Window Server Update Patches

Is there any known issues that effect Oracle Databases( 8i, 9i or 10g) when applying Windows Server updates? We are trying to be cautious. Thanks!

I don't know any issues. Anyway is good praxis to do this jobs and upgrades first on test machines (or environments) and to do a database backup before that you begin with such works on production.

  • Windows server update services installation failed the update could not be found

    Hi everybody...
I have tried to install WSUS Role on windows 2008 r2 ent server. its says windows server update services installation failed.
actually the wsus role for SCCM 2007, asper the prerequesite i have finished all other steps, only wsus role is pending.. please help..

    Thanks FinMaky,
    The keys are:
    (1) to delete WindowsUpdate registry keys, and then
    (2) enable/restart Windows Update services.
    (3) also to make sure there's no WSUS policy defining update server is in place
    This resolves my issue.
    BIG THANKS!

  • I am getting a service start and stop alert while doing the windows server updates.

    HI
I am getting a service start and stop alert while doing the windows server updates. Services are wmiApSrv , WPDBusEnum. Can you please help me to under stand why i am getting the service start and stop alert.
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi,
The WMI Performance Adapter (wmiApSrv) service provides performance library information from Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) providers to clients on the network. This service only runs when Performance Data Helper is activated.
This service is installed by default and its startup type is Manual. When started in the default configuration it will log on using the Local System account.
You can try troubleshooting the issue using Clean Boot to check if the issue is related to third-party software.

  • SharePoint 2010 100% cpu w3wp.exe after windows server update desember 2013

    Hi
Using SharePoint 2010 with 2 frontend webservers and 1 appserver:
Our ApplicationPool for our portal workerprocess has for a second time gone up to and stuck on 99% CPU on one of our 2 frontend webservers.
What happens is that this server falls out of the NLB cluster, and the only way to get it back is to log onto the server and through task manager stop the worker process (w3wp). We checked to see what the applicationPool was, and it was for the portal site.
The first time it happened was just after the installation of the following windows server patches: Actuall on the very same day. The patches were installed on the early morning of the 18th december 2013.
The event id for the spesific events show:
18.12.2013 14:45 Event id 7011, Service Control manager:
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the VMTools service.
    and
09.01.2014 08:36 Event id 7011 Service Control Manager
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.
In adition there are a lot of random:
    Event id 105, Warning: NLB:
NLB cluster []: Timer starvation has been detected. This might be due to a denial of service attack or a very high server load. During this period, some connections might fail. If this problem recurs frequently, analyze the threat and take appropriate measures
and/or add more servers to the cluster. An informational event log entry will be logged when the attack has subsided.
I'm suspecting that this was caused because of one of the updates, allthough the "Event id 105", Warning: NLB did exist prior to the patch updates, but would only appear once every 2-3 weeks. After December 18 2013 these "Event id 105"
messages appear about 6-11 times a day!
any one seen something like it?
    I see microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922918/eng
Event 7011, has a workaround to increase the default time-out value for the service to for example 60 seconds instead of 30. Would this be a good solution?

    Hi ,
For the temp solution u can do app pool recycle or iisreset when the cpu usage goes 100%.
And check which worker processor is consuming that much memory and checked related to that web application.

  • Windows Server Update

    Dear All,
    If We are Windows Administrator,
As frequently, I saw that at Clients' computers i saw we always make windows update..
So about Windows Server, Should we update frequently or we have scheduled update it ?
because Updated Windows i always saw that, it's demand to restart machine.. so i am not clear about Windows Server that we should update or no?
I would like thanks for all your help.
    Regards,

Yes, you should set up a schedule that makes sense for your environment.  Servers are just as important, or even more important in my mind, to keep up to date with security patches.  Whether or not a reboot is required is completely dependent upon
the type of patch.  Yes, it often does require a reboot.
What I have seen in many larger shops is the security department reviewing the patches as they are released.  If the security department deems a patch must be applied, it is applied as soon as possible.  It might only be one of 15 patches, but
if they deem it necessary, they apply it ASAP.  Then they will have a quarterly maintenance cycle during which they will apply all other patches.  That way, they may not need to reboot their servers but once every three months.
But, those were business decisions made by those companies.  Each company needs to go through the same process to determine when/how to apply patches.

  • Preparing for Large Batch of Windows Server Updates going back to Aug 2013

How often do updates to Windows servers interfere with a servers performance, services, and/or software?
In other words, after installing updates, what level of validation should be involved in making sure the updates are not causing issues on the server? With such a large batch of updates to install this weekend, I want to be prepared for worst case scenarios
involving systems not booting up, required services not starting, software conflicts, etc. We have a 2008R2 server and a 2003 server to test on, but they're not really representative of the production servers in terms of the roles they play and services they
run. Just to clarify, this is my first time updating Windows servers.

    1. There is a long term mantra: Test updates in test environment before applying updates in production systems.
    2. Situation is complicated a bit by the fact that there are "direct"  and WSUS update packages.
    3. MS states that updates are tested thoroughly. I do believe they do a good job.
    4. I work with Windows for a very long period and I am pretty sure that the quality of software including updates is increasing.
    5. I understand your hesitation, my first updates caused the same tension.
    6. You have a possibility to download updates for "direct" application from catalog update repository. Problem is that you do not know the optimal order of installation. Fortunately information on problems and their solution comes fast from Internet if you
    listen on right channels.
    7. From my point of view the danger stems from some optional updates, namely drivers may send your server to unexpected operation. I do prefer drivers and firmware from server/computer vendor, though some irregularities exists.

  • SCCM 2012 vs WSUS for Windows Server Updates

    Hi,
Can anyone assist with clarifying the benefit of using SCCM 2012 for server patching over WSUS. As far as i understand SCCM can manage updates for third party applications if configured correctly. However if this is the only benefit I cannot see a clear
    reason for using it.
Any information on the benefits of SCCM for server patching would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Michael.

    Hi,
There are many reasons to use SCCM for patching instead of WSUS, I wrote a blog post a while ago listing 12 reasons why you should use it.
    http://ccmexec.com/2012/08/top-11-reasons-why-you-should-use-configmgr-2012-for-managing-software-updates/
    I hope that helps!

  • Windows server 2008 R2 won't update

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 which won't install updates coming from a WSUS server.  All other servers are installing updates fine.  They fail with the code 52D.  If i look at the Application Event log i can see the install start but then
each update fails with the following events and IDs:
    Event ID: 11325
Product: Microsoft Office professional Plus 2010 -- Error 1325. 'administrator' is not a valid short file name
    Event ID 1024
Product: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 - Update 'Update for Microsoft InfoPath 2010 (KB2817369) 32-Bit Edition' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software
packages. Use the following link for instructions on turning on logging support: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23127
Both events have the source as MsiInstaller
Also i have an update for Adobe Reader which is an .msp file which also won't install and gives the error message:
Error 1325.administrator is not a valid short name file.
I have a feeling this has something to do with Windows Installer but i'm unsure how to fix it.
    Please help
    Thanks

The two thread discussed the same error with solution in it. And the following article applied up to office 2007. But the article reviewed at September 12, 2011. Not 100 percent
sure if it applied, but you can have a try.

  • ISE Condition Windows with Latest Patch Installed

    Hello,
I want to comply all the domain computer with latest windows Patch Installed. How we can create this condition under which catagry as mentioned below?
    Thanks.

    Case Solution:
You can deploy domain computer with latest windows Patch  Installed with Configuring WSUS Remediation.
This example shows how to ensure that all employee computers  with Windows 7 have the latest critical
Patches installed. Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) are  internally managed.
Define a posture remediation action that checks for and  installs the latest Windows 7 patches.
    1. Navigate to Policy > Policy Elements > Results,  and expand the Posture folder.
    2. Expand the contents of Remediation Actions.
Select Windows Server Update Remediation, and click Add from the right−hand pane menu.
Enter these values, and click Submit:
    Attribute Value
    Name Install_Win_Critical_Updates
Description Check and Install missing Critical Windows Updates
    Remediation Type Manual
Validate Windows Updates using Severity Level
    Windows Updates Severity Level Critical
Windows Updates Installation Source Managed Server
Installation Wizard Interface Setting Show UI
Note: If you want to use Cisco rules in order to  validate Windows update, create your posture
Conditions, and define your conditions in Step 2.
    2. Click Save when finished.
Note: If a preconfigured condition does not  display under the list of conditions, verify that the appropriate OS has  been selected for both the condition as well as the requirement rule.  Only conditions that are the same or are a subset of the OS selected for  the rule display in the conditions selection list.
Please check below  which may be helpful for you.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 with Exchange Server 2013 SP1 Completely fresh install giving errors signing into EAC

    Hi,
I am struggling with a completely clean installation of Server 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 SP1.  I followed these steps:
    Installed Server OS
    Windows Updates
Added Active Directory Role (This is a single standalone server that would have been SBS until it was dropped)
    Added DHCP & DNS
    Added Certificate Services
Added Windows Server Update Services (WID Database & WSUS Services)
    Windows Updates
    Added Media Foundation
Added File Server Resource Manager and Work Folders
    Added Windows Server Backup
    Windows Updates
Checked all running without errors in Server Manager and performed a full bare bones backup.
    Ran Setup.exe from Exchange 2013 SP1 disc.
    Installed Pre-requisites and then rebooted
    Windows Updates
    Ran Setup.exe from Exchange 2013 SP1 disc.
    Installation completed without errors
    Rebooted
Checked all running without errors in Server Manager.
I Launch Exchange Administrative Center and get "problem with website's server certificate error" (normal on machine with self-assigned certificates).  Click Continue to Website and get:
    Windows Security dialog box:
iexplore - "The server localhost is asking for your username and password.  The server reports that it is from Digest"
however no username and password combination will work:  have tried [Administrator]; [Domain\Administrator] even created a user to no avail.
I believe the issue is somewhere in the IIS configuration because I also get the same error when trying to log into the server website from either the server or another machine on the network.
I have tried the complete installation three times now:  (full disclosure not all of the same features/roles each time).  On the first attempt I got this error immediately and on try number 2 was able to get into the EAC and created the mailboxes
but then it started giving the same error.  The above steps are try number 3.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Andy Halford
P.S. A Follow up which might be significant:  The Default Web Site is not running and will not start (it was previously running before the Exchange installation) and when I try I get the message that Another Website may be using the same port however none
of the others (Exchange Back End or WSUS Administration) are using ports 80 or 443 and I still get the error when they are both stopped.

Could you post the list of sites:
    appcmd list site
The ones listening on port 80:
    appcmd list site /bindings:http/*:80:
    And on port 443:
    appcmd list site /bindings:https/*:443:

  • Silverlight: 2 - WSUS - Windows Server 2008 Core

2 Months ago I reported that Silverlight was being offered by WSUS for Server Core and on the 15th of this month I added a comment to the same thread to ensure that this would not be the case when Silverlight 2 KB 957938 gets pushed through WSUS.
Surprise! (Or not :P) - Silverlight 2 is being offered by WSUS to Server 2008 Core.
And what the following the statement in KB957938 means is anyone's guess:-
Silverlight 2 contains an auto-updating mechanism. By default, this mechanism is disabled in the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) package.
    Cheers,
    Stephen Edgar

    Thanks Andrew,
I lay the blame directly with the WSUS team as it is more than just the Silverlight team, I see 'many' issues with WSUS be it Exchange Server, SQL, Visual Studio, Windows Live and many other updates that simply fail any form of QA process and are deployed to WSUS without proper testing. It typically is language specific, i.e. only 'English Updates' that can blow out from 60MB to 1.3GB and the fact that Silverlight is still being thrown to Server Core as an update is sad that the WSUS team have not worked out a solution for this, some may call this a bug, some may say it is a slight oversight, I say it is a lack of Quality Assurance Testing on Microsoft's part.
With Silverlight 3 just announced at MIX09 the issue now will be when Silverlight 3 first gets published to WSUS if the products it applies to actually fixes this issue and does not report that it is needed for 'Server Core' then the previous Silverlight 2 updates will NOT be superseeded by this update for Server Core and Server Core will continue to report that it needs the Silverlight 2 updates until an update to WSUS is released that 'supersedes' the Silverlight 2 update requirements for Server Core.
So the WSUS team need to release a hotfix for the WSUS, Server Core and Silverlight issue in advance to even thinking about publishing Silverlight 3 to WSUS otherwise Server Core will continue wanting the SL2 updates OR it will report that Server Core needs the SL3 update.Cheers,
    Stephen Edgar

  • In Place Upgrade WSUS windows 2008 R2 into windows server 2012

    Hi Team,
i had question. I have windows server 2008 R2 and installed WSUS role at that server.
Can I do inplace upgrade into windows server 2012 std edition?
is there any impact into wsus services?
    thanks

If it is not a DC, upgrade should be easy. And there shouldn’t be any problems.
The question was about upgrading a WSUS server, and regardless of whether it's a DC or not, it most emphatically will not be problem free. In fact, it's flat out not possible! On WS2012 the upgrade will be blocked if WSUS v3 is present,
and on WS2012R2 it will corrupt the WSUS installation beyond repair requiring a reinstallation of the operating system.
    Please review the
WSUS v6 documentation regarding upgrade requirements.
    Warning
Upgrade from any version of Windows Server that supports WSUS 3.2 to Windows Server® 2012 R2 requires that you first uninstall WSUS 3.2.
In Windows Server 2012, upgrading from any version of Windows Server with WSUS 3.2 installed is blocked during the installation process if WSUS 3.2 is detected, and you are prompted to first uninstall Windows Server Update Services prior to upgrading Windows
    Server 2012.
However, because of changes in Windows Server 2012 R2, when upgrading from any version of Windows Server and WSUS 3.2 to Windows Server 2012 R2, the installation is not blocked. Failure to uninstall WSUS 3.2 prior to performing a Windows Server 2012 R2 upgrade
will cause the post installation tasks for WSUS in Windows Server 2012 R2 to fail. In this case, the only known corrective measure is to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows Server 2012 R2.

I checked my Internet Connection, and no problems with that, Wndows update works fine.
    Regards

The reason these solutions all work is because previously these machines were WSUS CLIENTS, and thus looking to the (sometimes no longer present) WSUS SERVER to find the WSUS Dynamic Installer update.
By unlinking the GPO or moving the server to the Computer Container (not OU, btw), you effectively revert that machine to being an Automatic Updates client, and it can then obtain the WSUS Dynamic Installer update from Automatic
    Updates.
You can also achieve this objective by:
    1. Run gpupdate /force (to reset the 90 minute GPRefresh timer).
    2. Edit the registry and set the HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU "UseWUServer" value to ZERO, which also disables the machine as a WSUS Client.
From there you'll have at least sixty minutes (minimum GPrefresh interval) to install the WSUS Role, after which the machine will automatically revert back to the previous "WSUS Client" status -- which, presumably, is to be a client of itself.
