Will upgrading to lion cause me to lose any installed software (iLife, etc)

I have a Mac mini that I don't know that much about. It has Snow Leopard, but I need to upgrade to Lion to get the new SDK. Coming from the Windows world, you can lose everything that's currently installed when you upgrade operating systems. I don't have install disks for the software that came on my system out of the box. None of the upgrade tutorials that I've seen address this. Any advice?
Thanks!

Make a Time Machine backup and download a free/donationware copy of CarbonCopyCloner and also make a bootable clone of your system. This is just in case something does go wrong during the upgrade. Then you should just be able to install Lion over Snow Leopard and all your programs and settings should still be there. Just remember that any PPC programs will no longer be supported.

  • Upgrade to lion causes frequent forced quits in adobe software

After recent upgrade to Lion OS I have trouble running Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS 6 Beta.  Lightroom 4 frequently crashes upon opening.  Photoshop CS 6 is unable to open an image file from Finder, Bridge or Lightroom and also freezes up.  iMac no longer recognizes wireess keyboard strokes.  Have tried disk utility repairs and various restarts with key strokes to reset but they don't work after a short while. Any suggestions?

  • Will upgrading to mavericks cause me to lose my personal files?

by this i mean: photos, vids, apps, music
also will i have to resync my iphone to my itunes?

As with any upgrade DO A BACK UP FIRST, so you will have a source for your data should it be lost.
That being said said your data should still be there, if there is NOT a rpoblem with the download or update

Negative reviews are common place here as it is a trouble shooting forum. If you want to read the advantages, improvements and new features then go to the Apple site. If you are running Word 2004, Early Adobe suite, etc which are PPC programs, then don't update. Go to Apple logo in upper left menu bar, open About this mac > More Info > Software >Applications and sort by 'Kind' and look what PPC programs you have installed. If you are not prepared to upgrade these programs, then do not update to Lion.
There are plenty of threads to read up on about this here. But remember that 99.9% of comments will be negative, even though the forums represent only a tiny fraction of the Millions of Lion Downloads purchased and installed with no issues at all. So basically it's your call.
    Good Luck

Hold c and reboot off the 10.6 disk, run the installer.
If the machine your upgrading is the 2006, I'd highly advise you stay on 10.6.8
It's a 5 year old machine, you're in the last life stages of that machine and 10.7 will push it right over the edge.
10.6 is a GOOD upgrade for that machine, faster than 10.7 or 10.5.
And 10.6 will run your 10.5 software, 10.7 will not.
Get iCloud with a new 10.8 machine coming out after this summer, seriously.
Your machine is too old to bother with Lion.
Or else you can learn yourself and use this link to get back to Snow, good luck finding your 10.5 programs.

  • Re: Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5, will upgrading to Lion, OS X 10.7, help with this issue?

I cannot upgrade my Mac to Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8 and cannot buy a new Mac so will upgrading from
OS X 10.5 to OS X 10.7 help with this issue?

If you are going tob e upgrading to 10.7 you should be able to just upgrade, and then install future updates of Firefox with no problem.

  • Simple Answer - Will upgrading to Lion Break my Bootcamp Install?

I'm running Snow Leopard. I have an IMac with a 1TB Drive - I have 800Gig for Mac and 200 Gig Partioned for Windows through Bootcamp(Win 7)
I want to download and upgrade my Mac OS to Lion. I've read through a ton of posts on issues to do with reinstalls etc; but I jut need to know if I upgrade to Lion, will I also have to redo my Bootcamp as well?
    I plan to back up everything anyway, but I'd prefer not to have to reinstall all the Windows programs I use etc;
I'm not a tech geek so I'm just trying to figure out how complicated this install would be. If I didn't have bootcamp, I'd just do it, but getting Bootcamp installed and running the first time was a chore and I don't want to have to do it again, especially now that I have a Windows partition full of programs and data.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thanks for this. Makes perfect sense and this is the type of answer I was looking for. I could simply move a bunch of data off the MAc Paritition to make sure that there is enough HD Space. Looking at it now I have 188Gigs Free so I should be ok.
The other question would be, I have Bootcamp 3.02 now I think. I would have to upgrade this to 4.0 with Lion as I understand it? This would have to be done after the Lion upgrade?
Thanks so much for the help.

  • Will upgrading to lion erase photos

If I upgrade to lion via the app store, will it wipe out my photos and documents?

It should not if everything works perfectly.
I don't know about you but I am comfortable trusting my data to everything working perfectly so I back it up at least twice.
According to your profile you are still at Leopard, you must upgrade to Snow Leopard before you can upgrade to Lion.

  • Will upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion delete my Windows partition (bootcamp)?

On my other computer I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and the windows vista partition was completely deleted.  I was wondering if I upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion on my other mac with Windows 7 will it be affected, or in other words, is Mountain Lion Bootcamp compatable with WIndows 7. Should I save it to an external hard drive?
    Thanks!

No OS X installer deletes a Windows partition automatically. There is no reason for a Mountain Lion installer to do so when upgrading from Lion.
Nevertheless, having backups is always a good idea no matter what. If you don't have them, then this is a good time for them.

  • Will upgrading to lion/mountain lion erase bootcamp partition?

I am thinkng about upgrading to Lion/mountan lion, but was wondering if it will delete my bootcamp windows partition.  I have to use windows for some work taht I do, and would rather not have to spend the few hours to repartition and upgrade my copy of XP

If you're already running Windows 7, upgrading it to Win 7 Pro allows you to install XP Mode which is XP Pro running inside of Win 7 Pro. Depending on your Mac, XP Mode can run surprisingly fast. I'm doing that in Fusion. I don't know if Win 7 Pro in Boot Camp will equally support XP Mode, but since Microsoft takes care of the support for XP Mode, I doubt it would be a problem.

If you are running Lion first upgrade to 10.7.2.
Please let us know how page outs test (see below) under normal workflow. Then retest in 32-bit mode and with a restart running only Aperture.
First thing is to evaluate whether or not you have adequate RAM by looking at the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a typical Aperture work session; recheck after working and if the page outs change (manual calculation of ending page outs number minus starting page outs number) is not zero your workflow is RAM-starved. Ignore the pie charts and other info in Activity Monitor.
If your test showed that page outs increased significantly during operation you can
    • add RAM
    • and/or simply try to run Aperture by itself
    • and/or switch from 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation (which will make some additional RAM space available).

  • I want to upgrade to lion server but I need to install version 10.7 first?. Were do I find 10.7?

I have a mac mini server currently with OSx 10.6.8.  I want to upgrade to lion server but am told I need to install version 10.7 first?
Went to app store, cant find version 10.7. can anyone help me locate where I download server version 10.7?

The current version of Server on the MacApp Store has been updated
to 2.0 and requires Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8).  You could just
upgrade to Mountain Lion.  With the exception of some new features,
it is in reality an improvement to Lion.  The upgrade is cheaper as well.
If your Mini Server can be updated to it, you might as well just go with
    Mountain Lion.
You do realize that the OS and server are two seperate entities now?

  • If I upgrade my macbook pro from snow leopard 10.6.8 to mountain lion, will I lose any current software, files, or need to reinstall or reset anything?

I want to be sure that I won't lose things like microsoft office (I need excel for work) or my word files. Will I lose anything by upgrading to mountain lion? will I need to reinstall things or spend a lot of time restoring and resetting to get things set up as I have them now?

Probably not. Back up your computer first, and ensure that your applications are compatible wih Mac OS X 10.8; Microsoft Office 2004 and earlier aren't.

  • Upgrade to Lion Causes Black Screen On MacBook Pro

I read early discussion posts on this topic and thought by now Apple would have corrected this poblem but apparently not.  I updgraded my MacBook Pro last night to Lion and since last evening I have had 5 black screen (failures) and had to power off and reboot.  Is there a known correction or update to this problem?  It is extremely disappointing as I need my Mac for my business and cannot afford to send it to a depot for a five day repair.
This same problem was happening to me with an older OS but ONLY when I used both PowerPoint and Parallels at the same time.  For this probem I took the MacBook into the Genius Bar and had to leave it there through the weekend and all day Monday.  They told me after running multiple tests they found no hardware problems and the issue had to be software.  The only fix was a five day depot repair.  I thought I would manage by not using PowerPoint and Parallels together but now, with the Lion Upgrade it happens with ALL apps and when I simply try to read an email.  Very, Very DISAPPOINTING.  COME ON APPLE, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.  PLEASE.

Lion has been causing a lot of problems on older hardware, it killed a 4 year old 15" MBP on me.
Go back to 10.6, the stability of your business comes first.
