Win7 install dvd won't start on mac mini

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my mid 2007 mac mini (running snow leopard) in a bootcamp partition. I created the bootcamp partition (32GB) using bootcamp assistant (no problem there) and inserted the installation dvd, but once the mini reboots to start the installer I just get a black screen (symptoms very similar to those with the late 2006 iMac).
I tried using both the 64 and 32bit version but no difference there.
The win7 install DVD (bought, not downloaded) seems ok as installation as a virtual machine using vmware works.
I'ld really much prefer running windows in a bootcamp partition than through virtualization, so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

If it won't start past the screen with the Apple logo in the center, there's something very badly wrong with your system. Try starting in safe mode (hold down the shift key at startup, starting when you hear the startup chime and letting go when you see the Apple logo). If it starts up fine then (keeping in mind it will take longer than normal to start up in this mode, so be patient), but the problem returns when you reboot normally, you have some incompatible third-party software installed. What that might be is hard to say.
If safe mode doesn't work either, your system is probably badly corrupt. Try reinstalling. Hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode. Once you do that, go to Disk Utility and repair the hard drive. If problems are nonexistent or fixed, quit Disk Utility and then reinstall the system. (This will simply replace the existing system files, and should leave all your other stuff alone.) If problems cannot be fixed, report back for more instructions.

  • Install DVD won't start up

I can't install Leopard on my Mac Mini (1.83 core duo with 1gb ram). Everytime I start from the DVD I get a prohibitory sign -something like this: (\) (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805) I think that support link is talking about starting up from the HD not the DVD, I tried everything suggested there.
Could this DVD media be broken? Tiger starts up fine from the HD and Windows too.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Well, It turned out to be a bad media (got a new one from the store). Now that I installed Leopard, I tried to install the new boot camp drivers to my windows vista partition, but nothing happens, no auto play, no windows files, nothing... Is this another bad media?

  • I want to install XP Pro SP2 on a Mac Mini from a 2003 RIS server.

I want to install XP Pro SP2 on a Mac Mini from a 2003 RIS server. Is this possiIble? How is it done?
The mac has 10.5 which has bootcamp to enable Windows install. I have created a partition but the bootcamp utility asks for a CD. I want to install a RIS build. The Mac has a option for network boot but this seems to only work with Mac Server. I assume the network adapter is not PXE compatible and so a boot disk of some kind will be needed to kick this off?.

Your right. It won't make any sense to subscribe for a software that I don't own. I have CS5 on my Dell Laptop which has been giving me issues, so I re-installed the Operating System along with all my editing programs and nothing more. So I can toggle between the Mac and the PC to get the job done in the meantime. I will eventually get CS6 for the Mac.

You're supposed to download the latest iTunes from Apple official site and install it on your Mac.

Normally Microsft allows the installation of their programs, except Operating Systems, to be installed on a desktop and notebook at the same time as long as both system are used exclusively by the same person and Not at the same time.
So this should also be true for MS Office for Mac. The only way to tell is to install it on the Mini and then use the same key to activate it. If the activation goes through you are fine. But if you run both system at the same time do not open any of the Office programs on both system at the same time. That may trigger MS to disallow one of the activations.
MS Office for both Mac and Windows checks the local network and logs into the MS activation site everytime one of the apps is started to check current activation and to check if you have it running on more then one computer on your local network using the same key.

    Generally YES.
It's possible to hold separate iTunes library's on a single machine.
Generate two new folders inside the Music folder of the Mini and name them differently; e.g. man and woman.
Copy your whole library into "man" and your wifes into "woman"
Go to sharing in the system settings of the Mini and share the Music folder in your network.
After copying the whole library's to the Mini you may point iTunes to the new location at startup by holding the option key (alt) at the keyboard.
iTunes will then ask you where the library is located.
Point it to the matching library on the Mini.
    That's all.
    Lupunus
PS ... If you both use only the Mini you have to setup a user account for each and just copy the whole library to the Music folder in particular.

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • Mac Pro Early 2008 will not boot off Win7 Install DVD

    Hello,
I am hoping someone out there will have encountered something similar and have some suggestions or ideas, because at this point I can't think of anything else to try.
I have a 2.8 Ghz 8-core Mac Pro (Early 2008) with an Nvidia 8800GT Graphics card. I am running OS 10.6.2, fully patched and updated.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 Ultimate via Boot Camp, and am encountering a rather odd problem.
Once I have launched Boot Camp Assistant it allows me to partition the drive and does so correctly, but when it attempts to reboot off the Windows 7 installation DVD, I encounter a blank grey-white screen similar to that which you normally get on startup but without the Apple logo. This continues for some time (it seems to vary), and then the screen goes dark and the monitor says it is receiving no signal. The fans on the Mac Pro go for a while, then it goes to sleep. I've tried leaving it for a couple hours, no dice.
I've tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows install disks. I had the release candidate for Windows 7 installed previously, and it worked perfectly. I have since tried that same install DVD that I used to install the release candidate, and it encounters the exact same issue. Booting up off the Snow Leopard Install DVD works fine.
I tried doing a clean install of Snow Leopard on a spare drive, booting off that, and then starting from square 1 using Boot Camp Assistant to re-partition that same drive. Same problem. No matter what I do or try, my Mac Pro does not want to boot off this install disc. I have yet to try the disc in another machine to see if it works there, and I will as soon as I can, but the fact that the RC disc worked a few months back and now will not seems to rule out the boot discs as defective. I've also tried both my internal optical drives with no change, and no other discs have any issues.
I've already spent an hour and a half talking to Apple Technical Support, and they seemed stumped, so I'm hoping someone will have a notion. If not, I understand and appreciate you taking the time to read this- I have no idea at this point, and I'm generally a pretty knowledgeable user.
    - Andrew

    Thank you for your reply,
Pull all the drives you have other than the one that you will install Windows 7 to.
I think I will try this next.
Don't put Windows 7 on the same drive as OS X, give it its own.
That was initially what I started out doing.
And you don't even need Boot Camp Assistant.
True, but it's what Apple suggests using.
Might also want to try moving the monitor cable to the other card port.
Hmm, I think I'll try that.
Any other PCI cards or devices attached or installed should also be questioned or disconnected.
    I've disconnected everything I could.
Always a good idea to start fresh which I assume you are doing (not trying to upgrade over RC etc).
Yes, the drive was empty to start with.
Honestly it seems like the Mac Pro is generally refusing to boot from any Windows disc. Things I've tried since my initial post:
    - Loaded Windows 7 Install disc into my room mate's windows PC... loaded up fine, got to install screen
    - Tried his OEM copy of Windows Vista 32-bit, same issue
At this point it seems like maybe some kind of firmware issue or some kind or graphics driver issue, but I'm pretty much grasping at straws at this point. It doesn't seem like it's even getting to the point where hard drives or anything matters.
It does recognize that I have a Windows 7 install disc inserted when I use the boot selector/startup disk chooser.
Thanks for the ideas, I'll try those out and see if any of them help,
    -Andrew

  • Bootcamp Win7 - won't boot from Windows partition or even from the Win7 install DVD

    Late 2011 Mac Mini / Lion / Win 7 64-bit Home Premium.
Incumbent Windows partition has happily run for heavy gaming (World of Warcraft) for some eight months.  Now it stops on boot-up before the Windows logo is displayed, with a very dark blue blank screen.  Attempts to boot from the Windows Install DVD yield the same result, portending that there is more than a corrupt MBR at work here.  I have reset PRAM and SMC, just for good measure.  There have been no recent changes to hardware / peripherals.
Rebuilding the Windows partition with Bootcamp stops at same Dark Blue Screen of Death.  Will start Windows sometimes from first switch-on / dead cold Mini, but then not again in the same day.  OS X Lion mode runs perfectly, booting up as usual with no quirks or delays.
Hardware?  Seems unlikely, except for that suspicion of starting from the dead-cold start.

Do not use a USB3 flash drive. Only USB2 flash drives are supported by Windows installers. Depending on whether your Mac came with a built-in Optical drive or not, you may also need a physical DVD.
Please see How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support and Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support.
