Win 7 32 or 64?

I have a MBP 13" 2.54 Ghz 4 GB. I can get a copy of Win 7 through work in either 32 or 64 for the same price discount. I will probably only use it for now to play a few PC games that ran on XP. I'm not sure if these games will even run on Win 7. I'm leaning on getting the 32 bit version. Any reason I should get the 64 bit version?

Windows 7 comes in two separate flavours, on two separate discs. Usually when you buy it you get two DVDs in the box, one is 32 bit and the other is 64 bit.
As far as I know, you cannot install the 64 bit 'as 32 bit' at all; you have to make a choice.
When I decided on a version, I reasoned that the whole point of my installing Windows at all so was to cater for the older Windows software. So I installed the 32 bit version, on which virtually everything will run, even though the 64 bit DVD was sitting there for me in the box. I do not regret that decision.

  • Install win 8.1 error looking for disk

I have a new Mac Mini w/ Mavericks OS.  I have been trying to install Win 8.1 for days.  I had a keyboard on order, finally came today to allow me to Recover the Mac from a failed Win 8.1 install.  I have read hundreds of conversations on this topic. And to air one question constantly asked, 'Why! Why is it that there are dozens of different ways people are having to use to install one program? Why?!?'
I am able to get to the page in Windows setup where I am to select the drive called BOOTCAMP.
    I select the drive
    I then FORMAT the drive
Then I am told that drive - or any installation for Windows drive - is NOT found or available.
I've gotten to this screen a dozen times now.
I have arrived there by two methods  1) following the 'book' on Win 8.1 installation via BOOTCAMP  and  2) Once here I shut the machine down and reboot with CTRL-key at restart -> select the WINDOWS drive from those available -> then follow the Windows install panels.  Which, every time leads me right back to this page.
A note about this page.  Every online tutorial, including the one on the Windows site and here on Apple forums, shows a DIFFERENT layout of the page. The tutorials show a page with a link to click for Advanced settings.  My window just shows those Advanced settings.  I don't see how this makes the process work or not, but that's a peculiarity of my setup woes compared to the instructions that exist.
NOW .. HOW in the name of all that is sensible!! -- do I get from the page where I select the partition I need to install Win 8.1 on..?
Again ..PLEASE!!! DO NOT retroute me through all the old settings everyone has been hashing about since September 2013.  I need to know What Works NOW - January 2014- to get Windows 8.1, installed and working on my Mac Mini running latest version of Mavericks.
    Thank you ... I HOPE!

Windows 8.1 is not yet officially supported in Bootcamp. There is no way to know when it will be supported.
Having said that some systems will install it and it runs fine, though these systems appear to be few and far between.
The only advice I can give is to try some of the workarounds available on various sites or wait until it is supported by Bootcamp.

  • Running Dual boot windows 8 and win 7 pro with xp mode installed!! I love it!!

It took over 2 days to figure out how to adjust the bios to get my win 7 pro DVD to boot and install dual boot on this GREAT MACHINE!!
Step 1: using diskmgmt.msc you have to shring the C partition. I shrunk it so I had 80GB remaining as unallocated space.
Step 2: You have to enter the machine Bios adn set the BIOS to Both and UEFI as first
Step 3: Connect your usb dvd
Step 4: Put your win 7 pro dvd in the usb dvd drive
Step 5: Reboot your machine and when it starts press F12 to get the boot menu and select the usb dvd drive then press enter
    The machine restarts
Message on screen says press a key to boot from cd/dvd
Press space and it boots up the win 7 pro DVD
After files copy and load the setup screen asks to accept the agreement and where to install win 7
BE SURE TO SELECT THE 80GB location
Then follow thru the win 7 prompts to load it.
When the machine restarts you will see a dual boot screen with Windows 7 on top as first selection and Windows 8 below it as 2nd selection.
Make sure to hit enter with windows 7 selected
    The win 7 installation completes.
You will see many items with drivers not installed dont fret.
You can load most of the drivers by highlighting the device in control panel/device manager and pick update driver then select BROWSE for DRIVER and be sure to put in drive D:\ which is now the windows 8 drive and hit search.
Many of the windows 8 drivers installed with no issue.
The Realtek driver was an exception .. goto to the lenovo site and pick the x100e tablet and download the LAN driver from there  about (4MB). Copy it to flash drive and install it in win 7 from the .exe file. The driver for LAN will install sucessfully. The version of the driver is 7.46 something the 7.11 versions do not workl.
I have only 3 drivers that I could not find - 2 list as unknown and are related to ACPI or power management and 1 lists as USB controller but all the USB stuff works without it.
Be sure to either shutdown the system or sign out of win 8 when your done so you get the dual boot menu. If you shutdown while logged into win 8 the next time you start up it will go right to win 8 until you signout and restart.
Just to let you know an easy way to shutdown is go to the desktop and press ALT + FN + F4 and a shutdown menu comes up on the desktop.
Once win 7 pro is installed you can download the XP mode free from Microsoft and install it.
This is of course AFTER you have ACTIVATED WINDOWS 7 ONLINE with YOUR ACTIVATION KEY(you supply).
ENJOY! This is the BEST machine I ever had!

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

  • Can a Mac and a Win share the same music library on an external?

I have a Powerbook, my wife a Toshiba laptop, both are authorized under my account. She's relatively new to iTunes and ipod so she has a small library on her Win machine. My Itunes library has grown so large I'm about to move it to an external drive. I'd like her to be able to access that library to load her ipod.
Is it a matter of formatting the external the correct way?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Interesting question!
I think the answer is FAT32, but I'd rather you tried NTFS first.

  • TS1363 I was upgrading iPhone OS from 5.1 to 5.1.1 on Win 7 using iTunes 10.6.1.7.  The iPhone hung.  It is no longer visible by iTunes on Win 7

While upgrading iPhone OS from 5.1 to 5.1.1 on Win 7 using iTunes 10.6.1.7, the iPhone hung.  I could not get iTunes to find it and Win 7 does not see it.
When I connect the iPhone to the USB, Win 7 issues the welcome sound, but that is it.  The same happens when I disconnect iPhone.
The Devise Manager has the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver correct without any problem.  I updated this driver called usbaapl64.
    The iPhone is still hung.
    I restarted the iPod service
I restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service
I tried to empty and delete the temp directory in C:\users\myname\AppData\Local\ but could not
The iTunes I am using is the latest version
I updated the Apple Mobile Device Driver as stated above correctly
The iPhone is still hung and is not recognized by Win 7 or iTunes, so I cannot restore the OS to the previous working version
What else can I do to restore the previous working OS on my iPhone 4

I was connecting the iPhone 4 to a USB 3.0 port.  I was told by Apple Express Support (at US$29.99) not to use USB 3.0 and to use USB 2.1 instead.
If you are connecting your iPhone to the computer using a USB 3.0 port, disconnect it immediately.  iPhones will lock up if you try to update while  using a connection through a USB 3.0 port.
Disconnect the iPhone from the computer
Go to Device Manager and find the connected USB port.  Click the mouse right button and update the driver
Shut the iPhone by pressing the sleep button and the home button concurrently for some time
Move the USB cable to a USB 2.1 port or older without the iPhone.
    Restart iTunes.
    Connect the iPhone
Your computer should recognize the phone and reloads the correct USB 2.1 driver (Apple Mobile Device)
Then iTunes should recognize the iPhone and starts reloading the firmware.
When that is complete it may ask if you wish to restore, naturally you say YES
    iTunes will restore the iOS
Using iTunes, restore the latest backup to get your data back.
When all of the above is completed.  Start enjoying your iPhone.
If the above does not work.  Throw your iPhone out of the window and get a replacement Android phone.

  • Windows Easy transfer , ERROR message when trying to copy settings to Win 8 PC

    I have a new hp-TouchSmart Envy 23. It has 2TB drive.
I want to use Windows Easy Transfer to move all my settings and data from the Windows 7 machine to the new hp-TouchSmart (my older PC is hp desktop is model # m9177c and has Win 7 OS)  .
I have used easy transfer many times and I am reasonably experienced user .
I just cannot transfer my settings and data to my new PC. I have therefore copies all my data to the hp-TouchSmart . However I need to use Windows easy transfer to move all my settings. I have a very large number of settings , macros and much else that would take a very large amount of time to re-type.
I get an ERROR message when I want to transfer my settings. It says I don’t have enough disk space. The file I want to transfer is only 10.5 GB (after I removed all my data). The new machine has 2TB and yet I keep getting this error.
I have tried every possible way of transferring the settings , including : external drive; flash drive; direct wire ; easy transfer cable etc. I keep getting the same ERR message .
I am sure Easy transfer must allow transfer from Win 7 to Win 8. BUT HOW?
PLEASE do help. I would really appreciate very much .
    THANK YOU
    Adam

    This thread may be useful.
Windows Easy Transfer will transfer from one drive to the other to mirror the original drive.  What I suspect is happening is that the program is grabbing the D drive (recovery partition on most systems) and trying to transfer it to the new system which should also have a D drive.  If that is happening,t hen that error will be thrown.
Try using the advanced options and view the report to see what exactly is happening and triggering the message.
    Let me know what happens.
The document in the thread is for a previous version of Windows, but you can search for Easy Transfer Reports from the Start screen in Windows 8.

  • Update frome win8 to win 8.1 error oxc1900101 - ox30018

I have purchased at Toshiba laptop including win8.
After release, I installed win 8.1 easily, following common procedure. It worked perfectly and I was quite happy with it.
Due to some hardware issues, I turned the laptop in for repair.
The motherboard was replaced with a new one, and win 8 was reinstalled when I got the laptop back.
Obviously, I wanted to update to 8.1 once again.
This is where all my problems started.
Apparently the update is being installed, but at 95% of the install process done, it stops and reinstall win8 again.
The error codes oxc1900101 - ox30018 are displayed on the screen.
I have now spent months reading on that same problem online, and tried a lot the proposed solution, but with no luck.
I found many many people who had trouble updating, so clearly, there IS a problem with win 8.1
I have called Microsoft support, who said that Toshiba was responsible.
    Toshiba says to contact Microsoft...
Microsoft wants me to pay 99$ for support, so they will fix it.
But it is supposed to be a FREE and very easy update - why would I pay for that?
I have tried to update drivers, clean start, reinstalled win8 a lot of times, uninstalled anti virus and anti malware, went into bios and disabled usb3, used lan cable instead of wi-fi and many more things, but the same error code still appears every time.
I really hope someone can help me - PLEASE PLEASE!
I don't think it is fair, that I have to buy a new license for win8.1

    H Dennis,
When you roll back to the Windows 8, did it work fine? Was it activated? OEM's license is binding with motherboard.
If you change motherboard, it will not be activated.
Please contact Toshiba to activate it. Then try to upgrade.
The most cause is the hardware compatibility. This guide will be help you check if your computer meet its requirement:

  • Satellite Z930-14F - cannot install Win 8.1 from SCCM 2012 R2 environment

    Dear all,
Sattelite Z series laptops cannot install OS (win 8.1) from our SCCM 2012 R2 environment.
Either no installation is starting, or pxe boot aborted error is showed.
The environment is used to successfully install OS (win 8.1) on different other vendor computers (dell) and virtual machines (hyper-v and vmware).
I've tried both UEFI and CMS boot options and tried to switch off the secure boot. Please advice.
Also, i've read about the "SCCM installation package for Toshiba". Will it help in my situation or is it just driver packages for SCCM?
    Best Regards, Evgeny.

I guess you are speaking about this Toshiba package:
    http://www.toshiba.eu/services/on-demand/business-computing/sdp120gs-v/
I dont have much experience using such SCCM drive package but it definitely compatible with the Toshiba business notebooks. The Satellite / Portege Z930 belong to the business range and I think the package should be compatible.
This package seems to be for all IT administrators who manage devices on the corporate network with SCCM 2012 R2. Toshiba offers with the new Toshiba SCCM package a solution to integrate other notebook into an existing IT infrastructure quickly and smoothly and all Toshiba Driver and application packages and a demonstration task sequence are integrated.
However, it seems that you could get more details about this package directly from Toshiba [email protected]
By the way: The Win 8.1 installation requires the UEFI mode (in case the UEFI BIOS is available). But booting from another, external source requires the disabled secure boot option.
So maybe you should use the UEFI mode but should disable the secure boot option in order to boot from LAN.

  • Trying to install Win 8.1 with Bootcamp on 2013 Macbook Air

I went to the MS website today and bought a Windows 8.1 license for $119.99.  (I need this software to run some windows-only stuff for work.) Then I tried downloading it to my Macbook Air for use with Bootcamp.
But what MS sold me was a Windows executable... and Bootcamp needs an ISO.  So I went looking for ISO's, and downloaded it from two torrent sites. I made two attempts to get Bootcamp to work with these bootleg ISO's.  In each attempt, Bootcamp burned them to my USB stick, then I downloaded the latest Bootcamp drivers partitioned the HD and started the Windows install.
The windows setup program failed, saying there was no install image on my USB stick.  Maybe I need a different USB file?  Or a different Win 8.1 license?  If I have to go buy an external DVD drive just to install this crapware on my Mac, I'll be ******.
    Can anyone give me suggestions?
    Thanks

Is there anyone nearby with a 64 bit Windows machine (it will need to be 64 bit).
I had one already and downloaded the setup.exe, ran it and once downloaded it gives you the chance to make install media. In that option is a chance to create an iso file and that iso can then be used by Bootcamp to install Windows.
I'm not sure there's a way to do it with a Mac. Maybe someone else will give you a better way.

  • G510 install Win 8.1 on a smaller SSD. What files to copy.

Yesterday I got a new G510. The HD is not in good condition after dropping it.
I wanted to swap the 1TB HD 5200 rpm  anyways for my 120 GB SSD.
I can still get at the files on the original HD. What files and/or partitions do I need to copy to the SSD to get a clean Win 8.1 installation after inserting it in the Laptop?  Right now I have both the old HD and the new SSD on another pc. So I can use Reflect.
Please give the name of those partitions. Not the Drive letter. Because the drive is outside the laptop and the drive letters are different in a system with more HD's.
What is the minimum of files to copy to get a basic Win 8.1 without bloatwear?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    hi EricLagerstrom,
The partition table of the G510 is most likely similar to this picture.
AFAIK, it will not be an easy task to perform a clean installation of windows 8.1 on the SSD using the recovery image on the 1TB HDD as its a preconfigured OEM image (OS + Lenovo drivers, apps, and other preloaded softwares).
You can try to look into the recovery partition (last partition - approx 20GB), look for an install.esd file, convert it to install.wim and rebuild it without the preloaded softwares and try to re-image it on the SSD.
    - Link to picture
As an alternative, you can clone or migrate the HDD to the SSD and just uninstall the softwares that you don't like (without affecting system functionality).

  • Install win 8.1 on Helix with format old partition

    Hello All.
I decidedinstall new Win 8.1 from USB disk and formatted partition with old 8.0, when install 8.1 on established patrtion. Everything was established, but now when i try to activate Windows - see error 0x8007007b (The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect). how to activate now or return factory settings?
    Help me ))))

I don't think you can use the embedded UEFI key to activate Windows 8.1. If you have a key from volume licensing, MSDN or something like that you can use that one.
I would recommend installing Windows 8.0 first, updating all the drivers and then updating to Windows 8.1. I had all sorts of issues when installing 8.1 directly on the Helix.
