Win 8 boot error; Dual booting Arch/pre-installed Win8.1

Hello everyone! My name is kuhi and I have this problem that's driving me insane. I've tried all sorts of things... googling here and there, up and down.
The setup worked splendidly until one morning I turned my computer on, booting into the Windows Boot Manager from grub. Suddenly, out of the blue, I get this error:
Required device isn't connected... Error: 0xc0000225
Now none of the options in the recovery mode work... Refresh, reset, particular command prompt commands, you name it.
Another thing is, this error seems to have locked the windows partition itself, thus hinding it from itself, I guess. Now I can't even mount the drive on linux. It just tells me that I'm not authorized to do that. All I want right now is to access the filesystem and retrieve some of the personal files left in there, then It can all go to hell.
I don't know what to do. I've tried different BIOS and Boot options thinking it might work, but with no avail. I'm lost, is there anyone out there, who has ever met this kinda error? Or at least someone, who can point me in the right direction? I'll be happy to provide any information I can get.
Thanks in advance,
kuhi.

One more tool is testdisk to see if the partition table is sane.
YOU ARE AMAZING! Thanks a lot... it seems that after getting the packages you listed I am now able to mount and access the Windows8 partition. Doesnt neccessarily fix my issue, but at least I can retrieve lost filed. You are truly the saint
Edit: now i dont know how to open Docs & Settings as it seems to be an unsupported file, but ill try to figure that out
Edit2: hell its probably like password locked
Edit3: turns out its a broken symbolic link to /mnt/.NTFS-3G/C:/Users.. any way to fix this broken link

  • Help - How to install Win XP in dual boot with Win 7 (first installed)?

    Hi everybody!
I'm having some difficult in install a win xp in dual boot with win 7 (which came with the G550 notebook).
I modified the D: (Lenovo) partition to a primary partition to install the XP.  Also I installed the EasyBCD to manange the boots and both S.O. load fine.
The problem is that Win XP is seeing a partition (the first partition on disk) with 200MB that is hidden for Win 7 !   So this partition takes the C: letter in XP and mess all the configuration once that many programs uses the C: as a default letter.
The disk is divided in (aprox):
200 MB hidden partition (from factory)
    160GB with Win 7 installed
    40GB with Win XP installed
19GB hidden partition (Recovery - from factory)
Is anyone has some idea who to solve this problem or make install XP from the beginning without problems?
    Thank a lot!

first of all, i'm not sure windows xp works on your system.
secondly, you need to install previous operation system before. you can not install xp on windows 7 or vista.
if you do that, you may need to change boot volume or make changes on volumes. but one key recover will stop working.
    so, i suggest you not.

  • Win XP / 7 dual boot activation problem...

    Here's the scene:
1/ Have Xp installed and CS4 running fine... (used to have CS3 as well but there was a mobo problem and CS3 now gives an activation error message. Too much of a hassle to reformat and reinstall... yada, yada, yada.)
2/ Just installed Win 7 to test as a dual boot option and installed CS4 fresh. PS and AI both give me a "Licensing for the product has expired" message with no options. There are no other activations, meaning no alternative on another system or laptop, etc.
Is there a work around or do i have to do a completely fresh install? Meaning, deactivate CS4 in th XP boot and then reinstall CS4 in th Win 7 boot?
    TIA...

NB: FYI, have posted this in the Creative Suites (Win) forum as well...

    Hello @bigheadx,
I understand that your notebook computer takes a long time to reach the Windows log in screen after you power it on, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To ensure there are no background programs or services that are slowing the booting process of your operating system, I recommend following the steps in this document on Windows 8 Safe Mode. I also suggest following this resource on Resolving slow system performance (Windows 8) to increase the speed and efficiency of your operating system.

  • Win 32/64 dual boot

    Guys,
I have win 32 installed on my raid-o VIA  s-ata disks, runs not too bad
Now I want to install win 64 on my ATA Maxtor on IDE2, install runs fine, "F6-ing" the VIA drivers works too, after full installation the boot screen does NOT give any options and boots straight into win32
    What am I overlooking

    Hi Pim
Decide which disk you want to boot from, then boot from it, and go into Disk management ( my computer, right click, manage, disk management) both disks willbe there with partitions, note where the C: part is, then if you recognise which part the other OS is on, note drive No. and partitition.
From Desktop right click My comp, then properties, then Advanced, then the 3rd settings tab. at top there is the boot menu edit, click edit, brings up notepad with the boot file. Cut and paste another copy of the line with OS, then edit it with the drive No. and partition of second drive, change wording to suit.  then File, then Save as.., will show as boot, Save , overwrite. Reset. Change boot seq if necessary to boot from the right disk. That should bring up both OSs, try.
    Cheers

  • [Solved]Syslinux "booting... boot error" when booting Windows 7

Hello, I've set up my computer to dual boot windows and arch. Windows is on a separate hard drive and I was able to configure syslinux with a boot menu allowing me to select Windows at startup. For a long time this has worked without any problems whatsoever, but this morning I tried selecting windows and I got what is probably the most vague error message I have ever seen.
    "Booting...
    Boot Error"
According to this post this problem comes in when the ldsyslinux.sys file cannot be found. Unfortunately I was not able to use his suggested fix
    syslinux -U /dev/sdb1
I wasn't aware that there was a -U flag for syslinux and after checking it seems that there isn't one.

Sorry, I actually just fixed it on my own, it turns out my BIOS settings were a bit... weird. For some reason I didn't have my windows drive listed and it tried to boot a USB drive I had plugged into my computer. I just had to fix the drive order and it worked fine. Sorry about starting a fairly useless discussion.

  • Win 8 product key and a pre-installed Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13, how to get it?

    Hello
I live in Finland and I have read previously that these Windows 8 product keys are now linked somehow with motherboard´s BIOS systems, so we actually don´t need to know our product codes anymore.
Well, in some cases we do need to know them.
My Windows asked me once if I want to install a new version to get some new features, the same procedure can be launched by going to your Control panel, selecting System and selecting the top option where it says you could update to a new version to unlock new features.
This requires a 25-digit Windows 8 product key. Which we Yoga 13 owners do not have, as it is somewhere in the BIOS, hidden from us.
How can I give my product key to this field if I do not know it?
    1. Called to Microsoft
I tried contacting Microsoft Finland about this, but their automatic phone service stated it was none of their concern as it is a pre-installed system, and therefore I need to contact Lenovo straight. I tried to get a person to talk to, but I got none. Always an automatic service. I called to their switch (is this the right word?) to ask if I could get a person to talk to, but the number she forwarded me to always got to an automatic robot, again.
    2. Lenovo Customer support
Well, Lenovo directs customers to this forum from their customer service web page, so I hope some Lenovo employee can finally answer this question, please. I value customer service, and getting an answer from another forum using customer is not really customer service when they suggest using some 3rd party software to maybe get your windows 8 key with a method that may not be the most fancy way if asked from Microsoft. Lenovo Finland in Espoo (near Helsinki, contacts here: http://www.fonecta.fi/yritykset/Espoo/792365/Lenovo+Finland) has a phone number that hangs up every time you try to call it, I tried 4 times. This is getting awkward, you know.
    Thank you,
    - Tapio

When they ask for that key, they are expecting an upgrade key to something like Windows 8 Pro or addition of a Media Center Key. They don't expect you to use the same Key you are already using. It won't work.
Anyhow, take a look at this:

  • Win 7 (preloaded) and Win XP in dual boot. Who has it?

    Hi there!
I've got a G550 with Win 7 (factory installed) and I need to install Win XP as second S.O.
I tried some things but it's not working properly....
The disk is divided in (approx):
200 MB hidden partition (from factory)
    160GB with Win 7 installed
    40GB with Lenovo drivers
19GB hidden partition (Recovery - from factory)
Who already did this or has this configuration working?
    Need some tips, please...

  • Need help with Boot Camp dual booting

I'm trying to install windows 7 on a separate partition but after the mac book pro restarts to start the installation it says windows can't be installed because it needs to be NTFS format
but the mac partition is Mac OS Extended(journaled) but gives no option to format the other partition as NTFS
    what to do?

I assume you did not use Boot Camp Assistant to create the Windows partition? If you did and are in the Win 7 installer you should be looking at a display of all the partitions on your hard drive. Locate the partition you allocated for Boot Camp (you should know it by its size and/or it has the volume name of BOOT CAMP. Select the volume then click on the option to Format the volume from the group of options at the lower part of the display. If the option is not active then with the volume selected click on the Delete option. Refresh the display then reselect the now unallocated volume and click on the Format option.
If none of the above work then reboot. When you hear the chime hold down the C key and wait until the computer starts up from the Windows DVD. When you reach the same point as above locate and select the unallocated volume for Boot Camp. Click on that Format option.

  • Can i installed win xp sp3 os to a pre-installed win 7 hp laptop?

    Hi everyone
I want to replace my current factory installed win 7 home os to old version win xp sp3. how can i do that?

Support for Windows XP has ended. It is highly unlikely there are Windows XP hardware drivers available for your HP laptop. You need to stay with Windows

  • Dual boot ing pre-installed Windows 8 and windows 7?

    Hi there
I have a lenovo G505s that came with windows 8 and would like to download windows 7 and have them dual boot for gaming purposes so I was wondering I could get any advise on the matter.

    Welcome to the forum!
With Windows, generally you have to install the older version first then the newer with dual booting.  Since you already have Windows 8 installed that might be a problem.  Also resizing the partitions on your hard drive to make room will disable the option to use One Key Recovery at boot up.  If the machine is still under warranty, you might wait till the warranty expires before re-arranging things.  Also prior to installing Windows 7, make sure there are drivers available for your system's hardware.

  • Dual boot Windows 7 (64) and Arch Linux (64) problems

    Hello:
I am new to Arch Linux and just finished installing the 64bit on my laptop. It had a prebuilt Windows 7 (64) installed which I kept but split the hdd from 160Gb to 80Gb and 80Gb. I installed Arch there and set 4 partitions, all of them as Logical - a 64 MB ext2 /boot partition; a 512 MB swap partition; a 15 GB root partition; and the rest as my /home partition. My partitions look like this:
    Disk Drive: /dev/sda
    Size: 160041885696 bytes, 160.0 GB
Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 19457
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    sda1 Primary Unknown (27) 12889.02
    sda2 Boot Primary NTFS 106.93
    sda3 Primary NTFS [] 73915.11*
    sda5 Logical Linux ext2 65.81*
    sda6 Logical Linux 509.97*
    sda7 Logical Linux ext2 15002.92*
    sda8 Logical Linux ext2 57549.55*
The install was succesful(this was running from the core install cd) and I installed GRUB to my /boot but when I restarted it loaded Windows 7. I have used Knoppix USB disc to boot and see my Arch Linux install files and edited the /boot/gur/menu.lst file.
In Windows I installed EasyBCD 1.7.2 and tried to get NeoGrub bootloader working as a dual boot. I tried getting rid of the boot flag for Windows with cfdisk and setting it to my (Logical) sda5. That did not work. So far the only way I have booted into my Arch Linux install has been by going to the Live CD, choosing "Boot from Existing Linux Install" and editing the command files there.
    root (hd0,4)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
    initrd /kernel26.img
My goal is to get a dual boot working for Windows 7 and Arch Linux 64 and continue installing the Xorg and KDE to Arch. I just don't know what the problem is here. I don't mind reinstalling Arch if something went wrong, but I would like to keep my Windows running in order and add Arch on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I ran the LiveCD and chose "Install to MBR hd0". I ended up with this:
    setup hd(0,1)
    Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists.....yes
    Checking if "/boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5" exists.....yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 (hd0,1)".....failed(this is not fatal)
Running "embed /boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 (hd16)".....failed(this is not fatal)
    Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0,1) /boot/grub/stage2 p (hd0,1) boot/grub/menu.lst".....failed
Error 31: File is not sector aligned
My entry for Windows into the menu.lst looks like this:
    # (0) Arch Linux x64
    title Arch Linux x64
    root (hd0,4)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3841273c-d91e-41d6-9dbf-716a15d03a01 ro
