Win 7 won't boot after installing R&R 4.3...urgent help needed!

Hi everyone,
I'd be really thankful if anyone could help me with this problem. I've got an R61i and I'm running Windows 7 Professional. Got all the latest drivers and I recently installed the new Lenovo Toolbox. After installing the toolbox it recommended that I install Rescue and Recovery 4.3, so I installed it. Then I did a backup on an external harddrive and protected it with a password. After all that was done I installed some new Windows Updates and restarted the Thinkpad for the first time after the backup. All of the sudden whenever Windows is booting it also loads R&R. I've tried different boot-up options with F12 on startup...nothing. I also tried to recover my last backup through R&R, but the password I entered to protect my backup won't work in R&R and so it freezes the app after 3 tries. I don't understand why R&R is loading in the first place...there's nothing wrong with my software. Can anyone please help? I urgently need my computer to finish off some uni work before tomorrow.
Regards,
 Pascal

Ok it seemed that my Windows partition was corrupted for some reason and since Lenovo hasn't come to publish a repair tool for Windows 7 yet I had no other choice than to boot from a Linux Live CD (Ubuntu). Backed up all my important files and then lay hands on the MBR myself...Anyways it worked so yeh, hope this helps anyone who's experienced the same problem until Lenovo makes that repair tool available

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Hi Neodoc,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that your MacBook Pro will not boot past the Apple logo. There may be a few troubleshooting steps I would recommend for this situation. The following article outlines the steps to perform to get this resolved for you.

  • My Mac Pro won't boot after installing the latest update

Im running the latest OSX on my mac and recenty did a small updated that i believe contain a few security thing and bug fixs but when restarting the machine after the update it would not boot again after the apple logo has appeard apple script is displayed on the screen contain what i think is boot script failing to run. I have been able to boot the system in safe mode. does anyone have and solution for this as i realy don't want to reinstall the OS
    Thanks

The most common cause for "Won't boot after software Update" is Directory Damage that existed before the Update, but was made worse by adding files during the Update.
The most common cure for that Directory Damage problem is to boot in Safe Mode, which takes five minutes to repair the disk, then comes up demanding your username and password, even if you normally auto-login.
Rarely, third-party add-ons are made obsolete by an update. In this case, booting in Safe Mode (with few Apple extensions and NO third-party extensions loaded) works fine, even if normal mode does not work.
Have you tried normal mode again after your Safe Boot?

  • Problem with HP Media Centre M7670.UK-a - won't boot after installing an update to Apple Quicktime

I just installed the latest update to Apple Quicktime (after an update message appeared on the screen). When asked if I wanted to re-boot the PC now, I clicked on Yes.
Now the computer won't boot. The power light comes on, then the disk drive light flashes for a moment, then nothing else happens and the PC starts to beep. The beeps are repeating, with 2 short beeps and one long beep. What do the beeps mean?

Then a  clear CMOS would be the next logical troubleshooting step.
Here is  a link to your motherboard specifications.
The information on clearing CMOS is at the bottom of the document.
This is usually the last step before giving up on a motherboard.
The problem you are facing is motherboard hardware firmware related.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro won't boot after installing 2nd DVD drive

    All,
I purchased a Pioneer DVR-117D from Mac Sales and after installing it in my new refurbished 2008 Mac Pro it won't boot. My MP will boot if I remove the drive. According to the Mac Sales website this drive should work fine in my MP. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I literally just got my MP today and installed the drive. Is it the drive or the Mac Pro. Thank you all.

The drive was set to master, I switched it to CS before I left for work but haven't tried reinstalling it. I will try when I get back and let you know if it worked. Thank you again.

  • Computer won't boot after installing MFP M127FW

My computer won't boot to my hard drive after installing my new MFP M127FW printer unless I first unplug the USB cable from the printer and then turn on the computer.  My BIOS is set to boot from my hard drive, not from a USB drive, so what did the installation of the MFP M127FW drivers and software do to my computer?  I assume this has something to do with the Smart Install feature.
    This question was solved.

    Hi @frcraig ,
I see that you are experiencing issues with the computer booting up when the printer is connected by the USB cable.
I would like to help you out with this issue today.
Most likely it is the Smart Install on the printer causing this. The printer looks like a disk drive.
On the printer, touch Setup, Service, Smart Install and turn it off.
If you are still having issues, in the system BIOS, disable the Boot from USB device option and the USB Legacy Support option. Doing this will allow the PC to complete the boot process to the internal hard drive and allow you to enter Windows. If this does not work for any reason, you should boot your PC before connecting the USB drive. Once the computer is fully booted into Windows, connect the USB drive and wait for the operating system to detect the drive.
Important: Do not disable the USB Legacy Support if you are using a USB Keyboard. Doing so will prevent you from being able to use the keyboard during the booting sequence.
What kind of computer do you have?
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a great day!
    Thank You.

  • Macbook won't boot after installing Security Update 2008-007 (Intel)

I installed security update 2008-007 (intel) on my MacBook last night using Software Update, but now my machine won't boot at all. All I get is the gray start-up screen with the dark gray apple, but there's no spinning progress bar or anything. After 5 minutes or so, the machine auto-restarts, but again hangs on the gray start-up screen. It does this over and over again until I shut it off. I tried to boot into safe mode by holding down shift right after the chime, but it still wouldn't boot (again, not even a spinning progress bar). Can anyone please help me? I really don't want to lose my photos/movies, etc. I'll backup everything promptly if I can just get it to boot. Thanks.

Hi jared-lee, and again, a warm welcome to the forums!
First for safety, "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

This may or may not fix the problem, but may.

  • Mac won't boot after installing Kaspersky antivirus demo

when i turn on, the macbook pro has apple logo with spining grey thing but then it goes to just apple logo like normal and then it just stays like that instead of going into desktop?

I'm not sure that anything but a clone or Time Machine backup will work with Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant. Boot from the Recovery partition and use the Restore tab in Disk Utility. Drag your startup drive from the left pane (the indented icon that has your internal drive name) to the Source window. Drag the destination drive (the indented icon) to the Destination window. If you are copying to a drive with one partition this process will erase the destination drive. If you are copying to a partition on a drive with multiple partitions it will erase the partition you choose as the destination.
After the copying process is complete you can try booting from the cloned drive. Restart and press the option key after the startup chime. Keep the option key pressed until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Select the clone and click on Return to select it. If it boots run the Kaspersky uninstaller. Then download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware) or SuperDuper! (free and paid versions). Use CCC or SuperDuper to copy the fixed clone back to your hard drive.
If the clone won't boot, and it probably won't, you will need to boot from the Recovery partition and choose to reinstall Lion. I haven't had to reinstall Lion or install it to an erased drive so if someone who has done so doesn't reply to this thread post a new question asking how to do it. It is my understanding that one is able to reinstall Lion over the existing installation or choose to erase the drive using Setup assistant to bring over your data from a clone. If you have to erase and install you will want to boot from the the Lion installation and clean off all the Kapersky stuff by searching for it (include invisible files in  your search). Then you can use Migration assistant to bring your data back from your clone.
There is also a possibility that you can remove the Kapersky stuff by booting in single user mode. One you have your data copied to a bootable clone you could post a question about how to go about finding and removing the files in single user mode.

  • New Windows Server 2012 install won't boot after installing Hyper-V role.

I have just installed Windows Server 2012 onto a Dell PowerEdge R310.  Everything worked okay until I installed the Hyper-V role.  After that, when it tries to boot, I get "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting
some error info, and then we'll restart for you. (0% complete)" for a split second, then the system reboots into Automatic Repair mode.
In Automatic Repair mode, my options are Refresh your system (which tells me the drive that Windows is on is locked), Reset your system (which tells me there is no partition), and Automatically Fix your PC (which tells me it can't fix it).
I have updated to the latest version of the BIOS (1.11.0, which Dell states adds Windows Server 2012 support).
I'm at a loss.. I've tried everything I can think of.  Has anyone run into this issue and figured out a solution?  The only references I can find to this issue talk about Gigabyte motherboards with USB 3.0, but this server pre-dates USB 3.0 by
    quite a bit.

    Hi,
Not only the BIOS but the iDRAC and storage part also need to ne up date check, have a look at the following list to see what you need for Server 2012:
    http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/os-applications/w/wiki/3868.dell-bios-support-for-windows-server-2012.aspx
If any info was collected during the error then have a look in the event viewer or look for a kernel/memory dump file so you can try to find the issue, in many cases a driver, anti-virus sofware or 3rd part service can cause these kind of issues.

    Hi,
Most PCI-E 3.0 cards are backwards compatible with PCI-E 2.0 slots.  However, in order to get PCI-E version 3 you need to be using an Ivy Bridge processor.  Review these specifications for a typical NVIDIA GTX 650.

  • Hd won't boot after installing solaris 10

I installed cd1 for Solaris 10 for x64/x86. Then I rebooted as I was instructed by the setup but the pc won't boot the hd. Am I doing something wrong? How can I boot my hd to solaris?

Having just installed Solaris 10 u1 on a system myself recently. This version now uses a different boot loader. So it may help others to know which version you are installing. (maybe it's opensolaris?)
Also, the drives on these systems are first partitioned using the DOS "fdisk" type partitioning. You basically create a SOLARIS2 type partition and build the "format slices" inside it. If this Solaris partition isn't marked as "active" in fdisk you will get no place fast. So check that first.
Usually the install does all this for you but depending on how you did the install it may not have.

  • [SOLVED] Arch won't boot after install - "GRUB" on black screen

I've installed arch on my 1000H from usb stick using zeneee kernel as described in wiki. Right after install everything was fine - wireless and ethernet were working normally, so i've done reboot.
Now it shows me black screen with "GRUB" text (sic! not "grub>", no error messages) on it. keyboard is not working.
I've tried reinstalling completely again - with full repartitioning of HDD and this time without installing eee kernel - just stock kernel26. Everithing went ok, i've checked grub settings and partitions - ok, but after reboot - again "GRUB" and non-working keyboard.
    I'm completely out of ideas.
EDIT: turns out i misplaced GRUB or something. reinstalled placing GRUB on /dev/sda. works fine now.

Have you moved everything from /var to /new_var (i named it for learning purpose)? You shoud copy content from /var but not on the fly but booting from arch iso cd, and than you shoud mount your / into arch-chroot environement, mount all of your mount points and than copy content from default /var to new /var. The copying should be done with this
    cp -rax
and you can add -v switch to verbose output. I have my own /var moved the same way.
    The simples way is:
    -boot the arch iso cd
-mount all of your mount point (i created here in this step /new_var to move /var to a new place, and this /new_var i put in /etc/fstab as /var later)
-copy /var to /new_var with -rax or -vrax (recursive, archive, this filesystem or verbose, recursive, archive, this filesystem switches)
    -umount all of it
    -reboot.

  • Laptop won't boot after installing iPod Shuffle

I got a new iPod Shuffle and I installed the software from the CD provided onto my laptop (Sony VAIO running Windows 2000). Now the PC won't boot at all, not even in safe mode.
The boot starts out ok, but hangs forever with the Windows 2000 splash screen showing and the progress bar for starting up displayed.
In safe mode, the last system driver loaded was mup.exe. I followed some suggestion found on other web sites but nothing seems to help.
What has the iPod shuffle software done to my lpatop? How do I get the laptop to boot?
I can boot from a floppy. I can run the recovery from the Windows 2000 CD, but still the laptop will not boot.
    Help!
    Thanks

As in 1st post, there is no last 'good' configuration as it is a fresh install of XP. Rolling back will just get back the default windows driver which cannot support the Nvidia NVS card. My goal is to successfully install the Lenovo Nvidia Quadro NVS 140m driver.
That said, could my problem lie with the XP version? The fresh install is XP SP0. If I update to SP3 do you think that will solve the problem (i.e. the graphics driver is written for later versions of XP)?
