Win7 Upgrade Success... Almost

Well, after my initial attempts to install all of the HP Win 7 updates and having numerous problems that many have posted I decided to restore my system to the point just after the upgrade.  I then went in and uninstalled all of the HP software that required updates and rebooted. I then manually installed each update and everything has worked perfectly since, with one exception.
For some reason, the HP Wireless Assistant says my WLAN is disabled, even though it is actually working.  I also have noticed that even though I use a wireless N router and the signal and connect speed say they are strong, my downloads are painfully slow.  I know the Wireless Assistant is an issue that others have had as well, but I can't find a solution that works for me. I am wondering if this can also be causing the speed issues.  I will next check out DSL Reports to check my speed.  Other than that although the upgrade process was a long and painful process it all is working now.

  • Server services won't upgrade successfully

    Greetings,
I am attempting to upgrade an intel XServe from 10.5.8 to 10.6. I have attemped a few different processes to achieve a successful result. The issue is that not all the services are upgrading successfully. Initially I cloned the 10.5 system to the 2nd internal drive and attempted an upgrade -- failed. Secondly I attempted a clean install and migration from the 1st drive and again attempted migration from a time machine backup -- failed and failed. In each instance the iChat service and Web services failed to upgrade and only a limited number of groups and users were migrated (the system has 77 users and 21 groups in addition to the built-ins). The system contains 2 dual-core processors, 4gb memory, 2 internal drives and a fibre channel card to an XServe RAID.
    Any suggestions?

I have never had success upgrading a server. There are just enough changes with each version that it usually ends up not working or hobbled by some mysterious corruption. Really the surest and most reliable solution is to do a manual setup and importation. Not a pleasant prospect in the short run, but the best bet for happiness in the long haul.
Export the users, groups, and computer groups from the Workgroup Manager (not computers unless you do not bind them to the domain), exporting the settings of your server in Server Admin (File->Export->Service Settings) as references only (consider screen shots if you prefer)!  Set up the new server from scratch, adding each service manually as needed matching the settings from the 10.5 server as appropriate.
Set up all your shares again, etc so they are identical to the way they were in the old server.
In Workgroup Manager import the users, then groups, computers (if you don't bind them to the domain) and computer groups.
Since this process does not include user passwords, you will need to select all users (except the diradmin) and enter a default password. Then require a password change at next login under Advanced->Options... in Workgroup manager. If you are not using OpenDirectory, then I cannot speak to user password management issues.

    Hi:
Try installing the Vista driver from your notebook's support and driver page and see if that fixes the issue.

  • After upgrading successfully to 10.0.2 and 11, when I restart the next day, 3.6.28 opens. Please advise

using xp SP3. This has occurred every day since upgrading to the new versions. Able to upgrade successfully and use for the rest of the day. Then, after shutdown at night and upon restart in AM, older version opens.

Nothing has solved this issue. Each day I download and upgrade to the latest version directly from Mozilla. I install one add-on (Morning Coffee, which I have used for years). It updates sucessfully and I use FF with no issues the rest of the day. Then, in the morning, I am back to 3.6.28 (when I open FF, it begins by telling me my current/updated Morning Coffee is incompatible with 3.6.28).
    I have tried
    * deleting 3.6.28 completely before upgrading
*disabling my AVG Free before downloading & upgrading (enabling it again after the upgrade)
    *using no back up software
*not downloading & installing the Morning Coffee add-on
Would love assistance solving this! Thanks in advance....

  • Satellite L500-126: Win7 upgrade -can I re-activateit after new installation?

I successfully upgraded Windows 7 from my OEM Vista yesterday.
What if in the future, I need to reinstall the whole system?
Can I re-activate Win 7 after the new installation?
PS. My OEM Vista is 64 bit version and my win 7 is the ultimate 64 bit upgrade version
    THX

I hope I understand your question right so here is what I know about it:
When you upgrade original preinstalled Vista you don't need to activate Win7 but if you make clean Win7 installation then you must activate preinstalled version.
With other words to have activations-free Win7 you must install Vista at first using Toshiba recovery DVD and then upgrade it to Win7.

  • I have been unable to upgrade for almost a year. The upgrade loads partially, but won't complete.

I'm on Mac OS 10.6.7, computer is about a year and a half old. I think I may have had one successful upgrade very early on, to 3.5.2. Every time I've tried to upgrade since then, it starts but won't complete. It's getting to the point where this has got to be upgraded, and I simply can't get it to move. I've noticed Firefox has been crashing, which it almost never used to do. Help!!

If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • Quick launch buttons and touch functions not working post win7 upgrade

I have several problems that I think are related.
    1) When I rotate the screen and then bring it close (as in flat) to the keyboard, the screen goes blank. There is no key combination I can find that restores the screen. Putting it back in notebook orientation doesn't do anything either. Only thing to do is a hard reboot.
    2) the quick launch buttons on the screen edge are not functioning as follows:
    a) the hp mediasmart button (the one with the wave) doesn't work
    b) the screen rotation button produces the same problem as 1) above
    c) the third button which looks like either gears or a sun (I don't know what it should do) brings up the windows mobility center, where I have found problem number:
    3) On tablet PC settings, the display tab, there is one display: 1. mobile PC display
on the same tab, there is a setup button. The next screen says:
    pen input
    touch input
Regardless which one I select, on the following screen (where it says Press this screen with ....) when I press with either my finger or the pen, nothing happens. Which seems like either:
it thinks another screen is active or
the touch components are completely non functional.
    4) Not surprising, the touch functions are completely non-functional
I have installed all of the drivers for this TX2-1025dx for Win7(64bit) per the HP support/drivers page.
Not all of them resulted in a clean install.
Here are other drivers that I had problems with (meaning that I got an error message, it failed, it had to be done more than once, something else broke, etc.)
AMD AHCI  - started catalyst installer then failed
Authentic fingerprint driver - "dpinst64 not marked for installation"
Ntrig Duosense - had to do this one multiple times to get the fingerprint reader to work
HP Mediasmart MVP - hung in CMD
I have checked that all of the startup services are actually enabled in msconfig including quick launch buttons, hpwuschd, and media smart. Nothing is disabled in services.
I have reinstalled the quick launch buttons driver for this product from December 2009. (There is an earlier version from November.)
I installed the bios upgrade (before win7, actually) it is currently F.25
I have also eliminated EMF possibilities.
I have searched the forums, and while I have found some interesting clues, I don't see anything like this - at least with a solution.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as this thing is quite useless to me as it currently functions. It is not a tablet anymore.
    TIA

    [knock knock] Helloooooo??!!??
Installed 6.50.9.1, which is in between the last two quick launch button (QLB) drivers (that did not work). Also fixed the lightscribe and mediasmart DVD installs. Same problems, no touch or pen, and a new bug I discovered with qlb
First, if you search for tablet in the start menu, there is a selection to set the tablet buttons to perform certain tasks. When you run that, it says that teblet buttons are not installed on this pc. Doesn't matter if QLB is installed or not - same error. Hmmmmm. Check with your pc manufacturer..... I think I am doing that. I am starting to feel like I am working for HP.
Next finding: Using mobility center, I found that if you orient the screen to landscape for the slate config, and then rotate the screen, it does not go blank. However, if you rotate the screen back to notebook, it goes blank. And of course it keeps that upsidedown config when you reboot, too. So, the way to recover from that (because you really need a keyboard if you don't have a working pen and touch takes 30 sec to respond) is to keep trying to get touch to orient the screen back to landscape for notebook. Then rotate the screen to landscape for notebook. And uninstall the QLB driver that doesn't work and reboot. But after that, touch and pen did not function.
Since touch and pen had previously been restored when I uninstalled QLB, I reinstalled MVP and smartmenu coz they were the actions that I took the last time before touch and pen returned. Didn't work this time, tho.
I decided to do a system restore back at the point that I had used HP Advisor, since that was the last time I made note that pen and touch were working. Restore failed because a sfi.dat file was not found (and search didn't find it anywhere either). I tried 5 different restore points, before and after that one, and they all failed. But the first time around, I had touch on the logon screen, just not after windows started. The next time, I had touch but not pen. The next time, I had touch and pen, but only for a period of time (I think HP Advisor may have been the intervening event) before they stopped working.
Oh, and HP advisor does not appear to be actually installing the things on the action list. That could be an issue with Comodo, but it really looks more like an issue with that "mother may I" message from Windows asking for permission to run the program. Often as not, windows reports that the program is not responding. Closing the program with that dialog box actually gives it the kick in the knickers it needs to complete.
A not so great workaround is to use the mobility center to orient the screen when you want to put the thing in slate mode. You can pin it to the task bar (with a little fiddling).  Touch is extremely slow to respond in slate mode. For example, it took about 3 minutes to get the screen oriented back around to notebook config, which is 4 "clicks" if things are working right. Pen works sort of OK (although I haven't tried any writing) . Gestures for scrolling do not work.
I am done with the troubleshooting until someone comes up with other targeted ideas.I have been keeping detailed chrono notes.
Again, I hope the information here leads to a solution. This unit is not a functional tablet and I don't want to stay with Vista, neither should I have to since this is supposed to be compatible.

  • Re-partitioning hard drive, XP to Win7 upgrade

Realizing that my existing XP Boot camp (3.0.1) partition was not going to be large enough for Win7, I deleted my existing partition along with my XP installation.
    Two issues
1- I now cannot partition my newly un-partitioned hard drive in Boot Camp. I got some message about the memory already being used, and the need for a journaled format.
According to Disk Utility, my HD format is Mac os extended (journaled). My RAID type is Mirrored RAID type.
Any ideas how to get my disk to partition? I did zero out all the free space on the drive before trying to partition.
2- To get to Win7, do I now have to reinstall XP, upgrade Boot Camp to 3.1, install Win7?
Another problem I seem to have is that i bought an Upgrade version of Win7. Is that going to work for me?
Thanks in advance for any help. NEIL

    Hi Neil,
1- I removed my previous boot camp partition. My Mac HD is mac osx extended (journaled). raid type is mirrored raid set, but raid size is 0 kb. What should my settings be, and where do i change them?
So you have a RAID set with Disk Utility but are not using it ?
What exactly is the 'layout' of your harddisks ?
If you don't use that once set RAID, it might be best to clean house right now and get rid of it.
Disk Utility can do this, but you have to backup your OSX first, since undoing a RAID deletes the content of the HDs/partitions in it.
2- in your post, you reference the following link within a thread http://codesociety.com/2008/10/23/boot-camp-cannot-partition-disk-files-could-no t-be-moved-error/ but this page is jibberish. Any other advice on what to do when boot camp cannot partition?
Sorry, seems that that page is gone for bad.
Like said, the BootCamp Assistant needs to find a free contigeous amount of diskspace of the size you specify in the BCA when partitioning.
That error you get implies that the BCA can not find it.
Have a look at my other posts in the thread I linked to, on how-to use an external harddisk and something like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your OSX back and forth to get the needed free diskspace for the BCA.

  • WP8.1 Upgrade Successful for Developer Preview Phones?

    Hey,all.
For you folks who installed WP8.1 early via the developer preview program with their Lumia 822 and Lumia 928 phones, did the WP8.1/Denim upgrade perform successfully without any hiccups?
    Just curious.
    Thanks in advance!

Since the Windows Phone calendar shortcomings is one of my favourite rants, and since I know that developers hate users, especially when they are right - can someone please forward the link below to the Windows Phone developers, so they know what I expect from a smartphone calendar regarding historical range and the amount of data?

  • Validity sensor/digital persona not working after win7 upgrade on dv3 2050ea

    Hi,
I have recently clean installed windows 7 after Vista onto a dv3 2050ea laptop. I used the HP downloads page to get all the new drivers for win7 including the validity sensor and digital persona package. Win 7 does not find a biometric sensor and I can't see where to launch digital persona from . What can I do ?
    thanks
    Alan

I just fixed this problem with my HDX 18,,,,,,I will walk you through the process that fixed my FP reader.
I upgraded from VISTA to WIN7, that was where the problem occured.
My PC DL'd the the updated Digital Persona Identity Protection Suite (DPIPS) program for WIN7 from the HP site.
There is a known incompatibility with this update from HP and WIN7.
The Validity Sensor Driver that detects the FP reader is the same for VISTA and WIN7 in my PC (check this first / update IF necessary).
    NEXT
    I went through the: START>Control Panel>Programs and Features>Digital Persona>Uninstall.
    Shut down and restart 2X.
I went back to the HP site and DL'd the DPIPS program for VISTA.
    RUN > DPIPS program.
UPDATE from the DPIPS Program (Version 4.11.3826) bypassing the the update from HP.
    Hope this works for you.

There were two problems, one is, as other mentioned, the fact that Win7 doesn't support INF installation by right-clicking, this however, didn't explain the devcon dp_add installation problem described in the original post, the resolution was to add the
following to the INF file, while this is not required when installing on Win8, IT IS mandatory when installing @ Win7
    [USB_Install.Wdf]
    KmdfService=WINUSB, WinUsb_Install
    [WinUsb_Install]
    KmdfLibraryVersion=1.11
I have spent half a day on hunting this down, having better logging information would greatly reduce the time it takes to resolve such problems, for example, By adding the name of the expected/missing section to the message "The
required section was not found in the INF"

  • TIPS for UPGRADING SUCCESSFULLY the FIRMWARE of your ROUTER

WARNING, before doing the UPGRADE, it is highly recommended to back-up the configurations of your router so that no matter what happened, you router configuration wouldn't be messed up and you can just automatically restore it (the firmware version upgraded to it will just retain).
    Here's how to:
    >open http://192.168.1.1
    >username: blank, password: admin
    >go to ADMINISTRATION TAB
    >under the managerment subtab or config management subtab, you will see BACK-UP & RESTORE
let me give you a very useful tips guys,
when updating the firmware of the router and prevent the firmware from bricking or being corrupted and get a very successful results you will need to set a static IP adress ( so you won't lose connection to the router when updating the firmware) and force the card to 10 half duplex (so your router won't reply unless all the packets when updating firmware has already ben set thoroughly to the router) of your PC prior to updating the firmware. then after the firmware, push the reset of your router for 10 sec. then redo the set-up.
You will also need to shut down the computers that are running wirelessly and disable antiviruses and firewalls that are running currently...
    here are the instructions:
ASSIGN A STATIC IP ADRESS ON YOUR PC:
go to your control panel [select classic view (click the option on the left side right below control panel title)]. select network connections...
under LAN or high speed internet, you will see local area connection. right click on it then select properties
under local area connection properties, look for internet protocol TCP/IP. high light it and click properties.
once on the internet protocol TCP/IP properties, set it to use the following IP adress.
IP adress: 192.168.1.5 ( it must be same range of your default gateway: 192.168.x.x)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (that is the default one. if not then enter the IP adress of your router, to check it, open command prompt, then type in "ipconfig" [no qoutes] the dafault gateway is equivalent to router's IP adress)
click ok and click the close button on the local area connectipn properties window (not the common "x" button when exiting out a window).
BRUTE FORCE THE CARD TO 10 Mbps half duplex mode
go to the same window (local area connection properties), once there, you will see a configure button. click it.
you will be lead to fast ethernet card 10/100 properties (depending on the type of etherenet card you have)
once there, click on the advance tab
under property, highlight link speed and duplex or media type or connection type (it varies, but these are one of those variations).
under value, select 10 Mbps/ Tx half mode/ duplex
click ok and click close on the local area connection window.
Then proceed with upgrading the firmware of your router. after updating the firmware of your router, reverse what you have done on your PC. by setting back the internet protocol TCP/IP to obtain an IP adress automatically and DNS server automatically (don't forget to click ok and close for the windows opened before opening a new one, okay?). then set back the speed and duplex mode back to auto-negotiation.
You should be able to get a successful results already after updating it. click on this link to reconfigure the router (but you must be online first to the modem since when the router is resetted, the configuration of your your router will be lost) http://www.linksysfix.com/check/HomePage/index.htm?CallerID=CC  to reconfigure the router

"a helping hand in a community makes the world a universe"

    Eh...
My routers GUI doesn't have the option to back up config so that doesn't help. Can't see why that would mater much anyway for home networking.
Also, I upgraded the firmware on my router multiple times and never had to force 10MB half duplex speeds. So, that doesn't help much either.

  • Presario CQ60 On-board microphone problem after Win7 upgrade

I upgraded my new Presario CQ60-409SA with the HP supplied Win7 DVD. Since then my on-board microphone has stopped receiving input. Plugging an in-line mic into the front jack works fine, but absolutely no response from the on-board one. I have checked that the mic is not muted. Dale in HP support centre suggested I uninstall the drivers and restart. This unfortunately did not work. Can anyone help? I am using the latest drivers from the HP site (SP-45166). Many thanks.

I'd REALLY love some help with this one. Is anyone from HP able to assist? Has anyone else had the same problem? The mic was fine in Vista, but the system just doesn't seem to pick up that it's there in Win7. External works fine. Any ideas????

  • D20 (4158) Win7 upgrade from pre-loaded Vista

I have a D20 preloaded with Vista Business and want to upgrade to Win7.  I noticed that the "ThinkStation Hardware Maintenance Manual ThinkStationHardware Maintenance Manual" (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/53y4348.pdf) lists Windows 7 x64 recovery discs as FRUs, presumably orderable from Lenovo.  Are these suitable for what I am intending to do (I would be doing a reformat-and-reinstall) or do I have to go with a boxed version purchased at a retailer?  The advantage of going with the recovery disc would be to get all appropriate drivers and branded help files.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

the recovery media is only available to machines shipped with windows 7. If you want windows 7, you would have to get the retail pack from major computer stores.
You can get all the appropriate drivers by installing the Thinkvantage System Update software after you install the retail pack of windows 7.
