Window 7 64 bit - sleep mode - PC won't wake up

Accidentally put PC into sleep mode from start button. Power lite initially blinked. Moving mouse, hitting space bar or "sleep" key on keyboard does not work.  I held power button down for 5 seconds, and PC started beeping. Held power button down again for  seconds and power lite stays non, not blinking, but blank screen. HP monitor says "no signal" and then it goes into sleep mode. How can I "wake up" my PC?

The support article on Firefox "hanging" has a few pointer on Firefox failing to fully shut down and clean up after itself. Does anything here help:

  • Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart... please help.

    Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
    Many thanks

  • GT70 BSOD or Stuck after Windows puts it to sleep mode of turns off monitor

    Hi Everyone!
i have an  issue (or 2) with my laptop.
    both happens when:
    1) whenever i put the laptop into sleep mode or either windows does so automatically (inactive period), - the laptop will go to sleep just fine.
    2) windows turns off monitor after a period of inactivity. (sleep mode due to inactivity was disabled in this case)
in both the cases i mentions above, if i wake the computer within lets say 5 minutes, it'll turn on just fine.
but after a certain period of time passes it wont.
with the sleep mode, the computer will wake and will then produce a BSOD STOP error 0x4 and restart.
with monitor turned off it'll simply wont turn on, not responding to neither keyboard, mouse or power button. - i have to do a hard reboot
    any ideas?
    anything i can check?
note the laptop just came back from a warranty repair, so all parts have been tested and been found ok!
    system specs:
    MSI GT70-0ND
CPU: Intel Core i7-3630QM 2.4GHz (Intel GPU HD 4000 included)
    Memory: 16GB DDR3
    Storage: 750GB HDD 7200rpm
128GB SSD (Patriot Pyro SE) - OS installed on this.
GPU: 4GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 675MX
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    Thanks in Advance!!

i dont think i have the same problem as in the other thread.
    my bios:
my laptop doesnt restart when my screen is turned off and i try to wake it. it would simply wont wake up.
and my BSOD happens only after i wake the laptop from sleep mode and only if it been in sleep mode for a while. meaning i if i wake it up within a few mins of going to sleep it'll boot justfine.

I have read your post on how your monitor goes into sleep mode and will not wake up, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To rule out any sleep mode issues with the monitor, I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try a different cable connecting your monitor to your computer

First of all, please install the latest drivers for the machine and update the BIOS to check whether the issue is gone.

  • MPB gets very hot while in sleep mode and won't come back on

I've had this happen to me twice now, and I'm not sure what's causing it. Here's what happens.
I put the MPB into sleep mode, put it in my backpack, and when I open it a couple hours later, the machine is very hot to the touch and the fan is whirring away. On opening the lid, the display will not come back and the only way to fix it is a hard restart.
I checked the battery indicator on the side, and surprisingly, it had 3-4 green dots, so it had plenty of power.
The only common denominator I can come up with is that both times this has happened I had been using Fusion 2.01 during the day, but had closed out of it before putting the computer to sleep.
    Any input would be welcome!

OK, we are clearly on the same page. We can now exclude (in all probability -- see below)) the lid coming open.
    BocaBoy wrote:
Graham, thanks for the response. Since this happened the first time, I've been very careful about making sure the lid is closed and that the Apple light is out. I have seen the light go out, come back on a few seconds later, then go back out again.
Pulsating. A one-second on/off display of that light?
Yes, I'm referring to VMWare Fusion 2.01. This problem only seems to occur when, during the day, I have been in Fusion running my Boot Camp partition as a VM. I want to stress the fact that I close out of Fusion before I put the computer to sleep. I agree that there is something that Fusion is doing to the display adapter that may be causing this problem. The argument against that is that it isn't consistent. There are times I've used Fusion and successfully put the computer to sleep.
OK, so then if this works sometimes, what is different about these times. When you use the Windows software (or even the Mac software come to that -- there could be a conflict) is there any software that may still be trying to access the internet or other processes (in my earlier reply I mentioned iStumbler -- a network utility -- that caused me some slight annoyance until I realised what was going on).
The only other thing I can think of is that if my car goes over a bump that the lid is bouncing opening slightly, causing it to flick on from sleep mode, then go back into sleep. The fit, however, is tight and secure in my pack, so I'm really skeptical of that explanation.
Agree. Although it should not be excluded 100% until proven. Keep an open mind. I take mine on Bangkok buses and believe me, they bounce. I have never had my MBP come on.
No I haven't done any "maintenance" except being manic about doing a SuperDuper backup once a week along with Time Machine. What do you suggest?
Glad to hear about the TM: I wish more would back up.
I think if this were me (it has been) and I were having to do a forced power off, then my first reaction would be to try a safe boot; and then to boot up again. That at least would deal with any stray temp files and/or processes that were cut short. If this happens too often, I would be looking to stronger utilities, more to be on the safe side than to make repairs.
I would also be looking in the Console: a check of the times between when you sent it off to sleep and the time you found it at work, might show what is waking it up. Also, when you do find it running (and can get in) see which processes are active at that time. If you cannot, then the Console is your only resource, methinks.

  • Change to sleep mode (hibernatemode) won't stick

I have a brand new MacBook 2.1GHZ (upgraded to 2GB RAM) and am trying to get the "old" sleep mode working instead of safe sleep.
After issuing the command "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0" and giving the password, it appears to work fine for a bit, but quickly reverts to mode 3. I can't figure out what might be doing this.
I need to be able to pick up and move fairly often and I'd rather not have to wait the 20-30 seconds it takes to write the contents of RAM to the hard drive.
Any ideas? Was there some change to the newest generation of MacBook that causes this to revert to safe sleep on its own?

Mine does this also. The two buttons on the bottom light up but the screen stays black. This is my second phone (exchanged the first for doing this during the two week grace period) and it is also doing this. The only way to get the phone back is to pop the battery. It isn't a screen setting. There is a thread about it here also of many others who are having this issue. Any assistance in solving this issue would be great.

  • Windows Vista 64-bit - ITunes died and won't reinstall

Last night my wife let her laptop battery run dry with itunes 10 open. We had just installed it a week or so ago, and had not updated from the online download version.
Anyhow, afterward, when I tried to open iTunes, MS would pop up with a message that the program failed to open properly. The laptop is Windows Vista 64-bit with the 64-bit software.
I uninstalled, restarted, reinstalled, restarted, and tried again. Seemed to install correctly, but still got the crash when attempting to open.
Tried QuickTime, it also will no longer open. Uninstalled both, and no when I try to install iTunes, it goes through the gathering information process of the install, but then pops up with a window saying the installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured.
I downloaded Windows Install Utility v. 3, but it shows iTunes and QuickTime completely removed (at least no entries were in their to remove).
I also redownloaded the iTunes .exe, with the same results. Even tried the 32-bit, heh, which obviously didn't work, but worth a shot I suppose.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
I did a backup of the registry and went through and hard delete most of the iTunes entries, with no success, so I just restored the registry to the original since I wasnt 100% sure that I should be doing that.

Below are the two most recent problem reports for each of the three programs. No other programs had any recent problem reports. One interesting thing, from the time stamps, there are no crash reports from the last few iTunes install attempts which were giving the message from above and the latest attempt where it just flickers then doesn't do anything else.

  • Won't wake up from sleep mode, keyboard won't type

When in sleep mode, can not wake, keyboard will not type. So far had several problems with Lion. First Time ever my imac slowed to a crawl and forced me to m power off.

Since you have a new machine, I would call Apple immediately and have them deal with the problem.

  • Help! Stuck on white screen after sleep mode and won't start again!

Bought the iMac last week, updated to 10.5.1. Worked well until this morning after I did a security update. Then put it in sleep mode - and basta! After I wanted to work on it again - it didn't restart. So, I had to switch off using power button, but it never started again and always got stuck on the white screen with the Apple logo and the rotating loop. Tried to repair permissions - cannot do it, as it says there is an error. Tried to re-install from DVD the Leopard while archiving the previous information - can't do either - says error. Now trying to re-install it again with an erase option. But this is not a good option, people! This is pretty very much disappointing, Apple!
    Can anyone help, please!

Boy that is way too bad.
Could you tell us what the error message was?
While sometimes the error messages are not very informative, other times they are. That might be a clue as to what is going on.
When you restart from the DVD you have the option to access Apple's Disk Utility and repair the disk.
You might want to try that, skip repairing permissions at this point.
You can also reset the computer by unplugging all cables including the power cable for at least 15 seconds and then plug in the power cable and keyboard and restart.
You can reset the PRAM by holding down the command-option - p - r keys simultaneously during restart and waiting for the startup chime then releasing those keys after the second chime to allow the start to continue.

  • My mac mini will go back to sleep mode just after a Wake on WAN

    Hi,
I am trying to find the correct setting in order to keep my mac mini woken up after sending a magic packet relayed by my router. My mac is connected via USB to a Drobo Mini which provides external storage capacity.
Basically what happens is the following  :
    - I wake up my mac via wakeonwan.fr for example
    - I get access to my mac for 1 minute (tops)
    - I loose access to my mac and I have to wake it up again (typically internal web server pages are not displayed anymore after 1mn)
Configured settings (in the energy saving panel) :
    - Idle time before sleep : 15mn
    - No HDD stop in case of inactivity
    - Wake on LAN activated
In case I configure my mac not to sleep in the energy saving panel, everything works fine, but the goal here would be to save energy from my Mac + NAS and to preserve the use of the HDDs.
Would there be any monitoring commands / hidden threads that could help me know which process is forcing my mac to cut the WAN access / sleep without notice?
    Thank you,
    Sowdah

    Hello Sowdah,
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

MBP went off and won't turn on again. Charger shows full battery ( green indicator) although I know I was close to low batt befor going off. What happened???

Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting attempts.  Very helpful.  Sorry, I cannot read "logs."  My eyes just glass over on those things.  Hopefully, a knowledgeable user will come along shortly to decipher for you.
I noticed from the pics that your location setting is "untitled."  Have you tried the "Automatic" setting?  Run the diagnostic test?  Results?
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.
