Win 2008 DHCP Reservation names changes

It appears that DHCP Reservation names are automatically being changed to match the host name of the device. Any way to make that stop short of blocking the probes with a firewall rule?

Ok.  I understand about Bad_Address and the things that can cause it.  That said, I am using Window 2003 and we are running DHCP.  Yesterday we had a series of short power outages.  Some were right after the other (1 or 2 seconds) others
were 10 to 40 seconds in between.  The server (of course) has a UPS and so does most of our infrastructure (switches etc).
But it seems that one type of Printer that we have, were all switched to bad_address and they could not pick up their reserved IP address.  Some of them seemed to remember their IP and are still functional, even though their reservation says bad_address.
I assume they will fail either at lease renewal or the next time they are power cycled.  What surprised me was that these bad_address entries' reservations were changed to have an invalid MAC address.
All of them start with a 0 or a 1 and are only 8 characters long.  0401150a, 1701150a, 1901150a, hmmm.   i see a pattern forming.  They all have unique first 3 characters, but everything after that is 1150a.  That led me to figuring
out what this number is.  It's an inverted hexadecimal representation of the ip address that is being complained about.  Why would the DHCP server replace the MAC with this convoluted string?   Is this covered in any manual?
I am pretty sure it's not in the DHCP RFC.
Not sure why it was having the problem, unless somehow the printers were powering and made the DHCP request then discovered that the old lease information was kept somehow (remember, some of the outages were very brief) after the request had gone out.
But that, and nothing else I can think of makes sense.  And it only happens on one model of our printer.  At least so far.  And this isn't the first time we've seen it happen this way.
    Any ideas appreciated.
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
Firstly, it seems that the Unique ID of the DHCP Reservations are inverted to the IP addresses in hex. And, the most possible cause is IP conflict.
    For example:
    0401150a -> 04 01 15 0a (hex) -> 4 1 15 10 (decimal) -> 10.15.1.4 (IP address)
Meanwhile, I agree with the possible cause as you said, however, would you please kindly let us know the following:
    1. How many DHCP Servers do you have? Or, is the DHCP Server multihomed?
    2. Do the printers have multiple NICs?
    3. Are the printers both statically configured and have DHCP Reservations in the DHCP Server?
    4. DO other DHCP clients in the same scope have the same issue?
    5. Is there any trace in DHCP log?
In addition, if Conflict detection is enabled in your DHCP Server, please disable it and see how it works.
Also, please check if you can get some clues from this TechNet Thread:
    DHCP server bad address issue
In addition, as the issue only occur with the same model of printers, it is worth to contact the vendor for their insight on it.
    Hope this helps.

  • DHCP reservation & DNS for content filtering

    Hi All,
I am working around with server 2008 for quite a while and facing a problem as below,
    1.DHCP reservation error
Server Ip:192.168.0.254 (configured as DNS server for local use only with AD & DHCP)
    DHCP scope: 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.200 excluded 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.110
earlier the same scope was 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.100. I was facing a error when I make a IP reservation against a MAC number error was " The unique identifier may not be correct do you want to use the identifier anyway" when I click yes "DHCP
server received a message from a client that is not valid" and by this error I am not able to make any reservations now against MAC numbers.
The same error was also on the earlier scope and that's why changed to a new scope but did not work. Any solutions will me much appreciated
    2.DNS fine tuning.
I have an open DNS account on which my WAN IP number is configured to do a content filtering. I have two LAN ports with the below IP number
Local : 192.168.0.254 ( configured with no gateway and DNS as loopback (127.0.0.1)
ISP: 192.168.0.253 (with ISP gateway and DNS as loop back adapter & open DNS)
I have did a content filtering and things are working fine. But I got to open up some machines out of this content filtering and when I try to give the IP number in this below fashion.
    192.168.0.115
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.0.1
    DNS
    192.168.0.254
    ISP DNS to avoid filtering
I find that 192.168.0.254 does the resolving and things are still filtered as per the schedule. Is there a way where we can configure 192.168.0.254 (Local DNS server) to stop resolving web requests and only cater to resolving local names for connectivity.
I do know its too long but solutions for the same will be help me out to solve it. Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I have found something strange on the DHCP reservation. When I try to add a MAC number out of the network its able to make out a reservation.
Is there any way to clear the MAC number cache or something else which I can try.

  • Problem with installing R12  with Win 2008 (Rapidwiz 12.1.1.9)

I could really use someones help.
I did a download recently of Oracle Financials R12 for windows (I'm using WIN 2008 server) which contained version 12.1.1.9 Rapidwiz. I was unable to get it to work as individual DVD's which is fine, I build the staging area and had better results.
The first error I encountered was the release contained JRE 1.6 but the install referenced 1.5. I took a suggestion that I saw to copy the directory and rename it which worked just fine.
The next error I encountered came during the database install. There was some problem with the database service. It sounds similar to a problem discussed about just the database not related to Oracle Financials but the "fix" to just start the database doesn't seem to apply.
Below is the Rapidwiz log. The warning first mentioned is to check to be sure that the Administrator user being used in the install belongs to the administrator user group which of course it does.
I've brought to the top of the log, the error that I think is occurring. Please help me install, I'm trying to evaluate the software but having trouble with just the install is concerning.

  • Computer name changes incrementally (1, 2, 3...)

    Dear Apple Friends,
I have an issue that is affecting all the Macs on my home network: 3 MacBooks (wireless) and an iMac (hardwired) connected to an Apple Airport Extreme dual-band 802.11n/a/b/g 5Ghz/2Ghz wireless router. All the Macs are running Yosemite 10.10, I am running firmware v7.6.4 on the Airport (latest version). We have turned on Back to my Mac, File Sharing, and Screen Sharing (all are used pretty regularly) in the Sharing screen.
So here is what is happening...
All the Macs on our network are having their computer names changed with the suffix of (1), (2), all the way to 6 now.
I have tried resetting our Airport router (turn off/on again) and that seems to stop it for a day but then it starts again.
A few days ago, I did a factory reset on the Airport router per the instructions on the Apple website (hold down reset until it blinks constantly) to clear the router. Sure enough, the names started changing again after about a day.
Sometimes, I will change the name back, and it will rename itself again automatically right after I change it. i.e. John's MacBook Pro => John's MacBook Pro (1)
I have gone so far as to reboot every Mac on the network, shutting off the router, then turning it on again, and the issue returns. I am going to try and set up a DHCP reservation next and see if that helps.
Has anyone else run across this? If so, is this a bug or is there something I'm missing here? Thanks you for your time.

    To "fix" I:
First, I turned off networking which was WiFi in my circumstance.
Next, I named my computer back to the original desired name in the "Sharing" system preference without the (n).
    Then I added a "--no-namechange" parameter in the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist.
    Unloaded and loaded the deamon:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist
Last, I reconnected to the network.
Now when I connect to the network instead of getting something like below in the Console.app:
"discoveryd: Basic Bonjour Changing computer name from <hostname> to <hostname> (2)"
    This appears in the Console.app:
"discoveryd: Basic Bonjour Would have changed computer name from <hostname> to <hostname> (2), but it's disabled"
I could not find a Yosemite bug filed https://bugreport.apple.com/, but this site helped me hack my solution:

  • Server 2008 DHCP is handing out the wrong DNS server.

We have two new 2008 DC that handles, DNS, DHCP and WINS. Our DHCP scopes have been migrated to these servers. We are seeing some random issues where clients are using the new dhcp server but the old dns server information is listed for the some systems. We discover this by using network monitor on the old DC, DNS, DHCP server.  Once the client performs a ipconfig /renew, the problem is corrected. Any ideas?

    Hi BrianAuH20,
    Thank you for posting here.
Based on your description, I understand that your Windows 2008 DHCP server hands out the wrong DNS server address.
To troubleshoot this issue, please perform the follow steps to see whether the clients retrieve the right DNS server address.
    1.     Temporarily make the old DC, DNS, DHCP server offline.
    2.     Check the new 2008 DHCP server setting.
                          i.        In the DHCP console tree, under Scope [172.16.0.0] SS Scope, right-click Scope Options, and then click Configure Options.
ii.        On the Advanced tab, verify that Default User Class is selected next to User class.
iii.        Select the 006 DNS Servers check box, in IP Address, under Data entry, type DNS Server IP address, and then click Add.
iv.        Select the 015 DNS Domain Name check box, in String value, under Data entry, type your domain's FQDN name, and then click OK.
    3.     Restart the DHCP service.
For more information, you may refer to:

  • BO XI 3.1 Installation in Win 2008 R2. CMC & Infoview not opening

I did a BO XI 3.1 SP3 Installation on Win 2008 R2 machine. The Installation was successful. I could connect to the CMS from Client Components (Rich Client, UD, etc.,).
But CMC & Infoview are not opening... I mean the page shows blank without promoting for BO Login Credentials. I'm thinking the problem could be around Tomcat Configuration / something...  The system doesnot have IIS. Tomcat version is 5.5.

  • Unable to scan and install windows updates on Win 2008 R2 server

I've encountered some of my win 2008 servers are unable to scan and receive windows updates from SCCM 2012. Browse through the logs and found some error code related to
0x80244023. Excerpt from the WindowsUpdate and WUAHandler is as below. Searched the net and found some workaround which is to rename the registry key
WinHTTPSettings to WinHTTPSettingsx (by adding x at the end of the string)
    under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Internet Settings -> Connections.
I've did just that on the effected servers and after running again the Software Update Scan Cycle action, it is now able to scan and install the updates. My questions is, based on you guys experience, is there any repercussion (apart from enable to install
software updates) that I could encounter in changing the registry key value WinHTTPSettings?

    Hi
If SCCM is setup correctly and your boundaries are correct then once you deploy updates the agents will pick them up.
Also make sure you SUP role has the FQDN set. Lastly if you are using port 8530 make sure it is open.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • Crytal Viewer for Win 2008 64-bit OS

    Hello Folks,
I am not sure if it is the right forum to ask my question as there are zillions of orums and I can't find where to look for Crystal Viewer Help.
My Question is that I am wondering if there is a viewer available for 64-bit OS as we been using npviewer.exe for the past 6-7 years without any problem and now I have new Terminal Server which has 64-bit Win 2008 R2 and npviewer does not work.
I also have a Viewer for 2008 but I think that is 32-bit too while I do see many many discussions about 64-bit but can't find any clue about what is the outcome. Do we have and don't.
    Please help

    Thanks for your quick reply.
yes, I can use 32 bit and I have tried both ( new and old viewer) but my application does not work and I am not able to run my report in IE which is 64 bit while the this viewer is 32 bit and I also can not change my IE 64 to IE 32 to run ( at runtime) as this report gets generated in my ERP using Anyview and then gets fired up IE suing Crystal ActiveX Viewer..

  • Why the computer network name change?

Every now and this this happens: I unhook my MBPro from my office connection (ethernet) and take it into the living room and plug in there (ethernet). Wireless is off. Usually fine, but other times I get the message that a computer with this same name is already in use, so adds a number to my computer name (for local access). So I assume that Time Capsule thinks my computer still in the office as well.
Why does this happen? Is there something I should do before moving the computer to prevent this?
    Thanks,
    — Richard

Try giving your Mac a DHCP Client ID
    System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP -> DHCP Client ID
This should tell your router that you are the same Mac and not assign you a new IP address when you move.
Also after you give your Mac a DHCP Client ID, you can configure your Time Capsule to give your Mac the same IP address when ever it connects
Applicaitons -> Utilities -> Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule -> Edit -> Network -> DHCP Reservations -> [+] -> Reserve Address by: DHCP Client ID, then enter the DHCP Client ID you gave your Mac.  Click [Update]

  • ORA-01017 with Managed Provider 4.112.3.60.  Bug with ODP on Win 2008 R2?

I'm experiencing some trouble with the manage provider and I can't seem to figure out what's causing the issue.
At first, the Managed Provider seemed to be a drop in replacement for the Unmanaged Provider.  However, when we moved some code to our testing environments, the application started failing with a 'Logon Denied' error.
Our dev machines are 64 bit Win 7 and our test machines are Win 2008 R2.  The DEV machines do not have any trouble connecting to the database with the identical connection string used in the test environment.  I can connect to the database using sql plus with the connection string used in the application.
I'm at a loss on how to trouble shoot this.
    Thanks.
    Jon

App does not run in share drive, runs on operating system D:drive (However, I do access the Win 2008 via Citrix Desktop)
Removed the canned tags created by Visual Studio from app.config which removed the app.config error noted earlier,
recompiled, and ran app from test directory with this app.config and then app failed with this trace file
    As reminder:
No installation of Managed Driver, so machine config should be clear of managed driver settings.
Used XCOPY version of .60 beta, keeping the tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora copied from server Oracle Client > network > admin folder
along with the three managed driver files in the test application folder.
    Not using transactional services.
App is just simple test of managed driver calling list of tables with SELECT table_name FROM all_tab_cols and placing in List
App environment is WPF .NET Classic 4.0
    OS is 64-bit Windows 2008R2
Is the SQLNET NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN : (WORLD) supported?
From trace file, looks like YES as I submit the SID MYDB to the connection string builder and Managed Driver adds (as it should) the domain name .WORLD
Also as reminder, this app works just fine with UNMANAGED driver compile in same environment.

I am working on SQL Server 2012 and I am restoring diff db's backup with different db names. But, all the time I need to change their db files names manually its not being changed. In sql server 2008 r2 files name auto changed as per db name. Please
    guide me for auto change.

SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for SQL Server 2012 doesn't do that, as you have noticed. Nothing we can do about that, if we insist of using SSMS 2012.
SSMS 2014, however, does change filenames for us, in an even more intelligent manner than did SSMS 2008!

  • VML not working on Win 2008 32 bit enterprise, 10.2.0.3 database

    Oracle version 10.2.0.3
I currently have a win 2003 enterprise server (32bit) Intel Xeon with 16GB ram and have /3GB and /PAE in the boot.ini to enable VLM and it's all working fine using all the extra memory for db block buffers.
I now have a Win 2008 enterprise server (32bit) Intel Xeon and have set the corresponding switches as per microsofts docs, bcdedit /Set PAE ForceEnable - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366796%28VS.85%29.aspx and bcdedit /Set IncreaseUserVa 3072 - http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2009/04/03/who-moved-my-3gb.aspx but I just get :
    ORA-27102: out of memory
    OSD-00034: additional error information
O/S-Error: (OS 8) Not enough storage is available to process this command
I've set the registry key HKLM -> Software -> Oralce -> KEY_OraDb10g_home1 -> AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY exactly the same as the 2003 box at 500000000
I've rebooted the box again just to make sure but it still doesn't work.
Looking at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/win.102/b14304/architec.htm#i1005826 it does not mention win 2008 at all so is there something different for Oracle to be able to access the extra memory?
    thanks
    Robert

Ok, I seem to have got around the first issue using this http://bit.ly/mpWcuy
The new box has 16 cores on the cpu whereas the old box only had 4 so I had to up AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY registry entry to 1.2GB (as the calculated 1.07GB wasn't quite enough and the suggestion was to just up it to 1.2GB!)
However, I am now getting a different issue when trying to open the database!

    SQL> alter database open;
    alter database open
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kcbvmap_1], [], [], [], [], [], [],
Also, though at this stage it doesn't matter as I can't open the database, I can't push DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS past 2600000 even though the server has 72GB RAM. 2600000 uses just 22GB of ram (including the os and everything else on the box)

  • E4200 : DHCP Reservation not showing anything !?!

    Hello,
When I'm in Setup -> Basic Setup -> click on DHCP Reservation, I don't see all entries I've created earlier but computers that connect still have the correct IP address on the network; I don't know if I can create additional entries if nothing appears, what should I do ?
When I go to Status -> Local Network -> DHCP Client Table the list is blank but some computers are connected to the network
    I'm using firmware 1.0.01 build 10  Feb 21, 2011, language = English, Firefox 4.0.1
Rebooting the router doesn't change anything, I can't see connected LAN equipment and DHCP Reservation is empty despite the fact I've created entries.
Together with the "Access Restriction" which doesn't allow to block a computer from 10pm => 8am unless you create 2 rules + various issues with attached USB + 2.4Ghz signal that is far from optimal (never able to achieve more than 144-N-Mbps) and I ask myself if I will not contact the store where I purchased this unit and ask a refund (and buy something else from another brand...)
It's the first time I buy a Linksys equipment and very disappointed, support doesn't seem to be very serious
    Thanks for any suggestion
PS: Where do I ask for a refund or something similar in Linksys site ? If nothing exists, I'll let the store where I purchased this unit now about the present post

    Thanks for your answers
Today it works and I didn't reboot, restart or reset anything
I can see DHCP Reservation list + DHCP Clients Table
Same PC, same network, nothing restarted, reset, changed or added and now it works
    Weird
I would not like to re-create everything in the DHCP Reservation List as I have 17 entries so far (and going to add 1 more...)
Apparently, if I can't see my list, I have to wait a few days
