Win 7 Security

I have a program that I have complied using LabWindows 2010.  Program works fine under Windows XP, but under WIndows 7 the program gets a shield attached to the icon (see attachment).  When running the program under Windows 7, it requests that an admin password be entered.
None of my other test programs have had this issue.
What is causing Window 7 to dislike this program.
Solved!

There are many forum posts on the internet about this issue.
Some claim they found a solution.
But my opinion is that, it is there for a reason (executable requires admin privilages) and I would not remove it unless I had a very good reason, other than you finding it annoying.

  • Win: Reduce Security Risks of running as Administrator

I didn't post this as "OT" since PE requires administrative rights. (At least PE3 on my machine.)
If, for convenience, you run most of the time with administrator's rights as I do you might want a relatively easy and free way to eliminate the very real risks of accessing the web and email giving potential new malware access to those same rights.
    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,64213-page,1-c,downloads/description.html#
I strongly recommend that you review and download from the link in the article highlighted in red ("Microsoft Security Developer Center page") rather than from the PC World direct link. If you follow the developer's instructions there it goes very smoothly.
I've been running IE and Outlook Express this way for about a week with no problems. To be reasonably sure that IE and OE can't easily get launched directly by other users I've removed them from the start menu.
    Bob

In the environment I have ...
    Firewall => OraAS (WebCache+ HTTP_Server+ BI + Forms + OC4J)
    => Firewall => Database
I install everything as oracle on both the servers (OraAS + Database). WebCache is set to port 80 as the default (which to me is an invitation to monkey around - but I could be wrong on that)
So what kind of threat is there and is there a script to test it out?

  • Cmd biee service windows left only one after win. cumulative security patch

Customer (3-5456748787) reported that the cmd obiee service windows left only one (instead of the usual two) after applying window cumulative security patches.
No change was made to the shortcut Start BI Services and they like to find out why they are getting one cmd window now.
Customer installed the 11115 environment using Simple Install option.
Everything else is working fine as normal. Any idea why and what caused the cmd window to disappear?
I can't find vcap image for 11115 Simple Install option. Anyone has one environment that I can verify this?
    Thanks
    Teik

    Hi Teik,
I could not check this as I do not have any environment at the moment, but I think this is due to the changes in the 11.1.1.5 installation modes.
If I am right, the "Start BI Services" through the windows start menu, starts the BI weblogic servers and then the opmn and the nqserver processes. In 11.1.1.5 Simple mode, there is only one weblogic server (Admin Server) and there is only one command window.
I am sorry if I got this wrong.
    Hope this helps.
    Thank you,
    Dhar

I was running Office in a 'RunVirtual' environment. This man explains it best
      http://ppe.blogs.technet.com/b/gladiatormsft/archive/2014/02/05/app-v-5-on-run-virtual-rds -run-virtual-virtualizable-ext…
Essentially Office and Acrobat are installed Natively however all Office Apps are configured to run in a Virtual environment so that Office Addins which are true AppV applications can be linked into Office.
My 'Empty' 'RunVirtual Office package did not have 'Com Integration' enabled
Adobe Acrobat makes use of a Com Addin for Office, so Office was unable to expose that to Adobe Acrobat until the 'Empty' 'RunVirtual Office package was updated accordingly

  • I downloaded the latest Firefox security update and my computer will no longer access the internet in any fashion, despite the fact that I'm still connected to the internet. Other browsers no longer work either.

Immediately after I downloaded the latest firefox security update my computer will no longer access the internet. I still have a fine wireless connection but Firefox, Internet Explorer, Itunes, and every other program will no longer access the internet, saying there is a connection error. I even tried restoring my system to a previous date but it said that a security program was preventing it from doing so.

What's the security program called? Is it '''Win 7 Security''' by any chance? There's a rogue AV app that will prevent internet access by that name. It comes in many different flavours, but it's basically the same product with different names depending on the operating system its aimed at. See screenshot.
Do you have another computer you can use to download Malwarebytes? Or can you get a friend to download it for you and copy it to a USB drive? Download from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
You can use the USB drive to transfer the program to your own PC and then install it.

  • Is it possible to integrate an existing, up to date, XP Pro OS on my computer into a new install of Win 7?

I read that Win 7 security support will last until 2020.
I am considering moving from Win XP Pro to Win 7 Pro with XP mode instead of Win 8.1, because the Win 7 upgrade adviser indicates no problems, whereas when I run
the Win 8 upgrade adviser there are a lot of incompatibilities.
Is there a way to take advantage of already having XP Pro installed and run it under Win 7 XP mode? Everything Win XP is there on the C: drive already,
so it seems a shame to have to install it again and apply all the updates. There is a lot of customization of Win XP that I want to retain, and it would be a major chore to redo it all.... if I could remember what I did. Am I misunderstanding the
process of getting from XP to Win 7 XP mode?
Is there any migration software that can integrate an existing Win XP OS with Win 7 XP mode for me?
I would be perfectly happy to keep running XP Pro past the security support termination date if it was safe to do so. I run ESET Smart Security, updated daily. Do you think ESET would provide the on going protection that Microsoft will no longer
    provide for Win XP?

    Hi,
We will need to move our files off of our PC before we install Windows 7. To make this easier, we recommend  a free download called Windows Easy Transfer, which will require an external hard disk.
Then install the Windows 7 like the below tutorial:
Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7#T1=tab01
After we've installed Windows 7, we could run Windows Easy Transfer again and move our files and settings back to our computer.
After that, we could install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7. Windows XP Mode works in two ways—both as a virtual operating system and as a way to open programs within Windows 7. It runs in a separate window on the Windows 7 desktop,
much like a program, except it's a fully-functional, fully-licensed version of Windows XP. In Windows XP Mode, we can access the physical computer's CD/DVD drive, install programs, save files, and perform other tasks as if we were
using a computer running Windows XP.
For detailed information, please refer to this article:
Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7

  • Acrobat 9 Pro form distribution problem (Enhanced Security?)

I am trying to distribute an Acrobat Pro form to several individuals who happen to be listed in my Outlook 2003 Address Book. When I type an email address into the "To" section of the form distribution pane, Acrobat automatically converts the email address to the recipient's name, which I can only assume is being accessed throughthe Outlook Address Book. Is there any way to isolate Acrobat Pro from my address book? Would changing the Acrobat preferences for "Security (Enhanced)" and un-checking "Automatically trust sites from my Win OS security zones" keep Acrobat from accessing my Outlook address book?

Is it tunred off for the Reader installation or in your Acrobat installation. It doesn't matter what your Acrobat settings are when it's used by someone else with Reader.
Recent versions of Acrobat/Reader do not cache form data in the way mentioned by GKaiseril. This used to happen when a form was viewed in a browser.

  • How to provide Security to Enterprise Archive

    Hi All,
I have a very queer requirement. Application security.
Question : "Can we provide security to .ear (J2EE enterprise archive) file so that no body can open it except say the SYSTEM ?".
The Need : Our's is a product based company, we give our application packaged as an EAR file to many clients and channel partners for demo, trial, production, etc. We don't want anybody to open the .ear and see the contents. Even thought we are doing obfuscation to prevent pilferage (and/or manipulation) of sensitive source code.
The EAR file locking is desired as another layer of security.
Any tips or resources on this will be welcome.
    Thanks.
    Madhu V

    Hi,
If you need to prevent your clients from viewing the contents of the EAR, you could make use of the WIN-ZIP security technique since the "EAR" also follows a "ZIP" format. You can thus effectively manage access-control to the zipped contents of your EAR file.
Furthermore, if you need to encrypt your java class files you could use obfuscators which are available on the NET both as freeware and buyables though its preferable if you could go in for the latter.
Hopefully this should resolve your problem !!!

  • Plug-in under Win 2K

I've read conflicting messages regarding the Java plug-in under Win 2K. Here is our situation:
    1) We currently use the 1.2.2 version of the plug-in. Everything works fine under Win NT.
    2) When installing the 1.2.2 plug-in under Win 2K (not logged in as an administrator, or with the proper privs), the plug-in would not install.
    3) When installing the 1.2.2 plug-in under Win 2K (logged in as an administrator), the plug-in installed successfully.
    Questions:
    1) Is this a known problem (to Sun) with the Java plug-in under Win 2K? If so, is there a solution other than upgrading to 1.3.x (if upgrading is indeed a solution)? We want to upgrade to 1.4 when it is ready.
    2) I'm guessing (I don't know anything about Win 2K) that "normal" users are not given authority to install the plug-in (or anything else) on their own machine? How do "normal" users install software?
    3) Is there a site (Microsoft or otherwise) that discusses Win 2K security/administrators?
    4) What other problems will I run into once I get the plug-in installed (as an administrator or otherwise) under Win 2K?
I know this has been talked about on several other threads... just trying to get a clear answer.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Van Williams

"Normal Users" don't install software on NT/2000. You need to have rights to do so such as being a member of the Administrators group.
After installation of the JRE/JDK from 1.2 to 1.3.1 I've not noticed any problems from Java or the plug-in.
There is this one really peculiar thing that we have happen on all of our machines that we install Java onto, reguardless of the machine, and consequently run Java apps on:
They work--no DLL Hell, and they keep on working after system updates, patches, and other application updates. Peculiar thing, but we love it!

  • How can I prevent rogue software from installing itself via Firefox on my system?

I don't know if this malware is exploiting a hole in Win7 or Firefox or both.
So bear with me in my description. I am trying to ascertain if there are Win 7 security settings or configuration changes I can make to eliminate this. Or are there Firefox configuration settings I can change to prevent this or both. Did not find any help articles that seemed to address this from the search arguments I thought to use.
In the last two weeks I have had two different "security product" windows activate on my Win7 Pro system. Somehow they prevented my starting anything else such as task manager. My AV application detected attempt to create outgoing internet connection in both instances. In either case I ceased using my system as soon as the malware Window activated. I was burned by a third party cookie exploit last year. If you clicked anything, you were toast, such as a "do you really want to navigate away from this page?" warnings. Didn't get one of these messages this time with either of these. But in both instances, registry entries were created for this malware and it installed itself in the following directory path, C:\users\{myID}\appdata\local\temp\ as dtjupjnml\lcuatursjmo.exe s well as registry entries under dtjupjnml and lcuatursjmo after searching with the regedit FIND feature. I didn't recall the names from the first instance, but it installed exactly the same way.
This did not come from an e-mail attachment or link. I don't do those.

Do a malware check with some malware scan programs.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.<br />

  • Problem with ADE, IE8 and Windows 7?

Encountering issues downloading ADE eBooks using IE8 in Windows 7?  Is this a known issue and are there any fixes?  Error states "Unable to Download. Unspecified Error."

That's one informative message from Windows, eh?
Some issues regarding Win 7 security have been discussed in the forum.  If
I remember correctly, at least one issue related to granting ADE permission
to pass through Win 7 security and then finding out that, at a lower level,
it was still blocked.  Try doing a search on the Forum and see if you can

  • Another BUG in Acrobat 9.4.5 -- Find doesn't work

I made the mistake of updating to the latest version Acrobat 9.4.5, and discovered that the Find feature doesn't work right.  For example, I enter a word to search in the "Find" box, and click return.  In past versions, the PDF would jump to the first instance of the term or phrase and highlight the word.  Now, the PDF jumps to the page, but doesn't highlight the word!  So... I'm stuck reading through text to find the word, which is a lot of extra work and time that I don't have. This is a critical problem because I search documents for terms all of the time in my job.
I've found one workaround that isn't very satisfactory, but it is better than nothing.  Instead of using "Find Next in PDF", I use "Open Full Acrobat Search" which is a command off the Find pull-down menu.  This command opens up a separate window, which is annoying because it disappears behind the document if you need to page through the PDF file. However, if I do the search, it shows all of the instances in a pane in the context of the sentence where it appears.  Then, if I click on the instance of the word in this pane twice (Yes, TWICE), it will highlight the word in the PDF. You cannot use the Find Next button as you could in previous versions, because this function will not highlight the word.  Anyway, given there are other bugs in this release that I've read about in this forum, I'll most likely just go back to the previous version and completely disable the automatic update feature in Acrobat.  I wish going back was a quick process, but I don't think it is.
I'm also going to tell everyone in my circle of friends to avoid automatically updating Adobe Acrobat in the future. Adobe obviously doesn't test the software well. Wish I could charge Adobe for the time and frustration they've caused me!

    Brianwrx,
The Acrobat 9.4.5 update bugs where the first "hit" on each page is not highlighted when doing a Find/Search and no longer being able to use Shift & Ctrl on the Pages pane thumbnails to multi-select and move/delete pages are well reported by many to have been introduced coincident with the Acrobat 9.4.5 release and not a MS Windows update.  I'm not sure what is going on with your 9.0.0 Pro Extended.
For seasoned Adobe to break such commonly used features in Acrobat 9, never have regression tested these basic functions given the 3 month (or longer) release cycle, and not have broke it in Acrobat X doesn't reflect well on their development/test process.  Then, there are web forum recommendations prodding to upgrade to Acrobat X -- which completely changed the User Interface and will result in significant loss of productivity while bridging the learning curve and dealing with new functional/compatibility problems.  Furthermore, it is something how OCR Suspects are never found/flagged in Acrobat 9, and then were finally fixed in Acrobat X (forcing the need for a paid upgrade to get a bug fix and have to relearn the interface to boot).
Adobe's poor quality 9.4.5 release update does me more harm than good when considering other settings to improve Acrobat security (turning off Java-Script, not automatically trusting sites from the Win OS security zones, and not allowing the opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications under the Edit menu - Preferences).  Adobe has made no official commitment to fix its bugs or provide a release date in the 10+ weeks since the awful 9.4.5 code was thrown over the fence to unsuspecting auto-update customers without any practical/simple way to back it off to 9.4.4 -- even though in all probability it will take the programmer one day each to fix the bugs with some additional time to test/release).  It is interesting that there have been no critical Acrobat security issues (as evidenced by no Out-Of-Cycle releases since 9.4.5), which should mean their programmers have more time to fix these bugs and restore stable functionality in 9.4.6.  As for "not being able to use Shift & Ctrl directly on the Pages pane thumbnails to move pages" (another 9.4.5 bug), the circumvention to drag a window around a group of pages, hold down Shift, and drag a window around a second group of pages should be further clarified with the following: Once your blue highlighted contiguous/non-contiguous pages selection is made, be sure to drag a thumbnail graphic directly to move the selection and don't try to drag the blue shaded perimeter area (which results in clearing the blue highlighting).  This does provide a decent circumvention for that bug -- as compared to the cumbersome "Full Acrobat Search - Advanced Search Options - double-clicking each Result line" circumvention for the Find/Search first "hit" non-highlighting bug.  I implore Adobe to listen to your customers and please take a "do no harm" conservative approach to updates/enhancements in the future.

  • PDF problems in Internet Explorer 11

We are testing upgrading to Internet Explorer 11 in my organization and we are encountering a problem with the Adobe PDF Plug-in. It doesn't work without disabling the plug-on and then enabling it. It will work after the disable/enable until users log off and back on. Is this a problem with the plug-in or Internet Explorer 11? Here is what I have done try and correct the issue:
    Repaired Adobe Reader
    Uninstall/Reinstall Adobe Reader
    Remove IE 11
    Reinstall IE 11
    Remove Adobe Reader
    Remove IE 11
    Install IE 11
    Install Adobe Reader
Here are the current settings in Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader and Adobe PDF Plug-in:
    OS: Window 7 Enterprise 32bit
    Browser: Internet Explorer 11
    Adobe PDF Plug-in: 11.0.10.32
Internet Explorer setting changes: Problem sites have been added to Trusted Sites list.
ActiveX Control settings in IE 11
Adobe Reader Enhanced Security Settings: Enable Protected Mode at startup: ON; Protected view: OFF; Enable Enhanced Security: ON; Automatically trust sites in my Win OS security zones: ON
    Adobe PDF plug-in Setting:

Can you post a screenshot of that Print panel: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1070933
It is possible that some system fonts (e.g. Segoe) are missing or corrupted.
Regarding IE freezing: try to disable Protected Mode in Adobe Reader [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Acrobat Pro X freezes up for 10-15 seconds shortly after opening PDF

I believe my issue may be the same as or similar to http://forums.adobe.com/thread/867133 , but I'm not able to post to that forum.
Running Acrobat 10.1.2 on a fully-patched Windows 7/64 Bit system (Office 2010/32 bit). Antivirus is eSet NOD32 4.0.437.0. I've been having this problem for several versions of Acrobat Pro.
Frequently, when I open a PDF, Acrobat shows the document and is responsive to user action (e.g. scrolling) for a few seconds, and then becomes completely unresponsive for 10-15 seconds, and then is usable again. This happens fairly consistently. Even if I already have Acrobat open, opening a new file causes the same behavior.
Many of the comments on this sort of problem suggest security settings might be an issue.I have tried disabling Enhanced security, disabling "automatically trust sites from my Win OS security zones", disabling "verify signatures when the document is opened", disabling "load security settings from a server", also done "clear remembered account information" for LiveCycle Rights Management. Further disabled everything in advanced settings under Windows Integration. None of these changes have any effect on my problem.
Any suggestions for how to troubleshoot?

None of the writable forums seemed on point for a bug report/discussion. The only place I saw a similar discussion was in the read-only Acrobat Windows forum. Where would you suggest moving this discussion?

  • Reader X doesn't display Pdf stream if response contains header "Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache"

    Hi all,
I work on a web application that, among others, generates Pdf documents. It renders them directly within the IE window by "streaming" the content of the Pdf in the response output stream. Note that we also add the header "Cache-Control", "no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate,post-check=0, pre-check=0" to the response.
Everything was fine with previous version of reader but since I installed Adobe reader X the content of the Pdf is not showing any more in my browser.
Here is what I already investigated:
    - if I use another machine with an "older" Reader version, it works. If I save the displayed Pdf and try to open it on the machine where X is installed  it works
    - if I remove the the Cache-Control header, then it works with reader X installation
Do you have any idea what changed between version 9 and X that could lead to this issue ?
To ease diagnostic I created a sandbox environment to reproduce the problem, you can go to the following address to see what's happening (or not in case you have version X installed)
    With the Cache-Control header: http://readerxissue.appspot.com
    Without the Cache-Control header: http://readerxissue.appspot.com/enableCache.html
I must confess that I am a bit stuck and I wonder if some of you could help.
    Thanks a lot

    Hello,
We have semiliar problems in sweden with Adobe Reader X 10.1 Swe and Internet Explorer 8.0 with streamed PDF files.
We had some issues and got them resolved by the following
Upgraded to Adobe Reader 10.1.2.45 Eng
    - Print Issue:http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-wont-print-reader-10.html
    - Grey box in Internet explorer: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-opens-grey-screen-browser.html
    - Add site as trusted: Edit-> Preferences, unbox Enable Enhanced Security + add the host/url to site that is whitelisted to send pdf files
(the Automaticly trust sites from mu Win OS security zones doesnt work for us)
The thing is we run MUI pack on our Citrix servers and want Adobe Reader in Swe but it havent been translated yet...
So we have to wait for the swedish release on Adobe Reader X 10.1.2
