  • Can you share a USB hard drive over the network through an Airport Express?

After asking a few individuals at my local Apple Store, I have been consistantly told that I can plug in a usb hard drive into the bottom of my airport express and share it over the network.
However, after making sure my airport express has the latest firmware (6.3) and even donwloading and installing the airport disk utility I still am not having any luck getting my HFS (journaled) usb 2.0 hard drive to be visible on the network.
I have also noticed that when following the instructions on this apple support document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirportUtility/5.1/en/ap2108.html) that when I get to step 3, the option to click disks is grayed out. I assume this supports my theory that the airport express won't share hard drives, can anyone confirm?
Am I doing something wrong? Or were the reps at my store mistaken and the only hardware that can share a hard drive is the airport extreme not express?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Continuing my investigation I started to come to the conclusion you just mentioned. I am surprised none of the staff at my store realized this. However, at least I know now.
The basis for me looking to this is... With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

  • Can I encrypt a USB hard drive that's not for time machine?

can I encrypt a USB hard drive that's not for time machine?

Yes, if it has the GUID Partition Map Scheme, but only by erasing it and choosing a new format.

  • Can I Connect a USB Hard Drive Directly to the IX4-300D?

I need to copy large amounts of data from a USB hard drive to the IX4-300D. So can I connect the USB hard drive directly to the USB port on the IX4-300D?
If "yes", how does the USB hard drive show up in Windows so I can select the file to copy?

    Hi exceptionalht,
The USB ports are intended for external storage devices such as flash drives and USB hard drives. Once you connect the hard drive to the USB port, the device's content will show up as a new share in the Shares page. You should be able to map that share in Windows or have Storage Manager map it automatically.
To safely remove the external hard drive, go to the External Storage page and click the eject icon for that device.

  • I can't mount a USB Hard Drive...can you?

I can't mount a USB hard drive on MAC or PC. Mac it does not mount - PC won't accept password.
    Does it even work?
AirPort Extreme n   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   PC too

I just bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n and a WD MyBook Essential Edition 500GB to use with it as a shared disk. Reformatted it on my Mac and it works fine, but can't get Airport Disk Utility to see it. I've tried resetting everything, but no go.
The improved range compared to my old Airport Extreme 802.11b/g is great, but I've wasted my money on the disk if the Airport can't connect to it.
Why was there no explanation anywhere in the specifications that this new Airport only works with some USB disks? The way it's written is clearly designed to make you think that any external HD that connects to a USB port will work.
I too would welcome any thoughts on how to get the HD to work with Airport. Thanks.

Oh ok, well that was what the test said prior to reformatting the hard drive. Now, it doesn't find any trouble no matter how many times I run it. That's what has me so confused, everything seems to check out and yet...I can't do anything, not even install the software!

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • USB Hard Drive that Disk Utility says it can't unmount

I have a 93.2 Gb Hard Drive (from an old G4 PowerBook) inside an enclosure with USB connection. While trying to recover data from it using Data Rescue (on a G4 PowerBook), Data Rescue II hung. After restart, the USB Hard Drive can not be read at all. Disk Utility says it can't repair it or erase it because it can't "Unmount" the disk. What can I do with the USB Hard Drive?

try this: open system preferences/spotlight/privacy and drag that external into spotlight privacy then try Disk Utility.

  • Can't see my USB Hard drive in finder...

I have a 400gb freecom external USB hard drive. It is formatted for mac, and was running fine until today. I can see it in my Volumes folder but it doesnt appear on my desktop or in the sidebar in finder. I can eject it if i click the option button in the finder taskbar when i'm in the volumes folder but apart from that its as though it doesnt exist. any suggestions...

hi... i just tried that and nothing... it just comes up with that no entry kinda icon and wont let me mount it. I can still access all the files but i have to go into my volumes folder to do it.. which makes putting anything on the HD very awkward... it just won't appear in the finder or desktop... any other ideas?

  • Can't format external USB hard drive

    Hi Guys
I recently bought a Mac Pro, having decided to make the switch from PC, but am having trouble formatting an external 0.5 TB USB hard drive I used with the PC for use with the Mac. The drive was supplied formatted to Windows NTFS and when I first connected it to the Mac the blue LED indicator blinked off - presumably beacause OSX couldn't read the drive? Now, whenever I try to format the drive using disk utility I am presented with a message stating, "The underlying task reported failure on exit". If I try to partition the drive, I get a message stating, "Resource busy".
I am new to Macs and OSX, so imagine a lot of this problem is down to inexperience. I really need the external drive as I'm a musician, and store all my samples and projects on the drive.
    Cheers, Dan

AFAIK, NTFS isn't a supported format for an ICBM (Intel-chip-based Mac). You need to remove any data files and reformat it MS-DOS or some such thing. Check Disk Utility's help files and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303220

  • I have linked my seagate hard drive to my airport extreme but can not seem to find it in finder any ideas

    Hi Help Please
i have just linked an external hard drive to my airport extreme but it does not seem to appear in finder under shared !!!! any ideas

i have plugged the hard drive into a usb router which in turn is plugged to to the AEBS it is visible in airport utility but then can not find it anywhere else!!
First, the drive must be formatted correctly to work at the USB port of the AEBS. That means a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. NTFS will not work.
You need to have a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
Next, you may not have configured the Finder Preferences to display a connected hard drive. Please follow these steps:
o Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
o Click Finder, then click Preferences
    o Click the General tab
o Under the heading of "Show these itmes on the desktop", make sure you have a check mark next to Connected Servers
Restart both the AirPort Extreme and your Mac
Open Finder and check under the SHARED heading for your AirPort Extreme icon
Click on your AirPort Extreme and a folder will appear in the window to the right representing your hard drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop
Hopefully, you are not planning to try to backup files using the Time Machine application, as this is not supported by Apple.

  • Won't boot from USB hard drive?

Hi, all. My daughter has a brand-new Aluminum Macbook a week old, with all Apple software updates applied and everything running smoothly. She has a Seagate FreeAgent Go external USB 2.0 hard drive divided into two HFS+ Journaled partitions using the GUID partition scheme: a large partition on which to back up her internal drive, and a small partition for use as an emergency boot "disk." We've used the latest version of SuperDuper to make a bootable clone of her internal drive on the large backup partition, and I've just begun installing Leopard from her MacBook installer DVD onto the emergency boot partition as I write this (using my own computer). After 25 minutes, the installer DVD is still being "checked for consistency"; I hope things will finally begin to move along faster when the installation actually starts.
We'll see what happens when that installation is done, but before I began it, I checked to make sure the SuperDuper clone on the backup partition would boot the MacBook. To my dismay, it did not, although I held down the Option key during startup, selected the backup partition in Startup Manager, and clicked the arrow to proceed with booting from that partition. The MacBook booted from its internal drive anyway.
You'll note that I'm not a Leopard or Intel Mac user myself, so I'm not familiar with any issues that may be more familiar to regular users of that OS or of Intel Macs. Can anyone tell me whether SuperDuper has problems creating bootable USB clones that work in Leopard or on those machines? Is there something else I should be doing to boot from the clone we made, instead of using the Startup Manager? Any other thoughts on why this hasn't worked?

I have noticed that the start-up disk appears just about anywhere except in the upper right-hand corner. I too, was convinced once that I was booted from the wrong drive. However, I have implicit faith in SD and since it has never let me down, I searched and found the boot drive hiding amongst some files littering my desktop.

  • IMac 24 Aluminum won't boot from USB Hard drive

I just got an iMac 24 from the Apple Refurb store. It comes with Snow Leopard, but I need to install a Leopard partition for my wife to ensure 100% compatibility with Photoshop CS3, among other things. I created a partition just for Leopard, so that's good to go.
I can choose the boot partition on my Leopard install drive when starting by holding the "alt" key, that's no problem. However, after I choose that USB drive, it reboots... over and over and over and over. To be sure it isn't the drive, I tested it with my Macbook Pro, and it booted up just fine. I tried another USB drive, same exact problem.
I don't have a Firewire external that I can repartition for the purpose of installing Leopard. I only have it on hard drive. Then I tried making a DMG with disk utility and burning it to a DVD+R DL, but it tells me the disc isn't large enough, even though it's 8.5GB and the image is 7.6GB.
Pulling my hair out here guys! Is this refurb a lemon?

The Leopard install DVD I used to make the image is not available, it got stolen along with laptop bag it was in last Spring.
Is it this "image" (clone) of the installation disc that you are trying to boot from a USB drive, or a full installation of Leopard? If it's a clone of the installation disc on a USB drive, there are a few considerations.
First, what type was the original Leopard disc (the one you lost)? Was it a retail disc (the type sold separately in a box) or one that came with another Mac model, such as a MacBook Pro. If it's the disc from a MacBook Pro, it will not work because your iMac is a different model. Those included disc usually only work with the model it came with.
If it's a retail disc, the other consideration is the version on the disc. If you look at that everymac.com profile page, it says that the (earlier) pre-installed version of Mac OS X is 10.5.6 (9G2030). If that retail Leopard disc was earlier than 10.5.6 (such as the original 10.5.0 disc), then it will not boot that iMac because, as I said in the first reply - +Macs can generally boot the version of Mac OS it came with, or LATER (up to hardware limits), but NOT earlier.+
If that USB drive you are trying to boot the iMac from has a full installation of Leopard, please post back.

  • Qosmio F20-136 - Boot from USB Hard drive

    Dear All,
Is it possible to enable the Qosmio F20-136 to boot from a second hard drive connected one of the USB ports? I know that you can hit F2 during the boot to get 4 different boot options, but this isn't one of them.
    Thanks

    Hello
As far as I know it is not possible and I didn?t find any topic where someone can confirm this possibility. Anyway it will be very nice if something like that can be possible.

  • Can I connect two usb hard drives to my time capsule?

    Dear all,
I have bought a powered usb hub to connect two usa hard drives to my 3rd generation time capsule, as it is written in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421
I have formatted both hard drives, so now the file system is extended Mac OS (journaled). If I plug the usb hub to my laptop, I can access both hard drives. If I plug it to my time capsule, by no means I can access any disk. If I plug each hard drive directly to the time capsule, I can access each of them. I don't understand! what can be the problem? The file system is ok, the hub is powered and everything is working if I plug it to my laptop. Can anybody help me? Any idea? Thank you in advance!

A hub that works on a Mac does not necessarily work on a Time Capsule.. eg Some Belkin hubs do not work on TC even though they work on the Mac.. The TC having a small amount of ROM memory can only store drivers for a small selection of usb chipsets.. you need to buy a different powered hub..
What ones actually work with TC.. ?? Not sure.. google for success.
best usb hub airport (airport and TC are same thing)
This is coming up all the time.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3787224?start=0&tstart=0
Your problem is finding the right one, because even like belkin ones, a 7port might work, because belkin are rebadgers they don't make anything.. so it depends which factory they come from.. for a consumer product like a hub they probably care more about the outside and packaging appearance than the chip used inside. And lets face it.. all they care about in the end is to deliver it for the cheapest price possible to make money out of it.
