Win 2008R2 CALs allocation

Hi,
Got a question regarding CALs allocation.
My work place has got 3 departments and looking to setup Remote Desktop Services.
I will setup 3 Session Hosts (TS) for each department.
There are 10 users in department A (group A), 20 users in department B (Group B), and 5 users in department C.
Department B only approved for 15 CALs's cost due to some users are part-time.
in calculation of concurrent users for all 3 departments, I am going to purchase 30 CALs not 35 CALs (per user license)
My question: is there any way that I can split the 30 CALs in to 3 groups so that 10 for A, 15 for B and 5 for C?
my thought is to setup 3 separate licensing server/role on separate VMs on domain and point each session host to one licensing server, will this work?
or there's other ways to limit Group B to 15 concurrent RD connections?
thanks
Gary

Hi Gary,
RDS licensing is not concurrent, it is either per unique human (Per User), or per unique PC, Mac, iPad, thin client, etc. (Per Device).  What this means is that for Per User licensing you need to purchase
a RDS CAL for each person that will connect to a RDSH server regardless of whether they are full or part time.

  • User Unable to RDP in Win 2008R2 Due to Multiple Group Membership But Can RDP in Win 2003 Server

We have built a new application server with Windows 2008R2 where set of users are local admin (application owners) and we have same kind of application server
in Windows 2003 SP2 with same users as local admin.
Now in Windows 2008R2 servers these local admins are unable
    to RDP and get ACCESS
DENIED whenever user tries to login but can login successfully in 2003 server.
Now, strange case is, I found these admin users group membership with more than 600 groups and they are able to login win 2008 server as well if I remove their
group membership to a minimum level say around 300.
This is so confusing for me as user can login in WIn 2003 server with highest group membership but not in WIn 2008.
We have applied Maxtoken registry also through GPO.
Any idea what are we missing here.

This has nothing to do with Directory Services so I will move to the General forum.
One thing to look at is to make sure that you have RDP enabled on these new 2012 servers.

    Hello all:<br /><br />   I inherited this code from a programmer who is no longer with the company:<br /><br />URI URIPath;<br />URIUTILS -> IDFileToURI(path, URIPath);<br />// Set the IImportResourceCmdData Interface's data:<br />InterfacePtr<IImportResourceCmdData> importFileCmdData(importAndLoadPlaceGunCmd, IID_IIMPORTRESOURCECMDDATA);<br /><br />importFileCmdData -> Set(db, URIPath, (K2::UIFlags)0, kTrue, kFalse);<br />ErrorCode status = CmdUtils::ProcessCommand(importAndLoadPlaceGunCmd);<br />const UIDList* imageList = importAndLoadPlaceGunCmd -> GetItemList();<br />if (!imageList || imageList -> Length() == 0)<br />   break;<br /><br />UIDRef imageFrame = imageList -> GetRef(0);<br />InterfacePtr<IHierarchy> imageFrameHierarchy(imageFrame, UseDefaultIID());<br /><br />UIDRef newImage(db, imageFrameHierarchy -> GetChildUID(0));<br /><br />imageFrameHierarchy -> Remove(imageFrameHierarchy -> GetChildUID(0));<br /><br />This code places an image on the page at preset coordinates (that part is not shown).  The code works.  The only problem I am having with this is the final statement.  It causes the following notification to appear when the document is closed (determined through a careful and tedious process of trial and error):<br /><br />b  Document has XX UIDs that are allocated but not used.<br /><br />The "XX" invariably corresponds to the number of images placed through this code.<br /><br />Can anyone help me figure out where the code is duplicating UIDs?<br /><br />TIA!<br /><br />John

My suspicion would be imageFrameHierarchy->Remove. I have no idea what that code is supposed to do (why import the image and then delete it again..., presumably something else happening that has been cut from the code sample), but I would use a command there instead.

  • How to migrate a Win 2008r2 guest from VMware ESXi 4.1 to Oracle VM 3.1.1

I see a LOT of threads all over with conflicting info. I need to move this machine in the next 24 hours. Any help will be appreciated. I'm doing the move for performance reasons, so I'll need the paravirtualized drivers. I don't know if I should be researching the P2V boot iso, the ovf-tool on the VMware side, install IDE drivers before the move, uninstall VMWare tools, etc. Is there good RECENT doc on this process?

First try: Using the p2v process with the 3.1.1iso image and no modifications to the VMware machine.
Template created OK, but wouldn't clone to a VM: OVMAPI_9039E Cannot place clone VM: System-sda.img, in Server Pool: Server pool. That server pool has no servers that can run the VM.

Are you using RD Easy print service for your environment?
Check whether there is proper printer driver is installed. Please check the GPO setting whether the below policy is not enabled.

  • How to specify RD USER cal for particular session host server on a licensing server.

    Hello,
I have 25 user cal license which I want to deploy to my 5 session host servers (5 user cal for each host)
I got 1 licensing server, where I have installed these licenses and pointed all other servers to it.
but I dont see any option to reserve 5 for each host. (4 win  2008R2, 1 win 2003 separate to each other no session host)
    Thanks

I would always have two licence servers for resilience.

  • Downloading RD user cal from Microsoft Volume site

    Hello,
I am running across Microsoft Volume site for past 30 mins, but cannot find anything like RD User CAL license.
only thing closet I can see is "WinRemote Desktop SrvsCAL 4.5 w/Application Virt for Term" , is that the same?
I have build a traditional Win 2008R2 terminal server (session host) and no remote app.
What exactly the RD user cal name should look like?
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi,
You need the authorization number and license number (in the case of Open license) or agreement number for other volume programs like Select, Enterprise, etc.  When using the Install Licenses wizard in RD Licensing Manager you will need to
    enter these number(s).
If you purchased 2012 RDS CALs and want to install them on a 2008 R2 RD Licensing server then you will need to downgrade them first by contacting the Clearinghouse.  Alternatively you may install the 2012 RDS CALs on a 2012 RD Licensing server
(if you have one) and point your 2008 R2 server to it.  The 2012 RD Licensing server will automatically handle the downgrading as needed.

  • Live Migration with Different CPU versions on the hosts, win 2012R2 Datacenter

    Hello
This question have been asked in different forums but when I read the the thread's I feel that I get mixed answers.
And most answers are dating from 2012 (Win 2008R2), I don't know if they are still correct in win 2012R2.
So now I ask the question myself and hope to get at clear answer :)
We are in the process of installing a new Hyper-V cluster using Win srv 2012 R2 Datacenter as OS.
I'm planning to re-use some of the "old" servers from our current Hyper-V 2008 R2 cluster, removing it from the cluster and do a clean installation of 2012R2 Datacenter.
But I will need to buy two new servers to manage this (with a new version of CPU, same brand (AMD))
Old server: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6172 (12 Cores)
    New server:
    AMD Opteron™ 6344 (12-core)
    Now my question:
Will Live Migration work between these servers in my new cluster without me doing any special settings in hyper-v or in the VM or what do I need to do to get this to work?
    /Anders

    Hi,
It is important that all the hardware supporting Windows Server 2012 Failover Clusters be certified to work with Windows Server 2012.
In a cluster where all the nodes of the cluster are exactly the same, hardware migration is fairly straightforward. There are no concerns about differences in hardware, and
especially no concerns about different capabilities of the CPUs.

  • PowerShell runs on Windows 8.1 PS v4.0, but fails on 2008R2 PS v2.0

I developed a PS script to run on my server to discover if certain files exist*. I developed the code on Win 8.1 64-bit which has PS version 4.0 installed. It works perfectly. I copied the files to my Win 2008R2 SP1 64-bit server with PS version 2.0 (script
is called from a .bat file which just loads the script and allows it run).
Both computers use Comcast as the ISP, but are in different locations. The code fails on the server with an Invalid HELO name from the mail server coming from the very last line of code below. This mail server does require SMTP_AUTH, but as noted above it
works just fine from the Win 8 machine.
I believe the code is all PS v2.0, but could be wrong about that.

  • API services for multiprocessing with Win 8.1

Which new API services are available for multiprocessing with Windows 8.1 ?
    1. Creating a process ?
why ? Win 7.1 allocated all available cores for multiprocessing automatically whereas Win 8.1 allocates less
    2. Creating a thread ?
why ? Win 7.1 allocated cores for thread wheras Win 8.1 lets too many cores to sit idle !

    Hi Noel,
You are right, seeing is believing.
However, even if I showed screen snap shots it would prove nothing because the software using Win 8.1 could be wrong / badly designed.
In this case the latest Linux version utilizes all CPU cores as does the Windows 7.1 professional whereas
Windows 8.1 performs the same processes and their threads using only part of CPU cores.
The number of processes created > the number of CPU cores.
The amount of threads started by a process >  the number of CPU cores.
Because each process activates threads instead of performing tasks sequentially, several processes/threads should run concurrently and OS should utilize CPU cores efficiently.
Monitoring tools used: trace proving interprocess communication and application activities,
Task manager, Logitech (Linux) performance monitor and with Linux its performace tools.
We'll plan to implement 3D visual trace to complete the current 2D textual and XML trace.
Seeing the Windows 8.1 program code for process creation and being able to compare that to the corresponding one of Windows 7.1 would show if there are any differences - or could it be the energy saving options ...

    Hi,
Which process occupies the most CPU time? If a process holds up system resources for an undetermined length of time, the system may hang.
Have you tried to reboot the VM?
Is there any error or warning raised in ESXi? Have you consult vmware technical support about this issue? It may be a hypervisor issue.

  • Excel 2010 "Open" dialog box slow over DFS share

    Hi everyone,
We're having some issues with clients using Windows XP and Office 2010. We have recently migrated from some Novell OES file server to a Win 2008R2 file server with DFS. When the users try to open any file from this new FS directly from Excel's "Open
file" dialog box, when they "surf" through folders in this new fs, it takes aprox. 45sec~1min to populate folders. It doesn't occur if users search files using Windows Explorer, it only occurs directly from Office apps. Neither occurs in PCs
    using Windows 7.
    Thanks in advance!
    Matias

    Hi,
The issue may be caused by the SMB. As far as I know, Windows Xp supports SMBv1 and the Windows server 2008 R2 supports SMBv2. Thus, I recommend we try to disable SMBv2 in Windows server 2008 R2 to test:
To enable or disable SMBv2 on the SMB server, configure the following registry key:
    Registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
    Registry entry:  SMB2
    REG_DWORD: 0 = Disabled
    REG_DWORD: 1 = Enabled
    Default: 1 = Enabled

Note: Backup the registry key before you modify.
