Will using a 5400 rpm drive for the os/application be a problem?

I have an iMac that has a 5400 rpm drive that has FCP and Mac OS on it. Video will be edited from a connected FW 800 drive. Will the 5400 primary drive be a problem?
Thanks.

Did you install this as a replacement drive? AFAIK, iMacs have 7200 system drives.
But to your 5400 boot drive question, there are many FCP users happily editing with MBPs; I'd guess the majority of those laptops are 5400…I know mine is.

I installed the latest Win7 and Win8 drivers and the camera appears for Skype and in Device Manager as Integrated Camera under Imaging Devices, but does not appear in Devices and Printers. There is no VEN DEV ID property for the device. • Can't use my external hard drive for the time machine

I have a mac mini and i'm having a time trying to back data using the time machine to my external hard drive

you need to format the external drive. To do that (if haven't got anything important on that external hard drive at the moment) select finder > Go menue > then utilities > open disk utility > then select you external hard drive and partition it to the size you want and format it the Mac os extened journaled.
Once you have done the above, re open time machine from system preferences and brows the disk. Time Machine will then re format it to its own format and start backing up.....

My optical drive is broken, so i cannot insert my system software disc. Is there another way to repair my macbook with a flashing ? within a fold upon startup?

If you have another Mac you can you the target disk mode and have a look if you could access the hard drive from the other Mac. Could also be a hardware error on/with the drive.

  • Using USB 3.0 drives for program files.

Can Adobe Creative Suite programs be loaded on an external USB 3.0 Drive not to be used by other computers but to increase the speed of data transfer--if you only have a 5400 RPM drive for instance?

That would still depend on your computer and whether or not it can actualyl achieve and sustain those data rates. Just because it's USB 3, it must by no means be faster. The USB port could revert to a slower transfer mode at any time, there could be other I/O operations on your system, otehr USB devices could sahre the same bus and minimize throughput and any number of otehr things. Also of course you would have to define the drive as a swap/ cache drive in the first place and that would not be possible if it is listed as a removable drive. Photoshop and other programs only use fixed drives, meaning your USB device would have to have a specific driver to bypass this and be listed as an internal drive. So while on paper it may seem liek a good idea, in practice it's much more complicated.

I found information on how to transfer my itunes library to a new computer. I am going to use an external hard drive for this to transfer my itunes folder to the new computer.
I will then download and install a new version of itunes on my new computer.
My question is this. When I do this, will itunes have all my album artwork for all my library? My library has a lot of my own music and I have spent quite a bit of time copying album artwork that itunes did not add. I am really hoping I don't have to do this again!
    Thanks for your help!

Buying a new laptop.  My old Dell Inspiron is giving up the ghost.
How do I know if a core I5, 5400 rpm drive is good enough for me or if I should get a core I7, 7200 rpm drive laptop?  Also can I get an I5 with 7200 rpm or an I7 with 5400 rpm?  Need some recommendations.  I am not a computer expert so need some good explanation on what to get and why?  I don't do video games on the laptop.  Mainly use it for mail, Excel, word, internet searches, internet videos, etc.

I actually have the Envy Ultrabook is why I asked. HP provided me one for a testing unit so we here on the Forum could keep abreast of their latest offerings. The mSSD accel cache is amazing. It gives ultrafast boot times and hard drive access. It does make the laptop hard to work with for tekkies, but for most users who will not try to monkey around with the OS, like dual boot with Linux or reload with a clean install of your own Windows 7 and other similar stuff it is a great performer...no need for a 7200 rpm drive.

Do you get this window when you hold down the Command+Option keys and launch iPhoto?
If not then you're not holding down both keys long enough.

My system is Mac OS X v.10.6.8.
I used to work on my 3000 photos with GIMP on a P.C, but since I had a breakdown, I would like to carry on on my Mac as soon as possible.
Figuring out unaided a new OS after a breakdown is the best prescription for another breakdown.
Before going back to editing your photos, I suggest you need to familiarise yourself with your new OS. Get a book (eg, David Pogue's "Missing Manual…") -- now, that Lion's been out and about for some time, you can probably get the Snow Leopard (aka Mac OS X v10.6) edition at a discount. Take the time to read it and understand it, and you'll spare yourself a mountain of frustration. There are enough similarities between Mac OS X and Windows to fool you into believing almost everything works the same way, when, of course, it doesn't -- many similarities are only skin-deep.
Once you've done that, you'll be in a better position to install and use GIMP or look for alternatives.
where do I find the exact version (in french)
For French issues, you are probably better off checking the forums on MacBidouille or MacGeneration.

  • Trouble using the instrument driver for the "hp8753b"

I am using the instrument driver for the "hp8753b", specifically the "collect and display data" driver.  I manually set my settings to the analyzer and run the VI (i.e. set start frequency to 500 kHZ and stop frequency to 1 GHz), when the VI runs with the "collect and display data" it defaults to start frequency 1 GHz and stop frequency to 3 GHz.  I have tried to modify the driver to only collect data and not to modify any settings on the analyzer but I run into errors.  Any help on this is appreciated.

    Hello,
I have installed the instrument driver you mention in your post. I am looking at the Collect and Display Data.vi, however I need more information from you to determine why your sweep is defaulting back to 1GHz-3GHz.
When you say "I manually set my settings to the analyzer" are you making these settings directly on the analyzer? The Collect and Display Data.vi seems to read all of the settings from the hardware, I did not see any configuration in the VI.  What modifications were you making to the VI and what errors were you getting?
Can you see the range on the instrument?  If so , can you determine at which point the range defaults back to the higher range?  Running in highlight-execution mode in the VI and running NI-Spy (Start->All Programs->National Instruments->NI-Spy) to perform a capture of the GPIB commands can help to determine at what point the errors are occurring.  It will also let you see if there are any commands being sent which cause the instrument to be reset.

  • I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

  • Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW photo files from my camera, through the IPad and back to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras does not use an SD card.  How can I do this?

Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW files from my camera through the IPad and out to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line.  Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory.  Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive?  Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad?  Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips.  Internet and WiFi are not available.  Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad).  I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC.  I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips.  Is this possible and how would I do it?  I'd appreciate any guidance.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident.
