Will upgrading my OS be better?

Hi There,
I have a iMac G5 running OS X Panther. I was looking to upgrade to OS X Leopard and was wondering if upgrading OS will make the iMac better, will my iMac be better and more compatible with new software on Leopard than on Panther?
I am also having real issues with safari and it displaying websites incorrectly, it displays them on the left hand side of the screen in a navigation form without any pictures - How do I fix this?
Thanks - I Appreciate The Help

A later OS X version upgrade DVD is required for either Tiger 10.4 or Leopard 10.5,
then apply their appropriate Combo update (Tiger: 10.4.11 download / Leopard:
10.5.8 download) from Apple Software Update in the running computer...
Upgrades: cost. Updates: usually are downloads from the Software Update server.
Then, locate a compatible vintage version of Flash player from the Adobe Flash
Player support download page, the most recent will appear but will not function.
And, then look for a compatible web browser, such as TenFourFox, iCab (10.4/10.5)
& SeaMonkey PPC (for 10.5.x only) there are semi-current updates for these, for
use with PowerPC architecture. TenFourFox has its own web site. Older and no longer
supported vintage versions of FireFox, SeaMonkey, and others may be available, but
have security issues that later ones (including Mozilla-code builds TenFourFox) have
been able to overcome through use of custom builds of later code that works in PPCs.
The upgrade to a later OS X version involves buying a retail DVD for each version.
This can be hard to accomplish due to their no longer supported or sold in retail
stores; that status leads many to look online and pay a premium for clean old DVDs.
And they can't be grey label install-restore discs that were part of a specific Mac kit.
You may be able to obtain a 'Replacement OS X DVD for Tiger 10.4 ' - or, Leopard 10.5;
by calling Apple sales (main online store number, 1-800-MY-APPLE) or another support
number I don't recall, and ask for an Operating System specialist. For a time, they had
each of these separately available for a fee, only from Apple direct and not in the store
catalog so you could only order it by phone and by talking to a specialist or expert who
knows operating systems. The fee was reasonable, compared to finding an original retail
DVD that probably was previously owned (sold on ebay or maybe amazon, at times.)
You'd need to supply the computer serial number and some other information about it,
if you should be lucky enough to talk to the correct knowledgeable person to see if they
can check, to see if they still can sell you one or both of these White Label DVDs...
However outside of the US, this may be an even rarer option, though the Leopard 10.5
DVD could allow certain iDevices to function and sync with your vintage computer, so
that would let it do a few things (with vintage iDevice, not most recent iPod, iPhone, etc.)
Any retail version of Tiger 10.4 or Leopard 10.5 on DVD media should work, and may
be available from some online reseller of old-stock-new, or clean used, etc. Prices
for these original offerings with retail labels and part numbers implying such, are high.
And the computer could need a RAM upgrade, since a newer OS X will require more
system resources for it to function. And even more for a load of applications to run.
If the costs and unavailability of upgrades for the G5 PPC computer are too restrictive,
you should look into an Intel-based Mac; and read around to see which one(s) appear
to have been most durable for their vintage. Some resellers who actually repair Macs
for a living could a place to get a used model; check reputable shops with a good name.
For specs see everymac.com and if you can, see download mactracker.ca application.
And iFixit.com has info on repairing some models, not everyone does that; for ideas.
{An upgrade of software and maybe RAM, plus hard drive, etc, could be helpful
for the old PowerPC G5 computer to work better, while it lasts, but you may find
the limit to older versions of software -- and almost nothing new runs on them.}
Not sure what else to say or add, at this point...
Good luck & happy computing!

  • If I upgrade to 3.0 Beta, will my apps have all their saved data?

I want to upgrade to 3.0 Beta, but I don't want lose my app saved data (like my progress in Super Monkey Ball and Otto Matic)
If I "Restore" to 3.0 Beta, will I have my progress in those games kept?

I have 60 Apps installed and I haven't found anything in any one of them that doesn't work in 3.0
Before installing 3.0 make sure you do a backup in iTunes. After installing 3.0 iTunes will recognize the serial number and ask you if you want to restore it from backup. This will put all your applications, music, photos, settings... everything will be back exactly the way it was except you'll now be on 3.0
For those that keep pointing out that Apple recommends only putting it on iPhones dedicated to testing, you have to realize it's not just about buying another iPhone, you can only install it on an activated iPhone. This means $199 for the iPhone plus $39.99 a month to add it as an extra line. The more logical approach that I (and a lot of other people) took was installing it on my main iPhone and then if it is too buggy for everyday use, buy another iPhone.
Five days of use now and every one of the 60 Apps I have installed works just fine. And while the phone does freeze up periodically and need a reboot, it's nowhere near bad enough to get a dedicated phone for development. Of course someone else find it unacceptable, but why not try it first?

  • 10.3.9 - Will upgrading to 10.4 help me catch up with the rest of the world

    I have a 1.25 gHz, 17" iMac running 10.3.9 with 512 MB of RAM.
My problem is that the world seems to be moving away from me.
More and more websites say my Flash version is too old for them; YouTube tells me my browser is no longer supported to name but two of the problems I now face. As far as I know I have the latest version of everything (Flash, browser etc.) that will run on 10.3.9.
I gather the latest OS my Mac can run is 10.4.11. Assuming I can track down a copy cheap, will installing it resolve some of these type of issues?
The thing is, I'm a bit anxious about upgrades generally. From my modest experience, I've found that every time you do it you fix one bug and introduce six more which then starts you on a costly spiral of software purchases and hours and hours of setup headaches and learning curves in order to get you back where you started. I've spent a long time getting my system working in harmony with my various external devices and if it were down to me I'd just leave it alone. But sadly the world won't let me.
I realise this is a policy thing from the software industry, but for folk like me for whom cash is tight it's frustrating. I'm happy to live without new features - I just don't want to lose old ones.
So will upgrading make any difference at all to my issues or should I stay put?
Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

Here's the spec page on your iMac. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac1.25_17fp.html It's capable of running Tiger 10.4 or Leopard 10.5.
Here's the Tiger & Leopard requirements.

*Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements*

Either OS will run on 512MB RAM, but would run better with 1GB RAM. Tiger will probably be OK for another year or so, then you may begin to have the same problems you are experiencing with Panther. I made the Panther to Tiger upgrade on a G4 desktop & G3 laptop without problems.
Tiger & Leopard install DVDs are in short supply and are no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources for Tiger, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ).
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Im currently running Yosemite Beta 10.10, how do i upgrade to a non beta release of yosemite?

Im currently running Yosemite Beta 10.10, how do i upgrade to a non beta release of yosemite? downloading yosemite in the app store doesn't work, i get a box that say my purchase couldn't be completed at this time. what can i do?

This seems very odd that they would completely make an entire OS X release not available at all. This is also unfortunate because some of the software use has compatibility issues with Yosemite. Thanks for the responses I will contact my local retail store and post back if they give me more information or a solution.

  • Will upgrading to Snow Leopard affect my Windows 7 boot camp partition?

    Hi,
Did some preliminary searching on this before posting but couldn't find with confidence my answer. Does anybody know? Details below.
Q: Will upgrading to Snow Leopard affect my Windows 7 boot camp partition?
I'm running 10.5.8 on a single drive with two partitions. 1st partition for OS-x is extended (journaled), 2nd partiction (ntfs) has solid version of Windows 7 RC, build 7100 running.
    Thanks.

    Hi Michael,
here are some nice 'Myths and Facts' about Intel Macs and BootCamp http://refit.sourceforge.net/myths/
Bottom line: while not exactly needed for installing Windows on an Intel-based Mac, the BootCamp Assistant 'streamlines' the process with a nice GUI (no need for 'cryptic' Terminal commands).
Mac OSX as of now (10.5 Leopard and above) plus the uptodate firmware for Intel-Macs already include everything needed to install and boot Windows.
Deleting or reformating an OSX partition does not affect the Windows partition.
However a repartitioning of course does, if the Windows partition is on the same harddisk.
But even a repartitioning of any other harddisk (ones that not have the Windows partition on them) does not affect the Windows partition.
Did that myself when adding/upgrading the harddisks in my Mac Pro.
Nonetheless, when 'fumbling' with harddisks and partition structure I always have backups of my important files at hand.
    Take care
    Stefan

What matters is the version of iPhoto you have on the different machines. Can you tell us what they are, and what exact error message you get.

  • Will upgrading to osx mountain lion upgrade my Logic Pro 9.1.6 to 9.1.7?

I wanna know if upgrading m computer to osx mountain lion will upgrade my Logic Pro to it's current update to 9.1.7.
I wanna upgrade to the new osx im worried if it will update all my software as well

First, you can (and should) always back up your copy of Logic before updating, that way you can always go back to the earlier version if you need it.  If you do that you might as well update to the latest version of Logic.
Going to 10.8 won't update Logic, but you'd probably want to update Logic (and most other apps) to the newest versions if you do a major OS update like that.

Please could somebody help me I have an iMac which came with Tiger 10.4.10 installed I have lost my disks and I need to re-install after a hard drive failure. Where can I find this? I will upgrade to Snow Leopard after but I cannot go straight to SL

You can go strait to SL, all you need is a retail SL DVD available from Apple for $20. The US online store has them at:

  • Will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard delete programs?

Sorry if this is a stupid question or answered a million times before, but will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard stop my existing programs (PhotoShop, Office etc) from running? I've got an Intel MacBook but I've never installed a new OS myself, so any tips gratefully received! Thank you.

You will lose the ability to work in any Classic OS applications that ran under system 9.
If I were you, before upgrading do yourself a favor and purchase an external hard drive that you can "clone" your Mac to. If possible, a large enough drive that you can have 2 partitions. In one you would clone your current system and apps. Then after the upgrade, clone again your updated system to the other partition as a emergency backup.
With the clone of your current set up, if need be you can rebbot to it so that you can use any of your "old" applications.

  • Re: Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5, will upgrading to Lion, OS X 10.7, help with this issue?

I cannot upgrade my Mac to Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8 and cannot buy a new Mac so will upgrading from
OS X 10.5 to OS X 10.7 help with this issue?

If you are going tob e upgrading to 10.7 you should be able to just upgrade, and then install future updates of Firefox with no problem.

  • Will upgrading ram improve speed in Mac and windows (VMware fusion)?

I Am using VMware fusion for music production and that program requires a lot of workspace. I have a MacBook Pro 4gb ram and when I turn VMware on it goes to 2 gb ram in Mac and 2 gb ram in windows. My Mac speed is normal when VMware fusion is turned off but when I turn it on my Mac is very slow. Will upgrading ram improve speed in mac and also in windows (windows is also very slow)
Btw my english isn't very good

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM hungry.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
In your case it will most likely help. You should plan on at least 8 GBs or more, depending upon what your model supports.
