WIN XP PRO compatibility - retail OEM (not restore OEM) VS full retail box?

I was under the impression that Boot Camp will only allow installation of Windows XP Pro 32 bits RETAIL, that is the full install copy purchase in store and not an OEM copy.
Then, I realised there is confusion between:
-OEM from a retailer to go in a custom PC
-OEM used to restore a DELL, HP, or other purchase computer
I fund two different Windows XP Pro 32 bits that are 150$ difference:
OEM from online store (just the CD) such as,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=25718 30&CatId=672
vs
RETAIL version (full boxe) such as,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=11049 19&CatId=672
Please clarify if you can.

Brun:
Please click [HERE|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116511] and you will see that it is an OEM version however cheaper than the links you proposed.
You right. OEM Installations will work as long as the user understands that the license (once activated) will only work on the first computer that it is installed and is not transferable. The link above is an example of this. These installations disks are bought directly and do not accompany any computers.
The other OEM version is the version that come with branded disks such as DELL and HP etc. This will not work and will almost always fail installation.
Then there is the FULL retail version where the license is transferabe from one computer to another as long as it is only used on one machine at a time.

  • R7770 / Win XP pro driver issue - directx not supported help please!

Hi guys sorry to bother you, and for such a long question.
I've just purchased a brand new MSI branded AMD radeon r7770 to replace my nvidia 8800gt graphics card which finally bit the dust last week.
Despite uninstalling the old nVidia drivers, trying the ones that came with the card and downloading and installing the very latest versions from both the AMD and MSI sites, I still cannot get directx to work. At first glance, the drivers look to be installed OK, (the Catalyst Control Center starts up etc) but none of my games run, and the desktop refresh is incredibly slow. KSP's crash log helpfully states that it cannot find the device driver. When I run Dxdiag.exe all the directx diagnostic tags are greyed out and the info box states that the card does not support directx.
The system is pretty ancient but should still be up to the task as it was a well speced gaming PC in its day:
Mboard: Asus P5K3 Deluxe (intel P35 chipset)
    CPU:      Intel core2duo Q6600 (quad-core)
mem:     4 gig Corsair ddr3 mem.
    PSW:     600W
    OS:      Win XP pro SP3
I'm aware that this is an old PCI-E 1.0 board and the card is designed around PCI-E 3.0, but the computer boots up and starts Windows just fine. Both the Bios and Windows detect the R7770 correctly. (I'd have thought if this was an issue - it wouldn't go past POST at all and begin beeping like crazy!)
To muddy the waters still further, as a experiment, I installed an old radeon card for test (a crappy Sapphire hd 2600 pro PCI-E version), which is about the same age as the rest of the system.
I couldn't find the drivers disk initally, so downloaded the relevant ones from Sapphire and AMD. Got EXACTLY the same problem as above: it looks as the drivers have installed but no Directx support (which is daft as I used to use that card games until I could afford to replace it with the 8800)
I tried everything I could think of for hours (including disabling driver signing security, stopping anti-virus software, trolling through the windows/ inf, System32 and System dirctories to weed out anything ATI - you name it) then miraculously found the old drivers for the HD 2600. Installed them with no probem at all - everything worked just as it should!
So, I looks to me like the XP drivers on the web are now garbage. Anyone else have similar problems or know of a workaround?
I'm not exactly rich so can't afford Win 7 or the dreaded Win 8  (which I loath) or a new PC, which is why i'm soldering on with this dinosaur!
The only thing I haven't done is splat Windows and do a clean install, do you think that'll help? If so why did the old radeon drivers work (win has been cleanly re-installed many a time since I last used that card, so there was no legacy junk lurcking in the windows diectory or it's registry)
Do you think I'd have better luck with NVidia? If so could you kindly recommend an alternative from them? I know an R7770 is a bit OTT for such an old system, but they are dirt cheap at the mo and not much more expensive than much less powerful cards.
Anyone have any thoughts about UBuntu? If it is a driver issue or there is no workaround, I may need to consider this route. Trouble is none of my legacy games will run on Linux and i'm not sure virtualization is available for my mboard.
Anyways, thanks for your time and for any suggestions you might make

Hi Flex, thanks for the quick reply and for the advice.
In the end i got it going by changing the boot.ini settings.
They were initially set with the /3GB /fastdetect switch to force the WinXp kernal to run in 1GB, and not take up 2GB as is it's default.
It was set that way to stop a 32bit game (KSP) crashing every 10 minutes or so, through lack of addressable memory.
All I did was simply set the boot.ini back to its default and directx sprung to life. I reset it back to 3GB to make sure it wasn't a fluke and as soon as I did, it killed directx again.
Maybe its a driver issue afterall - probably lack of proper XP support by AMD (This dosen't happen with the old- - 2008 vintage - version 4 ATI radeon drivers.) or perhaps its because the card has twice the memory over my old cards and therefore needs to access a higher portion of I/O allocation than is available in 32bit WinXP.
Its all a bit ironic really as i'm finding the R7770 runs like crap under dirx9 - i'm getting about 30% the frame rate of my old Nvida 8800GT and, as I can't use the 3GB switch anymore, it crashes every 5 mins or whenever I play any resource intensive game.
As the crashes are caused by lack of available address spaces under 32 bit systems, I've bitten the bullet and got 64bit Ubuntu. Got this working in the wee small hours last night - including the R7770 using the AMD catalyst drivers for Linux. Hopefully that will sort things out (and gimmie an excuse to learn a proper OS!)
Wish me luck i can see another "steep learning curve" on the horizon!
    Cheers

  • Win 7 Pro x64 Error 0x8007046a: Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

I installed Win 7 Pro x64 on a reasonably decent  machine (Nvidia nForce 680i SLI, core 2 duo, 4 gig ram). It was a clean install on a freshly formatted partition. While copying a large bunch of files from another machine on the LAN, I get "Error 0x8007046a: Not enough server storage is available to process this command." It does give me the option to retry and continue, but the error inevitably pops up again later during the copy. Googling the error, I found a reference to it, suggesting I go to the registry and increase the IRPStackSize (but this article was not specific to Win 7). I tried increasing it as high as 32 hex. This reduces the frequency of the error, but does not eliminate it completely. Also, I now see a new error sometimes that says, "Too many files are currently in use. Quit one or more programs and then try again." That's odd, because I don't have anything else running. I haven't seen these errors when copying files to different partitions on the machine, so I assume it's something to do with network.

    Hi,
To troubleshoot the issue, please try to do an In-Place Upgrade to repair the system.
    1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.
    2. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive.
    3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:
If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.
If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
    a. Click the Start Button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the start search box and then click OK.
Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.
    b. Click Install now.
    4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows 7.
    Thanks,
    Novak

  • FF4.0, 32 bit Win 7 Pro, toolbar settings, bookmarks not saved. How to solve?

Greetings. After upgrading from XP, SP3 to Win 7 Pro, 32 bit, neither the settings for my toolbars nor my boodmark changes are kept. I've tried the solutions for these problems listed for XP, but they don't seem to function for 7. Is there a solution to this problem any non-geek can use? Do I need to upgrade to FF5, and if so, can I use my current Google Toolbar (kind of like a security blanket) with it? My thanks for any rational and useful responses.

In premiere I can control the camera, I can capture sound, but I cannot capture video
If you can capture sound, you also capture video, because it is a transport stream, and nothing more than a digital transfer of binary data. There is no way you can only capture sound and not video, because they are in the same data stream. You can limit import into your project to audio only, or video only, but the captured stream always includes both audio and video. So check your import settings or use HDVSplit, a free capture utility to capture.

  • Win xp Pro and card will not w

I had a sound blaster li've with win 2k and it worked fine. The comp is a AMD 64 bit 3200+ with msi K8n Neo board, gig of ram, etc I recently upgraded to win xp and the card does not work. I bought a newer card, audigy, in hopes that it might be newer and compatible with XP. Guess what...not a chance. I have been on phone 3 times with Creative Labs and got a quick fix each time after a 30 minute hold and none have worked. I have thus far:?-installed-call?told turn off all virus software-reinstalled with virus software all disabled-call?2 told to do clean install-done clean install-call?3 told to download windows media-downloaded windows media SDK 9.5-reinstalled clean again-still not working?when i run diagnostic it tells me that the card passes but midi driver, wave driver, etc all fail. I have seen this as a constant problem, but have not seen a real solution. Anyone have any ideas?

Expand what you mean by 'does not work'
Does it show in device manager?
Have you got the latest drivers installed via the creative website?
Do you get ANY sound be it via mp3 or cd or a movie?
Right click on the my computer icon
    select manage
expand the system tools - event viewer - and look in application and system tabs for any sound related errors.
After you did a clean install of xp did xp pick the soundcard up in device manager or did it say unknown device? Did you install the drivers from a supplied cd or via creative website?

I have installed Win 7 professional on hp touchsmart 320-1030 with an OEM DVD to overwrite Win 7 premium  preinstalled from factory.
I want to reboot the machine with the same DVD after completing the installation, to test for possibility of reimage in case of crash. Although in bios, I specify cd\dvd as firts boot media,  the machine cannot boot from installation DVD.  I have 20 machines that behave this way. Can anyone assist?
Note: I had to delete all partitions on the PC before doing a fresh installation of Win 7 pro as Premium can not joing domain.

    Hello,
So, you installed Window 7 Pro with a DVD, you boot with it to install the O.S, and now it does not work?
Have you tried to load the BIOS default values or even updating the BIOS?
If it had work before, cant understand why it does not work now...
    Let me know.

  • Lenovo Twist - How do you copy Win 8 Pro onto recovery partition?

I upgraded my Lenovo Twist (3347-4HU) from Win 8 to Win 8 Pro with Windows Media Center (WMC).  How do I copy the newly purchased operating system and WMC to my HDD recovery partition so that if I ever have to do a restore, it will restore Win 8 Pro with WMC and not the original copy of Win 8 that came on the computer?  My concern is if a recovery is done from the factory recovery partition, I will lose my upgrade that I purchased.

Another option would be to make a full-drive backup to an external HDD.  You can use the oddly named "Windows 7 File Recovery" feature to make the backup.
It's probably a good idea to do that on a regular basis.

  • Win 7 preinstalled through downgrade rights in Win 8 Pro 64

My new T430s has Win 7 Pro preinstalled via downgrade rights in Windows 8 Pro.  I assume this means the recovery media on the machine is for Win 7(?).    Since the machine apparently has a Win 8 Pro license that has been downgraded, what is the procedure to follow to upgrade the existing license to Win 8?
I tried searching Support (which hasn't worked much of the PM) to locate instruction for upgrading a machine that already has a Win 8 license, yet whose preinstall was downgraded to Win 7 Pro.  I'm not sure whether the COA is in BIOS - and if it isn't, will these machines be unable to access the Lenovo tools from the Windows Store?
I would sure appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.   Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I solved the issue so I'm updating my post for continuity.  I managed to fetch the original box from the dumpster (!!) where I discovered a Windows 8 Pro Operating System Recovery Disc.  I also noticed a small sticker on the outside of the box indicating that both OS were included.
If anyone else receives one of these pre-downgraded Win 8 Pro machines, you'll find the Safe Computing envelope actually contains something worth keeping.

I have a problem with my iTunes. After i updated my iTunes to 11.1.3.8, i can no longer download songs, apps or updates apps with my iTunes PC. I am not re-ripping my CD's to AAC
    Huh?
Then why did you write, "decided to use iTunes, and set it to Rip my CD's to AAC"?
If possible (and for best quality) you should RIP for the CD and not convert between lossy formats (AAC/MP3/WMA).
My question was simply why does iTunes take 3 times as long to RIP a CD at 128kbs AAC then WMP10 does to rip a CD to 192kbs WMA, and what can I do to give iTunes a boost?
    In response to yoru question, Pac wrote;
"1) UPDATE FIRMWARE for the CD burner drive and get the latest updates for your system, like BIOs hardware ect ect from the PC makers site
    2) Slow the burn speed from "Max" downto 16x 8x or 4x"
The reason I would prefer to go with AAC is that for the "same" bit rate/quality as MP3 you actually end up saving some space - on my calculation about 25% - so that is preferable.
You must be calculating something incorrectly.
Using iTunes to RIP, AAC and MP3 at the same bit rate are almost identical in file size.
The quality is definitely not the same.
There are better MP3 codecs available(LAME).
if there is other software out there that will RIP to AAC - and is faster than iTunes - then let me know.
Yes, there are different apps that will RIP AAC, but I can't recall offhand.

  • Retail Question - Win 8 Pro - Obtaining and Licenses

The responses I've read through appear to be as late as 8/2013. It is now 2/2014.
I am performing a new system build (New SSD, pre-existing CPU/MOBO). I want a complete/full retail version of Win 8 Pro. I believe my current installation is corrupt and do not wish to migrate the corruption to the new platform. I also want a full
box set for Win 8 Pro with current drivers, pre-installed features/functions, etc. available. Q: Is there a full retail version NOW available for purchase of Windows 8 Professional?
I am performing a new system build (brand new and designated as HTPC for my home). I want a complete/full retail version of Win 8 Home for the build of the new platform. Q: Is there a full retail version of NOW available for purchase of Windows 8 Home?
In both cases, the installations shall be used to permit access by the new HTPC, current Win 7 Home Laptop, tablet and other devices including BluRay Players. The Win 8 Pro is needed as a fresh install in order to provide support for the multiple devices,
as a learning platform, as a platform to access two 4TB drives along with extensive personal content and data (BitLocker Encrypted).
Please advise if the versions of the product are for sale and if so where.
    Thank you.
Jim - Mastiffs are the greatest!

Thank you for the response and link. Unfortunately, the following statement is blaringly obvious once you follow it.
Important: Windows 8.1 Pro full version is for Windows 7 users only.
Please provide a location where there are no stipulations for the full version, or the use of a system builder version (OEM).
I would prefer to acquire the product as a complete set, without having to use it on a new build with no prior OS installed; rather than have to first have a license for XP, Visa or Windows 7. In both questions above, I indicated it was a
    new system build.
Does MS not provide a version of the OS for new home-build units? Is it completely restricted to only prior license holders of the product?
