Win 7 first bootup halting

I have a problem with my installation of win 7 in bootcamp. Its on newest iMac 2.93 w. 4 gb of ram
Creating partition, formatting in win 7, installing goes fine. And everything looks to be in order.
When windows install is rebooting final time, its kinda hard to get dvd out so it wont boot from that. Normally it should just continue if no button is pressed, but it locks and doesnt go further.
I reboot holding left mouse btn and cdrom comes out. I then choose to boot from windows disk.
Heres the problem then again, its just black screen, except from one blinking cursor in top left corner.
Kinda feels like windows partition cant be booted from. though theres plenty of HDD activity in about 20 secs after black screen w blinking cursor.
Tried apples solution w graphics drivers on usb stick, but no go.
Tried both win 7 32 and 64 bit.
Hope u guys know any solution, since i realle wanna game some on this new 27" monster
Sorry for misspells and others bad english.... Location Denmark

Hi Jefoi,
I am attempting to install Windows 7 64bit Ultimate on to my brand new iMac.
I tried following your below directions:
"After you created the partition for windows in bootcamp assistant. choose "Quit and install later". go to "Disk Utility", choose bootcamp partition then click repair disk. Insert windows and restart. This will solve your problem. It works in my macbook pro. cheers."
Unfortunately when I restart with the Windows 7 DVD inserted, it goes to the black screen saying:
"No bootable device -- insert boot disc and press any key"
When I try to press a key on the keyboard, nothing happens!
I note that I'm using a 27" iMac whereas you are using a macbook pro... must be something to do with the iMac graphics drivers?
Thoughts please anyone that has the same model machine as I do and successfully installed win 7 64bit on to it.
Also, do I need to be running the iMac in 64bit mode inorder to install Windows 7 64bit?

  • Re: Issues in first bootup of laptop

I have just purchased a Satellite Pro L500D series notebook, and have tried booting it up for the first time. However, when Windows began, it asked for a username and password, and I have set none as this was the first time I had started the laptop. If anyone could help, that would be much appreciated.
Also, if anyone knows whether this is an issue with the laptop or just Windows 7, it would also be appreciated if you could point this out.
    Thankyou

    > However, when Windows began, it asked for a username and password, and I have set none as this was the first time I had started the laptop.
And what now? What is the problem?
To be honest I cannot understand when this happen exactly. If this happen at the beginning before installation starts just click on next.
One more thing: Every time when you install OS and OS setup will be almost finished you will be asked for username and password. It is logic that you must enter some name.
If your name is Mike please put Mike as username. Password must not be defined.
So your account name for further usage will be Mike.
Later when you want to make HDD recovery installation you will be asked to put username and if you put Mike again the HDD recovery installation will be continued.
It will be nice to see pic of this. Try to make one and send the link where we can see it.

  • 6380e problem with first bootup

Hi, I have a problem that I hope someone may be able to help with.
My computer works great but for one thing and that is, every morning when I switch on the computer it does not complete a clean boot and freezes, this can happen at any stage of the boot e.g.: dos, windows or even in bios.
This only happens when the system has been shutdown over night, and it take me several reboots usually 4 or 5 before it boots correctly, then I have no problems no matter how many time I reboot.

    Thanks for the help wonkanoby.
After receiving your comment about the power supply I tested mine and found that it was unstable, at present I am using the power supply from another system and all seems O.K.
Can you recommend a power supply and supplier?

  • Win 7 upgrade causes intermittent IE 8 "Cannot display the webpage" errors

I upgraded my Touchsmart IQ846t from Vista Home Prem 64-bit to Win 7 Home prem 64-bit last week, 9/20/10.
After the upgrade there were about 40 - 50 Windows Updates that I also installed.  About 2 days later I began having my problem.  When I first bootup I have full access to the Internet.  After 20 - 30 minutes, however, if I try to open, or reopen, IE8 I get the subject error.  My internet connection, using a wireless broadband MiFi card, is still connected to the internet but IE8 won't open (Firefox and AOL won't either).  The usual Microsoft diagnostics, FixIts, etc are no help.  The only way to get IE back is to reboot.
Also, I have an HP laptop that was upgraded to Win 7 Home Prem 64-bit at the same time.  It uses the wireless card to connect to the internet and has had none of the IE issues I am experiencing with the Touchsmart.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Lizzyb,
First, make sure you have the updated Win7 drivers for your wireless LAN.  If you update the drivers and find that there are still issues, I would try a System Restore and go back to 9/20 (before installing all the updates) and verify that the hardware works with Win7.

  • What is the difference between Wine, Wineskin, Winery and Wine Bottler, and how do I get Wine to *ACTUALLY* work in Mountain Lion?

Ok, so this is my first post here and I am admittedly terrible at forums. Someone might say, "This was addressed in the ___________ thread by __________! Go read it!" --- that may be so but I've spent enough hours trying to google this problem into submission to no avail based on what is apparently working for others, so I would like a chance to get specific answers to specific questions that aren't from Mar 2011, etc.
So first of all, I'm confused by all the various Wine programs/apps/whatevers. I've seen Wine, Wineskin, Winery, Wine Bottler, and at this point I wouldn't be surprised if there are even more than that. What's the difference between all of these and how do they work with one another? What do I actually need to get windows programs working?
All of my google searches have led me to people giving out fish, but no one giving out fishing lessons. I'm not a pro at mac and windows and all that, but I'm a fairly bright individual who gets VERY frustrated, very quickly, when I don't understand the why and how of something I'm attempting.
I've also found "answers" where the person attempting to help starts off helpful enough, but degrades into the most archaic of techno-babble after about 5-6 sentences. On the other hand, I've watched tutorials on youtube where the poster decides to skip (apparently crucial) sections of the tutorial, and mutters such gems as: "... you might wanna have to run Wine first before you can do anything, cuz I think it has to configure it and set up a bunch of stuff"
    O.o
A happy medium between techno-babble and the most basic of explanations would be ideal for me, and I'd imagine for others as well.
Here is a summarized history of my relationship with Wine:
Diablo II - I downloaded this awesome thing which ended up being... uh... I guess Diablo II in a Wineskin "wrapper". I'm not sure, all I know is that it's a D2 icon, and if I go to 'show package contents', it's got C drive, Program Files, et cetera inside of it. I double click it, it launches D2, and it works like a dream. <3
'Vanilla Install' - That's what I heard someone call it. It was the command/terminal style install using xquartz and xcode found at http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/. I followed every instruction to the letter, and got all the way to '$ sudo port install wine', at which point it started going smoothly, free from the possible error he described regarding the installation of xcode, and then just failed after I left the room to use the restroom and came back. Please don't ask me to repeat what the error was, because honestly, after reading more things on the interwebs, I'm confused as to why it's even necessary to go through all of that, so I'd rather not try that route again anyways, rendering the error message quite possibly irrelevant.
Wine + Wine Bottler - So I decided to try to seek out an easier method, as I know that one must exist that doesn't involve command lines. I found a video tutorial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0BBkISOcEA, and oh man would it be great if that method had actually worked. Again, I followed all instructions provided to procure my free fish, and at the point in the video where he declares that "xquarts or x11 will open" - it doesn't open. Nothing opens. I was trying to install Star Sonata, btw.
So here I am, thoroughly worn out, frustrated at all the random places Wine is installed on my mac now, and just want someone to explain it all, from top down, without getting toooooooo technical on me. I know that might be asking a lot...

    ## I know that the poster has already found a solution, but the following is a possible answer for others that have similar issues.
For Winebottler, just go to their website and download it. Run the program. Choose .wine as your prefix (best choice) or whatever suits you best. You'll need a functional X11. If you can't use the one that comes with your mac, download the latest one from the website.
If your issue is one with Winebottler's Wine not running correctly due to X11, then you have a pretty ugly problem, although a simple upgrade is the best solution (Upgrade XQuartz.app).
    http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/#part-1
The above website is the easiest way to get REAL wine on your computer. First of all, Wineskin WInery, etc. are NOT WINE. They are 3rd party apps that may use Wine or may have originally part of Wine, but they are no longer up to date with Wine. WineBottler is currently up to date with the stable releases of Wine (but not the maintenence releases).
For the website tutorial and to run Wine on your mac without using a thrid party app, you will need to know a few things.
First, you will need to know basic control of the command line. That means, sudo (you must know the administrator password to your computer), and the forms of cd (change directory).
Second, you will need Xcode. Download 4.2 (stable) or whatever other versions you want, but beware: It is over 1 GB, and you will need time for it to work.
Third, you will need to get MacPorts and configure it. The tutorial should have this data.
When you download wine (use sudo port install wine-devel for the latest development release of wine), it will first download a lot of dependencies. This will take a while. After that, it will download wine itself.
After obtaining wine, to run a program, open the terminal.app window.
    cd desktop/XYZ/ZYZ\ WRQ
The above will first enter the desktop, then folder XYZ, then folder ZYZ WRQ. From here,
    wine th11e.exe
Or whatever executable you are trying to open. (Using Subterranean Animism as my example).
It should, in theory, run the program. Watch the terminal for errors. If there is an X11 problem, then it's not wine acting up. If the app crashes or has other issues, check the Wine Application Database to see if your app is compatible with wine.
If you have any further questions or other things, feel free to reply; I may or may not get back to you, but there's a good chance that someone will come in eventually. Otherwise, the Wine Wiki should have some information.

  • World of Warcraft MOP wine OpenGL xf86-video-ati Radeon HD7870

    Good evening ladies and gentlement.
I try to run World of Warcraft (currently 5.3) on my machine.
    My setup:
    linux 3.10.6-2-ARCH
    xorg-server 1.14.2-2
    xf86-video-ati 1:7.2.0-1
    mesa 9.1.6-1
    wine 1.7.0-1
    World of Warcraft 5.3
    Radeon HD7870 GHz Edition
With D3D9 the game renders correctly but with a agonizing low framerate.
So I searched the web and found out that one can change the rendering mode to OpenGL.
This gave me very fast but also incomplete renders 1, 2.
When I try to enter the world I get this error.
This is what I get when I run the game:
    wine Wow-64.exe >& somelog.txt

The 20-radeon.conf for my xorg-server setting:

It seems my graphics card can not handle ColorTiling (i get a very pixelated image).
    KMS is enabled.
At the official feature matrix of the open source driver you might see something which is causing my problems which I am not able to notice because my lack of understanding it (HD7870 is S(outhern).Islands).
Also I tried to install the proprietary driver of amd from the aur.
The problem is that this package has this dependency
    xorg-server<1.14.0
which makes it unuseable for me.
So i edited the PKGBUILD to accept my xorg-server 1.14.2 (do not judge me ).
    I run
    aticonfig --initial=dual-head
    and rebooted.
Hardly anything worked (most programs would not start).
So I reinstalled the open source driver.
Hopefully someone can help me with this problem... I do not mind installing the proprietary driver if it works.
    Kind regards,

Thank you for your help Thaodan.
Sometimes I miss the utterly easiness of installing something on my windows machine :'( .
As far as I have read one has to wait for a new release of the proprietary driver, which supports xorg-server 1.14.XY, or to downgrade the xorg-server to the last supported version, which is xorg-server 1.13.XY (and sounds rather painfull).
xorg-server 1.14.0 was released  on 2013-05-05... three and a half months and no new driver to support it... I am really dissapointed (seems like nvidia does not depend on xorg-server versions... why?).
Concerning your advice about the patch for wine:
I have downloaded this patch and cloned the source files from the git repository.
Do I have to apply the patch manually?
What has to be done next?
The instructions of the readme would not work because of the missing 32 bit development libraries:
    ./tools/wineinstall
    Wine Installer v1.0
Warning !! wine binary (still) found, which may indicate
    a (conflicting) previous installation.
You might want to abort and uninstall Wine first.
(If you previously tried to install from source manually,
run 'make uninstall' from the wine root directory)
We need to install Wine as the root user. Do you want us to build Wine,
'su root' and install Wine? Enter 'no' to build Wine without installing:

configure: error: Cannot build a 32-bit program, you need to install 32-bit development libraries.
    Configure failed, aborting install.
How do I get those libraries (nothing found :-( )?
Your PKGBUILD requests a wine.install file... where do I find it?
You have to install gcc-multilib and such.
the wine.install is inclued in the same dir of my repo. I made a src package so you don't have to pull my whole git repo: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/172 … src.tar.gz

  • K7T Turbo2 Hangs on bootup..HELP!!

For some reason, my Turbo2 with the latest 3.6 bios stalls during the drive initialization bootup. In other words, while it scans for the drives, floppy, cdrom and harddrive during bootup the system would just hang. I would have to press the reset buttom for the system to reboot and would bootup just fine the second time.
Why is doing this? Other than the hanging up on the first bootup after the computer has been off, the computer runs just fine.
    Any ideas??
    Here are the specs:
    K7T Turbo2 w/ latest bios 3.6
    AMD Tbird 1.3ghz
    256mb PC133 SDRAM
    20gig maxtor HD
    TNT2 M64 32mb video card
    300watt inwin S500 case
    Guillemot Maxi Muse sound card
    100mb internal zip drive
    52x generic cdrom
    1.44 floppy
    Windows XP Pro with SP1

    Thanks Bas,
I flashed to the latest because the latest bios allowed my k7tturbo2 to support 2400+, and 2600+ amd XP cpus.  With the 3.5 it would only allow support up to only 2200+.   I don't have the 2400+ as of yet, on order at the momment.
    Thanks again.

  • Need script to run on first boot then remove itself

I am working on panther and tiger images to deploy in labs at middle schools. There is a piece of software that the district owns that is network aware and each computer on a network running this software needs its own individual station number set in a config file. I have written a script that will set this number to be the last 3 digits of the static ip address of the computer and i can run this from ard on multiple computers but i would like to somehow include this script in the image so it is run the first time the computer boots up after being cloned and then does not run again. We also use virex on these computers and when we clone with virex installed we are having problems updating the defs. I would like to also be able to have a folder with the virex package file in it and on first bootup after the clone have a script run and install virex on the first boot.
I am sure this is not too difficult but I have not done anything like this before, maybe a couple oneliners to get me started, Thanks.

  • Wine -- two question

I have two (probably simple) questions concerning Wine:
First, I screwed up my configuration and wanted to reinstall so I did this:
sudo pacman -R wine and then reinstalled it.  The problem is, it didn't recopy the fake windows folder that it uses (the part that was messed up)  If I want to start completely over, what should I do?
    Second question:
    Upon reinstall, I got this:
    Targets: wine-0.9.5-1
    Total Package Size: 12.8 MB
    Proceed with upgrade? [Y/n] y
    checking package integrity... done.
    loading package data... done.
    checking for file conflicts... done.
    >>> As of kernel 2.6.9, WINE will not work unless you enable the Legacy
    >>> VM Layout. You can do this like so:
    >>>
    >>> # echo "vm.legacy_va_layout = 1" >>/etc/sysctl.conf
    >>> # sysctl -p
    upgrading wine... done.
    So I tried this:
    [nehsa@serverass1300 Program Files]$ echo "vm.legacy_va_layout = 1" >>/etc/sysctl.conf
    bash: /etc/sysctl.conf: Permission denied
    [nehsa@serverass1300 Program Files]$ sudo echo "vm.legacy_va_layout = 1" >>/etc/sysctl.conf
    bash: /etc/sysctl.conf: Permission denied
    [nehsa@serverass1300 Program Files]$
Am I missing something?  Is there a different way to do this?

Directing output ( >> ), is done by the shell, and so it has only your user's permissions, not root's.
i.e. you echo as root, but redirect output as user.
So snowman's second solution should work wonders

  • My plan on installing Win 7 on new T500 with XP installed.

I have a T500 2082 on order.  It comes with XP Pro installed. I have a full Windows 7 that I intend to install.
    Here is my initial plan:
Do the BIOS upgrade v3.11/3.10 dated 27 Nov 2009.
Copy the C:\SWTOOLS folder to other media for drivers etc.
Install Windows 7 -- maybe 64-bit. Probably a fresh install.
    Let Windows 7 choose drivers.
Install ThinkVantage System Update 4.0, and let that get the appropriate Lenovo drivers. I will have another computer to download drivers from the website if the need arises.
Install ThinkVantage System Update 4.0, and let that get the appropriate Lenovo drivers.I will have another computer to download drivers from the website if the need arises.
If something does not work, remove the existing driver, reboot, and provide the Lenovo driver when Windows 7 finds the hardware.
I am concerned that I will lose extra applications, such as the ability to play DVD movies. Will I find installation for those extras in the C:\SWTOOLS folder?
Comments, suggestions? Is there maybe a FAQ that I have missed? This ThinkPad is for personal use rather than business.
    Thanks.

Copying the C:/SWTools doesn't help that much. Most likely the original stuff is in the S: and Q: drives. What you need to do is to invest in 3 DVD Roms and do a creation of recovery disc. Almost every other lenovo user don't do that on their first bootup and then they messed up the system and can't recover.
@The OP: if you want the DVD player, you wil have to copy it from SWTOOLS.  That's where the installer is.  AFAIK, you can't browse the recovery images to get it.  You can download the update from the Lenovo site but it won't install unless you install the original version first.
OTOH, by all means, make the XP recovery media before touching anything else.  That should be printed in RED on the outside of the box the laptops come in.

  • Snow Leopard killed my vga displays!!

This is by far the most weird problem I have ever encountered after upgrading to a new OS.
I run a company where we have something like 15 different Macs. Mostly Intel, but different ages, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, iMacs, Mac Mini etc.
A couple of days ago I wanted to upgrade one of the Mac Pros to Snow Leopard. It's an early 2008 3.1 with ATI hd 2600 graphics. I wanted to do a clean install, but instead of backing up everything from the system drive, I pulled it out and put in a new clean one. This way I could retrieve the data from the old drive when I need it through a USB docking station or something.
Installation went by fast and without any problems what so ever.
But first thing I noticed when the first bootup was completed was that the resolution of my monitors were suddenly completely wrong. I have two Samsung Syncmaster 2343nw monitors connected through vga, and they have always been detected and automatically been set to the correct resolution in the display preferences dialog by the old Leopard. I have around 9 of these monitors working as dual displays on Leopard machines, and a few working as extra external monitors for a couple of Macbook Pros running both Snow Leopard and Leopard. They are all connected via an dvi to vga converter and they always get detected correctly as "Syncmaster" in Display preferences.
But suddenly now, they just show up as "VGA Monitor" in Display preferences.
After fighting with this for a couple of hours trying all the suggested workarounds I could find, zapping PRAM deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist changing the cables and so on, I finaly gave up. Fortunately I didn't overwrite the old Leopard installation so of cause I could just swap the drives back and everything should be dandy after booting back into the old Leopard install.
But **** no! Now the resolution was equally messed up in Leopard! And none of the two monitors were detected as "Syncmaster" in display pref. Now they only show up as "VGA Monitor" as they did in Snow. ***?? How can an OS mess with a monitors plug 'n' play capabilities?
I then tried the obvious which was to try and reset the monitors, remove power from them, Zap the PRAM again. I even tried a different graphics card (that didn't work in this machine) but what ever I did, the monitors where no longer detectable by the OS.
Next step was to take some identical monitors from a different machine. And yes, they where detected by Leopard on the problem machine. Since I couldn't believe that Snow had actually ruined the other two monitors I booted back into Snow hooping that it would now detect these other identical monitors. But no, same problem. Back to Leopard, and once again now suddenly these couldn't be detected by Leopard either.
I have since tried these monitors on all the other Macs I have in the company, and only one machine with an nVidia card is able to detect them correctly as Syncmaster. But none the less also this machine isn't able to see the monitors native resolution thus making it impossible to select the right setting for the monitor.
So now I have 4 monitors that's virtually unusable after being in contact
I have read a lot about people who who suddenly can't use their secondary monitor after upgrading to Snow Leopard and that Apple is aware of this, and that 10.6.4 should address this problem when we finally get some new graphic drivers. But I haven't heard about anybody who's monitor lost it's plug 'n' play capabilities after being in contact with Snow Leopard.
But maybe someone here has had any similar experience? Maybe somebody else has had luck with upgrading a dual vga monitor system to Snow Leopard? I would love to get some ideas on what happened since these monitors doesn't really work anymore on any computer.
    Thanks!

Hmm... I know that the screens native refresh rate is at 60 Hz and the resolution is 2048 x 1152. I'm unable to check it out now but I'm pretty sure I can't select 60Hz. They only have VGA connectors (the same as D-Sub I guess?) And the closest I can get to the right resolution is 1920x 1280 (or maybe it's 1200, not sure) which looks almost right, but then again not, and a whole lot more fuzzy than it used to be.
On some machines the displays are detected as "Display" and on others "VGA monitor" or "VGA display". It's supposed to detect as "Syncmaster". Nothing changes if I press "Detect". I've only tried on machines running 10.5.8, and one brand new iMac running 10.6.3 through a display port to vga converter.
But thanks for link to the toms article. I'll give it a read

  • T60 HDD res. partition, USB ports and DVD-RAM drive no longer recognizing data/media!

I have a base installation of the IBM T60.. I made no modifications to the setup or configuration of how the HDD is structured nor have I downloaded and installed any strange drivers... only automatically downloaded drivers from Microsoft update and manually downloaded driver updates from the Lenovo website.
One day everything was working fine.  Next day, my USB devices, reserved partition (can't remember what this is called) and the DVD-RAM drive stopped working but power was still getting to these devices.
My DVD-RAM drive is seen as a DVD-RAM on first bootup.  When I insert a CD or DVD media in the drive, the Explorer tree changes DVD-RAM to CD-ROM in the Explorer (really strange).  It behaves like there is no media in the drive.  Cannot boot with that drive either.
In addition, I have external USB HDD and Flash drives as well.  None of them work on this T60 anymore.
When I plug in an external USB HDD or Flash drive, I get "not formatted" error message and a prompt to format my drives?!
I tested these USB external drives on a desktop machine and verified that they are working 100% fine.  So the problem has something to do with my IBM/Lenovo T60.
It almost seems like something broke on the motherboard perhaps?  I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates as well to no avail.  Please help.  Thanks in advance for your time and consideration of this issue.

  • ITunes no longer letting me know it can't find artwork

I've recently purchased a large, external raid drive setup, and am importing all of my CDs into iTunes. When I first started doing it, if no artwork could be found when I imported a CD, it would come up with a message window saying that no album artwork could be found. This was nice, as I didn't have to go and check each CD as I imported it. No artwork found, I get a message.
Well, for some reason, it no longer pops up with the message. I know there's a check box on the message window to no longer display it, and I know I didn't check it, but I thought, let me reset the warnings anyway, in case I clicked it by accident. So, went into Advanced Properties and reset the warnings. Well, that reset all the warnings, except for the no artwork found warning. So, I then turned off automatic artwork downloading in Store Preferences, reset the warnings again, and then restarted iTunes. I turned artwork downloading back on, and lo and behold, the warning message came back. For two CDs. And then promptly stopped coming up again.
Any ideas on why this is happening? I am running the latest update for iTunes, 10.1.1. If there is something I need to do to get this message to pop up again, I would greatly appreciate it. I have about 800 CDs I have to import, and I don't like having to check each one in iTunes to see if the artwork is there or not. Thanks!

first it halted during the install and said it was looking for a netowrk resource that was unavailable. Then it said it was looking for itunes.msi.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Hard Drive Failure: Software or Hardware

My computer stopped working recently. I had not installed anything new and nothing else changed, but one day I could not log in or even boot (grey screen spinning dial). Disk repair indicated I had an "invalid node structure: that was not repairable. Disk Warrior said my directory could not be repaired, but allowed me to back up, thank goodness.
After consulting tech support, I then erased the hard drive and reinstalled from the original Leopard Disk. OK, but when I ran software update to the newest version of Leopard, the install process hanged (during "patching"). I erased, reinstalled and again the install process hanged (during "writing package receipt"). So I then erased and installed but did not update. Computer is quirky (sometimes can be unpredictably very slow), but has a minimum functionality. Disk utility indicates the computer again has an unrepairable "invalid node structure."
My hard drive is still under hardware guarantee. Is this a hardware problem?

Sounds like it could be the hard drive failing. I have yet to see a directory that Disk Warrior 4.0 cannot rebuild/replace unless there is a hard drive problem preventing it. Three things you can try before calling Apple support. First bootup to the install Disk but before going through the installation process, under the Utilities menu at the top, open up Disk Utility. Here you want to reformat the drive but click on security options and select to Zero Out Data. This will write zeros to every block on the drive and usually if there is a bad block the format will fail. Second, hold down the D key and boot to the Apple Hardware Test on original install disk. This doesn't really check your hard drive but it checks the rest of your hardware and Apple will probably have you run this test anyway. Run the extended test. Finally if you have Apple Care then install TechTool Deluxe from the cd that came in the Apple Care box. Run TechTool and under the options select Surface Scan. This will check the drive for bad blocks. If the drive is bad you are bound to find an error somewhere. Just make sure all of your data is still backed up.

  • .wmv's getting cut in half horizontally inside Premiere Pro, AE, Media Encoder...

Hello everyone! I'm having an issue using .WMV's within Premiere Pro, AE, and the Media Encoder. Whenever I open the image in a sequence or the source window, the image is cut in half horizontally (see pic below). I brought in an MP4 and had no issues so at the moment I think I have narrowed down to strictly a .WMV problem. The file plays perfectly fine in realtime; audio sounds great, picture (of what I can see) looks good; I am just missing the top half of any WMV file hehe. I have tried the WMV inside AE as well but have the same issue. I also tried to export the WMV with Media Encoder but it exports the WMV cut in half no matter what format I tell it to conver the file to..
My Premiere Pro, AE, and Media Encoder are fully up to date; my Nvidia 660 Ti is up to date; I just installed latest Windows 7 codec package; Just installed newest Windows 7 x64 updates.
Also, this is a big one to note...This is the first time I have used Premiere Pro/AE/Media Encoder on this system. I just built this PC about 1 month ago and have had 0 problems with it across other programs (Photoshop, 3ds max, etc..) I just recently installed Premiere, AE, Media Encoder on it and am running into this problem upon my first bootup of Premiere/AE/Media Encoder.
My system specs are posted below the picture and file specs.
The pic below shows my setup and the issue I am having. The video of Finding Nemo on the left is the .MP4 (specs on file are below) and the video on the right is the .WMV in question (specs also below.)
I have tried multiple WMV's of different bit rates, etc, and all of them do this "cut in half thing.." No issues with other file types though!

It appears that Microsoft has issued the fixed update:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms13-057
    See the "Update FAQ" section:
"Why was this bulletin revised on August 13, 2013?
Microsoft revised this bulletin to rerelease the 2803821 update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
The rereleased update addresses an application compatibility issue in which WMV encoded video could fail to properly render during playback. Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 customers should install the rereleased update."
