Will upgrading iTunes cause a problem for existing iPod?

My wife has a nano that has been established on this PC and I just got a 30GB iPod video model that I want to put on this PC. iTunes said that my iPod cannot be recognized unless I upgrade our verion of iTunes. Will this harm the library that my wife already has in iTunes?

Will this harm the library that my wife already has in iTunes?
Default settings in Windows XP place your song files in the iTunes Music folder which, along with the Album Artwork and Previous iTunes Libraries folders and the iTunes Library files , is found at C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \My Documents\My Music\iTunes - far away from the iTunes program itself which is located at C:\Program Files\iTunes .
Although iTunes certainly makes use of the contents of the iTunes folder - among other things the library files tell iTunes exactly where to find the song files which are, of course, necessary if iTunes is going to play any music or transfer it to your iPod - the folder is not actually a part of the program so upgrading iTunes should have no effect at all on the contents of the iTunes folder ...
... but ...
... one of the funny things about computers is that sometime, somehow, somewhere when you least expect it , they can do some not so funny things, like losing data that they're not supposed to. Which is why it's a good idea to always have a back up copy of any data (such as your music) that you value in reserve ... just in case.
There are a variety of ways of doing so but for most people it probably comes down to one of two options.
The one this article in the Apple Knowledge Base describes in detail uses iTunes 7 to burn a back-up copy of the contents of your iTunes Library and the Library files - but not the Album Artwork or Previous iTunes Libraries folders - to CD's/DVD's.
You can use other storage media besides optical discs for your back-ups. The main alternative is to save a copy of the iTunes folder on a separate hard drive. Some of our Discussions regulars are quite fond of that approach .
If, when and how you choose to back-up your music is your decision to make - just bear in mind that as far as I know we've never had anyone post in these discussions who's regretted creating a back-up copy of their iTunes Library.
But we often hear from people who regret not having done so.

  • Will 'Double NAT' cause any problems for me?

    Hi there
I have just received a Netgear VMDG280 Cable/ DSL modem/wireless router from Virgin Broadband in the UK and I plugged it into my Airport Extreme 802.11n base station. The internet works fine but the amber light remains flashing, warning me of a Double Nat error.
I can easily select for my Airport to 'ignore' this Double NAT error message, but am worried that by ignoring this warning, I might compromise something important in my whole broadband set up. Could it also reduce security etc?
Essentially, Im not doing anything fancy with my wireless network, besides running a Macbook Pro, Iphone, Ipad and friend's laptops etc.
With Double NAT existing on my network, will this affect the service I will receive in any way? Or can I just put it out of my mind?
    Many thanks
    Dan

+If I operate Airport Extreme in Bridge mode, will that mean that the technical quality and security of the Airport Extreme base will be bypassed in favour of the Netgear?+
    No
+if the Netgear is classed as the lesser device of the two, shouldnt the Airport Extreme handle the more important tasks rather than being a passive 'bridge'+
The Netgear is already configured as the "main" router on your network. It is what we call a "gateway", a combination modem and router on the same chassis. The AirPort Extreme does not include a modem, so if you wanted to make it the "main" router on your network, you would need to purchase a separate stand alone modem and then set up the Netgear as a "bridge". That gets really complicated.
If you are seeing no adverse effects of the Double NAT, you can choose to "ignore" the message and the light will turn green. If you want to do this, open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup, and then click on the word "Status" on the summary page. Click "ignore" regarding the Double NAT.
Networking rules specify that you should try to avoid the Double NAT situation if possible. On a simple home network this is not usually a serious error, but it can slowdown internet browsing. If you plan to add a gaming console and want to play online games with other people, then the Double NAT will probably prevent you from doing so.
My suggestion to place the AirPort Extreme in bridge mode was just that...a suggestion. If you are happy with the performance of your network now and simply want to get the light to turn green, you can choose to "ignore" the message.

The Videos are showed up front 4 months, but now they are no longer to be seen. When you star a video first the hard drive starts, but then it stops and hangs up. I have to restart it, starting with the apple logo....

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

I am a first-time iPad owner/user. I bought a relative's original iPad. I want to leave the apps on it and add my own pdfs to read. My itunes account is really for my iPod. iTunes message says that if I "Sync" the iPad will be erase, and become like my iPods. If I make a new iTunes account, would the apps be erased when I tried to use it?
How can I just get my files onto this iPad, and still have the apps that my relative left there for me?
    Thank you.

iPads sync to 1 computer only.
All media and apps are tied to the Apple ID that purchased them.
Without your relatives ID and password, you cannot update any of the Apps.
I am pretty certain he is also violating Apples terms of service by giving you the apps.

What matters is the version of iPhoto you have on the different machines. Can you tell us what they are, and what exact error message you get.

My iPod touch is a model MB528LL and runs version 4.2.1.  I would like to download the At Bat 12 app. (the $14.99 version) so I can listen to professional baseball games this year.  Will there be an app. available for my iPod this year?

I went to the link you posted and followed all the steps.  I was thrilled to see that it worked!  I don't recall whether my PC still recognized my iPod Touch as a camera or not, but DEVICES did show up in iTunes and it recognized the name of my iPod Touch.
Now, though, everything is back the way it was.  The PC tells me I have a camera connected via USB and iTunes doesn't even have DEVICES listed in the left-hand column.
I'm wondering if this is the problem:  I had the iPod on until the battery was so "low" that it stopped.  I didn't press and hold the button on top.  In fact, until I read the article you linked to, I didn't even know you could turn the iPod on and off that way.  I would only press it once until the screen turned blank and simply pressed the Home buttom to turn it back on.  Until I read that article, I thought the Home button was the On button.
So now my question is this:  Should I ALWAYS turn the iPod off by pressing and holding the button on top until I see the red slider on the screen?
    Thanks!

    Do you mean iOS 4.2.1?

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Is there an upgrade option to Windows 7 for existing Vista notebooks?

Toshiba are currently offering upqrades to Win 7 for purchaseers of *NEW* machines with Vista.
What is Toshiba policy for users of *existing* machines with Vista? Will Toshiba provide an OEM upgrade/replacement route or will I have to buy Win 7 commercially?
If I buy and install Win 7, will it invalidate the Toshiba guarantee?
Will Toshiba support continue for a machine upgraded to Win 7, or will OS support be 'transferred' to MS? What will happen if there is some hardware problem, and MS say '+contact your manufacturer+' and Toshiba say '+contact your OS supplier+'?
Toshiba provide a number of tools for mainainting the machine (drivers etc.). Will these be supported/available under Win 7?
    many thanks

    Hello guys
Can we please end this never-ending discussion with some facts?
The situation with driver support is always the same and similar by almost all notebook manufacturers. The same situation was with Vista in the past.
Official Win7 will starts when the first Toshiba notebook come on the market preinstalled with Win7. On Toshiba support page first drivers, tools and utilities will be offered for these new laptops. In next few months Toshiba will offer more and more drivers for old notebook models. I hope you can understand that all this cannot be done over night and for all notebook models at the same time. all these drivers must be adapted and tested. It takes a time.
The question is how many old models will be Win7 supported. This question can nobody answer but I think models produced last year should be fully supported. Lets see.
So I think this with Win7 is clear now.
About warranty you don't need Toshiba but just to check some threads on this forum. It is answered, I believe, 100 times. On your notebook you can install what do you want. It will NOT cancel your valid warranty. Preinstalled OS has nothing to do with warranty. You can install WXP, Linux whatever you want.

  • Will there be a download for existing ipod nano 6th gen owners?

I just wanted to know if existing ipod nano 6th gen owners will be able to download an update for the new features?

There seems to be some confusion about old vs new 6th gen nanos and this update.
What was announced was ONLY a software update. For those of you that bought your Nano 6th Gen last year, you will get ALL the features noted in the release yesterday.
The most common confusion seems to relate to the fitness app and using the step count dongle with Nike+. There is NO NEW HARDWARE in the Nano to allow the device to work without the dongle. The folks at Apple have worked their software Mojo to allow the accelerometer to do the job of the dongle that used to get stuck in your shoe.
    Hope that helps,
    i

  • How to install the itunes on windows ME for play ipod nano

I buy the ipod nano, but i don't know how to save the music my ipod nano by itunes, because i cannot install the disc on windows ME,PLEASE HELP

Sorry, but itunes cant be installed onto a windows ME machine, it is too old an operating system. You can:
    1) Take the nano back if its within your stores money back time and buy another player thats compatable.
    2) Upgrade to a better OS, windows XP is usually the one thats most available.
    3) Install another player. Through one of Bruce Hoover's posts i learned of XPlay2, a free trial program downloadable from MediaFour.com that will let you do most things with your ipod that itunes would, including updating and restoring software. The only thing you cant do is buy from the itunes music store.
    Hope this helps
P.S Thanks to Bruce Hoover for info on a previous post

  • How to upgrade from 10.3.9 for 8GB IPOD Nano(requires mac OSX v 10.4.11 or

I want to download itunes onto my new ipodnano 8 GB.I have 10.3.9 and how do I upgrade to the best version for this? It is frustrating to have to keep paying.

Here's the requirements for both OSs. In reality you need at least 2 times the minimum RAM specified.

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check this web store http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
