Will upgrading iphoto delete my pictures?

I had to upgrade iPhoto to share them via email. Since I did, I had to upgrade my software system, and after restarting my computer, I got a message saying: "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete." Does this mean all of my photos will be lost? I didn't back them up, because I didn't expect any of this to happen. I have a lot of pictures to get out to people right away and I cant if they're deleted.

Upgrading will not lose your photos. The meassage means exactly what it says
"Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade.
However since things do go wrong sometimes you must always have a good, current backup. If you do not sooner or later you will lose all of your files including your photos

  • Will upgrading iPhoto delete all my pictures?

Hello, I just upgraded my computer to Maverick and now iPhoto isnt working and says I need to upload.  I have the upload however I was wondering if it would delete all my pictures in the process?

Hello, I just upgraded my computer to Maverick and now iPhoto isnt working and says I need to upload.
Probably the error message was to "upgrade" and not upload, right? Older versions of iPhoto are not compatible with Mavericks, and because your iPhoto library has been created by an earlier version of iPhoto, it needs to be upgraded to a new format, so iPhoto '11 can open it.
Your photos are stored in the iPhoto library and not in the iPhoto application, so upgrading to the new iPhoto version will not delete your photos. But as a precaution make a backup copy of your iPhoto library, before you let the new iPhoto upgrade it, this is best practice when upgrading software -  just in case, so you can revert to the previous version if need be.
What is the iPhoto version you are upgrading from?  If it is iPhoto '07 or earlier, you need to run iPhoto Library upgrader first, before you can open the library in iPhoto '11, see this document:

What matters is the version of iPhoto you have on the different machines. Can you tell us what they are, and what exact error message you get.

  • *problem shown with images* Iphoto deleted my pictures, unable to see them in iPhoto Library Manager either

Hello everyone! First post here. I have searched endless amount of forums and finally decided to post my problem.
Today my images from Iphoto went missing. When I tried to open the iphoto app, it gave me an error that the files were unreadable and therefore not imported.
Then I tried to rebuild iphoto by holding down option and command. I tried every option and it would still show my iphoto as 0 pictures.
I tried to view my images by going to the show packages option but it doesnt display the masters or originals files..
lastly I downloaded the Iphoto library manager and it was able to detect my pictures, but I could not see them or import/rebuild the library.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? When I tried to view the images it also shows a white triangle with a question mark in the middle. I beleiev the caption also says missing.tiff. Any help would be appreciated. I just recently got my macbook air so I have not done any backups.

I also noticed that my photo booth pictures got deleted as well. I'm trying to recover images through a recovery software and it does give me the option to look at the masters file, but there is nothing in there...
Also how could the Iphoto manager show that I have the 900 pictures? even though I am unable to actually see the image.. Could it be these pictures formats were changed somehow?

  • Iphoto deleted my pictures

I bought and external hard drive to back up my compute before I took it to the geek squad. I backed up my documents and when I went into iPhoto to back those up the iPhoto app promoted me to set it up and all of my photos were gone. I've tried going into my folders and right clicking on my pictures and show package contents and everything and nothing is there. I don't have Time Machine set up and I'm trying to stay calm but I have a two year old and all of my pictures of her are in there and so are my wedding pictures. Let me know if anyone has an idea, if at all possible, on how I can get my pictures back.

Why did you take your Mac to the Geek Squad to begin with? Is it possible your photos were already gone as a result of whatever problems already existed?
Quit iPhoto if it is open. Navigate to your Pictures folder and open it. Usually, Pictures is shown in a Finder Sidebar. Double-click the iPhoto Library icon. That will launch iPhoto, with the contents of that Library.

  • HT204490 will deleting iPhoto delete my pictures if they're in Photos?

want to clear up some space and omni disk cleaner is telling me that iPhoto is taking up the most space. if i delete iPhoto, will my pictures also delete even if they're in the new Photos app?

No - there is no connection between iphoto and Photos libraries - you can delete either with no effect on the other
However it probably will not save much disk space wince Photos and iPhoto use hard links to share access to the photos so little space is used by having both libraries available - see Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
and be VERY careful using any cleaner program including Omni Disk Cleaner - they are very dangerous and do not understand database systems like iphoto and Photos and often cause major problems with photos and even the system by deleting the wrong things - best not to use them at all

  • Did iPhoto delete my pictures? Can I get them back?

All my phots in iPhoto are gone..
I saved them while traveling both in iPhoto and in files on my desktop.
Home again, I deleted the files on my desktop, checking all the time, that the photos weren't being deleted from iPhoto. I turned my computer off, and a few hours I had to show some of my pics to a friend, and the were ALL gone!!
What do I do?/what did I do wrong?
Is there ANY chance I might get them back - those are picture from 3 months of traveling...
    Please help - thank you!

What system and iPhoto versions are you using.  Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Will the IOS7 update delete my pictures?

if i update to iOS7 will it automatically delete my pictures?

No, but you should be moving or at least copying your photos from your iPhone to your computer on a regular basis.  See this on how to do that.

  • I am using iPhoto 2009.  If I empty the trash bin, will it delete those pictures from albums I have created?  I noticed some of the pictures appear to be the same in both the trash and album.

I have a lot of photos in my trash bin and was thinking about emptying the trash.  However, I got a message that said that if emptied, I would not be able to recover them.  I chickened out.  I looked at several pictures in the trash and noticed that they were the same pictures in albums that I had created.  I compared the numbers shown on those pictures in the trash and found that they were the same as the numbers shown in on the pictures in the albums that I had created.  I would like to delete the pictures to create more space, but I don't want to lose pictures that I can't replace.

yes - albums are not copies or places - they are pointers in the databae pointing to the photo in the library - you can see it in an album, under photos or under events - but it is all the same photo - if you delete it it is gone everyplace - and no additiponal space is used for an album (or many albums - a photo can be in many albums without using any additional space
Only put photos that you do not want to keep in the trash
How much free space do you have on the disk volume that the iPhoto library is on?

  • After upgrading to Yosemite I had to upgrade iPhoto and now it says I need to update my photo library or it will be lost...HELP

After upgrading to Yosemite, I had to upgrade iPhoto.  Now when I try to open iPhoto I get the following message:
The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade.  The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete .
Question is...how do i upgrade the photo library?

You can't back up an open iPhoto...
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Cannot delete certain pictures in Iphoto on my IPad. no trash bin option for these particular photos.

I am having trouble deleting certain pictures on my IPad. They are jpeg pics but by selecting them individually under the photo icon or by using iphoto they will not delete. No trash can icon will highlight to drag them to. I believe there may be dublicate pictures so when I select no trash can appears. I can change to a different date with no dublicate pic and trash can appears. I am doing a backup of my Ipad and maybe I have to go to factory default and start over!!

How did these pictures get on the iPad?
If they were synced to it through iTunes on a computer, then the only way to delete them, is to un-sync them the same way.

  • I just downloaded iPhoto 9.5 to replace my old ver. 7.x.  Downloaded the library upgraded but have no idea where it installed as it is not listed in Applications.  Opened iPhoto added my Library (12.5 GB) but iPhoto shows no pictures.

I just downloaded iPhoto 9.5 to replace my old ver. 7.x.  Downloaded the library upgraded but have no idea where it installed as it is not listed in Applications.  Opened iPhoto added my Library (12.5 GB) but iPhoto shows no pictures. In fact, iPhoto indicates that I have zero photos in the library while at the same time indicating the file size as 12.5 GB.

If your old iPhoto version was iPhoto 7, you need to run the iPhoto Library upgrader:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1523
It will install itself in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder.
Run it, and after that, you should be able to open your iPhoto Library with iPhoto '11.
