Will we ever be able to import RAW files from iPad camera roll into Lightroom Mobile?

Is this a planned feature, or should I look elsewhere for iPad photo editing?
I only shoot in RAW and I would sometimes like to do a quick edit in the field. As it stands, Lightroom Mobile is a completely useless application for me. Needing to import the photos to my Macbook in order to use a dumbed-down version of Lightroom makes no sense to me. Why do I need Lightroom Mobile if I need to have my computer with me to use it anyways?
Without this feature, I don't quite understand what Lightroom Mobile is supposed to accomplish. Is it purely for people who only own a desktop and need to perform basic edits on the go? Is that a large enough demographic to develop an entire app? Even if it is meant for only those people, it would still likely be far more useful to them if they could import RAW photos in the field and not have to stop by their studio/home to import and move into a collection first.

The likely real reason why Adobe doesn't do this yet even though many people have requested it is that it would cost them dearly in bandwidth and storage capacities. Right now only smallish lossy compressed, downscaled dngs or simple jpegs travel to and from Adobe's servers which is tenable. Sending full raw files from 24+ MP cameras is probably not something they can realistically do yet. Having the iPad try to generate the lossy dng will likely show how very low powered they are in comparison to a simple laptop and is likely not yet a realistic solution so you'd still have to send the file online and have the dng generated by a server.
I use the mobile thing for simple iPad slideshows and simple portfolios. The color is really good as the current generation of iPad screens is very well done with close to sRGB gamut. I'll sometimes do some simple edits but it is really not very useful for that yet. It shows promise but is not useful as a laptop replacement yet on trips. You're better off getting a lightweight laptop (many cheapo ultralight windows ones out there nowadays and the MacBook Airs are great for this) and running the full Lightroom on that if you are traveling.

  • Fuji raw files from iPad Camera Roll to Lightroom Mobile

I can not transfer Fuji XE2 Raw files from my iPad Camera Roll into  Lightroom Mobile. They will transfer from Lightroom 5.4 into mobile and can be edited which proves mobile can handle them. However not a lot of good for location use!
Does anyone else have this issue? Is there another way of transferring files within the iPad other than from camera roll?

Thanks for the quick response, although disappointing to hear. Surely that rather defeats the object!
Once you have them on your regular computer why would you then want to transfer and edit them on an iPad? I'm off on a weeks holiday and want to work on them while away.
There are other iPad apps that can import raw files but as I already use Lightroom I was hoping to use their mobile app.
    What a let down!!

Ok. That explains 8.3. I know some want to stay with 10.6 because they have software or hardware that won't work on anything later.

  • Importing RAW files from iPad into Aperture

    Hello,
While on the go, I used the camera connection kit to import some RAW files (.NEF from a Nikon D300s) into my iPad directly from the SD card. The files where correctly imported, they display perfectly in the iPad screen and I was surprised to see no lagging when zooming such big files.
Now the bad thing. When I got back home I tried to import such files into a new Aperture project. When I connect the iPad to my mac, although it takes some time, all the pictures are correctly displayed, but when I hit the import button, aperture keeps turning the task indicator wheel without ever importing a single picture! Cancelling the import task does not work and the only way to get Aperture to work again is by force quitting it.
    Any ideas?
Ps.: all my software is updated and running the latest versions (Aperture 3, mac OS X 10.6.4, etc)

The reason why the iPad shows the images so quick is because it is not showing the actual raw data like Aperture does. Instead the iPad does the same as the camera does when showing the photo on your LCD. Each RAW file has an embedded JPG preview. The iPad (and your camera) show that preview image. There is no raw processing happening.
Not sure why copying or importing to Aperture causes you trouble. As soon as I plug my iPad into the USB to my PC it shows up as a folder. I can copy the files from there to my computer.

You are using the word "RAW" but the camera does not shoot "RAW". Are you askign if you can import Z100 footage into PRemiere CC? Yes you can. I have some Christmas light footage I can play. Latest Adobe DNG converter (7.2) DOES indeed convert NEF pictures coming from a D600.
Head up to Adobe's website and download the app.
You'll only miss the focus information (focus distance and focus sensors used), but you'll be able to work with raw and not rely on jpg only!

  • Cant import raw files from pentax k20d

I have a Pentax k20d and iPhoto6 will only import JPGs. iPhoto will not import RAW files from my camera. I can't find if its supported but can only assume its not.

You'd think that apple would add raw file compatibility with the next of its numerous iphoto 6 updates...
I wouldn’t think that at all. Iphoto 6 has not been developed since 2006, nor updated since 2006. I would not expect any further enhancement to it.
or maybe its just the pentax as in iphoto 6's advanced settings there are options to "save edited RAW files as 16 bit TIFFS" and "use RAW files with external editor".iPhoto 6 has not been developed since 2006.
It’s not just the Pentax. Those RAW options are there in everyone’s iPhoto 6 and later. However, RAW formats differ not just between brands of Camera but also between different models of the same Brand. So, RAW support is added on a model by model basis and not all models are supported. The K20D was announced in January 2008. The RAW format you want supported didn’t even exist when the iPhoto 6 was in development or the current version of the application.
Further, as RAW support is a function of the Operating System, and involves a patch to the OS, it was added to the OS current at the time - 10.5.

  • Importing RAW files from Nikon D810 error

I have tried importing RAW files from my Nikon D810 into LR5 but get an error message that the files are not recognized.

Some D810 users on dpreview are finding problems with the "Camera..." profiles in the release version of LR 5.6.  They report some posterisation.  See http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54122110.  I don't have a D810 - only a humble D800 - and I've found no problems with that on LR 5.6, so can't confirm whether there's an issue with the new D810 profiles or not.
Edit: I've just downloaded a D810 NEF someone posted on that dpreview thread, and in LR 5.6 most of the "Camera..." profiles produce some posterisation, although Adobe Standard is fine.
If any Adobe staffers are lurking here, they might want to take a look at that thread and see if they can reproduce the issue (or confirm it isn't an issue).

  • Problem with importing RAW files from camera

LR 1.3 refuses to import raw files from my camera. Only JPEG's are imported. Got a Canon 350D/Rebel XT. Once I copied the raw files to disk (using Camera Window) Import from disk works fine and converts the CR2 to DNG without a problem. The preference "Treat JPEG files next to..." makes no difference. Anybody a clue what's wrong?
    Thanks, Edwin

Yeah this is a known bug with Canon cameras in general (not just using Lightroom!). If you use the camera to download your images anyway, I believe the trick is to set the camera to mass storage mode and you'll also get the RAWs. Lightroom's import from camera is very buggy though, hence it is a better idea to use a reader, or to manually copy the files to your harddisk first and import from there.

  • I am trying to import CR2 files from my canon 450D.  Lightroom 5 won't let me. Help please!!

I am trying to import CR2 files from my canon 450D into Lightroom 5.  Lightroom says 'preview unavailable for this file'.  I cannot get past this.  I have tried importing directly from the camera, and also from an external hard drive that I managed to download the photos onto.  I am new to Lightroom so any simple suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!  Also I am working on a Mac.  Thanks!

I have a 450D and the files open just fine in LR5.
Is this your first attempt at using LR or your first attempt at developing CR2 files?
It sounds like your raw files may be corrupted or there is some permission problem that is preventing LR from reading the files.
Can you upload one of these unrecognized files to http://www.dropbox.com/ and post a public download link to it, for others to test?
Also try copying just one CR2 file to your internal drive and see if that imports, in case there is some problem with the permissions on the external drive.  Just use Finder to copy the file, not LR, in case that is an issue.

Hi there, I need to be able to read raw files from an Olympus Stylus 1 via CS5 and Lightroom 4.  I have downloaded Raw file plug-in v 6.7.1 but still can't read the files?

    Read this table http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
The Olympus Stylus 1 was first supported in Camera Raw 8.3 which is only compatible with CS6 and CC.
It is not compatible with CS5 or older and never will be.
If you do not want to upgrade to CS6 or CC then you can dwonload the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all Stylus 1 Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5.

I am an amateur photographer. I just purchased a brand new NIKON D3300 took a few pictures, signed up for the Adobe annual Photographers Creative Cloud annual program and my first task to have Lightroom import a few test photos fails and I have no clue why my raw + jpgs can't be imported. at the outset In Lightroom I also got a "Preview unavailable for this file" message for every image file when I pointed to the memory card I had connected to my computer:

    NIKON D3300
The Nikon D3300 Raw format is not yet supported in Lightroom 5 (currently 5.3).
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Raw file formats are proprietary to each camera manufacturer and specific to each camera model. Adobe's Camera Raw engine (used by both Adobe Camera Raw - as a plugin to Photoshop - and Lightroom) must be constantly updated with every new camera make and model which arrives on the market in order to read and edit Raw files from that camera.
Adobe has added support for the D3300 to Camera Raw 8.4 which is about to be released. It is a Release Candidate (RC status) at the moment. So D3300 Raw support will probably be added to the next soon-to-be-released Lightroom update (5.4).
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cameraraw8-4-cc/?tabID=details#tabTop
In the meantime, you can download the free Adobe DNG Converter 8.4
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/cameraraw8-4.html
Using the DNG converter, you can then convert the D3300 Raw files to DNGs then open and edit the DNGs in Lightroom 5.3.
Once Lightroom 5.4 is released (assuming it also has D3300 support) the DNG conversion will no longer be required.
