WinCoder Goes Boom! ...

, all my InterVideo OEM software is garbage, it all has bugs and it seems InterVideo and MSI have washed their hand of it  :( - all well... I don't mind that WinProducer and WinDVD are a little unstable, but what I am really peeved about is my WinCoder install. It doesn't like me.
Quite simply, I install the VGA card Drivers on a fresh Windows XP Pro install, install the latest NVidia (MSI Certified) Capture drivers (3.8 I think?), then install WinProducer which installs WinCoder..... all well and good.... But when I attempt to run the software it goes BOOM and I get a lovely Windows XP "..encountered a problem.." dialogue box saying something about MFC42.DLL, promptly followed by the application crashing. I t doesn't even get beyond the WinCoder splash screen.
So, anyone got a fix, got any ideas, got any other TV-In/Capture software ideas?
I have also tried with the default WDM drivers and version 28.90 MSI VGA drivers .... no joy so far :(

Rhys,
I'm experiencing the same problem. Did you solve this issue?
Thanks
Best regards
Eric

  • When my PC goes boom

    Hello all,
I downloaded the 30 day having tried it before once and discarded it but now LR seems MUCH faster (my main gripe from before) and I'm hovering...to buy or not to buy?
Currently I use RawShooter to convert, PS CS2 to work on my pics and ThumbsPlus to organise. In Thumbs I have set up galleries which are very nice, thank you! Natural landscapes, Manmade landscapes, nudes etc. Thumbs creates one big fat database with all the info about these galleries and I store that on an external HD with the pics but back up both the pics and the DB regularly to two separate locations. So, if and when my PC goes boom or has to have XP reinstalled it won't be a problem. But if I used Lightroom, well then what? Would all my collections, keywords etc be lost leaving me with a big fat jumble of images? Is there a way to store this stuff separately? What's the disaster management procedure for LR?
Thanks for any thoughts on this, it's a deal breaker!
    Phil

As a wee addendum, another deal breaker... the Thumbs DB being on my external means that I can open Thumbs on my laptop at home or my desktop at the studio and see all the same galleries etc. How is that to be dealt with by LR? Am I limited to my collections being in one place?
The same is true of RawShooter, the adjustment data being stored in a subfolder means they are applied wherever I open RS.

  • The Bass goes BOOM....oh wait...no it doesn't

I just got my iBook G4 and i was rather unimpressed with the audio quality of the speakers, the bass especially. And I was also disappointed not being able to find a place to adjust the bass and treble settings. Please help me if you know how to change an iBook's bass and treble settings, and/or if you have any tricks you used to make the speakers have an all around better sound. Thanks.

I'm not aware of a system-wide control over bass/treble levels. If you are running iTunes, you may want to experiment with different equalizer settings. Also, the QuickTime Player app does offer some A/V controls including bass and treble sliders. The DVD Player app has an Audio Equalizer panel as well.

  • Problems with some web parts when using XSLT

I have a page on which I have several web parts. Some web parts are custom while others are OOB and only XSLT is applied on them.
I am using 2 WFEs with NLB. Problem is when I do iisreset on one of the WFE then the OOB web parts with XSLT start giving error. You know the standard error "corelation ID....bla bla bla". Anyway the error automatically goes away after a 2, 3 minutes.
So basically if I do iisreset or stop the iis, and then load that page, then all custom web parts load fine except those OOB web parts with XSLT. And then they too start working fine after 2, 3 minutes if I reload page.
What could be the reason for that? Looks like some service on which XSLT depends take time to load!? And once that service is loaded then they start working fine?  Or it could be due to distributed cache or something!?

    Hi  Frank,
Which version of the SharePoint 2010 did you use?
In June 2011 CU code was added to the DataFormWebPart (which is used to display list data) that if an XSLT transform took longer than 5 seconds, a StackOverflowException was thrown. This was done to avoid
a potential Denial Of Service attack on SharePoint if crafted XML could be sent that would continually clog up the XSLT, thereby stopping pages from rendering.
In August 2011 CU the transform "timeout" was reduced from 5 seconds to 1.
So, any list with XSLT that takes longer than 1 second to parse in an XSLT transform goes *boom*.
After you perform an IIS reset , the cache of the page was cleared and you encountered the error. Once the page is cached, there is no error.
You can try to set up XSLT Timeout with the following PS commands:
    $farm = Get-SPFarm
    $farm.XsltTransformTimeOut = 5
    $farm.Update()

I assume you are using queues.
I truly wonder what you are doing different. Since the
error is occuring outside of JMS and in the EJB - before JMS is called -
I suggest posting to the ejb newsgroup.
Note that yours is a standard use case which distributed destinations
are actually specifically designed for (if you
are using customer connection factories, just
make sure ServerAffinity is enabled on the connection factory to
ensure that clients always connect to the local physical destination,
configure the MDB to refer to the JNDI name of the distributed
destination, and then target the MDB to the cluster - an MDB pool
will then automatically be dedicated to each physical destination).

  • Do I need another RMA? N560GTX Ti Twin Frozr II/OC

    Hey folks. Hi Svet.
Question: So, uh, is there something wrong with 560 GTX Ti based cards?!
I bought the card in February. It went flaky and was RMA'd in June.
    Thread here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=149374.msg1109239#msg1109239
They sent me someone elses' repaired card, or a new card, but it hasn't lasted even 5 months of near zero use! I put in the replacement, and it seemed to work fine; ran all benchmarks and tests when I first installed it. And never gave it another thought.
I haven't had much need for 3D or gaming, I certainly haven't had time to game all summer. I mostly web browse and photo edit, and for that it's working fine. I'm mostly in linux and the only OpenGL work I do is rendering/modelling in Blender. In case you don't know, consumer 3D like 3D Vision doesn't work under linux.
Fast forward to today. Some family were over, the kids wanted to play with the cool 3D glasses, so I fire up Win7x64 and an OLD game (TOB: HL2 & Portal) and it looks horrible!
The white "fire flies" are everywhere, it looks kind of like a sports stadium filled with camera flashes going off. The textures are not only tearing, but the colors are freaky (mostly primary colors - white, magenta, blue) and tons of flickering. The textures are flickering individually. 3D or non-3D it's the same. You can still play, but of course you can't see. And eventually, it locks, and you have to reboot.
Trying to run Kombustor at just 1280x720 results in garbled video and finally the app crashes or hangs. The "furry" text is all interconnected, like there's extra faces or something.
The card has never been overclocked (beyond factory OC)... 880/1760/2100 MHz. Re: temps, in 2D it's always around 34C (and it never gets over 54C before crashing.)
The system is stable and runs just fine, until you throw something graphically-intensive at it, like gaming. Then the card goes boom.
This is with the 285.62 driver, I've also tried the 280.26 from the MSI site with the same results.
I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue, the reason I'm posting before RMAing is, what should I do here? I do NOT want to RMA this thing just to have it die again. I want a stable system, period. The card should last indefinitely, at least until it's so old no one would bother using it! And with solid caps replacing that first-to-fail point of electrolytics, this should be easily attainable! I know MSI won't ever say if there's a design flaw with the chip nor the card, but you guys are another story. Could I, for example, get an RMA unit and then flash it so it will be a slower, ordinary 560GTX? Obviously I could, what I mean is, would this make the card survive longer? I'll take stable over speed any day of the week.
As you can imagine, I'm frustrated. And POOR, which makes matters worse - I can't swap it out even if I wanted to.
Well, thanks for reading. Any help appreciated.

    Thanks, I've fixed it up.
I've tried to update the bios cux since a few days, the vga doesn't keep 60 fps in game when recording with fraps. Sometimes it goes to 55 and then it is hard to play. The game is NFS Hot Pursuit 2010 and up to now I could play it while recording at 60fps fix.
I use AB profile overclocked to 938 (core) and 2205 (memory) with voltage at 1.012

  • Non standard Year member in Planning Years dimension

We have a non standard (to Planning) member of the Years dimension called 'No Year'. In order to add it initially, I had to go to the back end of Planning (HSP_OBJECT and HSP_UNIQUE_NAMES tables) and modify the members there. This was in version 9. The order of the Years members was then FY95 through FY14, then came No Year, then FY15. This worked for our start and end years within Planning, as our start year was FY09 and our end year was No Year, which allowed us to Plan through FY14 and also entered non-year specific data to No Year on forms. It also allowed us to omit 'No Year' from our scripts using a range of years FY09:FY14 (using substitution variables). Now that the year has rolled over (and, incidentally, we've upgraded to version 11), and our Planning years are FY10 through FY15, I would like to move No Year to be after FY15. However, I don't seem to be able to do that by updating the underlying tables above. I make the changes to the two tables, but it is not reflected in Planning (they display in the same order), and if I try to edit either of the two members in Planning (No Year or FY15), it gives me an error saying the member already exists. Does anyone know how I can accomplish moving the No Year member? I need to do it not only this year, but to have a process my client can follow each year, moving that member in the outline to be directly after the last Planning year.
    Thanks,
    Sabrina

If you want to go about hacking the tables and changing the order of 'No Year'.
If you run the following SQL against your planning application
    select * from hsp_object where object_type = 38
You will see the position column and will have values like 1000000 = First place, 1000010 = Second Place and so on.
To alter the position then you need to note down the position value of 'No Year' and 'FY15'
    update hsp_object set position = '1000070'
    where object_type = 38 and object_name='No Year'
    update hsp_object set position = '1000080'
    where object_type = 38 and object_name='FY14'
Restart planning. Now this is all done at your own risk and when you app goes boom don't blame me :)
If 'No Year' was added in the correct way when you add year's it should always stay as the last position.
Planning assigns object ids between set ranges, normal year values (FY..) are 50002 onwards
No Year is out of that range e.g 50412
When No Year is added correctly then planning will add a new to the normal range of values for year (last year value + 1) and then alters the position order

  • How do I recover a corrupt PSD file?

My last save of a 1.5GB PSD file went without a hitch. Routine save, as I always do before closing Photoshop (using CTRL-S). The save was not interrupted in any way, nor did it behave differently than it did the previous 100 times I saved this particular file.
However, upon reloading, now the progress bar stalls at appx. 30% before the thing gives me a disk error.
I have 600GB and 700GB free on both of my hard drives, so disk space is not the problem.
I tried loading the file with both Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 64-bit Edition. Both produce the same results. Disk error.
    Rebooting did not change anything.
I tried copying the file to another location, but I get a "Cannot read from source disk" error.
But it's there, seemingly full size, with two weeks worth of work in it.
I ran a Google search for PSD recovery tools, and there are several commercial products claiming to be able to help. But I wanted to know if Adobe provided one first, then if anyone ever tried any of the other tools out there and saw it actually work.
    Thanks!

What non-Windows repair tools have I advised you to use?  I suggested a full System Image backup, using Windows Backup.
It's not a software problem, it's a confirmed hardware failure.  Software repair tools will not fix it.  This is experience talking.
The worst that can happen is that the drive will fail completely and you will lose all your data.  And yes, even Caviar Black drives do fail.
If something under the hood of your car goes boom and you lose power, do you just floor it to maintain speed so that you can keep driving?  No.  You stop immediately, to take the stress off your engine so that you don't compound the problem.  Something like a CHKDSK /R would exercise heck out of your drive - the very thing that's failing.  Is that really what you want?

  • When I try to save my CS6 Illustrator keeps crashing?

Working on Mac OSX 10.8.2. Please help!!! Read in forum to remove FXGFileFormat.aip from plugins folder -- moved the plugin to desktop and moved file from plugins to trash???

And what exactly are you trying to save? This could be AI's normal "Me doesn't like pixel data" or other long standing misbehaviors that relate to using high DPI raster effects or complex constructs and then everything goes boom when the program needs to embed the PDF version or a preview when saving files. Turning off PDF compatibility might be a start, but of course will make the files useless elsewhere. anything beyond that will require much more information...

  • Vienna / Sounfont 2.4 b

It seems that their are flaws in the new format that need to be worked out.
. Local sample start/end settings have no affect on soundfonts ,sounds that use these setting in will be played back incorrectly (with the settings ignored). These setting would normally allow you to do none destructi've sample editing in Vienna.
    2. Stereo soundfonts play back mono (both left & right side samples are centered) causing a flange or phase effect. Once again settings are ignored (pan l/r) and the soundfont plays back incorrectly. attempting to adjust these settings in Vienna has no affect.
    3. Midi synth volume sliders are glitchey. When moving midi volume slider up and down while midi is playing you get artifacts. For instance , if your playing midi drums that goes ~boom boom bap~ you might hear a glitchey ~tck tck tac~ as you move the sliders, often even at the 0 volume setting
    4. Auditoning samples in Vienna sound explorer does not seem to work.
Their may be others but these are the ones that I have found so far. Hopefully these issues will be resolved soon.
If anyone else has noticed these same issues and can confirm (or debunk) my finding please chime in.
    Thanks in advance

. Local sample start/end settings are having no affect on soundfonts ,soundfonts that use these setting are being played back incorrectly (with the settings ignored). These settings normally allow you to do none destructi've sample editing in Vienna. This problem causes certain soundfonts loops to buzz or hum and causes multisound samples to play back the entire sample as oppose to the isolated parts. 2. Midi synth volume sliders are glitchey. When moving midi volume slider up and down while midi is playing you get artifacts. For instance , if your playing a midi drum sequence that goes ~boom boom bap~ you might hear a glitchey ~tck tck tac~ as you move the sliders, often even at the 0 volume setting. This also includes panning to left and right3. Auditioning samples in the Vienna sound explorer does not seem to work. Samples do not play back when clicked 4. Their is also a problem with the mixer apps (game, entertainment, creation) not being completely compatible with multiple monitors. When attempting to drag them to the 2nd monitor the left edge stays on the right side of the screen of monitor #. If you try drag it further it snaps right back. 5. Mixer settings reset to default after reboot even after saving the settings.6. Playing soundfonts and audio together at lower latency settings in Sonar4 causes distortion, popping and clicking. If the same project is played back without the soundfont midi accompaniment, it plays back fine with no distortion, etc. This is the same or similar problem that appeared in the early Audigy2 drivers and and was later fixed with a driver patchPlease let me know if you can confirm these problems and if their are plan to address them in near future.

  • Power Manager : Genuine Lenovo Battery Not Attached

I refuse to pay the bloated price Lenovo charge for their 'genuine' Lenovo battery and bought a long-life one for less than half the Lenovo price. However I keep getting that annoying message popping up and i bascially have to click the pop up to see a website to then shut it down. Invaiably the message will repeat several times and just , well , 'do my nut in'.
there is a similar thread in the T60 section but the fix there entails an XP element which i tried but it wont work in Vista..anyone any idea how to disable this dumb warning?
I'll take my chances if the battery goes boom....

the only way to disable it is to uninstall the ThinkPad Power Manager software.

if your battery does go boom then the cost savings won't seem so great.   almost every battery explosion i've seen (all of which were non-genuine batteries) completely destroyed the notebook.
lenovo batteries have monitoring/failsafe electronics built in.   third-party batteries do not have this.   third-party batteries also wear out much more quickly than a genuine as they use cheap cells.   unfortunately, there's no such thing as an inexpensive long-life battery.

  • Updated iPad2 to iOS5 - iTunes 10.5 crashes trying to sync photos

When tryung to sync my iPad, iTunes crashes upon getting about 1/3 of the way through the step of Analyzing the iPhoto Library. I am trying to sync 1 (one) Album from my iPhoto library. My versions are as follows - iPhoto 9.2, Mac OS X 10.6.8, iTunes 10.5, my 64GBi Pad2 is running iOS 5 and has over 12 GB free space. My iMac has over 150 GB free space. I have repeatedly trashed the iPod Photo Cache in the iPhoto Library, to no avail. This has only been a problem since the latest updates came out on 12 October 2011. I would really like to have my latest travel photos with me when I go visiting next week. And no I'd rather not turn on Photo Stream, thank you. I am tempted to just let it keep attempting and crashing as sending the crash reports to Apple. Any other help is welcome.

More info on this issue. I have close to 9,000 photos in my iPhoto library. The iPad will sync photos from a designated folder outside of iPhoto. This leads me to beleive my iPhoto library structure is corrupt (although I can view all the photos in iPhoto without crashing) or some metadata to the library is bad. Either way when iTunes tries to analyze the iphoto library somewhere between 20% and 40% of the way through the process, it goes BOOM! I am trying to look for help on rebuilding the iphoto library and see it that helps, but haven't found anything so far.

  • Boom - out goes the hard drive

After preaching today about the necessity of backups and bootable drive clones I came home to finish some system cleanup and moving some files around on my new (larger) backup drive.
I decided to do a clone of my boot drive first (with CCC) since it's been a while since I did one. After doing the clone I went to Disk Utility and did a Verify Disk on both the cloned drive and my original MacHD disk. My primary disk failed the verify, and since I can't repair the boot drive I rebooted to my new cloned drive.
Wouldn't you know - after rebooting, and then finding that even DiskWarrior was reporting it couldn't deal with the drive, the directory structure was completely corrupted and boom - all data was gone after the DiskWarrior repair.
What a timing, huh. Wow, another day and this would have been much more painful...
So, I'm currently in the process of reformatting the main drive, and will clone the drive back when it's done and verified.
But I do have a question. Since I'm running off the cloned drive right now I see that many of my file icons have changed (MS Word files for instance look like a very old icon, not what they were when booted to the main drive) and all of my Apps, except for Apple apps, in the Dock no longer work. I assume this may be due to paths being different in the properties somewhere (my old disk was MacHD and the new one is MacHD2) and that will be corrected once the main drive is rebuilt.
    Does that sound right?
    Thanks,
    -n

    Okay, answering my own post...
So, the file icons were in fact resolved after the primary disk was restored from the clone.
But, the broken Dock icons were not, so I had to remove them and drag new ones there. Not a big deal, but seems odd to me why it was only some apps.
For what it's worth, this was a great disaster recovery test. I basically had a full disk crash with complete loss of boot drive and data, and I was back up and running with a clean system and all data restored within 5 hours. Gotta love it.
