Win 7 PC cannot connect to Time Capsule - despite flawless I'net connection

Hi, strange thing and I'd appreciate if someone knew a trick to solve it:
Although my Windows notebook can connect to the internet via our Time Capsule (WPA2 key, AES encryption) without any problems for a long time now, I cannot connect to it via AirPort even with the correct WPA key.
When running the AirPort utility I can see our TC with its name and IP address (10.0.1.1 as usual, I think) in the main view. After clicking "Manual Setup" or "Continue" in the main view, AirPort asks for the password.
After entering the password (same as the one that is in my settings for the WLAN connection via TC, of course), *TC REFUSES TO CONNECT* and the *"Enter password" window will appear over and over again*. No specific error message given.
The WLAN connection has been set up using the MacBook (I once read this could be a problem). Working proberly
all the time, though.
Tried deactivating both firewall and virus protection of my Norton security package on my Lenovo - no effect.
Background:
We intend to use an external USB hard drive which is connected to our Time Capsule. After TC has moaned that the drive had to be "repaired", we created partitions for Mac (OS X) and Windows (FAT) partition from the MacBook.
The MacBook can access the drive and partitions. Fine.
The Windows 7 notebook won't show the hard drive nor the Time Capsule. Thus, I have installed AirPort utility (V 5.5.1) to get access to the USB hard drive. And there I am - kinda stuck halfway...
Hardware setup:
Lenovo ThinkPad X61, Windows 7 Pro
MacBook, OS X 10.5.8
Time Capsule
1.0TB Buffalo Drive Station USB 3.0 plugged into Time Capsule
Help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks a lot,
Mark

I found something that worked for me. I got Error Number 53 when trying to connect to my time capsule using Airport Base Station Agent with windows vista. I think the issue is allowing your time capsule to be accessed over Bonjour; I think this feature is disabled by default. Well, here is what I did (also, this may answer the question for those of you who are confused to why it asks for a username/password when you attempted to map the time capsule's hdd) -
In Airport Utility: Airport >> Time Capsule
- Click "Edit..." and check the "Use dynamic global hostname" box.
- Enter in the info (for hostname, I used the same name as the local Hostname (at the top of that window, for user/password -- The info you enter here is the same info you must enter when you are prompted to, that is if you try to map the time capsule's hdd)
- Click "OK"
In Airport Utility: Disks >> Files Sharing
- Make sure "Share disks over WAN" is checked AND make sure "Share disks over the Internet using Bonjour" is checked as well.
- Click OK.
In Airport Utility: Click "Update", let it reset, and try accessing the Time Capsule via Airport Base Station Agent as you usually would/or mapping the harddrive"
In summary, since vista uses Bonjour, you must make sure your time capsule is 'Bonjour-accessible'
I Hope this solution alleviates a lot of people's problems!!!
Oh yea, this solution worked with firmware 7.4.1
AND...prior to trying this method, I did enable NETBIOS. It was enabled while I did this solution (and still is). I haven't tried it with it disabled (well maybe not disabled - it's on automatic by default).

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.
This is the most relevant I think. http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
But look at the whole section B setup problems.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.
See if you can get Pondini to respond.. !!

  • I took my laptop on vacation and it says the computer cannot find the time capsule cannot connection; the wireless still works.  How do I get it to reconnect

I had my MacBook Pro running Mt Lion OS X 10.8.3 disconnected from my Time Capsule, gen4 for a month.  Upon returning, I get the message that my computer cannot connect to the Time Capsule for backup.  It does however, pick up the wireless internet.  How do I reconnect for backup?

Just pretend you are setting it up for the first time, and follow the directions here:

  • Cannot access prior time capsule backup

    Hi,
About 2 weeks ago I ran into a problem with my iPhoto library.  I was trying to import photos from a camera and it took forever.  After watching iPhoto being non-responsive for several hours I decided to force it to quit via the Activity Monitor.  After I re-launched iPhoto, I noticed that there were many photos missing (shown as grey boxes) in my iPhoto library, but I can still locate the original photos through the finder.  I did a rebuild in iPhoto but that did not fix the problem.  In the meantime, my Time Capsule was running and did several backups.  After tinkering with the iPhoto problem for another day without much success, I decided to restore from Time Capsule the version of the iPhoto library before I ran into the import problem.
The first time I tried to restore from Time Machine, it failed because I didn't have enough disk space left on my MBP.  My old iPhoto library was 150 GB but I only had 10 GB of free space left on my MBP.  So I decided to erase the rebuilt iPhoto library (around 120 GB) and other large files on my MBP to free up some space.  When I tried to empty the trach can, it took hours and eventually became stuck with little activity going on.  After waiting patiently for a few more hours, I decided to re-launch the Finder but could not and had to force it to quit.  Then I rebooted.  Afterwards, I took everything out of the trach can and placed files into the trash can one at a time and emptying it with only one item in the trash can.  I was able to delete and empty the trash can this way, but a new problem appeared.  In both the Activity Monitor and Finder's Get Info, the space free number stopped changing regardless of how many files I deleted and emptied on my MBP.  By my own estimate I should have at least 180 GB of free space but the system seemed to think that there was only 140 GB of free space and I still could not restore the original iPhoto library.
I thought perhaps by forcing the Finder to quit while it was trying to empty the trash can had somehow corrupted the file system.  So I re-installed Lion from the recovery disk assistant.  When Lion was installed and going through its initial set-up procedures, I made the mistake of not choosing "restore from time machine backup" because I was afraid doing so would also restore the corrupted file system.  I also made the mistake of accepting the default name for my MBP instead of using the name I had before.  Fortunately re-installing Lion did resolve the free disk space issue.  Next I rebooted with Lion's recovery disk assistant and chose "restore from time machine backup".  The restore took a long time and did work, but it restored to the snapshot of my system without the iPhoto library.  Because the restore took a long time, I wasn't sitting at my desk the entire time.  After the restore was completed, Time Machine did a backup under the name machine name.  Now I cannot find my old Time Machine backup from which to restore my original iPhoto library.
I have tried holding down the control key while clicking on the Time Machine icon to invoke the "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" option, but it found nothing.  From a Finder window, I can connect to my Time Capsule.  It shows that there is a disk called Data-1.  When I open Data-1, there is a MBP13.sparsebundle, which is not the original sparsebundle.  Is there a way to re-access my old Time Machine backup?
From the Time Machine panel in systems preferences, it shows that there is only 20 GB of space left in Time Capsule (out of 500 GB).  I think my old backup is still there.  I've read Pondini's Time Machine Troubleshooting but still cannot resolve this problem.  What am I missing?  Any insight is greatly appreciated!

I had to have my Time Capsule repaired a few years ago.
By Apple?  I've never heard of them repairing one; they just replace them.  Any idea what they did?
Since then, the backup disk was always labeled Data-1.  I have restarted my Time Capsule a few times and the result is the same each time.
What do you see via the Finder?  In Column View, it should be something like this:
I also tried to use TechTool Pro to check the Time Capsule but couldn't do so because connecting my MBP to the Time Capsule's USB port does not seem to give it access.  (Is there a way?)
No, the USB port is for connecting a disk or printer only, not a Mac.  Disk Utility or similar 3rd-party apps can't see the TC's disk; they can see, and may be able to repair, a sparse bundle if you can mount it via the Finder.  See #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
I suspect that my old backups are still in the Time Capsule but because my computer name has changed it is not allowing me access to the old backup.
Changing the computer name won't cause that.  Replacing the logic board in your Mac will, or sometimes if the sparse bundle is damaged, Time Machine will create a new one.

  • HT1178 my airport utility cannot find my Time Capsule

My time capsule is connected to my mac pro but in trying to set it up my Airport Utility cannot find it.

    Connected by ethernet?
    Airport turned off?
No other connections .. do it in complete isolation.
Do factory reset. That will not harm the backups at all. But it will get the TC functional if that is possible.
If you have issues.. please give us info on the ethernet setup in the computer.. it should be set to dhcp and get IP from the TC.. 10.0.1.2

  • HT1178 Airport utility cannot find Airport Time Capsule base station

I just purchased the new AirPort Time Capsule 2TB and after trying to set it up with my MAC I realized that the AirPort utility software was old and instead tried setting it up with my ipad that has iOS 6.1.3. However eventhow I remain connected in the internet, I cannot find any base station with the updated AirPort utility. Reseting Time Capsule and modem has not helped. Has anyone else had the same problem and how have you solved it?

Sorry, can you please clarify, and provide a bit more information?
You can "see" the Time Capsule using your iPad, but not using AirPort Utility on your Mac, correct?
If yes, what version of AirPort Utility do you have on your Mac?  If you are not sure, open AirPort Utility, click the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen and click About AirPort Utility.
Post back with the version number that you see there.

  • Airport utility cannot find new time capsule

I have moved house and bought a new time capsule. The airport utility cannot find it. As context, I have successfully set up the new wi-fi network - should I use this to connect to the time capsule of my main wifi network ? I have also done a factory reset already. I think the cables are correctly plugged in - from the LAN output on my router to the WAN port on the TC - is this right ?

As context, I have successfully set up the new wi-fi network - should I use this to connect to the time capsule of my main wifi network ?
No, your cabled connection is far superior.
I have moved house and bought a new time capsule. The airport utility cannot find it.
Do you have iphone or ipad?? If so download the airport utility for iOS.. it is far superior to the Mac version.. and should be able to discover it.
If you need to do it from the Mac.. start over.. sorry .. yet another factory reset is helpful.. do it properly like this.
    1. The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local only.
    3. After the reset the TC will appear in the WiFi as a new device. And in the Airport utility as Other Wi-Fi Devices (1) which you click.. from upper left corner of the AU.
    4. No luck do it the hard way. Or what I should say.. is the exact manual method that brooks no exceptions due to lousy networking in Mavericks.
Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet.. make sure IPv6 is also set link-local only in the ethernet interface of the computer.. and simply do full manual setup. Turn wireless off in the computer. You can do this in full network isolation.. ie TC plugged into computer. Start with factory reset.. that is assumed before the following steps.
These are the steps for manual configuration.
    1. Make sure you are getting an IP in the computer from the TC.. the router must show 10.0.1.1 after a reset. The computer will be 10.0.1.2
    2. Open the airport utility and go to the top menu area. Open File / Configure Other.
    3. Type in your IP address.. after a factory reset there is no password required. But if it complains it is public
    Click ok.
    4. You will then get the full edit screens where you can manually setup the TC to whatever you want.
    5. For mavericks I strongly recommend changing to all SMB compatible names, ie short 2-20 characters.
    No spaces and Pure alphanumeric.
    eg
    6. Use same rules for wireless. Set security to WPA2 Personal..
use a password of 10-20 characters mixed case and numbers... but still pure alphanumeric.
You can use a different name for 5ghz if you want.
You can also set channels at least for 2.4ghz I am not sure if 5ghz is relevant for AC models.

  • Cannot print through Time Capsule to HP P1005

I cannot print to my HP P1005 through my Time Capsule. It has always been flaky connecting from my PCs on the network or my Mac. Now NOTHING can print to it. The Time Capsule shows the printer correctly. When I try to print to it from my Mac, the status just goes from "Printing" to "Stopped". I have tried various sequences of turning it on and rebooting the Time Capsule, but to no avail.

open your system preferences > print & fax
click on your printer, and click the - sign to remove it.
click on the + sign to add it again using bonjour

  • Cannot restore from Time Capsule after hard drive replacement (recall)!

Hard drive was replaced on a recall from Apple. I have spent weeks on the phone with Applecare whose conclusion now is that a WD drive I had connected about a year ago (and which was disconnected and software uninstalled) has corrupted the files on the Time Capsule (?) Anyone heard of that?
I am a photographer and all my photos are there (?) The capsule appears to be quite full.
Anyways Apple won't pay for recovery since they say 3d party software caused the issue.. WHY DO THEY SELL THOSE DRIVES IN THE STORE THEN?
    Solutions anyone?

    See Pondini's <a href="http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html">TM FAQs</a>, for starters.
As for why they carry 3rd-party stuff in the stores, that's to satisfy their customers desires, but they don't guarantee them to work. WD externals have s a history of being crapola w/Macs, since they're focused on windows boxes.

  • Time Capsule flashes amber (slow) and not being picked up by Airport Utility; cannot set up Time Capsule

Airport Time Capsule purchased in Canada, trying to set up in home in Mexico.  Connected to isp via ethernet cable, tried resets and power off/on on both TC and isp modem.  TC flashes amber (slow), and is not picked up by Airport Utility on Macbook or iPad.  Do I have a faulty TC that has to be returned?  Wireless signal from provider is strong and reliable for last 5 yrs.  Please help

Got it figured :-)  Unable to pick up TC via Airport Utility on MacBook Pro or iPad. Used iPad via Settings-WiFi to pick up TC and enter edit functions. Once WAN deselected, Bridge selected, DHCP selected got the steady green light on the TC.  Airport utility now picks up the TC no problem on both iPad and Macbook.  System now fully operational.

  • My Airport Utility cannot find my time capsule.

I'm having problems to configure my time capsule!
I'm plugging by cable the TC, my internet moden and my Macbook pro in the correct places.
I read the manual and I did everything according to it.
After this error, I have to reset my TC to be able to find it on Airport Utility.
I already bought this Time Capsule with a broken cable that I changed in the Technical Assistance of Apple in Milan.
I bought this TC in New York, US and I'm trying to use in Milan, Italy.
Is the first time I'm having problems with an Apple product. And it's really hard to find answers for this problem.
Searching on internet, it's easy to find a lot o people dissatisfied with the TC.
    Thanks,
    Thiago

Lion with v6 airport utility.. is at least part if not all the problem.. download and install 5.6 utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Set up the computer and TC with no other connections.. just one ethernet between them. Be thankful you still have ethernet btw.. with it being dropped in new MBP.
Turn off the airport wireless in the mac... then try again.. use reset.. it will come available.. but don't be surprised if you need to reboot the computer and TC every couple of days.. that is the new feature of Mac OS .. just like windows.

I'm trying to save to Time Capsule. I've tried drag-n-drop, keyboard commands, and choices from drop-down menus. I'm getting the error message "Connection Failed." Help, anyone?

Thx. 15 have read this question on the Time Capsule forum, but thus far, no replies there. It is good to know, however, that real people are reading the questions.

  • Cannot stream from time capsule attached disk to Apple TV

    Hi,
I have my movies and TV Shows on a disk connected to my Time Capsule. All these videos are present in iTunes and when I want to watch them on my Mac, everything works great. The problem is when I try to watch them from AppleTV (2nd generation). Then, I get the error "There was a problem loading this content, please try again later".
I assume the problem is caused by either one of the two issues:
    1) The disk spins down after a while when not in use and/or
    2) The disk is not mounted in Finder all the time
When I play the video in iTunes, the disk spins up, is automatically mounted in Finder, and playback starts.
When I play the video in AppleTV, nothing happens and the error occurs.
But when I first play any videos in iTunes, and then play a video on AppleTV, it works.
So, is this a bug in Apple TV / iTunes Home Sharing? Should the video not get mounted automatically as well?
What's the workaround? Force the video to be mounted all the time? How do I do this? There's not such option in Airport Utilities.
    Thanks!

  • Cannot print from Time Capsule

I've had Time Capsule running for 4 years with no problems whatsover.  Yesterday, for some reason, TC stopped working.  I had to reset it.  Everything is back up and running on my network, except for one weird problem with my printer.  I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX580 printer plugged into the USB port on the Time Capsule.  Never had a problem with this printer since day one with TC.  Yesterday, when I reset TC and readded my printer driver to Print and Fax, it will not print using the driver I used before I reset the Time Capsule.  It will print using Gutenprint drivers (which I prefer not to use).  I want to use the Epson SP RX580 Series driver, but nothing happens when I send prints using that driver.  I see the printer icon in my dock, but when I open the icon there is no print queue.  I've deleted and added printer to no avail.
Can anyone help me figure this out?  I went on Epson website and downloaded the latest drivers for my printer, but still cannot print using RX580 drivers -- only Gutenprint.

4years is end of economic life of the Gen 1 TC.. it could actually have failed.
A few things to do.. reset to factory.. go back to 7.5.2 firmware in the TC.
If that fails then I would say the TC has become faulty.. it is simply time for a new one.
