Win XP won't recognize boot camp partition

Hi,
I wanted to create a small partition to run windows apps on my new MBP. So I did using Boot Camp assistant. I chose to partition 20 gig. Everything went alright, I could see the partition in the finder.
So I went on to install windows XP. It copied files for a while but when it asks me to chose in which partition to install Win XP, I only see macintosh HD which has 130 gig left. Weird thing because the finder tells me I have 110 gig left on macintosh HD and 20 gig on bootcamp.
So I removed the bootcamp partition, repartitioned a fresh bootcamp 20 gig. Started the installation process all over again and the same thing happenned.
I don't know what to do. I also have an authentic copy of Win7 I could install but i'm not sure since the copatibility hasn't been ''approved'' by apple.
So that's about it. Any help on installing Windows (XP or 7 ... not Vista) will be very appreciated.

I see this happen from time to time, and so far, no one really knows exactly, only that XP comes in different flavors, some don't work, some will just go ahead and install... without asking where, and overtop of and wipe out the entire drive with Mac OS X along with it.
Even XP SP3, so that isn't a solution.
Me, I'd jump ahead, dump XP which is not going to be supported forever, and use Windows 7; or use a VM if possible.
But your CD needs to be exchanged / returned and no amount of incense or magic will make it suddenly work. And it is no fault of yours. It could of course be a problem with Boot Camp Assistant and how it determins and sets up and tricks Windows into seeing Master Boot Record and hides the fact it is a drive with GPT. It really is not a full fledged partition tool.

Windows Installer Doesn't Recognize BOOT CAMP Partition

Hello,
I need help and cannot find the answer anywhere on the Internet. I created a 15 gig Windows partition through boot camp successfully. My macbook restarted to run windows installer and I got through all of the screens except where it asks which partition I want to install windows on (Only gives the option of C: which is the size of my Mac OSX drive). I didn't want to install over that drive since it'll write over my Leopard OS. Does anyone know why it won't recognize the boot camp partition? I show the partition on my desktop and in my drive directory.
I also am using an old Windows XP CD that I am not sure if it has SP2 on it. I know we NEED SP2 but I'm wondering if the CD might not contain the SP2 then it won't recognize the partition (maybe the reason for needing SP2). I thought that it would still install it just wouldn't work if we updated to SP2... any ideas?!?

You do need SP2 or later, and even then, some discs do what yours did, don't prompt for target partition or give any option, AND auto select the full OS X partition.
Unless you can slipstream a full SP2 I'd shop for an SP3 disc, and make sure you aren't cutting the partition size short (and leaving 20% free on OS X at least afterwards).

Time machine won't backup boot camp partition in Lion

The partition appears in the excludes list. If I remove and save, it reappears. The partition was being backed up under Snow Leopard.

Time Machine requires uses some features of HFS+; it won't work on FAT/NTFS file systems, as far as I know.
You could use something like Winclone to back up the Bootcamp partition from the MacOS, or natively back it up from within Windows.

The VT-x is running beautiful in my macintosh partition, but I can't understand why in my boot camp partition the VT-x remains disabled.
My processor is a Intel Core I5-2435M , I downloaded the intel processor identification utility, and my processor supports the virtualization tech and hyper-threading tech.

Yesterday morning I found my mac suffered from a b-tree failure and was unable to access OS X 10.6. I ended up booting into my Boot camp partition of Windows XP and backed it up then reinstalled Snow leopard. Then I upgraded to Lion, saw it fail due to a partitioning issue, created a 2gb partition called Mac HD 2 (by shrinking mac hd), saw i could install but not full install. So I created another partition and installed Lion successfully. Got into Lion and shrunk my 2x 2GB partitions into one 4GB partition. Is there any way to get the boot camp partition to work?
I did notice that when I was looking through the settings I could choose which HD was the default boot option. Mac hd with 10.7 and a folder called Windows XP were both available.

We also cannot get Robohelp to recognize our FrameMaker installation.
We are using Robohelp 9 and Framemaker 11.
We are in the process of moving all of our Robohelp content to Framemaker, but our project team still needs CHM files for the next release or so. So we figured we could move our content to Frame 11, then import the Frame content into Robohelp when we needed to generate the CHM files.
The process works great when we use RH 10 and Frame 11, but we get the following error when we use RH 9:
"This operation cannot be completed without FrameMaker. Install FrameMaker and try again."
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Frame 11 and RH 9, but am still getting the same error. Buying a set of new Robohelp 10 licenses probably isn't an option.
Any other suggestions?

Cloned boot camp partition won't boot

I've bought a new SSD, installed OSX and used Disk Utility to make 2 partitions. 1 for OSX and another fat32 partition for win XP.
I cloned my old windows xp boot camp partition with dd.
then I followed the instructions to add a new hybrid master boot record and marked the partition bootable (sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0, flag 4).
But the Boot camp partition doesn't show up during boot while pressing ALT and vmware is not able to boot into windows.

I can't use winclone, cause they cancelled the fat32 support and older versions don't run unter osx 10.9.

My boot camp partition does not recognize inserted discs

I am running OSX 10.5.8 and have a Boot Camp partition set up with Windows XP. The Windows partition works fine, but no longer recognizes when a DVD or CD is inserted. The disc does not appear in the My Computer folder, even though the drive is spinning. The eject button does not function to eject the disc, and I have to shut down the Windows partition, boot up in the Mac partition to eject or see the disc contents.
This prevents me from installing any software on the Windows partition.
Any suggestions?

Years ago there were issues with "Gear" software drivers preventing DVD/CD from working.

Windows XP Setup doesn't recognize my Boot Camp partition! HELP!!!

I just got my MacBook two days ago, and as soon as I got it, the first thing I did was partition the hard drive using Boot Camp Assistant, but didn't have an XP installation disk, so just left the partitions until I got the disk. But then today I got a Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Install Disk. I followed all of the instructions in Boot Camp, and I started the setup. When I got to the menu that said to choose a partition, it only showed my Mac OS X partition and not the Boot Camp partition. The only partition there was Partition 1, file system unknown, and so I quit the setup and booted up into Mac, and deleted the partition, then made another one in Boot Camp Assistant. I then tried the setup again, and got the same exact thing. Has anybody else had this problem, and if you have, how did you resolve it? This is very annoying, and any help would be appreciated.

This is nonsense. I installed from an OEM disk yesterday. The Windows OEM & retail installation disks are barely any different.
Note that Microsoft maintain that legally, as per the EULA, you can't buy an OEM version yourself & install it, and also that the license sticker's key may only ever be used on the PC it was originally stuck to. Here in Europe they suffered a court defeat on that latter point - you certainly need a separate license key for each computer but it maybe transferrable if you uninstall from the original PC. Nevertheless, Microsoft still insist to anyone who pays them attention that this condition holds, and indeed your jurisdiction may vary.

Boot Camp partition won't mount in Disk Utility all of a sudden

I used to have a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition set-up and working perfectly.
Turned on my 2009 Mac Mini today and couldn't see it in the Finder. Opened Disk Utility, it was there, but grayed out. Right clicked and selected "Mount BOOTCAMP", got "mount failed"
Tried verifying and repairing disk, but no joy. So I removed the boot camp partition using Boot Camp Assistant and started again. Went fine, installed Windows 7 fine.
Booted back into Snow Leopard so I could unpair my bluetooth keyboard (I've found that I can only set-up the bluetooth keyboard in Windows 7 if I unpair it in OSX first). Again, Boot Camp partition doesn't show in the finder, and is grayed out in Disk Utility.
I googled this problem, and found a few people mentioning that NTFS drivers in OSX (e.g. MacFUSE, paragon etc) can cause issues because they conflict with Snow Leopard's own NTFS driver. I did have MacFUSE installed, so I removed it, but it didn't seem to change anything.
Any suggestions?

install NTFS-3G (http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/)
open disk utility and mount your greyed out partition (NTFS-3G will mount it)
unmount it
open system preferences, go to tuxera NTFS pref, second tab (Volumes)
make sure your windows 7 partition is selected from drop down menu then click "disable tuxera NTFS"
at this point i rebooted into windows, then rebooted back into snow leopard. my windows partition was once again mounted and visible in Finder

How do I back up my Boot Camp partition to external firewire drive?

I have a 15 GB Windows XP Boot Camp partition (FAT32). I want to back it up to a 120 GB external Firewire drive. (I know the backup won't be bootable). In OX X Disk Utility, I formatted the external drive as MS-DOS (FAT). I planned to do the backup using the Windows Backup utility.
However, when booted into WinXP, Windows will not recognize the external hard drive. I thought I might need to create a FAT32 partion of 32 GB or less on the external drive, but I apparently can't do this in OS X or Windows (since Windows doesn't recognize the drive).
Any suggestions on how to backup the Boot Camp partition will be appreciated. I'm mainly interested in preserving all programs and data. Ideally, a clone could be created that could be restored back to the original partition in bootable form, but from studying this and other forums, it dosn't seem to be easy to do this for a FAT32-formatted volume.

My goal was to create a bootable clone of my FAT32 Boot Camp partition, while at the same time increasing the size of the partition from 15 GB to 32 GB if possible. This is what I did:
1. As suggested in this thread, I used Disk Utility to create a disk image. I formatted it as MS-DOS (FAT), and made it 32 GB in size.
2. Used the Finder to copy all files from my 15 GB Windows XP partition to the new disk image.
The following steps were only to determine if the disk image is a viable backup:
3. Removed the internal hard drive with my original Win XP partition, and installed a new internal hard drive.
4. Used Boot Camp Assistant to create a 32 GB Boot Camp partition on the new internal drive.
5. Inserted my Win XP installation disk and started the Windows installation. Formatted the new partition as FAT32. (I used the long rather than the quick format method--not sure if this was necessary.)
6. Continued the Windows installation to the point of restarting the computer, at which time I used the Option key to boot back into OS X.
7. Used the Finder to copy all the files from the 32 GB disk image to the new Boot Camp partition. (This overwrote a few Windows files installed by the aborted Win XP installation.)
8. Restarted and used the Option key to select the new 32 GB Boot Camp Partition. Windows booted as usual with all files, programs, etc. from the original 15 GB partition. Windows did complain about "new hardware" and required a restart, but all appears normal.
This indicates that the disk image containing all the files from my original Boot Camp partition is a viable backup, and can be used to restore the partition if necessary. I'm not sure if formatting the disk image as MS-DOS (rather than Mac OS extended) was necessary, or not.

Creating and restoring a Boot Camp partition using Paragon

I am trying to restore a clone of the Boot Camp partition that's on my MacBook Air (Snow Leopard) to My MacBook Pro (Lion).
I was told I could do this without requiring the Windows 7 installation disk by using Paragon Hard Disk Manager.
I downloaded the Paragon Hard Disk Manager on the MacBook Air in the Windows partition and followed the steps the Wizard told me. I chose back up. I successfully backed up the Boot Camp partition but noticed that the amount of disk space on the back up external drive was about 8GB, but the amount used up by Boot Camp was 16 GB.
When I went into the new computer and tried to create a Boot Camp partition, I am not able to do this without installing Windows software.
When I plugged in the external drive which had the back up on it, it just has some files and no Wizard I can use to restore the Windows partition.
So I think I've done it wrongly.
When I first started the wizard, there was a choice of making an image. I did choose this initially and a message came up and said I had done this but there was nothing else - no information about where this image was and what I should do with it. So I chose "Back up" and that is where I am.
Even if I do manage to create an image that contains everything, the operating system and the files, how can I restore that to the newly created Boot Camp partition on the other computer if in order to create the Boot Camp partition I need to install a Windows 7 disk?
It's not that I don't have a valid Windows 7 installation disk, I do but I have to call telephone support to install it because the activation is tied to the first laptop which has issues and needs to be repaired and that's why I am doing the migration of the data. And it's inconvenient to do the telephone thing because it's after hours now and I want to get the clone of the Windows partition before I send off the computer for repairs which I am supposed to do tomorrow morning.
Plus, I am not sure by using the Windows 7 installation disk and migration of data method that I will have the partition looking exactly the same as before, and that's very important for me because I do internet banking with a foreign bank and it took ages for them to set up the internet banking on my computer, and I am worried that internet banking won't work if I do not have an exact clone of the Windows partition.
I can go back again and try making an image disk but I still have the problem of using the Paragon program which is a Windows program on the Mac operating system, which I have to use when I am creating the Windows partition. Is there other software from Paragon that I am supposed to get?

Paragon didn't work for me and their support is quite lousy. I think I just threw $50 away.
I didn't need another activation key to install Windows 7 on the second computer (MBP). The boot camp installation went smoothly. Once in Windows, I downloaded the software again, Paragon Hard Disk Manager, and then chose "restore". It didn't recognize the archive I had made on the external hard drive no matter what I did. I had to give up after a few tries.
So I went to the Paragon website to look for answers in the support section.
They do not respond to emailed support questions for up to three days after you send in the question even if you are a new customer.
I am tempted to ask for a refund because they have false advertising claiming that their product works when it doesn't.
The steps are not that hard to follow if you use their Wizard and the Wizard told me that I had done everything right and that I had created an archive and I named it and everything.
When I went to restore it, nothing. I couldn't even eject the volume. Very strange.
Their FAQ on Support site is unhelpful and full of technical terminology. Nothing pertains to my problem.
I really don't want the headache. Besides if all I wanted was to do a backup I could have used the free back up and restore utility in Windows 7 which is meant to be excellent.
Another Apple Support Discussion member said they had a similar problem, a problem with the archives, and that even after working with Paragon for seven months, it was still not resolved.
After a certain period of time after you've bought the product, you have to pay $50 to get support. It's not worth the bother.
It's a German company and German companies in general are not big into service. I can tell that this is true with this company.
So having been burned, I really do not want to keep going down this path. I really just want my money back.

Missing Boot Camp Partition

Hi,
I went through the entire thread ("Missing Operating system_ " After installing Yosemite) to try and fix my MBR and fix boot camp. But I am stuck now at the end because honestly I don't know what I am looking at and I don't want to destroy the progress that I made. Could somebody please take a look at my situation and tell me what to do next.

If neither BootCamp nor Parallels work, the problem is probably elsewhere. You can't blame BootCamp.
I suspect that your version of XP is the wrong type.

How do I write to my boot camp partition with Paragon NTFS that comes with Mountain Lion? Or how do I get my boot camp partition to show up in Paragon's "Available NTFS partitions:" panel like my external hard drive does?

I've just set up boot camp on my MacBookPro with a freshly installed Mountain Lion and Windows 7.
I would like to read and write in both directions from drive to drive if possible. I've hunted around quite a bit to try and work this out, and so far I understand that one can write to or transfer files from one drive to the other with Paragon NTFS among other softwares.
I noticed when I looked in my system preferences the utility "Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X" came with Mountain Lion and it will recognize an external hard drive when I have one plugged in under "Available NTFS partitions:". However, it does not automatically recognize my NTFS boot camp partition nor does it automatically give me write access.
Is the Paragon NTFS that comes with Mountain Lion limited in some way?
Do I still need to purchase and download the software of the same name from Paragon to get the full write privilidges I want or is there something I can do to get the version of Paragon on my MAC to recognize and give me write priviledges to my boot camp partition?
I'm open to all suggestions to get the read / write access between partitions in my boot camped drive.
MacFUSE is also listed in the System Preferences of my machine (it also came with Mountain Lion), if that helps. I'm still working out exactly what each of these is supposed to do and how I can use it to accomplish the task at hand.
My boot camp drive does appear normally in other contexts and in disk utility it indicates that the drive is mounted.

Interesting. Comes with? you didn't have either before? Paragon is commercial and is now v. 10.0, they were the only one keeping updated and was supporting 10.7.4. I would not enable more than one.
For writing to HFS Paragon has theirs but probably give the nod to MacDrive there.
I never do an upgrade to a new OS over the old system, I backup (clone) and format the drive with the new OS and do the install so whatever is there I know is clean and also to keep from carrying around leftovers from years and systems past.
I would assme Paragon is limited. Try their site and knowledge base?

After Boot Camp partition, iMac no longer boots

Hi, I have a 20" iMac Core Duo (the first Intel Mac off the line) running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I ran the Boot Camp Assistant to partition my hard drive, and it successfully created the "BOOTCAMP" drive. When it asked for my installation CD, I tried loading a Windows installation partition through a USB hard drive, but the assistant would not recognize it as an install disk. So, I closed out of the assistant early, leaving the Boot Camp partition in place. Eventually, I rebooted my machine in an attempt to boot directly from the USB drive and resume installation.
However, I found the machine will not boot at all. It powers on normally, makes the startup sound, but after a few seconds I'm left with just a flashing folder and question mark icon. Holding down Option-key at startup does nothing. Trying to boot from my Snow Leopard disc by holding down C or D during startup does nothing. Holding down Command-S does nothing. Holding down Shift-key does nothing. Resetting the PRAM does nothing.
What can I do? Is there some way I can access the on-board EFI to make sure the correct startup disk is selected? Why am I unable to boot from my CD drive?

On OSX go to System Preferences the Startup Volume and reset your Windows 7 partition to be the default.
On the next reboot it should automatically boot into Windows.
A PRAM-reset http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1895 can be the cause of this behavior.
