Will upgrading to lion/mountain lion erase bootcamp partition?

I am thinkng about upgrading to Lion/mountan lion, but was wondering if it will delete my bootcamp windows partition.  I have to use windows for some work taht I do, and would rather not have to spend the few hours to repartition and upgrade my copy of XP

If you're already running Windows 7, upgrading it to Win 7 Pro allows you to install XP Mode which is XP Pro running inside of Win 7 Pro. Depending on your Mac, XP Mode can run surprisingly fast. I'm doing that in Fusion. I don't know if Win 7 Pro in Boot Camp will equally support XP Mode, but since Microsoft takes care of the support for XP Mode, I doubt it would be a problem.

If I upgrade to lion via the app store, will it wipe out my photos and documents?

It should not if everything works perfectly.
I don't know about you but I am comfortable trusting my data to everything working perfectly so I back it up at least twice.
According to your profile you are still at Leopard, you must upgrade to Snow Leopard before you can upgrade to Lion.

2011 MacBook Pro, 64 bit i7 quad core, upgraded to Lion OSx, Bootcamp installed with Windows 7, wanting to install Windows 8 (don't ask), tried downloading/installing bootcamp 5.0.5033 (both on the mac/windows partitions (actually using a parallel to run Windows)), error message something similar to bootcamp doesn't support this Windows
So the question is am I doing something wrong? Should I just try and install windows 8 through my windows 7 partition and see if I can use the bootcamp 5.05033. Or do I solely have to use the bootcamp to install Windows 8? I'm not too familiar with bootcamp and how it runs.

if you're using parallels and full bootcamp then you're making it 100% more troublesome for youself then it needs to be
bootcamp is running windows directly on the hardware this give full memory and cpu and 3d video game power
running windows in parallels is running a virtual machine where one can't run powerful games and the like but one can have it in a window and change fast between osx and windows
parallels as the only virutal machine (as far as I know) support not have the operating system as a file on the osx harddisk but can access a bootcamp parition as virtual machine but without the benefits bootcamps provides
it's a service parallels provide for those who want both to play games in normal bootcamp and sometimes use windows in a virutal machine
just install it like a normal virtual machine and you need not worry about bootcamp drivers and the likes
plus it would mean that the windows part would be a part of the timemachine bacup of osx
which it is not when it's in bootcamp

Negative reviews are common place here as it is a trouble shooting forum. If you want to read the advantages, improvements and new features then go to the Apple site. If you are running Word 2004, Early Adobe suite, etc which are PPC programs, then don't update. Go to Apple logo in upper left menu bar, open About this mac > More Info > Software >Applications and sort by 'Kind' and look what PPC programs you have installed. If you are not prepared to upgrade these programs, then do not update to Lion.
There are plenty of threads to read up on about this here. But remember that 99.9% of comments will be negative, even though the forums represent only a tiny fraction of the Millions of Lion Downloads purchased and installed with no issues at all. So basically it's your call.
    Good Luck

  • Will upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion erase my rEFIT dual boot Windows?

    Hi All,
At the suggestion of one of the users in a different section of the forum, I am posting my question here in hopes of finding someone who might have already done this upgrade and can speak from experience.
I have a MacBook Air that is currently setup to dual-boot OSX Lion or Windows 7 with Boot Camp. The Windows 7 was a requirement in order to be able to use my laptop for work. I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion but I also don't want to erase the partitioning on the hard-drive and I want to keep my Windows 7 installation intact. If I choose to upgrade (instead of a clean install) will this delete the Windows partition and wipe out my disk or will it retain my dual-boot option as it currently is?
    Thanks for your help.

Then wait on update, and plan to (goes without saying hopefully) to have  backups of both that you can always restore. Especially as this is a work computer in essence.
Lion had trouble until 10.7.1 and the Lion 4.0 Windows Support Software itself was buggy for those that were installing Windows (or upgrade their boot camp drivers with Lion's).
Until people look at the Lion Recovery partition and whether that changed in size or something, or other changes to the partition tables.
WinClone 3 and CampTune can both help preserve your installation and Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable backup of Lion and Lion Recovery, in addition to TimeMachine. (TimeMachine has been improved and more flexible).
And store your ML install package somewhere - given how slow it is DL'ing I'd wait days to even bother.

  • Will upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion delete my Windows partition (bootcamp)?

On my other computer I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and the windows vista partition was completely deleted.  I was wondering if I upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion on my other mac with Windows 7 will it be affected, or in other words, is Mountain Lion Bootcamp compatable with WIndows 7. Should I save it to an external hard drive?
    Thanks!

No OS X installer deletes a Windows partition automatically. There is no reason for a Mountain Lion installer to do so when upgrading from Lion.
Nevertheless, having backups is always a good idea no matter what. If you don't have them, then this is a good time for them.

  • Will upgrading to osx mountain lion upgrade my Logic Pro 9.1.6 to 9.1.7?

I wanna know if upgrading m computer to osx mountain lion will upgrade my Logic Pro to it's current update to 9.1.7.
I wanna upgrade to the new osx im worried if it will update all my software as well

First, you can (and should) always back up your copy of Logic before updating, that way you can always go back to the earlier version if you need it.  If you do that you might as well update to the latest version of Logic.
Going to 10.8 won't update Logic, but you'd probably want to update Logic (and most other apps) to the newest versions if you do a major OS update like that.

  • Simple Answer - Will upgrading to Lion Break my Bootcamp Install?

I'm running Snow Leopard. I have an IMac with a 1TB Drive - I have 800Gig for Mac and 200 Gig Partioned for Windows through Bootcamp(Win 7)
I want to download and upgrade my Mac OS to Lion. I've read through a ton of posts on issues to do with reinstalls etc; but I jut need to know if I upgrade to Lion, will I also have to redo my Bootcamp as well?
    I plan to back up everything anyway, but I'd prefer not to have to reinstall all the Windows programs I use etc;
I'm not a tech geek so I'm just trying to figure out how complicated this install would be. If I didn't have bootcamp, I'd just do it, but getting Bootcamp installed and running the first time was a chore and I don't want to have to do it again, especially now that I have a Windows partition full of programs and data.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thanks for this. Makes perfect sense and this is the type of answer I was looking for. I could simply move a bunch of data off the MAc Paritition to make sure that there is enough HD Space. Looking at it now I have 188Gigs Free so I should be ok.
The other question would be, I have Bootcamp 3.02 now I think. I would have to upgrade this to 4.0 with Lion as I understand it? This would have to be done after the Lion upgrade?
Thanks so much for the help.
    Tom

  • Upgrading to lion with bootcamp

I'm running OS 10.6.8 and unfortunately need Boot Camp with Windows.  I would like to upgrade to Lion but don't want to also go buy Win7 1 I'm currently using WinXP on the partition.  Can I do the OS upgrade without having to upgrade Windows XP to 7?
    Thanks

Back up your Windows Partition first. Installing Lion WILL Corrupt it without warning, effectivly destroying all your data. Happend on both of my Macs. Also happend to all these folks on Twitter: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=lion+windows+partition&lang=en

  • Will upgrading to lion cause me to lose any installed software (iLife, etc)

I have a Mac mini that I don't know that much about. It has Snow Leopard, but I need to upgrade to Lion to get the new SDK. Coming from the Windows world, you can lose everything that's currently installed when you upgrade operating systems. I don't have install disks for the software that came on my system out of the box. None of the upgrade tutorials that I've seen address this. Any advice?
    Thanks!

Make a Time Machine backup and download a free/donationware copy of CarbonCopyCloner and also make a bootable clone of your system. This is just in case something does go wrong during the upgrade. Then you should just be able to install Lion over Snow Leopard and all your programs and settings should still be there. Just remember that any PPC programs will no longer be supported.

  • Will formatting my hard drive remove my bootcamp partition? Also, downgrading...?

    Hi!
I have 2 partitions, one for Mavericks and one for Windows 8. I would like to do a clean install of Mavericks. I have already redownloaded Mavericks and I'm about to put it on a USB so I can boot from it and reinstall the operating system. I read somewhere that to format your hard drive and do a clean install, you have to boot into the USB and then you'll have an option to format your hard drive from there. I'm not sure if that's correct so that's another thing I would like to inquire about.
Another thing I would like to know about, although not relevant to my previous questions, is this: Is it possible to get a free download of Mountain Lion (legally, of course)? I would much rather do a clean install of Mountain Lion than Mavericks, but I've searched google and there seems to be no way to get it for free. However, I did read that it's possible to get it free within 30 days of purchasing your Mac but that 30 days have long passed for me.
So my 3 questions are the following:
    1) Will formatting my hard drive remove my already existing bootcamp partition? (If it does, I don't mind but I would still like to know)
    2) How exactly do I format my hard drive?
    3) Is it possible to get Mountain Lion for free so I can downgrade?
    Thanks to anyone who helps!

Formatting a HDD will delete all user data on the drive.  Yes you can do it on an older MBP by connecting to it via USB, but do you really want to?  If the repair shop says the HDD is functional, there is no need to wipe it and reinstall the OSX.  The problem then is something else.
It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
    Ciao.

  • What does upgrading to Mavericks due to my BootCamp partition?

I'm still running my OSX 10.6 that was upgraded to 10.8, but i haven't downloaded and installed 10.9 yet.  If I install Mavericks, will that make any changes to BootCamp or should that still function the same after the upgrade?  Right now my laptop boots to the Windows partition by default.  Do i have to upgrade bootcamp after?

From what has happened to me and it seems quite a few people is that your windows/bootcamp drive will either just not allow you to boot to it.  Or at worst you wont even be able to see it as an option when you hold down "alt" at startup.
In other words, Maverick really screws with the bootcamp partition.

  • Will downloading OSX lion erase Microsoft office '11

When OSX Lion becomes available for download, will it erase my Microsoft office suite '11. Because I don't have the disc. I just bought a one time user key.

No. But you should first make a full backup of your system for protection against data loss.
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
