Will you help a clueless PC user trying to figure out which Macbook to buy?
Hi everyone! I am a PC user and am pretty clueless about Macs. I'm trying to buy a laptop for my boyfriend (a Mac user) as a gift and would be happy with any feedback you can give me. I think I'm trying to decide between the 13" Macbook Pro or the Macbook Air. He is a writer so pretty much his only requirement is to be ablet to run a writing program. He's also a director so at times he travels frequently. Thank for your help!
As others have posted, the MB Pro is much more powerful and feature rich than the Air. The only thing the Air has going for it is its thinness and weight. The other dimensions are pretty much identical to the 13.3" MB Pro. I think the MB Pro is also a much better value.
Now... having said that... does your boyfriend currently have a Mac notebook? I know you said he is a Mac user... but he may just have a desktop. If he does have a current Mac notebook... do you know what it is (and the size)?
Notebook choices can be very personal decisions and what you think he may prefer may not be what he would prefer. If you're going to spend the money on something like a new MacBook, you really want to be sure to get him the machine he wants vs. taking our suggestions. While the MB Pro is a much better machine all around, he may actually prefer the Air for his own reasons. After all, the MacBooks and MacBook Pros have been better machines and values than the Air since the Air was released... but they still sell them because there is still a market segment that wants them.
Maybe you could just treat him to a trip to a surprise trip to an Apple store where he can pick out what he wants. That way it's still a surprise, but you can be sure that he'll end up with what he wants.

Hey Guys ! I need help on figuring out which MacBook Air to buy . Please Help Me !
I Need Help Figuring Out Which MacBook Air To Buy.
Avoid the MacBook Pro (non retina) unless you absolutely need to burn or read DVD/CD media on the road and don't want to carry around a small external optical drive. That leaves the MBA and the MBPr as your two choices. The Air's advantage is extreme portability and battery life - especially with the standard CPU. The MBPr's main advantage is its display. Both are perfectly good workhorse computers for school and work. Neither is especially good for gaming other than casual games. In fact many games don't support the Intel integrated video at all.
Once you've decided on which model I strongly recommend that you have at least 8GB of RAM. How large a drive depends on how much you intend to stuff onto your computer. Using my MBA for home and work, which includes a minimal installation of Windows 7 for programming and verifying that websites look and behave acceptably on both platforms, I can fit everything I need on a 256GB drive but could never live on a 128GB drive. My wife, however, could have saved a little cash and gone with the 128GB model. -
Trying to figure out which older GPIB I have
I have an old GBIB I want to put in a new Dell computer, Win2000. I know I need to download new drivers, but can't figure out which ones. The GPIB is marked 429C(handwritten) 488EX. A small sticker is marked NEC REV Q 0295. Thanks.
Hello,
Sometime's it's the simplest answer.
We were told our computer had a NI GPIB. After your response, I checked again and found CEC on the board. A quick internet search and I found the manufacturer.
Thank you for your quick response. I really appreciate it! -
First time Mac User trying to figure out .dmg files?
Hello all,
I'm a little bit confused with how the macs install software. I do notice that .dmg files are equivalent to window's .exe files. I just don't understand why files that I thought I installed, (Take rar expander or VLC for example) don't stay installed? I do have the .dmg files for both programs, however, I have to keep reinstalling it using the .dmg files every time I shutdown/restart my computer (I do this by using the finder, and type in the name like VLC and only the .dmg file shows up, nothing else). Is this common? I thought once you install a .dmg program, the shortcuts and all should stay on your computer? I apologize for being mac illiterate, but I'm still figuring out stuff. Any input or help would be greatly appreciated!

No they are very different. An .exe is a Windows executable. A Mac .app is close to an .exe.
A .dmg is an image file. It is a container. When you click it, it opens and there are files inside. It is more like a disk image in Windows.

When you find a file inside a dmg, you can run it from there but it is not installed. To install it you drag the image/inon of the app into your applications folder (or any other folder or your choice) and then when you run it, it will install itself (it might ask for a password to install it) and from then on you just run it normally.

Help trying to figure out which devise to use
have used tungsten for years. want a phone and pda combo for business app. the ones i tried in the sprint store will not open my quickbooks online web pages. is there somthing that needs to be added? i am not a teckie but would like the freedom of doing business in the field.

The QuickBooks online site says:
You get anytime, anywhere access from any Internet-connected PC or Mac.1 And, you can even view your company data from an iPhone™ or Blackberry®.2
1 Requires Internet Explorer 6 or higher, Firefox for Windows or Safari for Mac.
2 Standard cell phone fees apply.
It sounds as though Intuit has created mobile apps for the iPhone and Blackberry OS, but nothing specific for PalmOS, Windows Mobile, or Palm's webOS. As far as browser access, which devices did you try? Did the site just fail to work correctly, or does it say the mobile browser was not supported?
You could try the QuickBooks Online support options for advice on devices other than the iPhone and Blackberry if you prefer. If you find a Palm-friendly solution, please post back for future reference. -
Trying to figure out why MacBook Pro 1,1 shuts down randomly
Hi-
I have a MacBook Pro that shuts down frequently, almost during every use. This has been happening over the last 2-3 months. It will be working fine, then the pointer freezes, then the screen will flicker, then it will shut off. The problem happens with the battery, plugged in and even plugged in without the battery. It has also happened while running off the WIndows XP Bootcamp partition.
I've looked around for some solutions but haven't fixed the problem yet. Last weekend I erased the hard drive (keeping the Windows partition) and reinstalled OS X 10.6.8 but the problem started again. My best guess is that it is a thermal issue beacuse the problems to seem to occur around 80C. So I've installed SMC Fan Control to try to keep the temperature low, but I haven't had it running for long with the new OS X install. I figured I'd check here to see if there could be any other issues.
If anyone has any insight, I'd graetly appreciate it. Thank you!

Trying to Figure Out Options - MacBook Air AND iPad?
I've been thinking about this every since Jobs announced the new MBA's, but thought I'd turn to more experience brains here for some help. I'm trying to sell my Late 2008 MBP 15.4" on Craigslist in order to get a new 13.3" MBA with 2.13GHz process and 4GB RAM. The confounding thing is that I also have a 64GB iPad (WiFi only).
Here's my dilemma: should I just sell my MBP and get the MBA? Side note, I've gotten ZERO response to my Craigslist ads If I do buy the 13.3" MBA should I also try to sell my iPad? For some reason, I feel like having a MBA and an iPad is too duplicative and unnecessary.
Any thoughts and opinions would be very helpful. Thanks!http://www.mac2sell.net/
I sold my nearly 3 year old MB on craigslist in the Seattle area for about what the website above said it was worth. I had a buy almost immediately.
I've also sold several laptops on eBay and mostly got about what I was looking for. On Craigslist, there are a lot of Nigerian scammers trolling. So my craigslist listing clearly states for a reply from me, they have to include their local telephone number. I find this generally weeds out the Nigerian scammers.
Never had a problem on eBay with Nigerians. Of the two services, I prefer craigslist because I seem to get a better price for my computer equipment. I do include a "money back" limited time period (usually a week) and I've never had anyone ask for their money back. However, I think it reinsures them in case the computer might have a problem. IF I have any defects, I list them upfront.
Another negative with eBay is the raising fees they charge. To equal a craigslist sale, I guessing you have to get $25-$35 more just to break even. -
Trying to figure out which software this is
I have the X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card and has been working fine for the last year.
Recently, I wanted to use my current rig also as an HTPC.
Found that my XtremeMusic can do this just fine, using the FlexiJack. I've bought the Digital I/O accessory that allows me to hook up Coaxial or Optical in or out. Hooking optical to my AV reciever, didn't seem to work.
According to knowledge base, by enabling the Dolby Digital/DTS Bitstream Out option in Audio Console, or the On (External Decoder) option in Entertainment Mode or Audio Creation Mode.
Didn't seem to work...
Than I found more info on the knowledge base, using a Creative software where you can do more detailed setu
ps.
.. but, I can't seem to locate what this is.
Here is links to pics:

Can anybody help me in determining what software this is?
Thanks! In the main installation menu there are two options, 'X-Fi' and 'MediaSource', select X-Fi and click on next. If you have installed part of the software suite it will give you the choice to add remove or repair, else choose custom installation. In the next screen or two you will be given the option to install the mode consoles.
Another option is to copy the entire installation CD to a hard dri've folder, copy 'engine32.cab' from ATH>\Audio\Setup to the individial app installation folder and run setup.exe from the app folder. The installation folders should be ACreMode EntMode and GameMode, I think you should also install ModeSw. -

So I've started my quest for the correct information and software required to completely erase and then re-install the OS on my G4 Power PC (Quicksilver 2002) roughly 2 days ago only to be stuck and very frustrated! So I could more than likely figure this out on own BUT the OS currently installed is so screwed up I cant even safe mode start it.. so I cant get the information I need from the "about this Mac" details if it were running. Is there another way to figure the correct OS X and build I'll need to reformat. I just want to return it to it's factory state and then give it to my kid. Anyone's help on this matter will be so very appreciated. Thanks
Be sure to look only for original or retail versions:
Original OS
Mac OS 9.2.2 (Mac OS ROM 9.0.1) and Mac OS X 10.1.2 (5P63)
Later OS
Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X 10.1.3, 10.1.5, or 10.2
Maximum OS
Mac OS X 10.4.11 (733, 800 MHz) Mac OS X 10.5.8 (933 MHz+) -
Trying to figure out appropriate SPECIAL!
Hi All,
Greetings! We are currently on EBS 11.5.10 and about to implement UPK.
We are in the first step, trying to figure out which SPECIAL (1 .. 15) to use in CUSTOM.pll.
"In-Application Support Guide.pdf" advises us to execute below commands to figure out the SPECIAL thats NOT being used.
1 --> cd $AU_TOP/forms/US; grep -i APP_SPECIAL.ENABLE `find . -name "*.fmb" -print`| grep SPECIAL7| grep -i PROPERTY_ON
2 --> cd $AU_TOP/resource; grep -i APP_SPECIAL.ENABLE `find . -name "*.fmb" -print`| grep SPECIAL7| grep -i PROPERTY_ON
We changed *.fmb to *.pll in the second command. Modified comamnd is:
3 --> cd $AU_TOP/resource; grep -i APP_SPECIAL.ENABLE `find . -name "*.pll" -print`| grep SPECIAL7| grep -i PROPERTY_ON
After executing commands 1 and 3 (for SPECIALs 1 thru 15), we figured out all SPECIALs (from 1 thru 45) are being used.
Please advise,
1. if we are wrong in our above approach.
2. if we can use MENU instead of SPECIAL in 11.5.10; if so, can we use above commands (1 and 3) with SPECIAL replaced with MENU to figure appropriate MENU to use
All your help in this matter is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!!
Regards,
VivekI had a similar problem when working on a long Pages doc (40,000 words). The glitch only occurred on this one Pages file and affected no other applications. I fixed it by duplicating the file, trashing the original and working on the new document. I have no idea of the cause of the problem.
