Win 8 on an external HD

I just installed Windows 8 on a LaCie SSD, following the instructions here: http://bleeptobleep.blogspot.fr/2013/02/mac-install-windows-7-or-8-on-external.h tml. All went well, and I can boot directly from the HD. However, Windows does not see any wireless network. When I click settings>networks, the icon for ethernet networks shows, but not the one for wireless. I spent four hours today talking to various MS techs, who were sympathetic and eliminated many possibilities before resulting to the tech support ploy of last result: blame it on some other product. They firs suggested that the issue was an outdated driver for my router, but couldn't explain why I couldn't see ANY wireless network, at starbucks or in my neighborhood. Therefore, they surmised, it was an outdated WLAN driver in my MacBook Pro.  I'm no network wiz, so I can't state with certainty this is bull, but I can't see how it could be so when I have no trouble when on OSX. Also never had any problem running Win7 in Fusion.
Any suggestions will be tried and appreciated.

Clay,
The short answer is that you are getting correct information from Microsoft's support technicians.  The longer explanatory answer follows:
The Windows Support Software, available as of this posting, does not include drivers intended for Windows 8.  No one on these forums can tell you when Apple will offer officially supported drivers for Windows 8: we are users of Apple products rather than representatives of Apple, Inc.  Apple generally does not make release timetables public knowledge until the release occurs.  Therefore, anything offered on these forums concerning the drivers will be mere surmise until the drivers are actually released by Apple (rumor is that this may occur with an Mac OS X update in the near future).  Until then, usability of a Boot Camp install of Windows 8 tends not to match that of Windows 7.  Also, VMWare Fusion is a virtual machine.  Usability of any operating system in a virtual machine seldom has anything to do with usability of the same operating system directly with the physical hardware (Windows 8 sitting atop VMWare Fusion sitting atop Mac OS X sitting atop hardware is different than Windows 8 sitting atop hardware).  Lastly, drivers written for Mac OS X are not written for Microsoft operating systems, Linux, or any other operating system than Mac OS X.  So, usability of hardware drivers in Mac OS X does not reflect on whether drivers exist for another operating system.  Frankly, the confusion here stems from Apple wearing the hardware manufacturer hat with regard to the various Mac computers they offer while wearing the operating system producer role with regard to the similarly named Mac OS X versions.  Apple primarily releases drivers for their hardware and their operating system.  They also, on occasion, add support for specific Windows versions with additional Windows specific drivers for the same hardware.  These updates are made to Boot Camp, which adds to the confusion as this is considered a part of Mac OS X.
Other than the driver question, I cannot remember whether official support exists for Boot Camp Windows installs to external disks.  The best place to look for this is on the support page for Boot Camp on Apple's site (I'm using my iPhone to post this and it has limits, otherwise I would have included a URL here).
While all of this may seem a bit rambling, I hope it helps clear up the main points asked about in the original post.  The only operatively helpful suggestion that can be made in this case is to routinely check for updates on Mac OS X until Boot Camp is updated for Windows 8.  If you decide to use Windows 8 in the meantime, please note that you are doing so at your own nonnegligible risk.

  • Easy way to install bootable OSX (or Win XP) on external drive in iMac?

HD in wife's 17" white iMac Core 2 went belly up. She exclusively uses Windows XP on the machine via Bootcamp.
Any want to do an install on 250G Western Digital USB HD so that she can run from that and just ignore the screwed up drive inside the iMac? If OSX than I'd want to install Bootcamp and Win XP on the external, too.
Or, if feasable, just install XP on the external HD and boot from there & again ignore the broken drive inside the iMac?
    Thanks.

You should have no issues booting from a Mac OS X install DVD and installing Mac OS X on an external HDD, USB or FireWire. The issue is going to be getting Windows on that drive. Boot Camp will only install a Windows partition on a Mac's internal drive, but not an ext drive.
    However, if anyone has figured out how to do this it would be the folks in the Boot Camp forums. The Forums are at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology. Here is a link;

  • Installing win XP on external esata drive failed

    Hello,
I have a problem with a lenovo T520. I installed win XP sp3 on its internal harddrive and it working fine. I have an external harddrive that I connect to the laptop via the eSata port. I want now to install additional win XP sp3 on the external drive to get a multiboot system.
But while setup, and after the first booting screen of windows, a blue screen of death appears with c0000218 unknown hardware error message.
I examined a little bit, and I saw that while win XP is booting it switch off the external harddrive (or reset the eSata port), and I think that what create the problem,
So is there a way to solve this problem.
    Thanks for any help!

I'm not sure if you can get it to boot normally out of the eSATA port. With XP on USB installs, you have to get it to load the USBSTOR driver early in boot.
You'd probably get better luck on the MSFN XP subforum with this question.

  • How to move Win 7 to external drive?

I rarely use Win 7 on my G575 4383. I use Linux on an external USB HDD. I would like to put the Win 7 on an external HDD or physically move the existing drive. (When I moved the existing HDD, Win 7 won't boot? It will only boot from the internal slot.) Then I could put Linux on the internal drive. (I don't want to dual boot them on the same drive.) How do I move Win 7?

  • Satellite A660 - Cannot install Win 7 using external DVD drive

    Hello!
Not so long time ago I asked for help with reinstalling win 7 on my laptop.
The only option was actually to order recovery dvd what I did. Today it arrived.
Problem is or was that some of CDs or DVDs couldn't be read for some reason.
Now it doesn't want to boot from cd it says drive failed.
So what I did I pluged my spare external DVD drive and it booted from that.
However just after few seconds it tells me to set "1st recovery media" and opens the disc in laptop. Tried to insert the disc - nothing, like its not inserted, tried to disable laptops cd - nothing please help

    > somehow it feels very strange that company like toshiba doesn't let people too recover it computers using external drives
Sorry kamil but this is not fully correct.
I can remember times when Toshiba released some notebook series without internal ODD (optical disk drive). It was able to recover such notebook using external ODD and recovery disk or recovery USB flash memory stick.
In your case the notebook boots up from the recovery disk because it appears a message saying please insert 1st recovery media and click continue. This means that data could be read from the recovery disk but obviously this is a wrong recovery disk or there is a problem with the inserted disk.
I found interesting document how to create a USB recovery media flash drive from recovery ISO images- or discs (DVDs)
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD4103KB0000R01.htm
But if the recovery dvd isnt OK, then this method will not function.
In such case you would need to use a Microsoft installation disk or you could order a new recovery disk from Arvato service.

  • Snow Leopard + Boot camp Win 7 + HFS External Drive

My OSX partition shows up fine in my Bootcamped Windows 7 x64, and I can read/write to it fine. My external, a Western Digital 1tb drive formated HFS+, is connected thru firewire, and it doesn't seem to mount or show up at all.
    Anyone else having this issue?

I can not get my Win 7 (32) os to see my Mac 10.6 partition. Is there something I need to set or turn on to get this to work?
As for your problem, perhaps Windows is not seeing the FireWire bus?

  • Possible to boot Win from an external drive?

I've recently replaced my original drive with both Mac OS X and a small partition for windows installed.
My windows partition is now on an external drive: the only difference is, i'ts now connected via USB instead of the internal SATA connector.
(I can still boot off of my old Mac OS X partition)
Is it possible to Boot from a bootcamp partition on an external drive?
if yes? Can I clone it to other drives?

    ok thanks man.
I'm now cloning that old partition to an external drive... guess I have to buy some old crappy pc system to acces some old programs.
I'm not doing the bootcamp partition anymore because someone advised me partitioning startup disks makes them slower. And I maybe use windows once every 6 months to find an old file.

  • LR Win to Mac - external HDDs formatted for NTFS not Mac, best solution?

Just moved from windows to Mac and moved the catalogue over. I save all my photos on two backup external HDDs to keep my computer empty but they are formatted for NTFS for Windows which a Mac does not support writing to. So while I can read the files from the catalogue on LR I can't move any new files to them.
Has anyone else found a workaround or do I need to reformat my HDDs for Mac format?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Using external editor by wine

I'd like to use my PictureWindowPro® as external editor in Aperture but it only runs by wine.
PWP® is windows only software with some unique and powerful tolls.
Does anybody know how to link a wine program as external editor?

    Workflow-
iPhoto 9.5.1 open in desktop 1
PSE 12 open in desktop 2
In iPhoto I select 4 photos, rt click on one of the photos, select edit external editor
Most of the time the photos open in desktop 2, but 10-20% of the time they will open in desktop 1. I then show all the desktops (F3) and drag the photos to desktop 2.
I can see there is going to be a lot of finger pointing (iPhoto vs OSX vs PSE) as to which piece of the operation is dropping the ball. iPhoto finds the 4 photos, opens them in PSE, but someone lost the desktop information. With that said, I think the iPhoto programers need to talk to the OSX programers to determine if the desktop information is being correctly passed. (I would guess that PSE assumes all PSE windows will be on the same desktop)
As an aside, I can perform most of my PSE operations in desktop 1 using keyboard shortcuts.

  • 10.9.2 install Bootcamp win7 64bit iMac mid 2010 no bootable device - external superdrive, USB Stick

    Hey all,
    big problem here.
Trying to install Bootcamp on my iMac 27" mid 2010.
The thing is, during the installation, i get the "no bootable device" black screen, and i think i know why... but i need help.
System, a mid 2010 imac, 2TB HD ( Original) and an SSD Samsung 1TB at the Optical Drive SATA connection.
2TB HD is empty atm. OSX Installed on the SSD.
    Bootcamp Assistant. Problem nr. 1.
He first did not want to let me create an USB drive. after hacking the assistat, deleting the "Pre" thing in the info.plist, that worked so far.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5479879?start=105&tstart=0 and several other postings got me so far.
Then when using the assistant, after choosing partition and so, when the iMac restarts, i get the "no bootable device" notice.
Read a lot, and it seems, that older iMacs, that originaly came with an internal superdrive only can install win 7 from that internal superdrive.
I have the problem, that i had it removed to put the SSD there.
So, when doing an EFI Boot, choosing the win USB Stick or the Win in my External Superdrive, - "no bootable...."
So i searched more. rEFIt should help. Installed, and all, doesnt work, same thing. As soon as i want to boot Win from the CD or Thumpdrive, doesnt work. :-(
In one of the many posts, someone wrote something about starting Shell in rEFIt first, etc... didnt work as well.
    then i found this post:
    http://www.andrewsavory.com/blog/2011/2156
sounded promissing. Somehow getting win installation files onto the Created Bootcamp partion with Virtual Mashine. But it didnt work for me.
The VW Fusion ware is different, and non of the steps he discribes works.
So how can i get it working.. it seems like it is somehow blocked to access something from the USB Ports.
Logicaly i would have to get the installation files onto a Internal drive. i Tried to create a partition and copy the Win 7 USB Thump using Disk Util Progeam onto a seperate, internal partition.. but he just does not what to do that... errormessages when trying to copy it, recreate the drive, etc.
So, i do have a 2TB internal HD, which i can use, an external superdrive, USB.Sticks. any gameplan?
And for Error-excluding: i have an original Win 7 64 bit CD, a burnd one and controled the Hash of the loaded ISO, which i downloaded for the USB-Stick.
    Any help? pls!!!

Hi Sam, the Mini Optical may draw too much USB power.
Can you restore that .iso to the Flash Drive as a CD/DVD instead of an image file?

  • Can I import images from DVD to my HDD through bridge (I have Win 7

    Hi,
I'm using Win 7 (and also have Bridge on Mac OS X). I'd like to import images from DVD to my HDD through Adobe Bridge. But I can't find the option to import from DVD in Bridge (either in Win 7 or Mac). My DVD drive on my Win machine is external while I have the regular internal DVD drive on my Macbook Pro. I'm trying to import images from DVD to HDD through Bridge. Go through the first round of select/reject through Bridge and then take them to LR for further edits.
I currently copy them from DVD drive to a USB pen drive. And then using the Bridge import dialog (when I plug in the USB again) copy them to my HDD. I do this becuase I also need to batch rename my files, add metadata and keywords during import. The simple copy/move function won't allow these additions and so I have to resort to this workaround of DVD to USB to HDD (thru Bridge). If I can import directly from DVD through bridge, it'll save me quite some time.
    Look forward to assistance pls.
    Thx,
    Chinmoy

I feel a bit silly now. For 2 days I struggled and then posted my Q.
After posting the Q, I figured it out in about 15 minutes.
    Insert DVD.
    Open Br
    Navigate to DVD
    Select all images
    Right Click - Batch Rename
Choose Destination Path and New file name.
    And go!
If you've had the same problem I did, hope this helps.

  • [solved]Wine font rendering + libmpg123 question

Not sure how to describe the problem, so please refer to screenshot below. I have the MS font package installed. I've modified the registry according to the wine wiki article. I tried symlinking my ttf fonts directory to the .wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts directory. I have even tried copying the entire ttf directly into the .wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts directory. I still cannot read anything. As you can see from the screenshot, the Tahoma font example shows up clearly, but nothing else is legible. What can I do to get to the bottom of this?
Additionally, I get this error when I invoke wine.
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"winemp3.acm": libmpg123.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Is this related to my issue? I thought libmpg123 only affected mp3 support. Is it necessary to have libmpg123? I assumed it wasn't since it's not in any of the repos.
Last edited by drtoki (2009-09-09 20:04:22)

i get the same 'winemp3' stuff.
Wine now uses external 'libmpg123' for mp3 decoding. (patent issues)
maybe the arch devs need to add '--without-libmpg123' in the build, to fix this.
    http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t … =libmpg123
    regarding the fonts, try;
    Installing 'ttf-ms-fonts' and 'ttf-tahoma'
    link the installed Truetype fonts to wine;
    # ln -s /usr/share/fonts/TTF /usr/share/wine/fonts
btw Wine is starting to use alot of external native nix packages now, which is a good thing. (i.e. ms fonts, decoders ect..)

  • How do I restore playlist without corrupting/dupping library?

I have a large music collection (50k+) titles which I gathered while deployed.  After several transfers/backups among external/internal harddrives, updates of iTunes and the use of Homesharing, the library became a mess of duplicates growing to over 100k titles.  Recently, after iTune updates most of those titles were "not found " when I'd open iTunes, utilize playlists or synch mobile devices.  Some of the duplications were in the orginal data, some incurred in utilizing 'Homesharing" across the family network of home computers (two Win machines, two external drives, multiple mobile devices) without realizing homesharing would duplicate in the library; and, at one point using "copy to iTunes media folder" so multiple duplicates of recent purchases/transfers were recorded.
So, this week I spent 3 days identifying the best original source folder for music files contained on an external harddrive and deleting all others., turned-off homeshare and pointed iTunes preferences>advanced>change to my best database (G:).  When I started iTunes, the library was much improved (50k), but I had no playlists.  Next, I erased 699 duplicate songs from same source albums resulting in the final, BEST LIBRARY was 50k titles, 10k duplicates across different albums.
But, all my PLAYLIST were missing. I had moved the original .itl and .xml over to my G: drive because I couldn't figure-out how pointing the Preference to G: but not having the library files would work.  Nothing.  So, at one point this morning,  the library was as pure as it had been in 4 years, but no playlists.  I read a few postings here and tried moving my .xml file back to \user\....\mymusic\iTunes folder and deleted .itl.   Upon restarting iTunes, I did get my Playlists back in the Sidebar, but only had a library of iCloud songs and purchases (400).  When I moved my previous .itl back from recycle and a smaller .xml which had been created in the user\iTunes folder back - the playlists remained, but I picked-up 20k duplicates, both all my duplicate song/albums were back and 20k extra bringing my music library to 70k.  I noticed Home Sharing had turned-on by itself and Preferences was pointed back to User\iTunes folder, not G: external.   Reversing these two, I still have 70k songs and 30k dups.
I'm just confounded by Apple's file/folder structure.  Feels like the .itl contains my "good" playlists, but "bad" library.  Can the two be managed separately?
I have used "consolidate" and "organize" commands.  I did not use "copy to iTunes media" as that was part of the previous issue creating an extra 250 GB.
    Windows 7 Premium, iTunes 11.1.126

If the media is in the standard iTunes folder structure or something similar then I have a script called FindTracks that can often repair things. For more details on how it works see this thread.
For duplicates I have another script called DeDuper that cleans up, while preserving playlist membership, highest rating and merging play counts. Please heed the warning to backup first and review this background thread on what it does.
See also this post on setting out your library to conform with the default layout, though in your case I'm suggesting the library belongs at G:\iTunes and the media inside G:\iTunes\iTunes Media.

  • S440 problem downgrading to Win7 - /boot/BCD error

    HI,
I´m trying to downgrade to Win 7 prof on a new S440.
I have downloaded Win7 Prof 64bit from MS site, disabled Secure Boot in the Bios, but when booting Win 7 on external DVD drive, it quickly ends in a black screen telling:
    Windows faild to start .....
    File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc0000000d
Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration.
Trying to boot from a DVD having a Win 7 Home 64 bit, which works on "normal machines", it simply freezews during loading Windows to RAM. This seems to have somwething to do with the new UEFI.
This is a show stopper, and cant uderstand why Lenovo do not provide a prober guide of how to down grade to Win 7.
Apåart from this, there is no serial number writte at the buttom of the machine, meaning, we have to call Microsoft and convince them to give ua a key for Wint 7 prof.

  • Running WINDOWS on my AirBook

I've gone to work with a government agency that uses WIN. It's a secure backbone. They want to give me an old IBM Workbook to use.
They probably will not let me use my AirBook unless I turn over access to them (they take control of Admin functions).
Can I have WIN loaded on a bootable HD (external drive LACIE) and then plug it in and boot up the government software, WIN, from the external drive?
That way, I could use my AirBook hardware for my work and still be able to run my AirBook using my Mac OS at home?
    Hopeful,
    PL

I think running a virtual machine is the way to go.  Oracle makes a great free one called Virtual Box.  My windows on my Macbook Pro actually runs faster than my windows laptop.  I acutally run multiple instances of windows on my mac.
