I hereby fall on my sword, but at least we can consider this solved.
I know that port 5353 has to be open for Airtunes, but I had Windows Firewall turned completely off and turned off my hardware firewall as well.
I then installed AOL's Port Magic (yuck) to monitor the ports being used by applications, and was shocked to see that iTunes was not getting its requested ports assigned upon startup, that they were being blocked somewhere.
It turns out I had a software firewall running in the background I didn't even know about! For my company I had installed a VPN client called AGNS (AT&T Global Network Services) and without asking it had also turned on its firewall feature. It was a simple matter to just turn it off.
All came back to life that was Apple-related.... the Airport admin utilities and finding the remote speakers in iTunes.
Yea!
I then turned my hardware firewall back on and it didn't interfere in any way (nothing fancy, just the built in features of my Linksys router).
I normally don't run the Windows Firewall, but I turned it on for grins and giggles and everything still worked with the Airport Express.
So.... my bad

  • Running .bat files as administrator on win 7 and win 2k8 machines

I have .bat which will be copied onto Win 7 and Win 2k8 machines remotely. The batch file contains scripts to stop and restart Windows services, like,
net stop "Adobe Acrobat Update Service".
Now when I run this batch file, I get "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied."
I understand that I need to run this batch file as administrator (here by administrator I mean, Windows default administrator.).
Does anyone have a solution for this?
P.S: 1) "run as" command inside the .bat file won't work, since you need to run the .bat file itself as administrator (here by administrator I mean, Windows default administrator.).
    2) I can create another batch file (say b.bat) containing the "run as" command and invoking the the original batch file (say a.bat), which has the command net stop "Adobe Acrobat Update Service". But still, this won't solve the issue, since you can run as,
the user, who has administrator privileges and not run as administrator (here by administrator I mean, Windows default administrator.) itself.

    Suhas,
Can you explain me why you want to do this?
Maby there are there some beter ways to achive your goal.
The reason why this doesn't work is UAC who strips the administrator tokens from your user account.
So it is not nesseary to use the default windows administrator account. Just a user with administrative priviliges will do you only need to run this command elevated.
There are several ways to run this command elevated:
Just right click on the batch file and choose the option run as administator.
Quite simple but a no go if you wanna have a fully automated solution
Use PsExec.exe  from the pstools suite (avaible
    here)
If you use the command like this:
    PSEXEC -u domain\user -p password -h net stop spooler
    PSEXEC -u domain\user -p password -h net start spooler
Or from a remote machine (pcX = remote management machine, pcY = machine where you want to restart the service.)
Execute this command on machine pcX:
    PSEXEC \\pcY -u domain\user -p password -h net stop spooler
    PSEXEC \\pcY -u domain\user -p password -h net start spooler
Create a sheduled task with the "highest privlilges" that executes your batch file.
    etc ...
    Kind Regards

  • Shared folder in win 8 isn't accessible from win xp and win 7

I have shared my drives in win 8.1. Everything was ok i was accessing my drives form everywhere easily then i installed
eset smart security because of it my sharing was blocked because firewall was managed by eset and i was unable to configure its firewall so i uninstalled eset after that my drives were accessible from win 8 and mac os but i cannot access my drives from all
win 7 and win xp systems but some of them can access those drives..

    Hi,
This problem probably caused by ESET, please check its installation folder and delete them completely. Also search Registry and delete all ESET items for test.
    If problem persists, please use
autoruns to check Windows startup driver and application, then delete ESET related items.

    Good day, gents.
Yesterday I installed 4 beta on my desktop after succesfull using it on laptop. But when i opened google (and some other sites) i found that fonts are looking different with the same settings. Here screens:

http://i56.tinypic.com/5nw47l.jpg - Desktop, Win 7 Ultimate (Looks terrible, those Times New Roman makes me mad)
I tried reinstall, clearing cashe. In Firefox 3.6.9 on Desktop fonts was normal.
How to resolve this ? Thanks and sorry for my English.

  • EA3500 - Windows was unable to connect... (Win 7 and Win 8.1 have done this off and on)...

I recently purchased a Linksys EA3500 router and am using it as the sole router in my home network.  I have primarily had three devices connected to the network computers/tablets -  two running Win7 and one running Win8.1.
The first few days were OK but then the Win 8.1 system would not connect to the network (see the error message below).  "Windows was unable to connect..."  I tried the problem troubleshooter, power cyclilng the comptuer, power cycling the router.  Updating the router firmware to the latest (it added a .1 at the end).  Uninstalling and reinstalling wireless drivers on the computer.  I've reset the router to factory defaults.  I've run the router with and without wifi passwords.
This morning I was able to connect the Win 8.1 system to the network.  Not sure what changed overnight.  However, today I have had two instances of a different computer, one of the Win 7 systems, suffering the same problem.  Different hardware.  The Win 8.1 system is an Asus T100 tablet/netbook using a Broadcom 802.11abgn Wireless SDIO Adapter.  The Win 7 system is a Dell E6540 laptop using a Dell Wireless  1506 802.11b/g/n 2.4 GHz adapter manufactured by Atheros Communications, Inc.
Last night, when I was having problems with the Win 8.1 system, I should note that it worked fine with the 5 GHz network.  The laptop, however, does not support 5 GHz and now that it's suffering the same problem my only work-around is a cellular hotspot.
I'm suspecting the router at this point.  Has anyone else seen this?  Any ideas what could be causing it, what I could do to fix it or what I might do to help diagnose the problem(s) ?  I'm more than willing to run third-party software to analyze and better understand what is happening on a network level (I would actually like to understand as much as anyone is willing to get me started on).
If I am unable to determine why certain systems almost seem to become "banned" from my network while others are working just fine then I'm going to have to return this device and try something else.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi @daved31,
You are on the right track. Checking the Wireless MAC Filter is one of the troubleshooting steps. For 2.4 GHz frequency, the suggested channels are 1, 3, 6, 9 and 11. For the 5 GHz, I suggest to use the highest channel. Those channels will give you a better signal, just make sure that no other wireless device is using it to avoid wireless interference.
If only one wireless device is not connecting wirelessly, we should focus on the wireless device itself because we know that the router/access point is working since the other wireless devices are working wirelessly.
I suggest to delete preferred networks on the laptop. Here's the link that may help: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/GetArticle.aspx?docid=85537a14b0214be48217c733bba9ac65_Removing_Wirele...

  • Cant print from Win XP and Win 7 machines using Airport Express

I have two airport expresses each hooked to a printer. Both are ini ethernet mode only; wireless is turned off. With our two Macbooks, all works perfectly; it was foolproof to set-up and both macbooks can priunt to either printer at will.
We have a Win 7 laptop; oddly, it will only print to one of the two printers
We have a Win XP desktop, it wont print to either printer.
In boht cases on the windows machines, I can see the airport expresses and I can configure3 them using the utilty. I can install the printers using the Bonjour Printer Wizard. Bonjour itself is running on each machine....I can tell as itunes home sharing works perfectly and I can see it as a "Service".
But when I try to print a document, it just never comes out!
I have Geek Squad coming next week....by nice if I could fix it before they get here!

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the  AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at thisiFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link. If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help: Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if your printer is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

  • Cannot wire network hp CP1025nw color between Win xp and Win 7

    I have two machines.
    A:  Win XP 32 bit
    B:  Win 7 64 bit
I have an hp LaserJet cp1025nw color printer.
PCs are connected to an ethernet switch which is connected to the internet.
Printer is connected via USB cable.
I can install the software successfully on either computer using the installation cd, and the printer works fine for that PC, but it will NOT share between the two.  Interestingly, it WILL print a TEST PAGE from the networked PC, but it will not print from notepad, word, or publisher nor will it print bitmaps from Paint or any other file.  The print job DOES go to the queue, sits there for a few minutes, then just disappears.  No errors occur.  When attempted to choose "networked connection (wired)" from the installation CD, it asks for an ip, which is NOT the situation; I don't want to set up a "network" printer I want to set up a printer that is "networked" but directly plugged into machine B.  Interestingly, I have a second printer, a Brother, which is set up in the exact same way but DOES print from all the mentioned programs using the SAME network switch and outlets, etc. so I KNOW the cables are not faulty or incorrectly connected.  The problem is the Brother printer is a black and white laser, so I cannot print color jobs on it and hence I need the HP to work in the same fashion.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
I think you need to make the PC which connected to the printer using USB cable as a Print server.
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to connect Win 7 and Win XP PCs in a Workgroup

I am trying to connect new (newer) Win 7 Pro PCs to a Workgroup of all Win XP Pro PCs.
The Win 7 PCs can see each other and the Router. The XP PCs can see each other.
The Win 7 PCs are 64 Bit. They are on a separate subnet (192.168.2.xxx) from the XP PCs (192.168.1.xxxx)
    I have two issues:
The Win 7 PCs can "see" an individual XP PC if I type the name (\\name) in the URL or search field but the connection is lost as soon as I close Explorer. I can ping all of the XP PCs from Win 7 PCs.
The XP PCs cannot see any Win 7 PCs and cannot ping them.
The Workgroup name (in one place but not under network - see below) is the same for all PCs.
I turned off the Firewall for a Win 7 PC but that did not help.
I tried to change the Workgroup in a XP PC (My Computer>Properties>Network ID): changed to "My company uses a network without a domain" and changed the Workgroup name but the changes do not stick. They go back to the original settings after
I reboot. Tried multiple times with same result.

    Hi,
Multi-subnet TCP/IP network browsing support is available only in a domain environment. Segmented workgroups simply can't be browsed across segment boundaries.
Just bring the machines into same subnet.

  • Tecra A11 - Win XP and Win 98 multiboot

    Hi,
    I would like do a multiboot XP / 98 on a TECRA A11.
    Do you think it's possible.
Will I have some drivers dysfonction?
    Thanks for answer !!

Well, Win XP installation should not be a big problem because the Win XP drivers seem to be available on Toshiba European driver page.
But Win 98 might be a problem here since its not supported and the drivers are not available you will need to search for such drivers at your hand and I think this might be a painful time I doubt you will be able to get Win 98 drivers because this OS is really, really old.
I would recommend installing the Win 98 only using Virtual Machine (VM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine
    or Virtual PC
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Virtual_PC
This is very easy running Win XP you can open virtual PC or VM and could start the Win 98

    Then browse to Software->Microsoft->Internet Explorer->Main->FeatureControl->Feature_Restrict_File_Download
And then set the Value iexplore.exe to 0. If it doesn't exist: Create it (DWORD).

  • Firmware question for Color LaserJet: Two computers on my network, Win XP and Win 7. Does it matter?

I don't understand firmware, but I know I needed to update my CP2025dn printer's firmware.  I used my older computer to do this.  If I had used my newer computer with Windows 7, would this affect my printing from either computer?  Thanks.

I have tried to install my HP color laserjet 2605 dn on my windows 7 operating system and I get an administrator error

  • Using one partition for Linux-, Win.-Swap and Win-Tmp atst?

I think I will keep Windows for the first time I'm going to install Arch. I'm looking for a way to set up one single Partition for usage as Swap or /var/tmp under Linux and at the same time as "rather regular" partition (intended to be one to hold the Windows-Swapfile plus the Windows-TMP-Folder) under Windows.
As regards the usage of the partition as /var/tmp under Linux: I don't explicitly wish to retain data which has been dropped in /var/tmp, therefore I don't care whether it gets lost when booting to another OS. Vice versa: There are absolutly no needs to preserve data which has been stored under %TMP% in Windows. Hence, I wouldn't care if those get lost owing to a change from NTFS to ext3.
Can you think of any way to achive something at least similar?

    hmmm. Long time. no reply.
Disclaimer: I have no real idea how Linux and Windows swap works, not in any detail anyway.  This idea is to be used at your own risk, and after making appropriate backups.
Linux uses a partition type swp by default for swap partitions, changing this to NTFS for windows would be a pain, as you would have to reformat at every boot.
It is possible to use a swap file instead under linux, by mounting a file as swap,  I've seen it for Red Hat. It may be less efficient than a swap partition though.
If you did this, on an ext3 partition, and installed the IFS drivers under windows I guess you could then use this partition all the time.  You might then need a script to create & delete the swap files needed by each operating system, which would have to be executed by the operating system on boot before mounting the swap.
I can see this falling flat if the IFS drivers don't come up under windows before it tries to mount it's swap file, or if it doesn't like swapping to ext3, or a host of other reasons. The only way to find out is probably to try it... Have fun!

  • Win 32 and win 64 bit, tried to download itunes and nothing happens

I am massively frustrated. I have tried to download the new version of iTunes about 20 times. When I download 32 bit ( I have win7) it says I need to download the 64 bit! When I download the 64 bit, it says it not compatible. I have completely uninstalled the previous versions as per your support pages and removed temp files. Now I have no iTunes, I cannot download it and I have a new iPod shuffle which I cannot use. When I had iTunes 9, it could not find it anyway.
So what the HECK will I do now? Nothing works and whenever I try to download iTunes, it crashes half way anyway.

I use mobile broadband, that I get credit of data per month. It connects through a dongle with a mobile phone SIM card.
Ahhhhhh ... you might be getting "the Australian problem". Downloads do seem to get damaged reasonably often going through those (and for some as-yet-unknown-reason, it seems to be unusually common in Australia by comparison with other countries).
Okay ... generally if we can get an undamaged installer onto the PC, it will install okay. So, try downloading an installer on a different PC. Copy it to a memory stick, flash drive, thumb drive or other external hard drive (or perhaps even burn it to a CD-R). Carry it back to your PC, copy it to your hard drive and doubleclick the installer to start the install.
Does that one go through okay, demodia?
