Win 8.1 forcing switch to online account

Just installed 8.1. I'm using local accounts. I'm not a fan of my business files being uploaded to some SkyDrive location out of my control.
I went to the Windows Store just to look around. I went to install the first app I saw, Movie Moments or something like that. I suspect this behvior will be app-independent though. I was prompted for my "current" password, which
is my local account password. I provided it, then it prompted me to log in with my Microsoft account (online account). Did so, then went through this process of receivbing an email with a unique 1-time numerical code to enter into the app store
to validate yourself and install the app. All fine so far.
Then it gets to where it tells me it will "switch to a Microsoft account on this PC", which by the wording of the text on this screen sounds like it will permanently convert me away from using local accounts and instead to using the online Microsoft
account.
I could click Switch or Cancel. I clicked Cancel, thinking it would bypass this stupid screen and allow me to proceed, but no, it just closed the process off.
So what I've learned from this is that even to install an app that really has no need to be online (for tracking, usage analysis, all that stupid stuff they created online accounts for in the first place - see Big Data), and yet I appear to be forced.
Before I proceed I wanted to ask others if there is a way to avoid this. Perhaps to proceed with the switch, then convert back?
Also I'm curious if anybody else has a problem with the strategy Microsoft is employing to essentially push people into using their online account system?

Thanks for the replies all. Well almost all - colakid I really don't know what you're trying to say but I gather you think I'm some teenager whining. In fact I am an IT professional running a company that services 100% Microsoft customers,
and so my angst, while my own in this thread, is also something my customers will feel when they learn that we will have to completely re-vamp their IT management and data storage strategies and policies (for workgroup-based deployments) just to accomodate
Microsoft's need to push everybody to using their online stuff.
Not only is it bad enough that putting 8.1 on there makes these sudden changes, but also there's the concern that future updates will ":accidently" change some of these settings back. I've seen this typer of thing happen in the past, so it wouldn't
shock me to suddenly find that SkyDrive is now again the default save location after we set it elsewhere. Anyway, that's conjecture at this point.
So with all due respect, I may be among the first to complain but I am certain I won't be the last.
It also happens that I read IT security articles all the time, and often hear about breaches of these online data stores so my paranoia level is higher than the average citizen. And not to say I know hat Microsoft's intent is, but anybody at the top
tier of technologythese days is getting into big data, and there's no reason to think MS would not be among them.
Ok reall quick about some of the other replies:
Definitely this experience is not like iOS. Similar, but not the same. The entire PC and everything you do on it is subject to the mercy of your online account. And I haven't even looked into cached credentials and offline files in 8.1
but I wonder how that has been addressed?
Anyway, can't spend a lot more time on this subject today but definitely am not a fan of 8.1 at this stage for my own use, and will have to really evaluate the pros and cons before recommending it to any of my customers.
Curious: how does 8.1 Enterprise handle this subject?
Now on a positive note, one challenge for small business data storage is that without a server, a customer has no way to back up per-PC data so a SkyDriv eaccount per PC can be an idea. But then it is completely unmanagable from an IT perspective so
needless to say, IT people like me have to wonder.

How can you create an online account for a family plan of 3?

I recently switched from T-mobile to Verizon and got a family plan(10 GB More Everything Plan with Verizon Edge) for my parents and myself at the store. Unlike T-mobile where you can see activities of all 3 phones, the Verizon online account is only for 1 phone (or I am not doing it right ?!!! ).
And by looking at each individual account, it doesn't look like I have a family plan sharing 10 GB data ($80 montly account access fee + 3*$15/line monthly access fee=$125), but instead each phone has 10 GB ( $80 montly account access fee + $15/line monthly access fee=$95, which totals to $95*3=$285 for the family).
Is there a way I can check to see if I have a family plan? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If all 3 phones are on the same More Everything plan, the account owner only would be able to see the activity of all 3 lines. The other 2 lines would only be able to see the activity from their own line. Have you tried logging into the MyVerizon account from each line? Possibly the line you have been logging in with is not the account owner line.
Either calling CS as indicated above or stopping by a Verizon store would be able to remedy your situation if you are on separate accounts instead of just one.

Set up separate online account

I bought a phone under my daughter's account using her employee discount. She already has a phone, but I (we) would like to set up my phone on a different online account instead of being combined. She will be able to open a sub-level account under her name, so you and your husband can have a family share plan. Her mobile number will be on a separate account. She will need to contact Customer Care to transfer your number to a different account (under her name). After the change has been made, you can add the 2nd line to that account. Un-install using the developer’s instructions to make sure you remove all parts of the application. Some people recommend not installing an application unless you know how to remove it.
Cuda has caused some people problems. Try un-installing it and test.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Automatica Pages syncing to online accounts?

First of all, I have an iPad. Now, I think I remember reading somewhere that this was doable. Ideally, I would love to be able to sync my class notes that I work on in the Pages app to an online backup account such as Dropbox or Google documents via wi-fi, although, is Pages compatible with either of those, or any other app that would allow me to go to an online account to transfer files from my laptop to my iPad?
Theoretically, I want to be able to take notes in class, and then have it set up so that my notes are automatically uploaded to an online account, overwriting older versions of my lecture notes. This way I won't have to manually switch each individual document from Pages to iTunes and then into my "School" folder and back again if I wanted to, and I would be able to access these files from any computer. That's what my thought process is.
Is this possible?

I thing Evernote would meet your needs. I think DropBox would bee too complicated since it is harder to get non-photo files into DropBox. There is an app for EverNote for your iPad and a program to download/install for your computer.

Switching groups of accounts?

I use my MacBook Pro both at work and at home.
At work I use a number of accounts (one Exchange/IMAP and three IMAP) and at home a different set of accounts (five gmail).
Is there any way of switching groups of accounts online/offline?
I could then have Marco Polo switch my accounts online according to my location, rather than having to switch them "on" one by one.

Try adding a section in your script logic to change all existing January data to 0 before moving data from Dec to Jan.
Something like the following should adjust your existing January data to 0 before the December data is moved forward. I"ve shown it with a *GO statement as it generally performs better than multiple *COMMIT statements. However, you could use one commit for the "clear" logic and one for the move logic.

Problem with Switching Phones Online

I recently preordered a new iPhone 6. It arrived and I had activated it by calling customer service since there were issues activating it. I wanted to give the iPhone to a friend so I tried switching phones on the Verizon My Account page and it says for that line "Our records indicate you recently purchased a new device for this line of service but have not yet activated it". I called customer service to activate my old phone again but the message still appears.
Can somebody help me fix this issue? I can't switch phones online anymore and I want to be sure I get the $200 trade in deal for trading in my iPhone 4 after buying an iPhone 6.

How do I access and delete file from "Save to Your Online Account" area.

I just downloaded the trial version of Acrobat XI. I created a PDF file with sensitive information that I thought would be saved only to my computer but noticed that it was saved to my "online account."
I've searched and found how to reset that feature but I need to know how to access that Online Account and remove my file permanently from it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated (and necessary if I'm to purchase this tool).

That's what it looks like to me, too. It was only saved on my computer. The reason I thought it might be saved online somewhere is because, when I saved the file, there was a box checked that said "Save To Your Online Account." What does this mean then?
Also, when I open the Acrobat application, the file is listed there under Recent Files and it doesn't give me a way to clear the recent file list.
My goal is to make sure that my sensitive information is not being stored somewhere, anywhere online with Adobe or anyone else. The only place I want that file to appear is in the documents file of my computer.

Well, for the last week someones been putting my iPhone constantly in lost mode using my apple account and I keep getting out because I know my own password. I want to change the password but two other people I know use it, (who definetly wouldn't do this), someone else probably got ahold of the account and is spamming the phones into lost mode. I'm not in lost mode currently by the way. This repetition is really a hassle for me because I'm not always connected to the internet to get out of the lost mode, a few days ago, I went on a 12 hour flight and both my apple devices were probably put into the lost mode and I wasn't able to use my iPhone or iPad to do work and entertainment purposes. I was literally sitting there for 12 hours! So now that you sat through my problem, which I thank you for greatly, how do I switch apple/cloud accounts on my devices so this won't happen again? I hope you can give my solution, if there is one out there, and thank you in advance for atleast trying to solve my problem.

I suspect the salesperson that told you that meant your online account with your carrier...have you tried logging into your carrier account online? To do this will require the sim number on your sim card, as well as the phone's IMEI number...you get the sim number off the sim card & the IMEI number, for the phone, is printed on the box.

You might need to sign up at "https://cloud.acrobat.com/exportpdf" using your Adobe ID credentials to convert your PDF file to Word.
Do you get the 'download' prompt?
Also, you can find the converted files by clicking at the 'Files' tab.
Please try the same using a different browser and check.

If the videos are iPad compatible, you need to download them to computer then copy over to iTunes. After that connect iPad to iTunes with the video selected, click Sync button.

I am in dire need to update my two apps but the account is in his name. He did move departments so I can get ahold of him but it's a major hassle tracking him down everytime I need to update my programs.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to transfer purchases from one account to another. If you are going to 'take over' the existing account, you will need to contact your predecessor.
