Will upgrading to lion erase photos

If I upgrade to lion via the app store, will it wipe out my photos and documents?

It should not if everything works perfectly.
I don't know about you but I am comfortable trusting my data to everything working perfectly so I back it up at least twice.
According to your profile you are still at Leopard, you must upgrade to Snow Leopard before you can upgrade to Lion.

Negative reviews are common place here as it is a trouble shooting forum. If you want to read the advantages, improvements and new features then go to the Apple site. If you are running Word 2004, Early Adobe suite, etc which are PPC programs, then don't update. Go to Apple logo in upper left menu bar, open About this mac > More Info > Software >Applications and sort by 'Kind' and look what PPC programs you have installed. If you are not prepared to upgrade these programs, then do not update to Lion.
There are plenty of threads to read up on about this here. But remember that 99.9% of comments will be negative, even though the forums represent only a tiny fraction of the Millions of Lion Downloads purchased and installed with no issues at all. So basically it's your call.
    Good Luck

    Hello:
It runs just fine here......so I doubt if any "fix" is coming since the problem does not appear to be a general one.
Have you tried trashing the preference file (com.apple.photobooth.plist) and restarting?
What do the logs indicate when it crashes?

  • Will upgrading my OS erase files?

Will upgrading my OS erase files?

No manner of installing an OS will erase any files.
However, you have two options with an new OS installation.
    1) A simple install "upgrades" your system, by replacing any part of the OS that is new and leaves many older files (especially any 3rd party extensions and add-ons) installed where they were originally placed. Some applications that are unable to run may be placed into a special folder. The risk here is that the older stuff may keep the new OS from performing properly or as efficiently as designed. It would be up to you to find those things and update or weed out what seems to be hurting performance.
    2) A clean install will wholly replace your old OS installation and everything will be completely and safely working the way Apple designed the OS to operate. The old OS will be stored away into another folder called something like "Previous Operating System." The downside here is that you will probably lose many of your previous settings you liked (like your desktop pictures, etc., anything you customized over the use of your iMac) and you will have to reset those things. And you will have to reinstall every non-Apple application, printer and/or scanner drivers, etc. that you desire to use with your iMac. One advantage may be that you can see if the new OS performs for you well, and then as you install new non-Apple stuff, if anything starts to go wonky, you will have a good clue what might be the culprit.
    Hope this helps.

  • Will upgrading to lion/mountain lion erase bootcamp partition?

I am thinkng about upgrading to Lion/mountan lion, but was wondering if it will delete my bootcamp windows partition.  I have to use windows for some work taht I do, and would rather not have to spend the few hours to repartition and upgrade my copy of XP

If you're already running Windows 7, upgrading it to Win 7 Pro allows you to install XP Mode which is XP Pro running inside of Win 7 Pro. Depending on your Mac, XP Mode can run surprisingly fast. I'm doing that in Fusion. I don't know if Win 7 Pro in Boot Camp will equally support XP Mode, but since Microsoft takes care of the support for XP Mode, I doubt it would be a problem.

  • Re: Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5, will upgrading to Lion, OS X 10.7, help with this issue?

I cannot upgrade my Mac to Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8 and cannot buy a new Mac so will upgrading from
OS X 10.5 to OS X 10.7 help with this issue?

If you are going tob e upgrading to 10.7 you should be able to just upgrade, and then install future updates of Firefox with no problem.

  • Simple Answer - Will upgrading to Lion Break my Bootcamp Install?

I'm running Snow Leopard. I have an IMac with a 1TB Drive - I have 800Gig for Mac and 200 Gig Partioned for Windows through Bootcamp(Win 7)
I want to download and upgrade my Mac OS to Lion. I've read through a ton of posts on issues to do with reinstalls etc; but I jut need to know if I upgrade to Lion, will I also have to redo my Bootcamp as well?
    I plan to back up everything anyway, but I'd prefer not to have to reinstall all the Windows programs I use etc;
I'm not a tech geek so I'm just trying to figure out how complicated this install would be. If I didn't have bootcamp, I'd just do it, but getting Bootcamp installed and running the first time was a chore and I don't want to have to do it again, especially now that I have a Windows partition full of programs and data.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thanks for this. Makes perfect sense and this is the type of answer I was looking for. I could simply move a bunch of data off the MAc Paritition to make sure that there is enough HD Space. Looking at it now I have 188Gigs Free so I should be ok.
The other question would be, I have Bootcamp 3.02 now I think. I would have to upgrade this to 4.0 with Lion as I understand it? This would have to be done after the Lion upgrade?
Thanks so much for the help.

  • Will upgrading to lion cause me to lose any installed software (iLife, etc)

I have a Mac mini that I don't know that much about. It has Snow Leopard, but I need to upgrade to Lion to get the new SDK. Coming from the Windows world, you can lose everything that's currently installed when you upgrade operating systems. I don't have install disks for the software that came on my system out of the box. None of the upgrade tutorials that I've seen address this. Any advice?
    Thanks!

Make a Time Machine backup and download a free/donationware copy of CarbonCopyCloner and also make a bootable clone of your system. This is just in case something does go wrong during the upgrade. Then you should just be able to install Lion over Snow Leopard and all your programs and settings should still be there. Just remember that any PPC programs will no longer be supported.

  • Will upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion delete my Windows partition (bootcamp)?

On my other computer I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and the windows vista partition was completely deleted.  I was wondering if I upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion on my other mac with Windows 7 will it be affected, or in other words, is Mountain Lion Bootcamp compatable with WIndows 7. Should I save it to an external hard drive?
    Thanks!

No OS X installer deletes a Windows partition automatically. There is no reason for a Mountain Lion installer to do so when upgrading from Lion.
Nevertheless, having backups is always a good idea no matter what. If you don't have them, then this is a good time for them.

  • Will downloading OSX lion erase Microsoft office '11

When OSX Lion becomes available for download, will it erase my Microsoft office suite '11. Because I don't have the disc. I just bought a one time user key.

No. But you should first make a full backup of your system for protection against data loss.
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Will buying mountain lion erase all my data?

I am quite interested in updating to Mountain Lion, as I have a very outdated Mac. However, I am worried that doing so will erase all my data. Also, will updating make my mac run faster? It has been working much slower recently. Its only three years old, 10.6.8. Please help!

    In addition to BT's comments:
The OS X update process will stomp on your /Applications, but not on the content in /Users, which is where your login directory resides. Good backup habits are sound advice.
Even if your three-year old Mac complies with the minimum supported hardware specs, it is very unlikely that a larger, more resource hungry Mountain Lion will give you more features and run faster on your hardware.
If you wish to stay current with OS X releases, at some point, you will need to step up to a new or refurbished hardware purchase decision.

    3) Will it resolve my certification issue and FIX my "Messages" and "Facetime" ??
    Please help me asap.
    Thanks in Advance.

Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First run Disk Utility Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported or reports "the disk cannot be fixed". Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install "in place" and shouldn't effect any of your own data or settings.

  • Will upgrading to Lion fix an invalid node error?

Hi. We have an imac running OS10.4.11. It is still running, but freezes occasionally. I finally ran disk utility and found out we have invalid nodes. I have tried running fsck, rebooting from the original disks, doing an archive and reinstall, and running disk utility from the original disk. All fail due to errors. I do not own disk warrior. What I'm wondering is: do I buy DW to try to repair the original or would buying a new HD and purchasing Lion and installing that fix things up? I want the most parsimonious solution here. After all DW might not be able to solve the problem, the OS is pretty old now, I do not want to buy a new imac at this time, and the rest of the imac seems just fine and dandy. Thoughts?

    Another vote for DW.
You must repair the HD, your best bet is likely DiskWarrior.
BTW, you might enjoy these DiskWarrior review/recommendations...
