Win XP on Solaris 10

How can I install Win XP as an application on Solaris 10 so that Win XP works as usual.

On Solaris 10 x86, using the QEMU CPU Emulator, it might work.

  • DataSource error on Win but not Solaris

I am running Sun 1 Studio 4 CE on Windows. I get this error when compiling a class.
C:/Program Files/s1studio/ce/lib/ext/jdbc20x.zip(javax/sql/DataSource.java) [32:1] class DataSource is public, should be declared in a file named DataSource.java
    (source unavailable)
    1 error
    Errors compiling Suggestion.
The DataSource file is in jdbc20x.zip. I tried to remove it and put it in the directory, but it still doesn't work. I can compile this class using javac and it works on Sun 1 Studio 4 CE on Solaris.
    Any ideas
    Mike

The Problem could be the fact that you have a space in the Path to the jdbc20x.zip. i.e, the directory "Program files". try copying it to another directory and mount that and try again.
In general its better to have your user directory path without spaces in directory names.
    Hope it helps

  • Solaris 7 Software Installation on x86 System Problem

Experienced error message "disk not found" just prior to Solaris execution of final installation process. This was during Interactive installation. Also recieved "cannot determine boot device name". Could not use set env command in order to set the boot device. It is telling us that there is no boot device set up. Need some information/commands that will enable me to get over this problem and complete the software installation.
This could very well be a simple fix, I just don't have the knowledge bas eto effect it. Please contact at [email protected] or 540 657-6585.
    Thanks
    Ken

I hope this can help you. I recently posted the similar question on the development group and got help from 'agood214' which I think is the best answer.
(All credit should be to agood214)
Okay, here's the followup and results for my install method.
    1. It worked
    2. Partition magic and Boot magic are not needed to make this happen.
    3. Partition and boot magic do not recognize the solaris partitions on the second master IDE. In fact they give an error ( #110) and offer to "fix" the dirve which will corrupt the install of Solaris.
    4. I had scanned the newsgroups and found a utiliuty called XOSL - Extended Operating System Loader at http://www.xosl.org it works like and absolute charm!
=== Other installation notes - mostly my machine is not on the Hardware Comaptibility List but I figured I'd give it a try. System is a K6-III 450 Mhz ( not on HCL) Iwill XA-100A Plus motherboard ( not on HCL ) Sblive PCI valueboard ( not on HCL ) Siig high speed serial board - PCI (not on HCL) Diamond 56k PCI modem ( not on HCL ) I had to remove the modem and serial card as well as dispable PnP in the BIOS.
    Then everything loaded pretty normal.
    ====
agood214 was using two physical drivers, but I tried on one 13 GB Hard Drive with 4 partitions (Solaris7, Win98, Win2000, data-partition) and working beautifully. In my case, I didn't have to disable anything in the BIOS to get them work. Just read though the manual in XOSL if you want to use this boot-loader and it is very easy to install. NOTE: you can not use 'instant boot' in XOSL to boot with the combination of WIN-OS and Solaris. Besides it, everything is prefect.

  • Solaris 10 installation - questions

    Hello,
I'm going to install Solaris 06/06 on my PC. I have some questions about the installation and steps before the installation itself.
First of all, summarize of what I have:
PC checked by device detection tool and all necessary drivers that are not shipped with Solaris
160 GB hard disk - 100GB of NTFS partition with Windows XP, 60GB of "untouched" space - no filesystem, no created partition (is it ok this way? or rather create partition with raw data?)
I've read many discussion boards and web pages related to topic of coexistence of win XP and Solaris on one disk. It seems that XP and Solaris can work on one hard disk without problems.
However, I must admit little fears of possible problems - i.e. threat of corrupting of the access to ntfs partition or the ntfs partition itself. I'll backup all important data, that's without question, however losting of that partition would be very annoying. I have no possibility to make exact disk image.
I've noticed on the forums that grub, a solaris boot loader, sometimes doesn't include win xp partition in its menu. It could be added there, however I've noticed too that some people had big problems with this as they were unable to boot win xp from grup even though they added windows item to grup. This is the thing I fear most - I think that the correct setting during installation cannot corrupt other (in my case Win XP) partition but by installing grub, there is (according the posts on message boards) the chance of possible problems of cutting out Win XP from booting.
Could this be prevented or repaired by the backup of master boot record and in case the problems with booting will occur replace MBR modified by Solaris installation by the backup to back to the state when XP is booting automatically? If so, could you recommend any tool for MBR backup?
Thanks for any comments or advices.

    Hello!
First of all,i don`t know any tool that u could use to make a backup of your MBR.
Anyway, dual booting is a problem that i have had in the past. In my opinion, Solaris and Windows will never run without problems (from the Windows point of view). I have tryied many versions of Unix/Linux toghether with Win XP (on the same system);there`s always some kind of problems...sooner or later.
Last week i have installed Solaris 10 toghether with Win XP on a PIII Compaq Deskpro. No problem at the begining. After 1 day, the WIn OS crashed (the PC blocks when i start WinXP).
So, in my opinion, if u want to have a fully functional Solaris system, install it on a separate PC,even if it`s an older one (for example, i have Solaris installed on a PIII/500 MHz/512 RAM bought with 50 euro - depends what u want to do with your Solaris system).
    Good luck!
    Best regards,
    N.

  • Solaris 10 on extended partition?

    Hey all
I need your help in something, as I'm a Linux junkie but a Solaris noob. I'm currently working with an 80 GB hard drive with Windows XP (ugh) installed on the primary partition and Linux (Fedora Core 4) on extended partitions. Needless to say I'm using the Linux bootloader.
I'm downloading Solaris 10 at the moment. I read somewhere that you can't install Solaris 10 on an extended partition. Is that so? Because I was originally considering installing Solaris in Linux's place (not that I'm sick of Linux, but because of a lack of free space on my drive).
If I have to install it on the primary partition, that means I have to get rid of Windows instead. Is that a risky thing to do? Because I can't afford losing the important data I have, which is all on extended partitions. And will there be any issues concerning booting Linux and Solaris?
I also have this old 10GB hard drive lying around somewhere that doesn't work. Would it be the best idea to have it repaired and installing Solaris on it and keep the old systems?
    Please help me out
    Thanks in advance

    -AHi,
I've just got this working fairly well, Windows XP Pro-
    50gb, FC4-10gb, Solaris 10-9gb, and Fat32- 7gb.
That is the correct order to install them. Originally, I
was going to use BootMagic as the boot loader. So
I installed FC4 to the first sector of the boot partition.
That works well for Linux and Win XP but Solaris 10
    required the "Advanced" BootMagic configuration.
Then I decided to try to make this work with boot.ini
I used the dd command to copy the first 512 bits of
the first sector of the Linux boot partition, linux.bin.
Here is my boot.ini and linux.bin is on C:\
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    c:\linux.bin="Linux"
So when I choose "Linux from the boot.ini options, the
grub boot loader presents me with Windows as the
default, or I can choose FC4 or Solaris 10. I read that
Solaris 10 requires the "makeactive" switch and I
included it for Windows XP so that I wouldn't have to
make Win XP active since I use it the most; it saves
the Solaris 10 boot loader screen most of the time.

SH: I think you could use Mepis as a much smaller
Linux that would provide the grub boot loader -- Boot
Magic is 13mb and costs money. Also remember to
conserve on separate primary boot partitions since
you only have 4. Solaris 10 cannot be installed in an
extended partition nor does trying to make it boot
directly out of boot.ini work, but indirectly thru grub.
I used Partition Magic at first but it gets hosed after
the Solaris 10 install and it is a bit of work to fix it so
I used Win XP Computer Management--> Disk
Management later to create the fat32 parition and
bootit Ng to create the swap partition, which is free
as long as you don't install it to the hard drive. (trial)
This is easier with two master hard drives connected
to two different ide connectors on the motherboard,
slave the cdrom(s), if both disks are working well,
since you can use the MBRs without worry.

  • Dear Community, how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ? Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ? Cheers, Marek

    Dear Community,
how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ?
Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ?
    Cheers, Marek

    Thanks Jan.
Actually the reason to use Quantum SCSI tape recorder is to back-up big amount of data (propriety movies footage) both on PC (what is quite easy, using SCSII host adapter with VHDCI 68 connector) and iMac what seems to be not easy. All my search by Google leads to that conclussion, they finished production of SCSI-to-USB or FireWire because somebody stopped to produce chips to covert protocols. So even buying noe second-hand adapter, no guaranty it's still working with Lion (nobody is developing drivers anymore). Strange is, nobody or just a few are using SCSII (Ultra 320) devices (while the transfer is not bad, 320 MBps what is 2560 Mbps, so the only limitation is tape recording (some 80 MBps) not an interface. Using compression mode I can (and I do) record 1,6 TB of footage data. However quite slow, is safe and cheap, comparing with any HD storage solution. USB 2 is much more limited.
I'm using Time Capsule for buck-up. But even 3 TB one day will be full of data, then old back-ups will be eaten by new once, what is not good idea for archives. I'm using another 2TB NAS HD (2x2TB RAID 1), but this is also going to be full soon.
Of course, you are right, the option is another machine (OSX,Win,Linux or Solaris) equipped with SCSII controller. But this requires another machine, just for back-up time to time, and in practice iMac folders must be shared with that small auxiliary machine because amount of data practically excluding even temporary data collection on auxiliary machine. And it must be transfer by wire, not WIFI, my only network. Tape recording is in my case really good, professional solution, isn't it?
Anyway, if somebody has similar requirements as me, and found the solution for SCSI, please let me know. So far, follow Jan's idea, I'm thinking about some embeded mini PC, fanless, equipped with slot for SCSI, with SOME smart system on-board, to deal with iMac for type recording. The option is previous Apple model, but to be honest, I became Mac/OSX user 4 years ago. I fell in love with Mac, but my knowledge about previous models is based on Google....
My desk becomes full of boxes. Do you know how big Quantum TC-L42BX is ? Is very big. And now another box.....another keyboard....another screen... And one small adapter could solve the problem. Eh....
    Best regards,
    Marek

  • Forte For Java GUI Editor

    Hi everyone,
I've been trying to switch usage between Forte for Java running on 2 platforms (Win NT and Solaris 8). For this reason, I want to try to use the GUI Editor in each. But when I tried copying the same .class file from one platform to another and running opening the file under Forte for Java, the GUI Editor doesn't show up the form and Component Editor. Is there a way to make Forte for Java able to recognize the GUI components in a class file not creatd in Forte or not in that version of Forte? Thank you for any help!
    Bob

    Hi,
this happens not just with class file but also with .java
file. I created a GUI with Forte ( on windows ) and because I did not jave runtime setup on windows, I copied, java file that was created to the unix env. Then added some code to it and copied back to the windows.
After that, GUI editor never came up. I lost all that I did
to create a GUI. Now I can modify GUI only manually.

  • Using VCM to compare hardware metrics on physical servers

    Hi,
I have a large physical server estate (mix of Win, RHEL and Solaris) which all have had the latest VCM agent installed.
What I want to do with VCM is to select one physical machine and make it a baseline, then compare other physical servers to that baseline. Physical servers will be grouped into clusters (per application) and then into tiers (e.g. Test). I want to be able to check compliance of a clustered application against a single baseline physical server, then other application clusters within a tier, then tiers against other tiers.
Can anyone give me a started for 10 on creating a compliance template from an existing physical machine?
Note: I'm interested in hardware only at this point (driver metrics, BIOS etc) - OS comparison will come down the line.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Cheers.
    Jeremy.

If you want to keep the data from the baseline machine(s), even if the machines themselves change, or are removed, later, you should create VCM Snapshots for them.
These are managed under Administration\Machines Manager\VCM Snapshots. The Help for this node provides more detail about this feature. Basically, you first need to collect all the data you will be interested in including in the baseline, and then create a Snapshot to make a static copy of the data in the VCM database that will act like another machine entry.
To compare machines to a baseline machine, or to a baseline VCM Snapshot, use the Compare Machines action from Compliance\Machine Group Compliance\Templates node. Again, the Help provides a lot more information about this feature.

  • POWERBUILDER 4.0 ANNOUNCE

    제품 : SQL*NET
    작성날짜 : 1995-01-20
Subject : PowerBuilder 4.0
(create table...
Solaris,
    HP/UX, AIX 버젼이 발표될 예정입니다.
(OS/2 버젼은 5.0에서나 가능할 것으로, 인터넷 상에서 거론되고 있더군요.)

  • Partition inaccessable due to wrong choice of partition type

    Dear friends,
I have created a lot of problem for myself and now I desperately need your help to come out of this mess.
I have an 80GB hard disk with four partitions.
    1- C 10GB NTFS
    2- D 25GB NTFS
    3- E 25GB NTFS
4- not allocated (reserved for Solaris)
(All of these partitions are primary partitions)
I decided to install Solaris 10 for intel on my 4th partition. First I installed it on my friend's laptop
and it is working great. Both Win XP and Solaris are working fine.
Then I tried to install it on my PC. Everything was fine till it reached where it asked for the partition
where I wanted to install the Solaris. On that screen, I choose the partition type for the fourth (unallocated)
partition as Linux/solaris, but by mistake, instead of leaving the partition types of my other partitions C, D
and E as other, I changed the partition types of these trhee partitions as "PRI DOS" thinking that these are the primary partitions.
Solaris was installed fine and it is working, but my other three partitions have become corrupted. I could not boot into Windows XP. From boot manager, when I tried to select partition 1 (C), it displayed some error message like PBR or BPR not found etc.
I tried to check the partitions with fdisk, it showed the partition type of C, D and E as unknown. Then I
installed windows XP again on my C partition and tried to access my D and E partitions, but they are
inaccessable. Although it is showing the partition size, but in properties, it says 0 bytes used and 0 bytes available.
Dear friends, I really can't tell you how much important data is there on these two partitions. I never thought that this mistake would cost me so much. Please please help me getting out of this problem.
I need to know if there's any possibility to correct this mistake with least amount of destruction to the file
systems on these partitions? Is there any data recovery procedure/software which can bring my data back in original form as much as possible??

    Dear Kidari,
Thank you very much for the response and sorry for the late reply from my side. Actually I was posted away from my home for the last two months so could not try the solution mentioned in your mail.
Yesterday I managed to d/l knoppix and tried the method you had suggested. Unfortunately it did not work. It did not recognize the partition.
Here I would like to emphasize on the point that since I changed the partition type to "PRI DOS" during Solaris installation, so it is no more an NTFS partition. Now it has been changed to DOS 16 kind of FS. So all I need is a way to get my data back from a partition which was accidentally converted from NTFS to "PRI DOS". Any procedure/software which can read data from this kind of "changed" partition.
I would appreciate any clue to any other appropriate forum where I would be able to get a bit of help in this regard.
    Thanks

I'm afraid I don't know how to repair the NTFS
partitions. You could try to recover their data,
though, using a Knoppix CD. Knoppix is a Linux
distribution which a) runs a full system off the CD
without hitting the hard drive, and b) understands
    NTFS.
    1. Burn the iso from knoppix.org & boot from it.
    2. The devices of your Your NTFS partitions will
    probably be /dev/hda1, /dev/hda2 & so on.
    # fdisk -l /dev/hda
    should tell you.
    3.
    # mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
    4.
    # ls /mnt
That should show you all the stuff in the top level
of your first NFS partition. You'll need a network
drive (samba, NFS) to which to copy the things you
really really need. perhaps knoppix will let you
    burn CDs too.
    Repeat for each partition.
If this doesn't work, and no one else's suggestions
work (try them first!), then you can use the fdisk
utility within knoppix to change the declared
    filesystem type
of a given partition: you could try to change the
    type back to NFS.
    # fdisk /dev/hda
    t <to change type>
L <to see hex codes for different FS types>
This fdisking might make your problem worse. though,
so treat this as a last resort. Booting off
knoppix and copying stuff onto the network is safe.

  • Easy way to intall apps

    Hi,
I'm planning to install apps to learn but noticed lot of people mentioning problems with install on Windows ( like required the 3'rd party tools etc).
Is it straight forward on Solaris ? I have both Win 2003 and Solaris tetst severs available. Which one would be easier to install and learn ?
If someone has any white paper for installing apps please email it to me.
Just to give you my back ground, I've involved in install/admin of Oracle db/ ias on Nt and solaris before.
    Thanks in advance,

    Asha,
