(Win 8.1) **Windows asking for startup password

My mother (who is 82) has somehow locked up her computer so it asks for a start up password during boot up.  (Windows 8.1 OS)  I have tried to change the start up option to Safe Mode, attempted to do a system restore etc and it reads " You
need to sign in as an administrator to continue, but there aren't any administrator accounts on this PC" for every thing I attempt to do.
The laptop does not have a DVD drive.  (I do have a repair disc for 8.1 on a DVD for my laptop).  I am lost as to how to proceed to get this thing un bricked.  Please advise.

Hi  Peter,
If you couldn't remember the administrator account password and you don't have any other account in the system, you will have to re-install the system, because even the installation DVD as you said won't help recover  or reset the administrator's password.

Sorry you are having problems. First of all try Fifrefox's safemode.

If that works post back for further advice.
Next step, if safe mode did not work.
<u>First: Try a clean install, (you have had a none standard version installed previously)</u><br /> that involves deleting the program files. Then if necessary try troubleshooting by creating and using a clean empty Firefox profile.

    <u>Second: try a New Profile</u>
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager#Creating_a_new_profile
    * this will be an additional profile, it is still worth backing up any existing or currently working profile on a regular basis

    * Until you are absolutely confident about the repercussions I suggest
** always use an empty folder when creating a new profile
** never delete or rename profiles, just disable or remove shortcuts
** after creating a new test profile open it and check for any addons or plugins that may be have been included by default

  • A pop up window asking for my password?

Ever since I changed the admistrators password, this stupid window keeps popping up.
I've searched everywhere and it's driving me crazy LOL All I do is cancel it (hit the red circle)but it keeps coming back.
    any ideas?
It says that Safari is asking for the password...

This is in the Help section..and it isn't true. I never DID create a keychain password. And, it is NOT the same password as my login password. I've tried every password I've ever used, and NONE OF THEM WORK. This is really (oh, excuse me while I hit the cancel button twice) ARGH The only password I ever set was the adminstrator one. I used to set Screen Saver passwords on PC's with ease...the Mac password system is wayyy too complicated.
    ========================
You start with a single keychain, which is created automatically the first time you log in to your Mac OS X user account. Your default keychain has the same password as your login password. This keychain is unlocked automatically when you log in to Mac OS X and is referred to in Keychain Access menus as the "login" keychain.
You can create different keychains to store passwords for different purposes (for example, one for work and one for online shopping) or make a copy of a keychain so you can take it with you to other computers.
Keychains can be accessible to just a single user or sha

  • I had to remove and reistall Firefox after it would not open. When I try to install Windows asks for a password for me to download? How do I get around this?

I downloaded Axis from Yahoo. The next day Firefox would not open at all. I removed and tried to reinstall. Now whenever I try to reinstall Firefox, windows asks me to enter a password before I can install. How do I get around this?

Yes, sometimes the problem can happen before the window is able to show up.
As for the administrator password I'll double check if that's normal or also a symptom, but helping you with the password is not our area of expertise, you'd need to get support from Microsoft. Do you know if your account is admin or limited? You can try putting your credentials in.

  • Opening an email with a window asking for a password

I am in mac mail on my eMac trying to view an email from Realsimple.com that I viewed earlier today and I keep getting a request for "To view this page, you need to log in on area "Staging Area" on cp.realsimple.com. Your password will be sent in the clear." Then it asks for a name and password. I don't have an account with this website, but I have gotten daily emails from them for some time and have never gotten this prompt before. I can't get out of it to view any other emails either.

I have tried your suggestion too. I can not seem to get the program from stopping to bring up the password drop down window.
This window says: "To view this page, you need to log in to area “Staging Area” on cp.realsimple.com."
Concerning "preview" I don't know what that is - tried clicking on all corners but got no response because drop down window is locking out of "mail" program. The main screen has folders on left, unopened mail lists on top right and the highlighted mail in window frame below.
What actions are you suggesting that I take to get out of the locked program?

  • Can't connect to Internet - window asks for username/password

Turned on my iMac today, clicked on Safari and the window opened with address bar saying it was my home page (google). However, favicon is a D in a blue star with red star bursts. The window (not a popup) asks for my Internet Service Provider username and password in order to connect to the Internet. It even gives the correct tech phone # to my ISP and their logo. I did not enter my info but called the isp and they do not know what it is. The two other computers in my house, a PC connected via wire and an iBook G4 connected via AirPort, work fine.
The iMac will not go to any other address in Safari or Firefox, though it will display the address (w. D favicon) in the address bar. Mail will not download email messages from Gmail, either. It says the connection to the server timed out. iTunes can't access the Store and says make sure your network connection is active. Everything was fine when I shut the iMac down on Monday. :0(
Page Source info (in both Safari and Firefox) lists a Javascript with the e-mail [email protected] and Web site http://redrival.com/eak
What is wrong?? It is a virus or malware or something? HELP!
iMac 10.4.11 Safari 3.2.1 connected via AirPort
Thank you for any ideas... tech support at the ISP has never seen anything like this and was zero help.

That may, of course, be a totally different problem. You might have a look in System Preferences > Network. In the Advanced section, under Airport, you can deselect any networks listed there (as well as some other useful changes). It may be that it recognised that network and somehow joined.
I would not worry about viruses on Macs, at least not yet (the future, etc.), but there IS malware like Trojans, and it is possible for people to break into a computer with some help. Make sure the Firewall is on (Security preferences) and that your passwords are strong. A lot of people -- and I am one -- think it is better to work in a User account and leave the Admin account alone, except for maintenance and installing software. That gives a bit more protection as you cannot install stuff in the User account without the Admin password -- gives you a second or so to think, at least.

  • I need to reset my Apple ID on my ipad.  My internet provider was bought by another company, so my user name changed.  So now, when I go into itunes or the app store, I cannot update anything because it asks for my password, but not my apple id.

My internet provider changed, so my username changed.  I need to be able to reset my appleid NOT my password.  I can't find a way to do this.  Here is a scenario.  I want to go into the app store to update apps, so a box pops up asking for my password, but shows my appleid as the old name.  I have reset the appleid on my mac and itunes at home and works there, but when I try to go into things on the ipad, it automatically comes up with a window asking for my password, but for my old id name.  I went to the manage your id section, but it won't let me in because it wants the password to the old name.  So I think I need to reregister the ipad with my new userid.  Icloud, Itunes, app store, everything like that won't let me in because they still show the user id as the old name.

On the iPad - go to Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID. Tap on your old ID and sign out. Then sign in with your changed/new ID.

  • When I try to install softwear(new printer driver and "Flash Player" . The "Name" box says "apple". I'm asked for my password but it is always deemed wrong. Is this my Apple password, or a different one?

Normally you will be asked to confirm software installation and updates, which is what that window should be for. However, the "Name" is the "User" name as shown in System Preferences > Users & Groups. Is "apple" your User name? If not, try entering what your User name is and then the password that goes with it.

  • OSX asking for Airport password?

This a new one on me. MBP, G3 iMac and Pismo all use a 1st gen Airport Extreme connected to a Linksys Router. Bad connection with linksys; router setup pages not fully rendering. Switched over to ethernet cable; same situation. Reset firmware in Linksys; everything ok, or so I thought.
Pismo and iMac connecting to Airport Extreme without a problem. MBP keeps popping up a window that states: 'OSX requests a password'. Entering correct system password numerous times fails to turn on Airport in MBP. None of my machines have ever popped up that window asking for a password. Repaired Permissions, no change.
MBP connected by ethernet cable for the moment.

Went over to MBP/wireless dicussion. Reset PRAM and removed main battery for several minutes. Airport came on automatically as before - everything seems to be working correctly.

  • IPhone 6Plus on every reboot after putting in my password it opens to a small window asking for apple id password

everything works on phone and wow it's big compared to my iPhone 5s. went with space grey since i have had 3 white phones in a row. restored via iCloud backup. updated iTunes as i have about 3,000 songs. 250 bought the rest ripped to AAC from my cc's....what a pain but switched from my windows desktop to this new rMBP late 2013 for xmas and iTunes is slightly different on a mac than windows and where everything is stored on drive.
anyhow problem is every time i reboot after putting in my password and arriving at whatever page i left at i get a very small window asking for my Apple id password. Now the top half is pre filled in with the email address i use for iCloud/itunes/apple/etc.
i did see in settings there is a checkmark i cannot remove that says for apple password "ask immediately" there are no other choices. it can't be unchecked by any method i found.
    any help appreciated.

In case anyone else gets this I hit cancel once and it has never come back.

pop up window asks for password to access os x applications: how to bypass annoying signing in?

Mac OS X v10.6: Mail.app won’t open, or "You can't use this version of Mail…" alert after installing Security Update 2012-004:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4424?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
    Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:

  • Weird Pop-up window asking for password.

I have an iPhone 3gs (I know, I know...I'll upgrade soon!) and lately a window pops up (constantly) that asks for my password for a Yahoo account that I don't recognize...am I being "hacked"? - or at least is someone trying?
    Kind of freaking me out.

    Hi...here's what the pop-up says...
    Password Required
Enter the password for the CalDAV
    account "Yahoo!"
I have no idea what CalDav means...or what it's for....I have no association with CalDAV - I can't seem to get rid of it. I have looked under all my settings and can't find anything with this name....
