Win7 on a separate disk

I'd like to install Win7 on one of my 4 internal drives. The Bootcamp installation guide describes the process of partitioning, and then installing on that partition, but what about just installing on an unpartitioned HD? Also, the installation guide does mention that if you're going to go this route, that you should remove all the other drives. Is there a technical reason for that, or are they just trying to minimize the chance of someone mistakingly writing over an important drive?

Windows doesn't want to install if there are drives using GPT.
You actually can just boot from Windows 7 DVD and proceed (with other drives removed).

Generally, it's ok to install on two machines as long as they are both yours and you only use one version at a time.

  • Installing boot camp on a separate disk

This is pretty basic, but I couldn't find an answer. Better to ask than to mess up an install:
The Installation & Setup Guide says that if you want to install on a separate disk, you should remove the drives in the lower numbered bays (then reinstall them later). The question is this: How do you run Boot Camp Assistant after you've pulled out the drives in the lower numbered bays? You can't pull them out while the power is on, of course, and you can't boot OSX when the drives are out. Do you first run Boot Camp Assistant, stop at some point, shut off the power, pull the drives, then install Windows?

There really is only one logical method, which you came to on your own.
Also, with Vista and 7, you don't need and there is nothing BCA does that is req'd when installing on non-OS X drive.
BCA is either crippled or so very limited that I don't use it. Say you want to use only 1/3 of that drive for Windows, it won't, or at least you have to repartition anyway in Windows 7 DVD. And BCA creates a FAT partition so you have to format that to NTFS anyway when you get to selecting where to install.

  • Can you play Diablo with the PC disk or is there a separate disk just for Mac?

Can you play Diablo with the PC disk or is there a separate disk just for Mac?

    Hi DJNIKKo,
I have the Diablo III install DVD - it's both Mac & PC install.
But warning - many players (on a PC board) dislike the game & stopped playing it already...
I played thru all the chars on 'normal' and started playing the 2nd difficulty, but running away (=being chased) by enemies is NOT my style of playing a game...
Check some youTube videos & see if that's what you want to do...
The ratio of hit points (HP) for enemies is:
    1. normal - 20 HP
    2.nightmare - 6000 HP
    3.**** - 150 000 HP
    4.inferno - 1 000 000 HP
This is for the same enemy...
(I have the Diablo 3 walkthru guide).
So this game is't for me...

  • Is there a way to combine two backups on separate disks created by time machine into one on a single disk?

Is there a way to combine two backups on separate disks created by time machine into one on a single disk? One backup is a continuation of the other and was created when I rec'd a message that the 1st disk was full. I'm using a iMac (late 2010) and both external drives are WD. Thanx.

With the timeline selected, go to File/Export/Movie and export each as a DV-AVI video.
You can then combine those AVIs into a new project with virtually no loss of quality.

  • Does run Mac OS X from external disk will damage Win7 installed at internal disk?

    Hi,
When I buy a Mac Mini Server 2011, I replace the Mac OS X Lion bootable disk with a SSD and install Win7 64, the other internal disk is also used by windows.
Now I need write some code in Mac OS using XCode, I assembling the Mac OS X Lion bootable disk with a USB disk shell and plug in Mac Mini's USB port, when I power on the machine and press the ALT key, the firmware show the Max OS disk, but I stoped.
I want to know if I boot into Mac OS, will it damage the Win7 disk? Can I apply OS patch or upgrade firmware?
    Thanks in advance!

Does run Mac OS X from external disk will damage Win7 installed at internal disk?
Of course not.  Why would it?

  • OK to copy Win7 (Home Premium SP1) disk to external hard drive?

The MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS for Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
    say:
    10. BACKUP COPY.
    a. Media.If you acquired the
software on a disc or other media, you may make one backup copy of the media. You may use it only to reinstall the software on the licensed computer.
That tells about backing up the installation media.
What about "backing up" the Windows disk itself, by copying a mirror image it to an (portable) external hard drive, similar to what's mentioned in
According to Malmition's November 12, 2012 Making a copy of Windows disk - Microsoft technical link request
    post on this forum:
I work with an engineer that feels he constantly needs to restore his windows 7 drive to its original state.
He does this by have a copy of his c drive - it is not an image and he is not using any imaging software - just a flat copy of his c drive.
When we wants to start over he formats his drive, boot from a thumb drive, and copies the c drive back.
This is working fine for him.
I've watched him do the copy back and forth so I see he's not using anything to image like ghost, acronis, etc
I thought you couldn't just copy your windows drive?
I'd like to do something similar.
Is that allowed by the Win7 Home Premium SW license terms?
    Thank you.
    - Russell J (USA)

Sorry to say: Try to solve real problems.
Major drawback: You have not specified what license you have. Specification Win7 Home Premium is not enough.
    1. Do not compare installation content on DVD and that of on hard disk. Installation disk contains packed files for your Windows. Sector by sector copy of HDD is NOT the same as what you can find on install DVD. From the point of law, the backup use (native,3rd
pty or by DD sector by sector) is legal, if you use it for restoration of Windows on HDD for the same computer, if you have ONE license.
    2. No one could object the situation, when you are backing multiple times (full, incremental,... backup)
    3. You cannot discuss c: drive only, because there is another partition that is important, namely hidden system partition. (Minimum of two partitions). License should cover the whole disk, not boot partition only.
    4. There are special rules for OEM, multilicenses, ... I have created system image that I distributed on many computers, because of I used special licenses that allow for multiple use in lab environment (Campus License, MSDN Academic Alliance, Dreamspark)

  • How do you install a Mavericks domain on two separate disks ?

    Hello troubleshooters and setup saviours,
We are a school with 200+ users on an OD managed on a Mac Pro server.
We decided to migrate to Mavericks, in order to fix several AFP binding bugs, from a 10.8 with server Apps.
We decided to give our server a SSD boost, and successfully installed the OS on this disk, with the server Apps and domain users.
So now, our system is on the SSD drive, and we want the network homes on a separate Hard Drive.
The problem occured when we tried to create the old users folders on our server, using the server manager and workgroup manager gave the same result.
Upon creation of the homes, a big amount of phantom data appeared on our system's disk.
We had 100 GB of unspecified, unlabeled, unverifiable data created on this disk, and since it's a 128 GB disk, the system hang and the server crashed.
We tried to find it with "du", and even the monitoring tools in Mavericks, but nothing helped, and this data seems to be nowhere.
Did anybody manage to install an OD domain on two disks ?
Thank you for your time and support,
    L. Renard

Swap is managed automatically and is stored on the boot volume in /private/var/vm
/private/var would not normally show up in /Volumes
/Volumes is normally used to hold entries for either additional or external disks, or network volumes. The boot volume is however also listed so the following
    /Volumes/Macintosh HD/private/var
would normally represent /private/var on the boot volume.
What in /private/var is the area using up all the space? You can use the following command in terminal to list a break down
    du -h /path/to/folder
you might want it to only list one level down which you can do as follows
    du -h -d1 /path/to/folder
    e.g. du -h -d1 /Volumes/"volume"/private/var

  • SAN partitions vs separate disks

    Hi all,
We're currently on a SAN that has individual disks for the OS, for the oracle software, and for the datafiles of the various databases. We are planning to move to another SAN that will have 1 large lun presented to the OS. As i understand it, this lun will have multiple RAID disks (running either RAID 1 or RAID 10) underneath it. The engineers said that to get individual file systems, i would then use the OS to partition this large lun. Because of the disks behind it, they claim that this shouldn't affect I/O, even though the partitioning will be done at the OS level.
In terms of multiplexing redo logs, control files, and in terms of keeping the OS/oracle software separate from the datafiles, does anyone know if this layout will be the same as having individual disks? Also, is it accurate that I/O will not be an issue for Oracle with this type of configuration?
Thanks in advance for any insight into this, since i'm pretty clueless in terms of SAN storage, etc. Let me know if you need any other info for this!

Can be done. From a Linux perspective.. You can partition a LUN and use one partition for OCFS2, another for ext3 and another for ASM.
There are however limitations. You can only have 4 primary partitions on a LUN. A LUN can only be a certain size due to limitations of the SAN (e.g. around 146GB with the vendor SAN we're dealing with).
A single LUN is also all an all-eggs-in-one-basket situation. Multiplexing and mirroring are pretty much useless in this case.
As far as I/O is concerned.. this should not (I believe) make I/O worse. After all, whether using 50 LUNs or a single LUN, all that I/O goes through the same HBA and same fibres (or wires) that connects the server to the SAN.
Personally, I would not accept this SAN config. I would insist on using a local disk for the root file system (else how the hell do you get the server to boot when there is a SAN problem or a HBA driver issue or something similar?). I would also insist on at least 2 LUNs in order to mirror the OCR and voting disks. (however, for the latter you need 3 locations and not just 2 as is the case with OCR)
PS. Do not let the SAN/LUN side of things confuse you. From an o/s perspective that is simply just another SCSI device. And you should treat it the same way. In other words, when something does not make sense with a normal SCSI device, it is likely to also make no sense when that device is a LUN.

  • Win7 recovery without recovery disks

Being a bit of a fool i ignored the "make backup disks" prompts.
Ive deleted the original windows 7 install in favour of windows 8 but after finding issues with playing certain games in win8 i would like to be able to put win7 back on it
My hard drive still has the recovery partition but pressing f11 at bios screen does nothing
is there anyway to recover my pc back to the original setup without recovery disks?
    This question was solved.

    Hello Dundeemanny:
Sorry you need to use recovery disks and I belive F-10 or F-12 are recovery keys. It will tell you in the blue window when you first turn on your computer. When you installed Windows 8 it wipes out everything. That was why you had issues playing games. Because it wiped out your orginal drivers. HP hasn't developed the drivers for windows 8. I hope you made a set if not they do not cost much from HP's Parts store. The ones you get from store have every thing more disks come with the set. F-2 is bios F-8 is safe mode. Please click on Kudos if this resolves your issue. Thank you frrw.

  • Does Lion support having the applications folder and the User folders on a separate disk (other than the startup disk)?

Is it possible to Install Lion while having the Application Folder and/or the User Folder on separate drives (other than the startup disk)  Leopard didn't really support this as it would have errors with e-mail and other services that where not stored directly on the startup disk.

It's possible, but don't put the Applications folder elsewhere, and keep at least a miminal Admin account on your startup drive (so you can still log on to do troubleshooting, etc., if there's a problem with the other drive).
Many apps are expected to be in the Applications folder on the OSX drive; they may not work on a different drive and/or may not be found or updated when updates are available.  Apple and Adobe apps, especially, are subject to this.  Don't put them in folders, either, as similar things may happen.
Besides, apps don't take up much space anyway, it's the data that may.
It's often better to keep the home folders on the OSX drive, but put large data folders on a separate drive, such as iPhoto, iTunes, or large video collections.

  • Dual boot windows 7+archlinux on separate disks; grub errors. [solved]

    Hello,
I am very excited to try arch linux, but am having trouble with the
installation.  My situation is as follows:  I have 3 hard drives: windows 7
lives on sda and sdb.  I am installing arch on sdc, which is 500GB.
I partitioned the hard drive as follows (which may look kind of ridiculous,
but please understand I am new at this):
    sdc1    /boot    1GB    ext2
    sdc2    swap    8GB     swap
    sdc3    /       50GB    ext3
    sdc4    /home   400+GB  ext3
After some initial issues, I managed to run the installation program
smoothly, performed the basic configuration, and then went to install grub. I
scrutinized the grub menu.lst file over and over, and could not find anything
wrong.  It had the following entry for archlinux:
    title: Arch Linux
    root: (hd2,0)
    kernel: /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdc3 ro
    initrd: /kernel26.img
There is no entry for windows, as I can just use the BIOS boot menu to switch
between the two bootable hard disks, or at least that was my plan...
When I boot to windows, everything works just fine.  When I go to the
BIOS boot menu and choose to boot from the third disk, I get the grub
bootloader with choices of arch and arch fallback, just as expected.
I select the former, and I get the following message from grub:
    Booting 'Arch Linux'
    root    hd(2,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdc3 ro
    Error17: cannot mount selected partition
The same thing happens for the fallback image.  I made very sure to install
    grub to the mbr, /dev/sdc.
I have also tried to use the UUID entry for /root in the menu.lst file, and
this gives the exact same results.  I have also run grub interactively from
the bootable CD image, and it does not give such errors-  it knows that
hd(2,0) has type 82, and not 7.  However, when I try the initrd command in
interactive grub, I get a complaint about the image not fitting in memory.
However, I have 16GB of ram...
One other note that may be (but probably is not) relevant:  initially I could
not get the Arch disk to recognize the hard drive (the format disk phase of
installation would always fail), so from windows, I went to the disk manager
and formatted it with ntfs.  This enabled me to format the disk from the arch
install process and install the new FS.  I didn't think the temporary presence
of ntfs would be any kind of an issue since I immediately reformatted it.
Many thanks for your time reading this.  Much appreciated.

  • Qosmio X500/00X System Recovery (Factory Reset) From Hard Disk Drive or Separate Disk

    Hey Guys,
Looking for your advice and any links if any...cheers in advance
    My Situation
    In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J
At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.
It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
    My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slow
I need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
    The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached
I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba
    My Questions
Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?
Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)
Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?
Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 from so I can make a recover disk??
    Notes
Tried to email Toshiba support but at step 1 of their email process validation failed due to my PC being out of warranty so will call them on Monday instead
THANK YOU THANK YOU, for any help you can give big ro small
    Cheers
    Rick

WOW, thanks Macius for that great, full and thorough reply...cheers mate
I suspected I didn't have a recovery partition - so thanks for confirming it as I planned to risk it and try! I guess it doesn't really matter why, and it would be futile to go and blame the re-seller or Toshiba at this late stage in the game in hopes they would help...
Yeah, I just went to Microsoft Software Recovery hoping to download Win 7 OS and create a recovery disk but of course Microsoft would NOT allow it due to it being software that was pre-installed on the device blah blah blah (see error image)
And I didn't bother back then in 2009 to create recovery media as you wisely descibed, mostly due to laziness and mentally putting it in the 'too hard basket'...I didn't really understand it - or much about computers at the time.
Re - your Option #2 - thanks for confirming Toshiba drivers. I could/can do this - but don't really want to buy something I already have, perhaps I'll check out ebay or see if a friend has a disk
Re - your Option #1 - I'm currently based in Vietnam and wont be back in Oz till late in the year, so will see if I can find a reliable Toshiba service provider here - but wont hold me breath on this one
I'm thinking that IF Option #1 is a No-Go then - maybe Plan B or Option #3 could be:
Do an Audit of Programs to identify those I don't need and can safely remove - then remove using Control Panel/ Remove Programs tool
Reformat all other drives (not C:// where OS is)
    Then use some re-partition software e.g. Disk-Partiton.com
    Any final thoughts???
Anyhow - thanks very much again
    Rick

You'll lose some quality since its already been compressed but yes there is software that allows you to import back into iMovie via QT in addition to the great link Len provided above:
