Win7 font manager utils and FM

Any recommendations for dealing with fonts on Win 7, or font manager utils that you particularly like, that presumably will play nice with FM and be considerate of some elderly Type 1 fonts too?
On a newly imaged system I just can't bring myself to dump fonts into the Windows/Fonts directory, it just goes sooooo far against the grain. I've tried, I really have tried. I just can't stand dumping all my prized fonts into the same directory as the 6-million-MSOffice-font-collection, it makes me crazy, I need more control. As far as I've been able to find out the only way to use separate directories is to use a manager util.
Also, about the Type 1 fonts, anybody tried creating PFMs using this:

Actually, you certainly can install fonts from private directories and not use a so-called “font manager.” Right-click the .PFM file wherever it is located and use the Install as shortcut option. This installs the font without moving the .PFM and .PFB files from where they are located. Of course, whatever directory those font files are actually should always be available (i.e., not on some external drive or network share).
The problem using “font managers” is that they often do not integrate will with Adobe software which effectively manages fonts internally. InDesign does provide an external hook for such third party “font managers” to work with InDesign (and its use of Adobe's internal CoolType module). I do not believe that FrameMaker provides any such support.
My personal recommendation is to avoid “font managers” like the plague, but to organize your fonts in a reasonable directory structure and install them via the Install as shortcut method.

PC Font Management, CS4 and Windows 7

I have a new PC.
Starting from scratch I had Windows Vista 64 installed as this was just before the Microsnot launch of Windows 7. I bought CS4 Design Premium and had this pre-loaded. I downloaded Extensis Font Fusion 2 and loaded that. After loading this I had issues with Illustrator crashing and also Indesign and Flash. Also Photoshop 64 pretty much wouldn't work at all. I removed Font Fusion2 and found the Adobe products were less flakey but still not solid. I then upgraded Windows to V7 64bit. This also improved matters though PS64 still wasn't 100% stable.I called extensis and they said that they had released a version that answered this issue, but since loading the latest version of Suitcase Fusion 2 Illustrator has become very much less stable and also PS64 is now unusable, which is a bit of a shag as I have paid to have 12 gB of ram in this machine which is only used by the 64bit apps.
I have called Adobe technical who were pretty unhelpful.
Has anyone found a good type manager for under £100 that actually works with Adobe CS4?

If you're working on a stand-alone machine, why not trying to work without font management?
I worked with suitcase 11, and all went fine. (running on xp64).
Since we're in a network, we opted for universal type server and client, both working well. I'm sure that on the web the're several free managers can be found

Font management (export and default)

How do I see which fonts my keynote 09 presentation uses? It's easy to use 'Replace fonts' to do this in PPT. This is obviously essential so I can be sure that the computer I'm doing the presentation on has the right fonts installed before I get there.
Also, how can I change the default font for every presentation I build? I hate Gill Sans. I'd like it to default to Myriad Pro, regardless of whether I use a theme.

Well, this is messy.
The easy way is to just change it manually on every master slide and save it as a new theme. The problem with that is you won't get every instance (such as chart labels and other things that are hidden).
The hard way is to edit the xml file in the .key or theme file. This is what I do when I'm making a new theme and I want to change the font. I open the xml file in TextEdit or TextWrangler and do find/replace for each font I find. The harder part is, you have to get it right. Sometimes I'll replace stuff manual in Keynote first so I have the code for my NEW fonts in the xml also. Then I look for each one and replace only the old stuff.
I know that's not much help, but if you're brave and make copies of your files, it's not really that bad. The xml file (called index.apxl) is INSIDE the .key package (which is also an issue in 09, see below) and it's usually compressed. You can safely double click the compressed file and delete that one, leaving the uncompressed version.

If you unzip a .key file, the xml file will already be uncompressed and ready to go.

If you upgraded to Snow Leopard, then it would seem that Suitcase 11 is not compatible with Snow Leopard and you'd need to buy Suitcase Fusion 3 for $99.95.

"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." Trying to format my iomega external HD for use with Mac

Hi. Trying to connect iomega ext. HD. i have to reformat for Mac. When i plug in & go to Disk Utility,the external shows up and i'm supposed to click "partition". When i do, a box comes up saying ""Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I quit and relaunched, same results. After googling my question, i came up with this:

(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)

Workaround
Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):
iTunes.pkg
iTunes4.pkg
You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.
Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
All seemed good, for a moment, until, upon going back to Disk Utility after removing itunes4.pkg and putting on desktop (i did not have itunes.pkg to remove) the same thing was happening. When i highlite my iomega ext. on left of page, disk perrmissions is grayed and does not allow me to click on it. Same problem from the start. Can somebody please help me out here? That would soooo awesome. Thanx!

You shouldn't be scared of that, because you should already have backups. If you don't have backups, then backing up is the first priority.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and restart. When you hear the chime, hold down the C key and keep holding it until the Apple logo appears on the display. You should now see the language selection screen. Select your language, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In the Disk Utility window, select the external drive (not the internal). The drive may already have a data partition, in which case there will be another icon below the drive icon. Choose the drive icon, then select the Partition tab. Create a single partition with the default options (GUID partition table, Mac OS X Extended Journaled).
When the partitioning is done, select the startup volume on your internal drive in the DU window. Select the Restore tab. Drag the icon of the startup volume to the "Source" field. Then drag the icon of the newly-created volume on the external drive to the "Destination" field. Make sure you have this right. Then click the Restore button, and the data on your startup volume will be copied to the external drive.

Intel Macbook and Airport management Utility

I am trying to set up airport management utility on my new Intel Macbook Pro. I have downloaded the utility and attempted to open it and get an error stating that it requires Airport 3.4. The update doesn't work and I believe I must have the latest Airport update. Might this be an Intel Mac issue?

Font management with InDesign and Windows 7

I am presently looking to upgrade to Windows 7 and use InDesign CS4. I have had a play with installing postscript type 1 fonts using the windows font manager and it seems absoloutley average, but it worked (I think). I was wondering if you had any suggestions of what would be best practice in this setup.

Thanks for that. I spoke to the team using indesign and they would love to move to Extensis Suitcase but they had experienced problems with MathMagic pro. I am going to test this out and hopefully resolve it but I wondered if you had any knowledge of compatibility issues?

User Experience with CS/CS2 fonts and font management

Im just ordered a 2.0MBP and am wondering about other user's experience with the MBP and CS or CS2 running in Rosetta as well as font management. I know there are lots of post about Adobe and Rosetta, but no cohesive forums describing what most user's experiences have been- both good and bad.
I plan on running CS (all apps except Version Cue) as i will wait for CS3 and skip over CS2. For fonts im currently running FontExplorer X and plan on continuing.
Id love to hear what Adobe software is working well (or not), what font management you are using and what system.

iknow those apps have their own fonts they use to work with their programs
i just want to know what would be safe to move around or remove period from my user font library.
i dont mean to sound redundant but i spaced out/forgot how i originally organized my fonts i know i added certain fonts to my font folder in my user's library font folder but cant recall if i added arial/verdana and some other fonts.
is there to check what apps depend on them or what?

According to your description, the error occurred on the custom page layout.
For a page layout to work with a given master page, the two must have the same set of content placeholders. If you create a page layout based on a particular master page, and then edit that HTML master page, you'll see this message. Even if you know that
changes to the master page didn't add or remove content placeholders, you should update the content regions of your page layout anyway, so that you can preview any changes from the master page that might affect your page layout.

Typekit and Font Management : Still a bit confused

I am still a little confused as to how the new Creative Cloud TypeKit works and how it will or will not effect our workflow.
We currently use Extensis Universal Type Server (UTS). We have a team membership license for Creative Cloud. Does TypeKit interject itself before fonts are loaded from UTS?
If fonts are downloaded to the desktop from TypeKit do I need to copy these into UTS? Should my users mix and match fonts acquired with UTS and TypeKit or maintain the status with UTS? Can you disable TypeKit if this is the case? How can we resolve conflicts with fonts if UTS and TypeKit are running?
Do we need to purchase fonts now that with TypeKit the claim is all fonts from Adobe are free with CC membership? How does this interact with UTS?
Does Adobe still sell fonts if TypeKit being part of the CC subscription implies the complete catalog is free?
How are font licensing issues handled with TypeKit? In the past, font licensing was a big concern in publishing and still very confusing as to use and purchasing.
I have been trying to get a firm understanding of the use and rights of fonts throughout my career and with TypeKit it puts many of my past understandings into perplexity.

Typekit doesn't install the fonts the same way you would install a perpetual license. I hope that article helps clarify specific questions.

A: UTS and Typekit should be able to work at the same time. However, you won't be able to add Typekit fonts to UTS. Each CC Team user would need to sync the fonts from Typekit that they wish to use.

A: If the font you need is in Typekit and you have a Portfolio Plan (through Creative Cloud Teams or otherwise) you get access to that font. So, you can sync it from Typekit and use it in desktop apps. If a font isn't available on Typekit, you would need to purchase a perpetual license for the team and add it to UTS like you have with other fonts.

A: Currently, you can still purchase perpetual licenses to Adobe owned fonts as well as some other fonts that they resell. However, the Adobe owned fonts and many other commercial fonts are available with a Typekit subscription. Access to Typekit isn't really free. You're paying for it when you pay for Creative Cloud. It's just that Typekit doesn't cost you anything extra since it's included.

Indesign crashing after update and says i am missing Font Manager.InDesignPlugin

My copy of Indesign was crashing everythime I launched a text box so I upgraded to the new version. Now it won't load at all but says you are missing

Problem installing Power Manager Utility

Hello, X60, I intalled a new XP SP 3 system and I wanted
to reinstall Power Manager Utility (I had istalled PM driver previously).
I downloaded the file fie g6u710ww.exe. But no go.
The system asks for Microsoft .NET 3 or later.
Well, the problem is that I istalled Microsoft . NET 4 (which is clearly later then 3).
Anyway, It won't install the Power Manager Utility.
What should I do?

I had the same issue with some sw earlier on my laptop with Win7/64 bit. That sw didn't want to be installed and needed the old .NET vesion. At the same time my system restricted old version .NET environment installtion process from M$ site or from sw installation package as I had up to date .NET. The result was I couldn't avoid that strange behaviour.

Good font manager?

Does anyone know of a good font manager/browser for Linux? In Windows, I have several (FontExpert, Typograf, and the font manager plugins in Total Commander, the best program on earth, and what kept me in Windows for so long... :-) ), but I haven't found anything even slightly comparable for Linux.
What I'm looking for is:
- Access both to installed and uninstalled fonts.
- A preview function with easy access to the full character set - preferably also with a good quick-zoom function for single characters (e.g. click-on-character zooms to huge) - to a test text, and to full font info.
- Comparison utility between fonts.
- Installation of fonts from the program.
- The option to temporarily enable or disable groups/packages of fonts, so that, e.g. music fonts are not loaded if I only work with text files.
- Organizing such groups
Does this exist, somewhere that I haven't found? I'd be happy if it did...

No problem - I'm not new to open source. On the contrary: when I found that most of the software I was using on a daily basis was open source, I figured I might as well go all the way. I still have a windows partition left on the computer, but I rarely use it.
And if I could make a font program, I would...
About the KDE font manager: well, it's decent, but nothing more. As far as I can see, there is a font viewer (KFontView), which is the barest of the barest, and then the font installer in the Control Center, which is just that: a font installer, but not a font manager. Opcion is decent, but apart from the ability to view uninstalled fonts, it doesn't offer much, really. Gucharmap is another program which seems to come close to what I want, but still not all the way...
