Winclone backup of bootcamp

I have started to run Winclone to backup my BootCamp partition. It was running very slowly, so I decided to cancel the backup. But the cancellation was also running very slowly. So after waiting for a long time, I decided to force quit Winclone.
After a while I started Winclone again to do the backup, now every time I run Winclone to backup, I get the following in the log file. I am running Winclone 2.3, Mac OS X 10.6.8 on an iMac. What can I do to fix the problem? Do I need to clear something or reset something?
Thanks.

one backup method or set is not backed up good enough. As I did say CCC made bootable clones, not the same. I didn't say I didn't use TimeMachine now either did I. I do. Two. One that I run irregularly like monthly as a just in case.
Paragon Clone OS to SSD is handy but again won't help you.

  • Backup for Bootcamp partition

Is there a way to backup my bootcamp partition to TM? The TM application doesn't give alot of options other than to exclude things, but not to add.
If I look in TM backups of my computer, the "C" drive is not shown. When I look in TM to see if the C drive is being excluded, it is grey'd out, not offering the option to exclude OR include it. In documents/virtual machine, there is NOTHING. I read somewhere that the entire virtual machine is stored here which would make for easy backup, but it appears to be more of a 'document' storage folder (unless I am missing something hidden, but that doesn't appear to be the case).
I run my business AutoCAD through Fusion and would like to backup the system at least once a week, just for the mere fact of settings, etc. All other project and business data is stored on my iMac partition, which DOES back up through TM. Any suggestions??

Since you decided to use Fusion to work with a Bootcamp partition, you don't have Windows in a real Virtual Machine file. Parallels and Fusion can build their own virtual hard drives (really just files on the mac), with the OS, applications, and files on the Mac hard drive.
Apparently, you haven't used that option, but rather are using Fusion to work with a real MS-Dos partition that was created by Bootcamp. Time Machine can't work with a partition like this. I guess you decided to use Bootcamp for performance reasons, but it also means you will probably want to use a program like WinClone to back it up. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25932
In addition, if you do decide to use a Virtual Machine file to run windows instead of a Bootcamp partition, you will still probably want to exclude the VM file from the Time Machine backup because Time Machine will want to create a whole new copy of the entire VM file every time you use windows. I just manually copy the VM file to an external drive on occasion.

  • How to backup a bootcamp partition?

Will Winclone (or any other program) work under Lion to backup a bootcamp Windows partition?  I currently use Winclone 2.2 under Mac OS 10.6.8.  Also, is there anything else I need to know about my bootcamp partition before updateing to Lion?  Thanks!

I would think you could use Winclone to migrate the previous Boot Camp partition to a newly created BC partition on your new drive. You would go through the Boot camp procedure to the point of installing windows then quit Boot Camp installation. You should have a partition ready for the old installation.
Not having done this myself, you need to get in touch with Two Canoes software for expert sdvice.
    http://twocanoes.com/winclone/support
Paragon Software has been used successfully for backing up Winclone and they may be able to advise you as to their products capability to do this kind of migration.

You of course will need to have a way to connect the old hard disk with either an adapter or an enclosure.

  • Backup my bootcamp partition with time machine ?

I have read a few discussion about this subject here in Apple Support Communities but none of them was really new.
I read that it is not possible to backup my bootcamp partition by using time machine. Does anyone has any up to date ideas on how to make this work in the best possible way ? I am on os x 10.8.4 and I use bootcamp with windows 7. I want to abe able to backup all my osx data, all my bootcamp data + an external hard drive data that I use for my windows files.
    Alltogether in one hd.
    Thanks in advance.

Look at CopyCatX to do a whole drive backup. If you want to include an external hdd then get a large external drive and make two partitions, one for the Mac including Boot Camp backup  and one for the external hdd backup.

  • Restoring a windows ISO backup on Bootcamp Partition

    OS: 10.10.1
    Bootcamp Partition: Winblows 8.1 Pro
The History: hard crash... restore everything
Unable to restore from time machine.
Installed OSX Maverricks via Internet Recovery
Installed Windows 8.1 Pro via Boot Camp
Transfered Data from Thunderbolt External HD via Migration Assistant (Crashed twice, worked on third try)
I was able to get my stuff back in working order including Bootcamp To run windows... The trick was to install windows before importing data with migration assistant. Loading Windows would fail if I imported migration assistant data before hand.
The Problem: I have a windows backup 30gb ISO from before the crash that I want to load up. Has anyone performed this? is there a way to get my windows data re-installed into this machine?
Is it possible to load the System Restore into a USB and simply just re-installing the earlier date ISO?
any expertise in restoring my Windows Partition would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Backup Restore goes through all the prompts.
When it's at the step to start writing to the partition I get an error along the lines of it can't over write to that partition. I wish I had a screenshot of the error message.
My BootCamp Partition is 120GB so the 30GB ISO should extract no problem.
Either way, I think I am SOL
I dowloaded winclone 4.4 and that too was a catastrophic fail with a test partition.
There should be an easier way to back up and restore your BootCamp Partition. In todays day and age Software like TM should be able to image your entire system. All it's partitions, and give you the ability to restore everything to a certain point in time.
This has been a huge ordeal, I'm shocked that Yosemite, wouldn't even restore from Time machine. Looking through this forum, TM has a lot of issues in Yosemite. Thankful Migration Assistant at least gave me my data back (after two very worrisome crashes)

  • Trying to create backup of BOOTCAMP with New Disk Image

    Hi.
I am trying to automate backing up my BOOTCAMP partition. I thought automator might do it. I have it done but I have 2 problems.
    1) It prompts me for my password before it starts. Other folders don't ask me, how can I stop automator asking me when it is making disk image from BOOTCAMP?
    2) I get an error message Error code 28. See below. I have run this twice and get the same error message, same place each time. What is the problem.
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
    !http://www.silverstoneschoolsparking.co.uk/grandprix/bootcamp%20automator%20err or.jpg!

    Thanks JGG.
However, I see that development of Winclone has stopped which is a little concern.
Also I do not see how to automate it. Is that possible?
Can Winclone be added to Automator somehow, or back to the original question why is New Disk Image not happy creating an image of Bootcamp? I also tried selecting all the files/folders within Bootcamp instead of bootcamp itself, but that also fell over with same error message but at a different file.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner for backing up Macintosh HD on a schedule, but I really want something which can back up Bootcamp on a schedule, or by using automator. How can this be achieved? Thanks

  • Time machine Backup of bootcamp, Virtual Machine, and VM based on Bootcamp

I have read posts that contradict each other, so...
Does Time Machine backup Bootcamp? I think the answer is no.
Does time machine backup a Parallels Virtual Machine (bootcamp or other) as expected? I believe the answer is no, any changes to the VM will cause the entire VM to be backed up. So, I think you should do an occasional back up in time machine that includes all VMs, then set in VMs to not be backed up by time machine...right?
Are there any considerations of a Parallels VM for boot camp? For example, does it mater if you do windows update from the VM or the bootcamp? I think the answer is no, you can do anything from either and get the same results.
    thanks

  • Restoring Winclone to new BootCamp partition

I recently made a clone of my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation (its roughly about 14GB according to Finder/WinClone) so i made a 80GB partition on my 320GB drive and it gives me this error message:
the WinClone came from a 500GB internal drive and ive gotten winclone images to restore to a MBP before but not sure why its giving me this error code, anyway to restore the image to the new partition (which was created with Bootcamp) as i no longer have access to the old machine it was running on.
    thank you!

    Star1
Am a new Mac owner -& have successfully used BootCamp to partition and install my Windows XP.
Would like to clone for backing up - I would like to start with CCC to clone my Mac OS - and then use Acronis - (my old standby for XP) to clone my Windows. I would like to test by re-installing both Mac & XP clones - m biggest fear is that it won't work since they are 2 different operating systems.
What are you experiences with Winclone? I assume that it finds its former XP partition -re-installs - without touching the Mac partition (my biggest fear!!)

  • Time Machine Recovery Partition

    Hi,
I am using an external HDD as my TimeMachine.
I know that it had a Recovery Partition on it.
But I seem to have lost it after I erased/reformatted it.
i THINK I'd like it back: I mean it can't hurt, right?
I just reformatted it and have redone my TimeMachine backups because I did a repair and stopped it partway thru.
Needed to take my MacBook away.
    And corrupted the disk.
I thought better just start again.
But now I see it has done its first backup but I don't see a Recovery Partition on it.
I'm 100% there WAS one before I reformatted it and started over.
See copy of my diskutil list of BEFORE I reformatted.
I reformatted because I decided to get rid of the separate WinCloneBackup partition.
I was using it to store copies of my WinClone backups of BootCamp, but I've stopped that.
    Doing it on another HDD.
    Initial TimeMachine partition map:
    /dev/disk5
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk5
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk5s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Time_Machine_Home       3.8 TB     disk5s2
       3:                  Apple_HFS WinClone_Backup         200.0 GB   disk5s3
       4:                  Apple_HFS Recovery                16.0 GB    disk5s4
    Current Partition map:
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk2
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk2s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS TimeMachine_Home        4.0 TB     disk2s2
I thought Partition 4, the Apple Recovery, was added by TimeMachine???
Am on MacBook Pro 2012 with Mavericks.
If curious, I have a 1TB SSD Crucial plus a 1TB HDD WesternDigital on my MacBook.
So I thought I'd use a 4TH HDD for TimeMachine.
I also use CarbonCopyClone on a separate HDD to backup.
AND a separate HDD for TimeMachine at work.
    Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Alab

    Hi,
I appreciate the help here, and I'm not trying to be argumentative, but this really doesn't seem consistent to me.
The Terminal diskutil list command will list all partitions on any drive as far as I'm aware.
    Including recovery.
    Not so?
The posts on other threads seem to say that.
LowLuster, those are just Finder screenshots you've posted: I understand that the Recovery partition is usually hidden on Finder.
    But not on diskutil list.
I posted two diskutil list shots of my TimeMachine HDD: before and after.
The one BEFORE reformat showed a partitiion with "Recovery": Partition 4.
The one AFTER does not show that.
    For clarity I do again.
    Initial TimeMachine partition map:
    /dev/disk5
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk5
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk5s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Time_Machine_Home       3.8 TB     disk5s2
       3:                  Apple_HFS WinClone_Backup         200.0 GB   disk5s3
       4:                  Apple_HFS Recovery                16.0 GB    disk5s4
    Current Partition map:
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk2
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk2s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS TimeMachine_Home        4.0 TB     disk2s2
They are different disk numbers because the diskutil lists were done with different HDD connected.
So BEFORE I did the reformat, TimeMachine was disk5.
And AFTER the reformat it was disk2.
I booted up with the option key, and I only see the startup disk recovery option.
    Nothing from TimeMachine.
    See attached photo.
I see BootCamp (which doesn't work properly after Mavericks screwed up my partition, but I'm about to fix that.
    That's on another thread.
But that is why I want REALLY good backups in case something goes wrong.
I also attach sudo fdisk /dev/disk1 of the TimeMachine HDD.
    No Recovery partition.
You can see that only one of the GUID potential partitions has anything in it: Partition 1.
There is NOTHING from a Recovery partition.
And fdisk shows EVERYTHING: nothing is "hidden" from it.
    Alans-MacBook-Pro:~ arjarvis_mbp$ diskutil list

I just did a diskutil list for my CarbonCopyClone HDD, I know it has a Recovery partition (it gives you an option to make one).

There are TWO Recovery HD listed here: on my startup disk0 and on CarbonCopyClone disk3.
    And nothing for TimeMachine disk2.
So I'm still puzzled: how do I get TimeMachine to have a Recovery partition on it?
I definitely used to have one.

  • Has anyone sucessfully used the new Winclone 3.2 to backup and restore  Bootcamp partittion with Windows 7 Ultimate on MBP with Lion 10.7.3?

Bought late 2011 MBP 17" with Bootcamp partition (Windows 7 Ultimate) and Lion OS 10.7.3
I am trying to make a backup of Bootcamp partition before I start using my laptop but it proves to be a difficult task.
I don’t have any installation disk for Windows 7 and I am afraid that, if a disaster strikes and I loose the HDD, my copy of Windows will be gone.
The only way to restore Windows partition according to what I read so far is to do the following:
    • Use Windows to backup data from BootCamp Partition
    • Reinstall OS Lion formatting full hard drive in the process
    • Use BootCamp Assistant to create BootCamp partition
    • Install Windows 7 on bootcamp partion
    • Use Windows 7 to restore data from backup file created in the first step
The only problem is that I don't any image or disk to re-install Windows 7. With Windows 7 I can create only 'repair disk' (for what it is worth) or system image but according to other users it would format the whole drive including OS Lion partition when reinstalling
Winclone 3.2 seems like the answer to my prayers but would like to hear from the users if it worked for them (most imprtantly, did the restore work?).

Got the response from Winclone regarding my confusion in step 18 of the procedure to create bootcamp backup.  The message displayed on the screenshot under step 18 can be ignored.  It refers to creating a Windows partition using Boot Camp Assistant but in fact this partition has already been created in earlier steps using Disk Utility.
I bought Winclone 3.3 as it promises to make backup and restore of Bootcamp partition with Windows 7 on it really easy, the steps to do this task are easy and well documented, and the owner of the program was very prompt responding to my queries.
I performed the following as an insurance against disaster prior to creating Winclone image:
Since my Windows 7 came pre-installed but without any installation disk I used Windows 7 to create 'Windows 7 system image' . From what I read on forums the system image created using Windows 7 apparently can't be used to easily restore Boot Camp partition (as it wipes out OS X in the process).  I created this image as a last resort backup rescue - some users reported that it can be used to recover Windows but the process is painful and involve a number of steps, swapping hard drives, and paid software to assist in the process.  I did not bother to make notes on this process - thanks to Winclone I am not suppose to need this backup if everything works as promised
I also created 'Windows 7 repair disk' prior to running Winclone.  Not sure what the value of it will be but again, this is something I did just in case I need it in the future
Then I installed Winclone 3.3 and created Windows 7 Ultimate Boot Camp image without any problems (on MBP running Lion 10.7.4).  My Winclone image file of 150GB Windows 7 Boot Camp partition prior to installing any programs and without any data on it ended up being nearly 8GB (saved to the external USB HDD).
I have not restored and don't plan to restore the Winclone 3.3 image just to test if it works (don't want to risk loosing my perfectly well running Windows 7 in case of any disaster).  So ultimately only time or experience of other users will tell me if I spent my money well buying Winclone 3.3.  I  know it worked for you JBLTZ so hopefully it will work for me when I need it one day.
    Cheers
    Swavek

  • Accessing an iPhone backup from OSX using Bootcamp with XP

    Hi guys,
Something has gone horribly wrong with the OSX partition on my Macbook Pro. It seems like something has become corrupted, and I can no longer reboot into OSX. I can however continue to use my XP partition and can access all my files from there. I'm planning on eventually backing up all the data, and just doing a complete reinstall but I'm heading off to the states from the UK in 10 days and need to restore my iphone to a backup I had on the mac partition - it contains all my US contacts and data. Is there any way I can access the backup via bootcamp?
    Thanks,
    James.

sure navigate to the path and copy out the files

  • Bootcamp partition shows up as grey "disk0s4" in Disk Utility

    Hello everyone,
So I am a few days into this tiring and discouraging process of trying to get my iMac back to it's original working state. Here's to hoping for a solution:
Ever since I bought my iMac, I've been running OSX Mountain Lion with Win7 installed through BootCamp, without any problems. I recently wanted to increase my Boot Camp partition size from 80GB to 149GB because I was running low on disk space, and that was the start of many problems to come.
    Here's what I tried first:
Make a backup copy of my OSX partition through Disk Utility's "Restore" tab (onto external HD 1)
Make a backup copy of my Windows partition through "Create a system image" in Windows Control Panel (onto external HD 2)
Use WinClone to backup a copy of my Windows partition
Erase Boot Camp partition in Disk Utility
Resize Mac OS partition to max
Create new FAT partition (149 GB)
Restore WinClone backup to the FAT partition (hoping it'll "fill up" the remaining free space)
I don't remember all the details, but all of this led to Windows not being able to boot properly, and then soon after, OS X wouldn't work either. The built-in Recovery HD somehow became unusable and showed up as grey in Disk Utility (too chaotic to remember how). After much trial and error, I was left with the Mac's built in Internet Recovery option, which I used to reinstall OS X Mountain Lion (on top of the existing Mac partition). Afterward, I regained the Recovery HD, and resized the Mac OS X partition to cover over the unusable free space that remained.
    After that:
Ran Boot Camp Assistant to start the Windows installation process from scratch.
After the installation finished, I used "System Image Recovery" from a bootable Windows Recovery USB that I created.
Upon restart, Windows would not boot (which was fixed using the bootrec commands within Command Prompt off the USB).
This allowed Windows to boot fine, and it was exactly as it was before this all began.
Now, here are my current problems.
I believe the simplest way to achieve my original goal of extending my Windows partition would be to use Paragon's Camptune X, but upon running it, it tells me it can't find any Bootcamp configuration on my system.
While both OSX and Windows appear on the Startup Manager when I hold down the "option" key (which boot and run just fine), the "BOOTCAMP" partition that I would normally see in Disk Utility (under Macintosh HD) is now listed as "disk0s4", is grey, and "unmounted". It's also listed as MS-DOS (FAT), while it shows up as NTFS within Windows.
The Startup Disk preference pane lists Macintosh HD as the only choice.
I'm exhausted from the past week of repeated backup/reinstallations and trying to make this work. I've done my share of research and reading related forum threads, with no real solution. I am hoping "The hatter" will see this, as he's offered much info/advice on this topic on these boards, but I still haven't been able to resolve this issue.
Thanks for reading, anyone have any ideas?

By using Disk Utility to try to resize your Bootcamp partition you messed up your hard disk. You need to backup all your data from the disk, eraze and format your disk, and reinstall OSx, then if you want a new Bootcamp partition run Bootcamp Assistant.
Next time you want to resize the Bootcamp partition use CampTune, not Disk Utility.

  • Windows Bootcamp no longer bootable

    Hi,
I installed windows XP onto my MacBookPro about six months ago and everything was working fine.  I haven't used it for a couple months.  I decided I wanted to use Windows today and when I turned on my computer and held down the alt/option key, it didn't load anything (usually it displays "MACINTOSH HD" and "BOOTCAMP"), so I had to turn on my computer again and just use the apple.  I repaired all disk permissions and verified the disk on the MACINTOSH HD volume and everything is okay.  I can't do anything with the BOOTCAMP volume on disk utility.
I also went into System Preferences and Startup Disk, and it does not display the Bootcamp partition as a startup volume, only Macintosh HD and "network startup"
What has gone wrong and how can I get my Windows to function again?
    Thank you.

I used to have XP on a MacBook Pro and experienced the same problem. My only solution was a Winclone backup that I used to replace the faulty XP.  With Win 7 you can start from the install DVD and use system recovery to perform startup repair, system restore, and some other remedies. I do recall that this was not possible with an XP install disk.
If you do not have a replaceable backup then you will most likely have to reinstall from the start. Before doing this consider going to Windows 7 as XP is as obsolete as Mac OS 9.

  • How to clone Boot Camp partition when Winclone does not work

The hard drive in my MacBook Pro is failing. It has 2 partions, one for Apple and the other is a Bootcamp with Windows 7.
I tried repairing it with Disk Utility, which did not work. I also ran DiskWarrior, which resulted in the error message: "Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure". I was able to copy my Apple files through DiskWarrior although there were a couple of errors.
My question is how to clone my Bootcamp Partition. I tried making an image with Disk Utility but it failed. I also tried using Winclone and it failed indicating there were hard drive issues.
Is there another way to try to copy the Bootcamp partition? I can boot to Apple so running a program/app or trying UNIX commands might work.
    Thank you in advance.

Some previous forum comments I have collected regarding backup of BootCamp.
Acronis 2011 w/ plus pak, didn't work well previously
    Ghost 15 - probably not
Casper 6 works for Windows on Boot Camp only
CopyCatX is more lengthy and sector copy so takes the longest.
Paragon Hard Drive Suite 2011 because it works great and they have CampTune
Windows 7 system backup and restore - Apple's goofy HFS read-only interferes with system and file backup.
I have also used Casper, Clonezilla and Paragon but less regularly, Casper failed a few times, I stopped using it, Clonezilla worked but took forever (for me) Paragon (which I have only used twice) was the best but my sample is limited.
I have restored from DU, CCC, SuperDuper and TM, they all worked, TM was slower but not a lot, you can boot from the others, which I prefer.
Paragon HDM 2011 can do either offline or online backups, the difference is that with an offline backup, the entire partition (or disk) is unallocated. In an online backup, the backup utility is running against a partition that may be making changes to itself. When you run CCC or SD! in OS X, you're running an online backup. However, I would recommend (at least for the first backup) that you boot from the HDM recovery CD to do an offline backup. This will ensure that you have an *exact* copy of the parition/disk.
I tried the native Windows backup utility.  It worked to backup and restore my Windows partition, but I noticed a "bad" side effect.  When I would restore a Windows Backup to my HD, it would corrupt my MacOS boot partition, so I would then have to restore the Mac partition as well.
Winclone allows you to migrate your Bootcamp partition from one Mac to another Mac and make sure Windows will boot. However, if the processor (for example, Core Duo or i7) is a different type, the restored version of Windows may not be supported or be able to run on the new Mac. If you are migrating between Macs that are the same type (MacBook Air to MacBook Air, for example), you will have the greatest chance of success. You can try to restore Winclone images between different types of Macs (for example, a Mac Pro to a Mac Mini), but be aware that if Windows boots but does not reach the desktop, it is probably not an issue with Winclone, but rather the change in processor type.

  • Does Winclone still work to restore a Boot Camp partition?

I have a 50GB Boot Camp partition, NTFS file system, with Windows XP. My computer is a Mac Pro running OS X 10.6.5. I have been using Winclone to clone the Boot Camp partition as a backup. I know that Winclone is no longer supported, and have heard that Winclone may not work properly with Snow Leopard.
I have no problem creating an image of the Boot Camp partition using Winclone. I have not yet had to do a restore to a new partition, but assume that some day I may need to do so.
My question is: Has anyone running Snow Leopard successfully used Winclone to restore a Boot Camp partition?
A secondary question: Is there any other utility, running on the Mac side, that will clone/restore a Boot Camp partition?

I have the Winclone backup, but I am unclear how to restore it.
Using Winclone, I can select the Image to restore.
When I click on Mount, Winclone puts a disk image of the partition on the desktop.
When I select the desired partition in Destination and click Restore, it tells me "No Windows Partition Found."
Has anyone done this? Can you give me any advice about how to complete the restore?
Good luck to you. I am trying to transfer/migrate my Bootcamp partition (XP pro, FAT32) to a larger HD. I tried Winclone, and like you could create an image, but am unable to restore it on the new drive. I get the same error that you do. I tried creating a Bootcamp partition, rather than having Winclone do it, but would get this error in the log:
Source image volume size is not an exact multiple of 1 MiB
This happened whether I used Bootcamp Assistant or Disk Utility to create the partition, and it didn't matter whether I used a larger partition size or attempted to match the existing one. Apparently Winclone measures the block-sizes differently than Finder, Terminal, or any other measurement that I have used reports.
I've read about suggestions to turn my old FAT-32 Bootcamp Parition into an NFTS one, but I'm loathe to do that since I have on idea if that will work.
