Win 7 32 bit in Mavericks?

I have been using Win 7 32 bit but I need to upgrade to Mavericks.  I have been reading that you should haave the 64 bit edition of Win 7 if you need to use boot camp however I have Win 7 32 bit.  Is there any way that you can use the 32 bit edition if you upgrade to Mavericks from Snow Leopard?

Since I have a Macbook Air and an iMac I have to wait to install the software. However, I spoke with Microsoft and they assured me that it will work & if it doesn't they will give it over to a senior engineer.  As long as I have the original disk and serial number, they have no problem with it.  BTW, just for your knowledge they have cleaned up their act and assist customers with reinstallation issues.  So if you ever have a problem they will help you. I had a senior engineer that worked with my son's old laptop with Vista and scheduled phone calls at my convenience to troubleshoot.  It's nice to know that Apple and Microsoft have made peace with each other......

Why use a Virtual Machine: Sometimes you need to run a windows only program.  A VM lets you do that without rebooting your machine.
How is it different from Mac Boot Camp: Boot camp allows you to run windows but you must reboot your machine. It is faster and smoother than a VM (and with fullscreen details below), but you have to reboot for each use.
Is it possible to have a VM and Boot Camp: Yes, and I do this because sometimes I want to use a VM quickly without shutting down, sometimes I want the advantages of Boot Camp

Download Virtual Box Virtual Machine Player:
    https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
    Install Win 7 OS:
    Open Virtual Box
Choose “New” (Note: Once you click new it will require you to complete the process of creation, no option for quit.  If you make a mistake or are not ready, just finish it and then remove it and delete all files)
Name: “Windows 7 Virtual” or as you choose
    Type: Microsoft Windows
    Version: Windows 7 64-bit
Memory: I suggest 1GB if you have 4GB available, 512 MB may run slowly.  2GB+ of 4GB may slowdown your MAC OS running while the VM is running.
“Create a Virtual Drive Now” option
File Size: 25 GB should be the minimum selected, I used 25GB because I expect to use the drive to store very little.
    HD type: VirtualBox Disk Image
    Storage: Dynamically Allocated
Locate your new VM and click Start (again you will not be able to quit once you start, if you make a mistake continue until the red quit icon appears then remove the VM)
It will ask you to select the files for the OS.  Select the ISO file, for example: /Users/Christoper/Downloads/X17-58997.iso.download/X17-58997.iso
Proceed to setup Win with your preferences
Type product key from your OS purchase or an existing one that you are moving from another machine
Note: Screen resolution may be very limited on the virtual machine.  I use resolution 800 X 600 so that all of the desktop is visible.
I suggest using a windows gadget to view the CPU and Memory usage > On desktop mac-right-click i.e. separate fingers and click both > Gadgets > CPU Meter
Enjoy having Windows on your Mac!

I have found a solution to the screen being smaller in the windows 7 virtual machine.  First right-click in the desktop region and select screen resolution.  It is probably set to 800 X 600 by default which is much less than the screensize you are using.  To determine your native screensize, go to your mac and finder > applications > utilities > hardware > graphics displays.  Mine is 1440 X 900 for macbook air.  Then go back into the virtual machine and sceen resolution settings.  Choose a screen resolution which is slightly less in all dimensions so that there is no clipping and you do not have to scroll when viewing.  For me this was 1152 X 864.  Then exit saving changes and with the VM in view press command - F (or at the menu bar View > Switch to full screen), which puts you in full screen mode.  Now you should have a screen with minimal gray empty space filling the majority of your screen

Burn this image file (.iso) to a USB drive or DVD-R:
    USB drive:
Get a blank USB drive with 8 GB+ capacity
Format this drive to Fat32 (Windows and Mac shared format), this will erase the drive!:
    Finder > Applications > Utitilies > Disk Utility > Partition > 1 > Fat32
Extract the image file to the drive exposing its files:
Finder > Applications > Utilites > Boot Camp Assistant
Click both "Create a Win 7 or later version install disk" and "Download the latest windows support software from Apple" and advance
Locate your image (iso) file, example: /Users/Christoper/Downloads/X17-58997.iso.download/X17-58997.iso
Destination disk is your USB flash drive that was formatted to fat32, if it does not appear it may be in the wrong format
Click continue, this process takes a long time (30 mins - 1.5 hour estimated), it may appear that it is freezing because progress bar stops at times, do not stop it, let it keep running.  If you are unsure it is still going, open finder > click the drive > get info, and look at the size of the files.  Then close finder wait a few seconds, get info again and see that file size is slightly larger.  The final file size was 4+ GB for me
    or DVD-R:
I have not used a DVD-R but this is how I expect it to work:
    Insert black DVD-R
Finder > Applications > Utitilies > Disk Utility > Burn
Locate your image (iso) file, example: /Users/Christoper/Downloads/X17-58997.iso.download/X17-58997.iso

It will ask you to select a size of your Harddrive space for Windows OS, this will eat up some of the free space on your Mac HD.  How much space is enough for a Windows OS?  Depends on how many programs you plan to install on it.  If you are just using for surfing web and running MS Office, probably 30-40 GB is enough, and this is what I did.  Remember this space will be used up from your existing HD and not usable when you are in Mac OS.  This process takes about 10 mins I think
    Install Win 7 OS:
With USB drive in port or DVD in drive, restart laptop.
It will bring up the Win 7 installer on boot up
Select the OS type that you have a registered key for
It will ask you to find a HD to use for Win 7 OS:
Select the HD you just created, if you try to continue it will complain that HD is wrong format (because MAC formatted it to a MAC compatible HD, we will fix this)
Select the HD, there is a button to the right for "advanced" I believe is the text of it.  It will allow you to reformat the drive, choose NTFS which it requires.  Then proceed
Proceed to setup Win with your preferences
Type product key from your OS purchase or an existing one that you are moving from another machine
    Select Default Boot Drive:
By default it selects Windows as your default OS to boot at power up, most people want Mac OSX to be the default, so this can be changed:
Finder > System Preferences > Startup Disk > select Mac

In 10.8, the file info window’s “Kind:” read “Application”/etc. for 64-bit items and “Application (32-bit)”/etc. for 32-bit items.
The “(32-bit)” part seems to have been lost in Mavericks. How do I determine if an item is 32 or 64-bit in Mavericks?

    1. Launch System Information into its 'report' mode. (A quick way to do this is by holding down the option key while clicking on the Apple menu item, which causes "About this Mac" to change to that.)
    2. From the list on the left, under "Software" click on "Applications." (If you don't see the Applications item, click on "Show more information" from the "File" menu.)
    3. Wait a minute or so for the report to finish.
    4. The last column in the report is "64-bit (Intel)." (You may need to scroll the window to the right to see it.) Click on that heading to sort the list alphabetically. Anything with a "no" is 32 bit.

  • Any special considerations using Win 7 in Mavericks with Parallels

Just wondering -- I'm going to, I think, move up to Win 7 home premium edition because XP is no longer supported; it's on my bootcamp partition and I use that for parallels.
Any problems or specail considerations when using parallels with Win 7?  I'm on Mavericks and I don't have any problems with XP.
I do seem to have one problem -- all the versions of win 7 out there are something called OEM system builds and I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I guess it's not the same as a version that you would buy at a store and could move from one machine to the other; can anyone shed more light on this and offer any advice?  I'm not sure that I want to go to Windows 8.  I use windows for work and that's it; otherwise I don't want to deal with it, but I have to for my job, and that's it.  I'd stick with XP if I could, but no such luck; cant' seem to use the remote desktop connection anymore.
In any event, I can't seem to find a 'regular' version of Win 7 home premium; all the one's I've come across are system build versions; but they are fairly cheap -- about $100 or so.  Should I just go with windows 8 and pay the extra money for the latest OS or is it not worth it, in your opinion?

So just one more question -- the graphics display for Win 7 is
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
My MB Pro has is a 13" mid 2010
    Chipset Model:          NVIDIA GeForce 320M
2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo (which will work).
The HD is more than large enough.
I assume this will work fine with Windows 7?  I don't know if the NVIDIA is equivalent or superior to the directx

  • Safari 7.0.1 doesn't run in 32 bit mode  under Mavericks

    iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)
Safari 7.0.1 -> get info, Open in 32-bit mode checked
    Launch Safari
In the activity monitor -> Disk ->Kind : still  read 64 bit
Testing 32 bit mode with another app:
Logic Pro- 9.1.8 -> get info, Open in 32-bit mode checked,
    Launch Logic Pro
In the activity monitor -> Disk ->Kind  read 32 bit
A bug or Safari can't run in 32 bit under Mavericks ?

So that means that even in 32 bit mode, it has to run some code in 64 bit and that's why it shows 64 bit in the activity monitor even if it is set to run in 32 ?

  • Win OS Type (bit)

    Hi!
Is there any way to get the win bit type from labview? (32/64)
I wanna use other exe in my app, but when my OS is 32bit, i have to use the proper 32bit exe.
In the installer, I will attach both exes (32and 64) and what exe is needed it is decided by runtime...
What is you opinion about this procedure? Can u suggest me a more elegant?
    Thanks!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The link provided seems to indicate that it will tell you what version of LabVIEW you are running, not necessarily what version of OS you are running.  I don't have anyway to check to see if it works or not since I don't have a 64-bit OS, but my concern is if you are running 32-bit LabVIEW on a 64-bit OS, it will still respond with 32-bit.
The attachment has several VIs.  You need to look at two:
    \WinAPI\OS\AIT - WinAPI - Get OS Info (Basic).vi
\WinAPI\Process\AIT - WinAPI - Check if Running as WOW 64.vi
AIT - WinAPI - Get OS Info (Basic).vi will tell you what architecture you are running on.  If you are 64-bit LV, then you will get x64.  Unfortunately, Windows will return x32 if you are a 32-bit application running on 64-bit OS.  So, you also have to use AIT - WinAPI - Check if Running as WOW 64.vi.  If it indicates you are running WOW64, then you are 32-bit running on a 64-bit OS.  But, if you are 64-bit LV, this will return a false.  So you have to look at both outputs to know which OS you are on.

  • Adobe CS6 Performance on Mavericks

Does anyone have anything to report on Adobe CS6 running slowly on Mavericks?
Saving a file in Photoshop takes far too long, compared to Mountain Lion.  I may just re-install Mountain Lion and leave it at that.
I didn't bother with Yosemite as I understand Adobe CS wasn't performing well.
    My machine is:
      Model Name:    Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:    Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:    2.8 GHz
      Number of Processors:    2
      Total Number of Cores:    8
L2 Cache (per Processor):    12 MB
      Memory:    6 GB
      Bus Speed:    1.6 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:    MP31.006C.B05
      SMC Version (system):    1.25f4
      Serial Number (system):    G88053DYXYK
      Hardware UUID:    D94B7920-3F26-552E-84D2-D0DF8A599A70
In fact everything seems to "lag" a bit with Mavericks.  Open the Applications and takes and extra second or two to load each of the individual application icons. I've never seen that before!
    Thanks.

  • Question about defining [bit] attribute for products in MXI file ( bug ? )

    Hi,
When I define the [bit] attribute for a product element in xmi file (set to 64) and create the package, Adobe extension manager CS6 denies to install it on a 64-bit system (by saying:) because it is a 64-bit extension!!
I tried it in two different environments (Vista and 8 - 64 / CS6) with same result!
Is it a bug (known?) or am I doing something wrong?!
    <product version="8" maxversion="8" primary="true" name="InDesign" platform="win" bit="64"/>
Any idea would be appreciated, thx, mim

The bit attribute means the Win32 or Win64 version of the product for which this extension can be installed. It has nothing to do with the Windows OS architecture. Since InDesign CS6 has noly 32 bit version, you don't have to specify bit as "64", even if you are using Windows 64 bit.
Starting from CC, InDesign has both 32 bit and 64 bit version on Windows. But they have different product name, "InDesign" and "InDesign64" respectively. So if you only want to create the extension for 64 bit InDesign CC, you can specify:
    <product version="9" name="InDesign64" />
The "primary" attribute is no longer used on CC. The product name of InDesign on Mac is still "InDesign", so "platofrm" and "bit" attributes are unnecessary to be specified in this case.

  • Parallels or a PC for Games?

    I have an iMac from 2011 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 / 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3:
I thought that instead of buying a new windows machine that it might be more prudent to get parallels with Win7 or something in order to play the game Wolfenstein from 2009, but I'm not sure if my graphics car will be good enough?
    http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=64&game=Wolfenstein
I would also like to play the one just released as well, but am not sure about the 32/64 bit thing. Can the Wolfenstein from 2009 run on Win in 64 bit mode, can I even have Windows in 32 bit on Mavericks, which is 64bit?
I am also unsure if my graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB) will work with the new wolfenstein?
Alternatively would it not just be less hassle to get an all-in-one MSI PC machine to play them?
    Thanks

    Hi Hamper,
You're right, before buying a PC let's try with your iMac: you can use actually Parallels with both Win7 32 bits and Win7 64 bits without problems (I use currently Parallels with OSX 64 bits and Win7 32 bits).
The only difference you will see with using 64bits is that your Win7 will not be limited with 4GB RAM use (the 32 bits version will). Note: think about configuring Parallels to put at least 8GB memory for Win7 to run.
So the best way for you is to get one license from Win7 (32/64 bits, you'll get 2 DVDs in the box), install these two OS on Parallels and see how Wolfenstein 2009 is running. Try the Win7 32 bits first, since this game is likely to be design for 32 bits OS, so it should run better on it. Wolfenstein 2009 will be able to run also on a 64 bits environment, but with lower perfs due to compatibility mode needed to run.
If your framerate is not good enough, you can try to dual boot your iMac with Win7 32 bits or 64 bits (using Bootcamp is nice and easy to implement - Note : for Win 7 32 bits dual boot use Bootcamp v4, for Win 7 64 bits use Bootcamp v5. It avoids the OS virtualization and consequently brings more performance.
Now for newest games it is quite difficult to say if your graphic card will work fine. 512MB is quite light for new games as they recommend at least 1GB Graphic Card. If you focus on Mac Games version, that should be fine, since they are normally optimized for it. For PC Games with heavy needs (FPS / RTS / and everything dealing with anti-aliasing, etc), well, your Graphic card won't enable you to play in "Ultra" settings.
One thing to have in mind, while playing heavy 3D games, keep an eye on the temperature of your components, since the thermal dissipation is the key: meaning that your workstation components will go to high temperature and if the air flow is not enough your performance will decrease to a suitable operating heat level. This is typically the case of laptops and all-in-one workstations, where the output air flow is not enough to evacuate the heat by playing new 3D games, so your framerate drops to the ground. You have pretty nice free widgets for OSX to monitor your components heat level.
And finally if your iMac Graphic Card is not powerful enough to play recent games my advice comes with 2 options:
    Option 1: do not play current 3D games;
Option 2: build a Minitower PC config with good fan system, for a cost of 600 to 700$.  You should focus on Graphic Card for a budget of around 150$ (Radeon or nVIDIA chips), it should run all new Games in Good Quality. Before buying a PC Graphic Card, search on internet its benchmarks on games: the memory capacity is sometimes not a good indicator i.e. nVIDIA GT (bad perf) vs GTX (good perf) versions
And by the way, nice iMac you have, enjoy!

    If the reset doesn't work:
    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTune and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTune has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTune.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...

  • Magic Mouse not working in Windows 8.1 via Boot Camp

    Hi,
I'm using Windows 8.1 on a Mac Pro 64 bit with Mavericks.
On an internal SSD I installed Boot Camp 5.1.5621 and Windows 8.1.
Everything is working fine, except for the Bluetooth mouse, which is not recognized.
If I try to add the Bluetooth mouse via Settings/Change PC settings/PC and devices/Add a device, the system can't see it.
The Bluetooth icon is not visible in Device Manager:
I remember that with Windows 8 for a while I had the same problem, till it was solved after installing a generic Bluetooth driver, but now I don't remember where I found it and which it was.
I have been looking for that piece of software for months, I've tried with many, but with no result.
I've been googling any kind of article, doing many trials, with no result, and I'm getting crazy.
The Apple support directs me toward Microsoft support, while Microsoft support directs me toward Apple support.
Maybe that with 8.1 there are no chances?
    Or there is a workaround?
    Can someone help?
    Many thanks in advance!

In the $WinPEDriver$ folder I can see the same files I see in yours: I'm enclosing a picture.
I'm enclosing also the picture of the About This Mac -> More Info -> System Report -> Bluetooth window, describing the hardware.
    Thanks!

  • Issue with iChat AV 4.0

Just upgraded to Leopard and tried to have a chat with my son in Miami. I got the same error message no matter which one of us tried to initiate the chat. It timed out on his side and I got a message saying that he had ended the chat (although he had not). We're both using Intel imacs. He's using Tiger. Any help would be appreciated
Here's the text of the message:

    Hi,
Certain functions like web browsing and mail tend not to be effected by networking issues.
However in this case it would seem that as you can get on line some of the basic stuff has been brought across.
Ok in Panther and Tiger to changed or check the IP you got from your router or modem you went here
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/iChatPicsFolder/7System_Prefs-Network/slides/iChat_Network-PreferencePane.html
If you now click the left arrow just above the pic you will see where that went next.
Two clicks to the right arrow leads on to the next bit (as the pics are out of order).
Now you get a pane that lists the connections you could use down the left.
The Drop down for Automatic or the location is at the top on the right.
Under that you have the choice of which Network you are connected to (for Airport)
Further down is the Advanced Button.
This opens up to display what was the tabs with some things moved from other parts of the OS.
You have to set the TCP/IP stuff in here (No problem if DHCP to the Airport)
You may have to re-enter the DNS Servers (Use the Add Button for each choice you have)
In the WINS bit you can add the SMB WORKGROUP name if using other computers on your LAN (This used to be in Directory Access in the Utilities folder).
The WINS server should not be important. (nor the Proxies if you did not use them before)
Check to see if this info is the same as it was before.
    The Firewall has also moved.
    It was in Sharing
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/iChatPicsFolder/6iChat%20Ports/slides/1_iChat_PortsFirewall-Sharing.html
    These pics are in order
Now it is in Security on the top row of the System Preferences and is simplified to naming apps if you Restrict it but you do have to list them like Exceptions on a Windows computer.
Most likely it is the DNS server info that you need.

  • Alt boot up is gone. MacPro 2012

    Hi !
I´m on a Mac Pro with 2 harddrives (each 1TB) and one PCIe SSD 240GB. I was running Snow Leopard on HD in rack 1 and had Boot Camp on the HD in rack 2 (Win7). I made a clean install of Mavericks on the PCIe drive.
Everything was going great untill I was trying to boot with "alt key" down. Then came the "white screen of death". Nothing happens. No pictures of bootable disks.
I can change the boot disk and go to Windows via diskutility. I can re-boot back to Snow Leopard from Win 7 (not Mavericks). And then I can change the boot disk once more and be back in Mavericks.
Why? What happened with the Alt-key boot up screen? Is this due to the fact that Apple does not support PCIe disks? Should I reinstall the drive in rack3? Or is there an incompatibility here?
    Anyone?
    Per D

    Hello Ice44,
I would be concerned too if I was unable to access the Startup Manager anymore.  I recommend resetting PRAM for the issue you described:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
You can find the full article here:
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Simias-server-setup error: Unable to set simias path

No matter what configurations I put in, when running through "simias-server-setup" I keep failing at this error:
System.Exception: Unable to set simias data path in /root/ifolder_server
    at Novell.iFolder.SimiasServerSetup.SetupScriptFiles () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0
    at Novell.iFolder.SimiasServerSetup.Configure () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

    at Novell.iFolder.SimiasServerSetup.Configure () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0
First off, shouldn't it be trying to set the simias data path, in the data path I gave in the setup? (/var/simias/data by default)
Additionally, why am I getting filename unknown at the crash report?
And obviously, has anyone else run into this? Any ideas as to what would cause this? I can't for the life of me figure this out.
I'm installing ifolder on a 32-bit Ubuntu Maverick, and followed the instructions from: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/iFolderInstall
I've gotten to the point where I can reach the web-interface, however (I did that a while ago, I don't remember if I actually got past this part before, but now I'm setting it up with ldap so I can sync user accounts).
Thanks for any help or input
