PopUp window at public wifi hotspots?
If I connect to a public wifi hotspot I get a popup window where the landing page from the operator is shown (captive portal). How can this be managed? Because the window is closed after the login there is no chance to get the session window for logout etc. from the service provider.
Thanks.I run a number of wifi hotspots, all of which use a captive portal "Splash Page" that is branded per location.
Since the iOS6 update I have been swamped with guests and customers complaining about this www.apple.com "success" page popping up instead of the intended customers login and terms acceptance page. When cancelling it drops the wifi router connection and there is no way to connect to the intended free wifi hotspot.
The problem is in Apple's update, there currently is no way to disable this unwanted feature.
The solution is to go to your Settings>General>Cellular>Cellular Data and turn it OFF when you are at the hotspot location.
Now when you choose the hotspot's SSID and join it......you will get the sign in page from the captive portal and not the "success" page.
Be sure and turn the Cellular Data back on.....when you leave the hotspot.
Apple needs to fix this WISPr function, I am only a small provider and I am sure that worldwide there are going to be hundreds of thousands of iphone, ipad and laptop users who will no longer be able to sign on at wifi hotspots, work, universities, hospitals and hotels.
As a side note: I have an older 4S phone with iOS6 and I cannot join.....my wife has a newer 4S phone with iOS6 installed and even though both our phones are set exactly the same......she can connect without turning off her cellular data and I cannot. Curious? -
Connecting to wifi hotspots problem
Have set up my blackberry to connect to the Blackberry Internet Service through Orange in a 6 month free trial and to connect wirelessly with my home network - so far so good.
However, have tried but been unsuccessful in connecting to open wifi hotspots on Virgin Trains and Pret - both I believe are tmobile supplied.
I have my blackberry set to Hotspot browser as the Default browser config, Internet browser on Default MDS browser and Orange World on Default WAP Browser.
The blackberry has no problem finding the open wifi networks, tries to connect but always ends in failure.
Your help would be much appreciated.u have two options
1) Go to
Menu->Tools->Settings->Connections->Access Points and delete all access points other than your home WLAN. You can always recreate your service provider access points when you need them with the Settings Wizzard.
2) While at home go
Menu -> Connectivity -> WLAN wiz and set up your wifi access point from there. (passkey and even give it a simpler name if you want) once you do that it should come up as a valid access point that you can choose from or set as the default access point.

Mac Pro SL Wifi / Airport Problems... big time !
Hey everyone,
im typing this text on my 600 euro sony subnotebook because of wireless problems with my 6 Core Xeon Mac Pro Late 2010 i paid 6024 euros for.
Whats the Problem ?...
My Airport connenction is usual 4 times slower than on every other wifi device on my netgear wnr 2000v2 Router. And extremly instable too... it drops down to 0 bytes per second transfer for over 1 minute peaking at 40kb and dropping down to 0 bytes again... all other devices run at 200 kb/s at least...
I tried so far:
resetting the pram
deleting the System Configuration Folder from /Macintosh HD/ Library/ Preferences....
deleting Keychain Passwords for wifi
deleting all chaches via Cocktail
resetting smc
resetting the router
tried every firmware version on my router
tried different channels on my router
tried every encryption and no encryption on my router
tried b/g/n modes on my router
tried to deactivate quality of service settings on the router
installed a combo update of 10.6.7 snow leopard over the first 10.6.7 installation
nothing worked, increased the bandwith / stability, or it worked ony for a couple off minutes or 2 restarts...
i know these Mac OS X wireless problems since i got my Powerbook G4 in 2005 with Panther and Tiger and Leopard and i cannot believe after 5 Years of Development a Unix based OS has problems with networking... i expect a Unix OS to work like 1+1= 2 and not 1+1=268 on a rainy day, on sunny days its 739... this is what i experienced from windows systems in the past... i have my doubts that 10.6.8 will solve this problem... oh wait, maybe lion will fix this !If you've never had good WiFi performance from the MP, that suggests a hardware issue, such as a loose antenna connection.

I’ve read the thread about flaky wifi, but I think the following may be a different issue, as this is not purely wifi connectivity:
I am using a year old MacBook Pro.
It connects fine into my own wifi, and at friends’ homes, hotels etc.
However, it is problematic when it comes to using free-to-use hotspots in public areas.
Typically I can connect right into a wifi system.
Then the procedure is to open the web browser (Safari or Firefox installed), which should be automatically directed to the organisation’s log-in, where you accept their terms and conditions, and off you go.
Sometimes for me this works fine, so if I go into a McDonalds, no problem.
But it often does not, for example I cannot hook into the Orange France Service, nor the Eurotunnnel service and others.
However, in all instances my iPhone works immediately.
Seems to me that something on the MacBook may be misconfigured, and any help to identify and rectify the problem will be much appreciated.Nothing in your MBP is seriously miss-configured. Most times it's the service. What I do is to create a new location for every public hotspot I visit. Outline the preferences along with ISP (network names) in my Preferred networks list. If a hotspot reacts like the one's that are giving you issues I manually type the hotspots sign-in page in the url address in my browser. Once there I can bookmark that page for the next time it gets buggy.

Windows Vista and WiFi networking problem with MackBook Air
Hi, everyone!
Thanks in advance for the following help.
For some specific programms I need Windows Vista to be set up on my MacBook Air.
The problem with Broadcom WiFi adapter.
While moving large files over home network it hangs and looses the wifi network. It works OK while surfing the internet or doing other low traffic job. But when it comes to 2 MB/sec transfer it doesn't work. I tried two different routers, no positive result. PC works propely on any file sizes. After booting the Leopard the problem goes away. So it is onle Windows Vista problem.
May be drivers? I tried 4.170.25.19 Windows Vista drivers from Broadcom - it didn't help. But I am not goog in driver settings in Control Panel, so may be the solution is there.
Any ideas how to solve it?
Thanks for help in advance.
Andrey.Hello Nescom. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm afraid I really don't have an answer for you but I can offer my experiences with large files transfer with Vista. My current home network is a combination of Windows PC, Windows Servers, and Macs. Large file transfers between most of them have relatively the same performance, except when transferring large files from the Vista PC to any other OS. It is demonstrably slower. Interestingly, transfers between Vista machines does not appear to be a problem. I understand that this is a known problem by Microsoft and was supposed to be fixed with Vista SP1.
So the problem might not be your network, but Vista itself. I'm curious if you have this problem when transferring large files to another Vista device? -

Very disapointed in Lenovo's service on my T430 machine type 2342CTO with Windows Pro 7 64 bit
I have been a ThinkPad user since the first model 700. I have always liked them and when I have had to use other laptops I found them inferior. However one thing my team has been telling me in the past year or two is that they do not want to purchase anymore Lenovo ThinkPad's. They have told me that the service and support has been greatly degraded. I was hesitant to agree with them until my present experience. We purchase all of our ThinkPad's with a 4 year on-site warranty. We have people who are in the field and when their computer goes down we need to get it back up and running ASAP.
Three weeks ago my hard drive started to give me some problems and one day after shutting down the computer a message came up that it needed to run Checkdisk which it did. I was able to keep it going and I did have a backup. I contacted the 800 number to talk with a service person and they ordered up service for the replacement of the hard drive and also to replace the fan and sent me the system disks for the T430. Two days later the insight service person showed up with the parts. The disks showed up as well via UPS. The service person replaced the fan and the HDD. There were 4 DVD's for the system disks. He started the rebuild and asked if I could finish it and I said I could with no problem. He left. I continued the process. After the 3rd DVD it asked to put in the 4th and when I did a message said that this was the wrong DVD. I tried all the other 3 with the same response. I tried building it from scratch again and the same problem. I called support again and the guy I spoke with thought that I must have a bad DVD and he would send out another set. That set of 4 DVD’s arrived the next day which I was very thankful for. He told me that they could only guaranty 2 days. I thought OK we should be up and running shortly. The same problem occurred again. Bear in mind that both sets of these DVD's were all labeled for the ThinkPad T430 machine type 2342 which was my laptop and for Windows Pro 7, 64 bit. I called Lenovo and this time the tech I spoke with said that there was another set of Disks for my machine that should have been sent. Of course I was frustrated but there was not a lot I could do about that and I asked if they could make sure that they were overnighted to me so that I would be sure to get them on the next day which was Thursday. He told me that he could not do that, that they could only guaranty 2 day. I called the next morning to get the tracking number which they gave me and it was supposed to be delivered on Friday which I was very thankful for. That was Good Friday. However UPS had some severe weather at their hub in Kentucky and everything was delayed and the disks did not show up until Monday. I had now been down a whole week from my first call the Monday before.
The new set of disks was 3 DVD’s labeled for the T430, Machine type 2342 and Windows Pro 7, 64 bit. I started the build process. It continued to work but I made a mistake in the order of disks so I thought that these disks have a problem too. I called Lenovo and they said that I should just send the system in for depot repair. I said that will take at least until probably Thursday. The guy I was speaking to said that I should have it back by Wednesday. I asked if there was any way that I could send it to them directly that day. He said no I could not, I had to wait for a box. I asked if there was anyway to expedite the process and he spoke to his manager and his manager said that the level of service that was on the machine would not allow for any faster service. The also told me that my service contract would allow me to take it to an authorized Lenovo service center around me. I said to him that they probably have a queue as well and that I will have to wait for that. As an aside note we did try service like this with one of our other ThinkPad’s that had a problem and the place messed up the system and we ended up at the end of the day having to send it to their depot for repair. I hung up and though let me try these disks one more time. I did and I saw my mistake and the system loaded up the DVD’s properly. I was getting excited that I could be up and running shortly. However my excitement was short lived. Once it started to reboot and expand the installation the drive failed and said that it had to run Checkdisk. It did and once again there were all kinds of orphaned files etc. I had to reboot and run it from the DVD’s again and I went through the whole process once again. The system went into a complete failure and would not do anything. I called back support with my case # and gave them this information. The box came the next day and I packed it up and sent it off. I then started tracking it and it arrived on Wednesday as expected. Then I wanted to go to the site and track the progress of the repair. The document you have to fill out and send back with the system gives information on where to go on the web to track the process. My shows that it arrived on Wednesday 4/8 as expected. The first message shows “Machine being repaired” at 08:52. Then I checked later in the early evening hoping to see shipped back to customer. However what I did see was the following message “Hold for Parts – Service call is on hold until parts arrive”. Then I kept tracking it and saw another entry on 4/10 at 02:01:54 which was the same “Hold for Parts – Service call is on hold until parts arrive”. That was of course Friday. I called the service and they told me that they were waiting on parts which they could not tell me what parts and that there was nothing that they could do. I then asked if there was anyway to expadite this and the girl I spoke to said that she would seek to accelerate this to another level and that I would get a call from Lenovo in the next 2 to 3 business days! I said to her that you really mean that that is accelerating it and she said yes. Yesterday I received a call from an automated attendant, not a real person who told me that they were waiting on parts for my computer and that it could be “5 to 7 business days before they receive the part”. I could not believe this. I called again today 4/15 and asked if anyone could tell me the status because the website told me very little. I told the girl that I was speaking to that I had received this automated attendant telling me that a part would take 5 to 7 business days more. I asked her if Lenovo kept parts and she said yes but that this part was not in stock. I asked her what the part was and she was able to find that it was the main system board that had to be replaced. I said you have already had the unit for 1 week now at depot repair and never mind the fact that I have been without my computer for 2.5 weeks. She told me that there was nothing she could do and that I had to wait on the part. That is where this case sits at present.
I am very very unimpressed with Lenovo’s service. And furthermore there is no one to talk to about it at Lenovo who gives a care. I really did not know where to air my grievances with how this case is being handled. I thought maybe the forum would be a place. At least others will learn of my dilemma and maybe others have experienced the same thing.
I still like my ThinkPad but the service of Lenovo has become very poor at best. The guy that is my technical manager has had a poor experience of late ordering up some other Lenovo products and he does not want to purchase anymore and these were for new product. They sent the laptop with the wrong software loaded and then said no problem we will send you a new set of disks to load. He refused and said you have to fix this because it was Lenovo’s mistake. It takes time to load software and time is money. I believe we will be leaving the Lenovo field if things continue. I hope and trust that others will not experience the same treatment as I/we have. I wonder if Lenovo will even respond to this post.I had a real problem with wireless performance on multiple ThinkPads with Win7 until I realized there is a new (or maybe changed implementation) power setting in Win7 which was affecting it.
If you go into Control Panel -> Power Options and click "Change plan settings" for your current power plan.
On the next screen click on "Change advanced power settings"
On the next screen expand "Wireless Adapter Settings" and then "Power Saving Mode"
Make sure it is set to Maximum Performance.
Not sure if this will help your particular problem but hope it does. -
Hi all, i can't sync over wifi between my iPhone 4 and Windows 7 64 bit, wifi sync works with the same phone and my Windows 8 machine so the problem seems confined to Windows 7. I've tried solutions from other threads -
Making sure everything is allowed through firewall
Rebooting phone/laptop/router
Disabling ipv6
Disabling all networks except the one curently on
Re-installing iTunes
Restoring iPhone
No luck with any of those unfortunately so i just thought i'd see if anyone else is still without wifi sync after trying those as well and if you ever found a fix, thanks.I just wanted to leave a note that it's working now. I'm not sure if it was the latest iTunes update that got it working or that i decided to start a new library instead of using the one i had backed up on Windows 8 (it didn't occur to me to check using the old library when i re-installed iTunes). But if anyone is having this problem, it might be worth trying again with a new installation of iTunes to see if the latest update works for you, and if not, try using a fresh library instead of a backup (by fresh library i mean discard your old library completely and start a new library, not just restore as new iPhone, a whole new library).

I have installed Windows 7 64 bit version in my MacBook Pro Retina(13") late 2013 model . It was working fine from last 8 months but recently popup window showing as "Windows detected a hard disk problem" once login. Please check the following image.
I have contacted Apple Support team. They have tested the hard disk while booting from Mac OS and all the reports showing as hard disk is fine. Then I thought might be it was some virus and removed the Bootcamp partition and re-installed Windows 7 Operating System. But once updated Windows 7 with latest updates. This message showing again.
Would you please help me out to fix this issue. Anybody faced similar issue? No I think that all drive are really on failure
I've boot with an ubuntu livecd and smartmontools see also the failure.

Now the big question is : Why I've this type of issue with 2 MBA and 1 Macbook pro 15".
Their configurations are the same : windows 7 with truecrypt.
Maybe Windows drastically reduces the lifetime of the Apple SSD drive.
The 3 Mac are used for less than 6 month !!!! -
Does anyone know if Appleworks 6.2 (education version)will run on windows 7 64 bit? I have it running on 32 bit with no problem.
It runs fine on 64 bit. I have it running on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. Just have Quicktime installed first otherwise the install will fail. Sorry for the late reply.

I have the ipad retina display version - I have a BIG issue with this when out and about, that only about 50% of the time will it see my HTC mobile WiFi hotspot - rebooting either, or both devices doesn't cure the problem it drives me MAD!!!!
The HTC hotspot works fine with everything else I connect to it.
Also - ipad will not connect to my HTC via bluetooth. Again, I can connect to everything else with my HTC other than my ipad.
I have to say this is my first venture into Apple products and I have always wanted to get away from my windows based laptop to get a MacBook, the problems I have had (flash player etc) & continue to have (as above) are putting me right off swapping over. I HATE technology that doesn't work and my ipad has been hard work!I stated my ipad as being an ipad2, but I now think it is a 3??? It was new Jan this year and is the 64gb retina display version.
I really would like to get to the bottom on this problem wit mobile hotspots as it is sitting on my desk next to me now and I cannot get it to connect to my HTC mobile hotspot!!!! It might be taking a flying lesson soon at this rate!!! Grrrrrrr........... -
