Window lost in Spaces!

I've had this Macbook pro for 2 days, never used a mac before but have plenty linux experience. I started by fiddling with preferences, and turned on Spaces and Expose, being used to similar under Beryl.
I turned the machine off, satisfied I'd set up a nice and somewhat understated interface. When I came to turn it on the next day, imagine my surprise when I couldn't open any directories or Systems preferences folders! After some more fiddling I found all the open windows by clicking on "Spaces" in the dock. It opened a screen with a dark background and all the windows I wanted on it. But clicking on any one of themdoesn't open it, just sends me back to the blank desktop.
So next I tried to reinstall Mac OS. Drastic, yes, but I cannot afford to lose more hair than the bloodied chunks already removed. Unfortunately, it isn't made as a live cd, or even to boot - you have to double tap (or click) and then run it. But when I open it, there's no dialog box on my desktop. It appears in Spaces limbo, but I can't touch it there.
I've tried everything I can find via google.
Any ideas ppl? Please? Beginner begging here!

It is very hard to guess what you mean by this. Did you try to boot from the system DVD disc that came with your Mac or something else? If you boot from the DVD, you are running its version of Leopard, which is completely independent of anything on your hard drive, including any Spaces or other preferences you might have set up for the normal (or any other writable) boot volume.
A general suggestion: don't think about OS X as if it were a close cousin of Linux. The closest ancestor of OS X is the NextStep OS, a Unix operating system +based on+ the Mach kernel & source code from BSD Unix. However, the OS X kernel is XNU, which stands for "X is Not Unix."
To get an idea of how XNU relates to other kernels, especially those with a UNIX ancestry, check out the brief overview, XNU: The Kernel.

  • I would like to open different Safari windows in different Spaces

I would like to be able to open different Safari windows in different Spaces. They guy at the Apple store told me this was impossible, but I am 99% sure that I accidentally had it working this way before I realized what Spaces was, but now that I have set my Spaces preferences, I cannot get it to work for me.
Ideally, my husband could use one space - he only uses Safari. And I could use the other Spaces for my various applications, including Safari.
    Any suggestions appreciated!

    I do it as follows.
I don't have Safari assigned to any (or all) spaces. I don't have the little checkbox checked at the bottom of Spaces preferences ("When switching to an application...").
In a given space I click on Safari in the dock. This makes it the active application. Of course, if a window is already open in that space it will come to the front. But suppose there isn't a window open. I then ask for a new window (via the File menu, or via command-n). Voila. That window is in that space. You can do this in any space and the windows stay where you created them.
(A shortcut is simply to control-click on the Safari dock icon and select "New Window".)

  • Spaces confusing safari windows (on multiple spaces using command-tab)

Wondering if this is happening to anyone else.
I love spaces but something is messed when using safari windows on multiple spaces. Say I have two safari windows open on two different spaces, after command-tabbing to another app when I try to command-tab back to safari it doesn't always go to my last safari window. That is to say that sometimes it goes to the other safari window, and sometimes it doesn't. It's super unpredictable.
Give it a try, open two safari windows on two different spaces and the command tab to another app and then command tab back to safari - and repeat... you'll find that it will just randomly go to the other window, and then back etc.
Can't think of anything more annoying in spaces... that's got to be a bug.
Anyways, let me know if it's happening to you.
    Jay.

same issue. i have multiple safari windows with multiple tabs on multiple spaces. let's say one space is a rails space; so it has some terminals, safaris, firefoxes, all perhaps with 2 or more tabs. command-tab does not necessarily go back to the window of the app i was just in. whether it's safari or firefox or whatever. this is horribly un-intuitive. come on apple. that's like your thing, right?

  • SQL Developer and Windows XP Profile space

I work in a secure environment where my laptop is fairly tightly controlled. In particular all laptop users are restricted to a Windows user profile space of 20Mb. This is space in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data. This is to stop people building up huge profiles that take an age to download and synchronise with the logon servers.
SQL Developer writes stuff in this directory (as does the Data Modeler and JDeveloper). In particular windowinglayout.xml is growing and is now 1Mb in size. I am running out of space in my profile and it will not be long before I am at my limit. The size of the file seems mostly to be down to the content of the element /LayoutInfo/clientLayoutData/global/view-data which has grown enormous. Much of the content seems to relate to connections and folders and I have tried to delete some connections but that seems not to have made any difference to the size of the file.
Can the content of this file be controlled? Is it possible to relocate these files somewhere else so that they don't cause me a problem? Are there other possible solutions?
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Andrew

Marvellous K, thanks for that. Not only have I done that for SQL Developer but also managed to work out the appropriate files to amend for JDeveloper and SQL Developer Data Modeler. My profile now has a whole 5.5Mb free and my laptop is a happy bunny again.
Combined with finding where my new 11g database laptop installation has squirrelled away it's alert log I think that's enough productivity for one day; my work here is done.

  • Tile Safari Windows in Current Space

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to fix this apple script to only work on the windows in the current Space.
--When in Safari, the coordinates {0,0} refer to the upper corner not including the menubar.
    tell application "Safari"
-- For some reason Safari has two invisible windows
set allWindows to (every window where visible is true)
set n to (count of allWindows)
-- Determine screen size of your machine
    tell application "Finder"
set screenSize to bounds of window of desktop
set screenWidth to item 3 of screenSize
set screenHeight to item 4 of screenSize
    end tell
-- Dividing by zero is bad
if n is equal to 0 then return
set windowWidth to screenWidth / n
    if (n > 0) then
    activate
    set x to 1
-- Position each window in turn
    repeat
    tell window x
    set bounds to {windowWidth * (x - 1), 0, windowWidth * x, screenHeight}
    end tell
    set x to x + 1
if x is equal to (n + 1) then exit repeat
    end repeat
    end if
    end tell
The problem is that if I have multiple safari windows open, the variable allWindows is set to the number of safari windows in every space combined. I only want to tile the windows in the current space, and if I use this script as it is now it will tile them, but it will set their widths to allow for all windows in every space to be tiled along side. This leaves more empty space depending on how many other windows I have open.
Does anyone know how to test how many windows are only in the current space?
I'm terrible with Applescript, so specifics will be very much appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Thank you for your reply, Pierre.
Just in case anyone is wondering, I didn't write this script, I found it somewhere online and then promptly forgot where. However, it doesn't work very well if I have other windows in other spaces, so I wanted to see if I could figure it out.
It's still not working correctly, it seems to work the same way as before:
--When in Safari, the coordinates {0,0} refer to the upper corner not including the menubar.
    set theTargetIDs to {}
    tell application "Safari"
set theIDs to id of every window
set theIDs to reverse of theIDs -- to keep the initial stacking order
    repeat with thisID in theIDs
set index of window id thisID to 1 -- try to change the index value
if index of window id thisID is 1 then -- the window is in the current space
copy (thisID as number) to the beginning of theTargetIDs
    end if
    end repeat
theTargetIDs -- from front to back - the windows that are in the current space
set n to (count of theTargetIDs)
-- Determine screen size of your machine
    tell application "Finder"
set screenSize to bounds of window of desktop
set screenWidth to item 3 of screenSize
set screenHeight to item 4 of screenSize
    end tell
-- Dividing by zero is bad
if n is equal to 0 then return
set windowWidth to screenWidth / n
    if (n > 0) then
    activate
    set x to 1
-- Position each window in turn
    repeat
    tell window x
    set bounds to {windowWidth * (x - 1), 0, windowWidth * x, screenHeight}
    end tell
    set x to x + 1
if x is equal to (n + 1) then exit repeat
    end repeat
    end if
    end tell
Am I missing something? I don't think that script is selecting only the windows in the current space- it's still tiling in every space. Can you take a look?
Sorry for my incapability to help myself. :S
    Thank you.

  • "Lost free space" on TC 500GB; Finder tells 148 GB, Terminal 250?

    Hello,
i wonder about my TimeCapsule 500 GB. About 100 GB free space is lost in space.
If I press CMD-I in the finder, my sparsebundles size is about 148 GB,
if I look using the terminal i find 250 GB.
If I check using the airport-utility, about 100 GB are missing.
(Both, iMac and Macbook, use the same TC for Backup.)
The given size for the macbooks sparsebundle seems ok, about 90 GB.
How to repair, detect, fix? Is there a reorganisation-tool available?
    Thanks for any hints.

    Hi,
Have you received any responses at all to this? It doesn't seem so.
I have exactly the same problem with a 1TB TC and my wife's MB C2D. It had some problems backing up for a while (apparently due to all the wireless issues being reported on these discussion boards - and NOT due to DNSchanger, I've checked). After I managed to get it backed up again by plugging in direct and left backing up overnight, it is now reporting that the backup disk is "almost full". However, there's over 450GB of space left and my MacBook Pro, which also backs up to the same TC is not reporting any issues.
If anyone knows what the solution might be, please let me know.
    Rgds,
    Guy

  • Window opening in Spaces

If I am working in a Space other than 1 and click on a drive icon to open it, the resulting window always opens in Space 1, so if I am in Space 8 I have to go to Space 1 and drag it to Space 8. Very inefficient and inconvenient.
Is there a way of opening the window in the Space I am already in?

We've seen bad Font Cache's cause slowdowns system wide. You could try deleting your Font Cache (Step 6 in the doc below):

  • Moving windows into every space via keyboard shorcut

    Hi all
occasionally I need to see an app in every window, but not all the time. I was wondering if there was a script or a mouse click or keyboard shortcut to move and remove an app or window from every space.
I know I can do this through spaces preference, but was just wondering if there is a way to reduce the steps.
    thanks
    prysm_1

    Hey rakem,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing an on-going issue in regards to the connectivity of your peripheral devices, in this case a USB keyboard. I completely agree that this issue sounds incredibly frustrating. I’d like to ask you a few questions to gather more information on the issue.
Is the USB keyboard in question an Apple device or third-party? If it is the latter, it may be that the USB keyboard requires specific power requirements:
Apple Computers and Displays: Powering peripherals through USB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049
Note: Some USB peripheral devices not manufactured by Apple may have unique power requirements. These may exceed the power allotment on an individual USB port. Those devices may require you connect them to multiple USB ports or may have external power sources that must be present for them to function.
Apple peripheral devices may request more than 500 mA (Milliamps) at 5 V (Volts) from a port to function or to allow for faster charging. Such Apple peripheral devices include:
    - Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive (when connected to supported computers)
    - Aluminum Wired Keyboard*
    - iPod
    - iPhone
    - iPad
Also, I understand that you have tested this keyboard with a different computer, however I’d really love to hear the results of a test with another wired keyboard. This will help isolate if the issue indeed lies with the keyboard itself.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Lost in Space - 720 that is

640 x 480 = 720 x 480 OK... but what about that little black space at the left and right edge of all my DV footage? (GL-1)
Because of this "Lost space" I am forced to compress everything in Cleaner 6 because it offers "manual cropping", which throws all the "divide by 2" simpleness out the window (in the case of 320 x 240 for instance). My actual movie size may start out out at like 701 x 473 before re-sizing and crompressing to 320 x 240.
This has GOT to be screwing things up big time, and most probably the cause of my continually crappy looking compressed movies! ARRRGGHHH!!!
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Best regards
    p.s.
Isn't there a way to grab all my clips in FCP and scale them all at the same time to something like 103%... wouldn't this solve all my troubles??

Just uncovered more info about the frame size difference when using a GL-1. Turns out that the GL-1 does indeed have about 5 to 7 pixels missing on each side! This is a big problem for web video. I cannot believe that I didn't realize this was a huge quality limiter until now. I thought everyone had to crop raw footage somewhat. I've never even heard it discussed before. Turns out all GL-1's have this underscan feature... OK for TV, not for computer video!
Well, the good news is that I just had the 3-CCD imager replaced by Canon for $400 due to a dead pixel... and now it is worth $1000... before the CCD replacement the camera was only worth about $150. Watch for it on ebay, it's clean, in perfect shape, and has the Canon Wide-angle acces. lens!

  • Smb to mount a folder on a windows SAN with spaces in name

i am trying to write a smb mount statement , but the 3rd nested folder has a space in it. what is the syntax to go directly to those folder contents.
    ex. smb://server/share$/folder with a space/another folder
should get me directly to the contents window of the "another folder" after authentication

Be it Mac or Windows, files have to be part of the library collection to play in iTunes.  So if you open a file in iTunes it will automatically be added to the library.  If you don't want it copied to the internal drive, hold down the option/alt key while dragging the file to an iTunes playlist.  There's more elaborate and larger scale workarounds if you need them but they require you stay on top of what you are doing.
If you don't want to have the files added to iTunes, use an alternative player.  I use an older computer.  I use Quicktime to play individual tracks and Cog to play groups of them.
WMA files will not play in Mac iTunes.  Windows Media support on Macs requires third party software.

  • Multiple Windows in Different Spaces

    Hello,
I'm wondering if there is a way to have multiple windows from the same program open in different spaces. For example, I'm working on my dissertation and I'd like to have my primary Word file open in one space and research Word files open in different spaces. Every time I try to move one Word window to a different space, they all move. I've just upgraded to 10.5 from 10.4 and I'm afraid I need a bit of hand-holding.
Is this do-able? How can I do it?
    Much obliged!

Until now I never had the need to have multiple Word windows open in different spaces but your post made me interested and I went to try it myself. I tried Word, PowerPoint and Excel that came with my Office 2008 and encountered that strange behavior only with Word, so it's not an issue related to MS-software in general but Word-specific.
Furthermore in system preferences I tried to assign a fixed space for Word to open and that didn't work either. No matter which space I assign to it Word always opens in the active space, whatever that may be at that moment. Obviously Word can't handle spaces. To me it seems like a bug because the other Office-apps behave the way they are supposed to do. I don't see a workaround at the moment. This answer is quite unsatisfactory, I know, but I hope I could help you anyway by posting my experiences.

  • Adobe Create Suite 4 Design Premium for Windows Lost Application disk #2

Hi, I have the Adobe Create Suite 4 Design Premium for Windows and have lost the Application disk #2 and cannot reinstall this on my new laptop.  I have the licenses and the rest of the disks.  I have called Adobe and they no longer support CS4.  They suggested I try to find someone who has the software and get a copy of disk 2

I'm not seeing anything but individual applications (and it looks like updates, not installers) in the public forders.
You should be able to get the trial by going to Download Adobe CS4 and CS3 Free Trials Here (incl. After Effects) | ProDesignTools and following the directions VERY CAREFULLY. There is no differnce between trial and licensed installers, so you can enter your serial number when asked.
If that doesn't work, send me a Private Message (click my name to go to my profile and see the actions list on the right) and I'll see what else I might be able to do for you.

  • Lost HD space + Unable to install R&R on Win7 x64

    Hi!
I've recently installed Windows 7 x64 on my X200, upgraded from Vista. I can't install R&R 4.3 due to the lack of some unspecified file, which I suppose I miraculously have to guess and add to the same folder as the install file. The error basically says you cannot install because "you have to put 'another file' in the same folder as tvtv...exe" - which of course tells me nothing useful.. If someone know what file "the file" is supposed to refer to, it might actually be possible to install r&r.
    ALSO:
The main reason why I want to install R&R, is because I have at least 130 GB of backup that I cannot find or delete manually; If I measure the size of every folder on my computer, and add them, they take about 100 GB all together. Still my 250 GB hard drive is full. So where comes the other 130 GB from? My guess is R&R, which just isn't working at all.
Maybe it's not R&R. I don't know. I do however know my entire HD is filled with some files I neither can find or delete. I mainly just want my HD space back. I can wait for a R&R patch, but not for the 60% unusable HD space. If someone know just how to remove the old backups or have any idea whatsoever, it's greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    T.

Check it via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) on Snow Leopard:
If that says there's a problem, too, there's likely a problem.
Be sure your backups are up-to-date, and let Apple have a look at it: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

When I use the equivalent of Spaces in Ubuntu, I can pin a window to the screen so that it appears in multiple Spaces. Can I do this in OS X?

in spaces preference you can assign an application to "every space". this will make every window of this application appear in every space. you can not do it with just one window though.
