If you're using multiple partitions, no. If you're using an image with Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion, only if an Erase & Install is done.

  • Will installing mac os 10.6.3 wipe off my hard drive?

    Hello
I have a macbook running on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and want to upgrade it to 10.6.3. I have the operating system disks. I haven't backed up my hard drive. Can I install the new operating system without fear of wiping off my hard drive?
Please only answer if you KNOW FOR SURE...>I don't need anyone to say 'maybe' 'probably'....
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I agree with the former poster. It is not a question of if data will be lost, but when. Furthermore, not every piece of software that is compatible with 10.5 is compatible with 10.6. If you don't backup your data, don't come and complain when you have to erase your machine just to downgrade back to 10.5 to regain some sort of compatibility. Read my upgrade FAQ*:

If you follow it, you should not have any problems.

  • Can I delete the songs off my hard drive?

I have an 80 gb iPod, but no where near that amount of space on my hard drive. I was wondering if I needed to keep the songs on my hard drive to keep them in my iTunes and iPod, or is it possible to delete them and still have them available. I'm almost positive this isn't the case, but I figured I'd ask someone else.

Follow the instructions in this article; you can then delete songs from your computer without them being deleted from the iPod automatically. If you do this, you should keep another copy of the songs, as they can easily be lost if they are only on the iPod.

  • Power Mac 7200/120 won't boot off new hard drive. Says HD "not supported"

I just recently came into possession of a PowerMac 7200/120. The only thing it came with is a boot cd with Mac OS 8.1. It booted fine off the cd with only the date/time issues of a dead PRAM battery, but when I tried to boot the internal HD on its own, it was a no-go. Flashing ?. When I tried to verify the HD, the software would not even find the HD. Not even listed on the program. You can't initialize what isn't there, so I ordered a new HD from an online vendor. I replaced it according to the directions on the Apple .pdf file I googled. I also reset the logic board and replaced the PRAM battery. Upon booting after all this ... still flashing ?. I run the same verification process as before and I actually DO see this HD listed, but it says it is "not supported" and doesn't allow me to initialize it. It's virtually the same quantum fireball HD with the Apple logo as the old one I just took out, just a different GB size. Connections and slots are all the same. Is this just not the right HD for my computer? Is there something I need to download? I just rebuilt a Performa 6300cd with ZERO issues.

Ok ... a couple of mistakes on my part which of course could change EVERYTHING. I'm embarassed with the amount of mistakes in my own question. A couple of forgetful omissions on my part ...
#1. The drive DID start up just fine upon first switching out the HD. Original software on HD was 8.1, but as I needed to run older programs not compatible with 8.1, I initialized and installed 7.5.3 clean. (I know ... HUGE omission here, but be kind as I've been working on multiple computers and it has been a couple months since I did this). It worked fine after download. After coming back to this computer a couple of months later, I get the flashing ? again (like before the HD switch).
#2.The HD the online vendor sent me was not the one I ordered, but ended up being a carbon copy of the one I took out except the GB size (which was actually larger than the one I ordered). Didn't physically count the pins, but it plugged in fine. Everything fit.
#3. I also forgot to mention that while the CD drive worked, the floppy either spat my disks out at me or asked to initialize them. These were the same floppies that I took out of my Performa literally a minute earlier (which worked).
#4. The 8.1 cd is a mistake on my part again. Turns out it's the black-faced 7.5.3 cd (7200, 7500, 7600, 8500, and 9500 series). Got confused with the 8.1 drive.
    UPDATE
The strangest thing ... I just booted up off the cd and it's now reading the HD. I ejected the cd and booted it up on its own ... and it works just fine. I did NOTHING since I asked the question. In fact, I just booted the computer back up in response to your response.
Before I delved into these boards and bothered to ask for help ... I had opened it up, cleared out a TON of dust bunnies with my can o' air, pressed the CUDA? chip, and then replaced the PRAM battery. Restarted holding down cmd-opt-p-r until it chimed again and it was still a flashing ?. You could hear it clicking as if trying to start the drive up at regular intervals. I restarted the computer well over 10 times hoping it was just something jammed up in the HD (though just bought) and it was the same flashing ?. And now today ... did nothing and it boots up just fine. I check the drive setup lite and it now shows macintoshHD there (instead of unsupported drive - original showed nothing at all).
Does it take time for the PRAM battery or logic board to reset? Did it just needed a thorough internal cleaning? Or should I chalk this up as just being a really old comp?
I really don't want to go delving back into it now that it's working to check the SCSI terminations, jumpers, etc. I'm going to assume those are ok now it's booting.

  • Will upgrading to 10.6 from 10.5 free up hard drive space?

This may sound strange but I thought I read somewhere on the Apple site that 10.6 consumes less HD space than 10.5. I guess the first question is: Is that true?
If yes, then does that mean that if I upgrade to 10.6 from 10.5 I will net more available space on my HD?
    Thank you,
    Marcantonio

  • I am trying to play my digital music off a hard drive onto my home stereo.  I would like to know if the mac mini can just hook to my processor and play music through the processor(preamp) on my home stereo speakers?

I currently have a nice home stereo component system.  I also have a 500 GB external hard drive loaded with music.  I am looking for a way to play the music off this Hard Drive onto my home stereo system.  I currently have a WD home entertainment box that I can play movies that I download off the Internet on my TV, of course piped through my home stereo for the sound.  I would like to know if the mac-mini could be used in this form also.  Just have the HD hooked to it, the TV would become my monitor and the mac mini would play the music ... RANDOMLY ... with the use of iTunes.  This of course would be hooked up to the home system with an hdmi cable and the HD hooked up through a USB connection.
Just would like to know if this could work?

    Yes. Is the short answer.
You can directly connect the speaker out port of the Mac mini to an input on the AV Receiver which then feeds your speakers. This would be an audio only solution. If you use a TOS-Link connection this will be a pure digital connection ensuring the best quality (important for audiophiles).
You can if you wish connect the video from the Mac mini to the AV Receiver, and if you have a Mac mini with HDMI or a Mini Displayport you can run the audio and video via a single cable. (Older models would use two cables, the aforementioned TOS-Link pus a DVI to HDMI cable.)
If you do connect the video output from the Mac to the AV Receiver you can then display this on your TV, and have as one possibility iTunes displayed with perhaps one of the iTunes visualisers playing along with the music. Another possibility would be to use FrontRow on the Mac.
A different approach would be to have the Mac mini stream over a network to a device e.g. the Sonos Zoneplayer which is then connected to the AV Receiver. An AirPort Express is also able to do this.

  • Pop up windows are loading to the right (off the page)

I have a 27" new iMac. In Safari when I open some pictures or pop up window they load far to the right cutting 1/2 of the window, off the screen. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    Quit Safari if it's open.
    Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For LIon:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

  • How do you keep videos on the ipod but off your hard drive?

When i tried to keep the videos off my hard drive but keep them on my ipod it deleted them off of my ipod also. is there any way i can just keep the videos on my ipod, but off my computers hard drive? thanks,
    keith

you could simply add your movies to your ipod by syncing them. Adn then afterwards remove them adn manually manage your music on your ipod syncing with new music you want to add. Or another way is to burn your movies to a disc adn then whenever you want movies on your ipod then you can iport the movies from the disc to your harddrive and then sync your ipod and then manually manage your itunes adn sync of new music.

  • Will upgrading to Snow Leopard affect my Windows 7 boot camp partition?

    Hi,
Did some preliminary searching on this before posting but couldn't find with confidence my answer. Does anybody know? Details below.
Q: Will upgrading to Snow Leopard affect my Windows 7 boot camp partition?
I'm running 10.5.8 on a single drive with two partitions. 1st partition for OS-x is extended (journaled), 2nd partiction (ntfs) has solid version of Windows 7 RC, build 7100 running.
    Thanks.

    Hi Michael,
here are some nice 'Myths and Facts' about Intel Macs and BootCamp http://refit.sourceforge.net/myths/
Bottom line: while not exactly needed for installing Windows on an Intel-based Mac, the BootCamp Assistant 'streamlines' the process with a nice GUI (no need for 'cryptic' Terminal commands).
Mac OSX as of now (10.5 Leopard and above) plus the uptodate firmware for Intel-Macs already include everything needed to install and boot Windows.
Deleting or reformating an OSX partition does not affect the Windows partition.
However a repartitioning of course does, if the Windows partition is on the same harddisk.
But even a repartitioning of any other harddisk (ones that not have the Windows partition on them) does not affect the Windows partition.
Did that myself when adding/upgrading the harddisks in my Mac Pro.
Nonetheless, when 'fumbling' with harddisks and partition structure I always have backups of my important files at hand.
    Take care
    Stefan

  • Will upgrading to a new OS like Lion or Mountain Lion delete my previous files on my computer? Will I have to back up my files with a hard drive first?

Will upgrading to a new OS like Lion or Mountain Lion delete my previous files on my computer? Will I have to back up my files with a hard drive first?

Upgrades do not delete your personal files in the Home folder. But any installation can go bad, so it would be wise to backup your current system to an external hard drive.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

My iPad has deleted 700 photos off the photo stream on that device.  The pictures are still on my Mac iPhoto in the photo stream.  How do I get them to reappear on the iPad?

When did this deletion happen?  Which version of iOS 8 do you have on your iPad? Depending on your settings you may not see My Photo Stream on the iPad any longer.  With iOS 8 "My Photo Stream" will only show on the iPad, if you did not enable iCloud Photo Library (Beta).
