,White) in the USA from Sprint, full price with tax,  unlocked ,it was excepted to be a global phone. But now I come across with some problems in China  using local carrier. Now I am in China, not the normal use of the phone, I rely on odd jobs to earn, very not easy, English is not my mother tongue, maybe there are many grammatical mistakes, I hope you'll forgive me! Mobile phone can not be used normally I am very sad, I can not contact the parents and friends, can not let them worry about me, I've tried all means, including the upgrade to 6.1, but still can not solve the problem, I think maybe I am in China, so can not be used normally, at this moment I am very anxious, because of the time difference, it is later I can send mail, you can see it, please help me, a Chinese student's request!
I tried all the possible solutions from the Internet, and the Official solution offered by Apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4459), but it doesn't seem to work.
Will Apple help me with this issue? Please do.THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

We are not Apple, and Apple does not unlock phones. Sprint will unlock phones, but you have to qualify. One of the qualifications is to have been a customer in good standing for a period of time. You can check their website for what that is. After that, they can unlock the GSM side of the phone for International use, that is it. If you are on a CDMA carrier, then it cannot be unlocked. Are you trying to use a local SIM card in China?
Your only option is to contact Sprint to see if you qualify for an unlock. Only they can unlock it. Sprint is one of the poorest choices to take to another country.

  • Will upgrading ram improve speed in Mac and windows (VMware fusion)?

I Am using VMware fusion for music production and that program requires a lot of workspace. I have a MacBook Pro 4gb ram and when I turn VMware on it goes to 2 gb ram in Mac and 2 gb ram in windows. My Mac speed is normal when VMware fusion is turned off but when I turn it on my Mac is very slow. Will upgrading ram improve speed in mac and also in windows (windows is also very slow)
Btw my english isn't very good

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM hungry.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
In your case it will most likely help. You should plan on at least 8 GBs or more, depending upon what your model supports.
