Windows 10 fails on newer dualboot Windows 8.1/Linux, worked on older Windows 7.1/Linux
I did not have any trouble upgrading my windows 7 / linux hp laptop, just my windows 8.1 / linux hp laptop. I have 3 hp laptops, actually 4, one died. I am familiar with dual booting and grub. Thanks for recommending the paper anyway. Will windows 10 run on my dv6 7245us laptop? The upgrade always fails on this system as described in my original post.

Has anyone sucessfully upgraded an HP Envy dv6 7200 series laptop to Windows 10 from WIndows 8.1? I have updated all of my HP drivers to the latest versions and Windows 8.1 is fully updated. I have tried installing from the Get Windows 10 icon, the media creation tool, and a Windows 10 x64 iso with no luck. I get through many phases of the upgrade, the system reboots, and then a large circle displays 0% briefly, the system reboots, and then a window displays the following information... We couldn't install Windows 10 We've set your PC back to the way it was before you started installing Windows 10 0X80073B92 - 0x20009 The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during PREPARE_ROLLBACK operation The system is dual boot Windows 8.1/Linux. Note that my years older HP laptop upgraded just fine and was also a dualWindows 7/Linux boot system. Please help! Thank you.

Your posts was great you were not whining about your rights to file complaints to the FCC or FTC etc. One of the best I have read.
And I am not trying to sway you from your phone choice. If you looked at my avitar it shows apple iphones. But I use and have used androids and not Windows phones.
However your numbers of windows phone users all leaving over the issue is miniscule in the number of users of Android and iOS devices.
I have written many times I wish all the devices get updated like iOS devices do. But at present that is not happening
No bashing, no adversarial post just a little common sense is all I use.

Log In Failed - Enter New Password
Hi Guys,
I've been using TB for a while now, along with the several email accounts, including: Hotmail, Outlook, Mail.com & to a lesser degree Supanet !?
Every now and then, when trying to Send, I get the message "Log In Failed - Enter New Password". I usually just click the red cross a couple of times, & it goes away. I never need to input a new password,,,,
but, today its one of the Mail.com accounts. I've been on their own site and sent the message. There isn't a problem with Mail.com, or my settings.
As usual, it worked fine until today.
I tried inputting the current p.w and creating a new one, but to no avail.
How do I fix this please ?

I did as you suggested, although after I clicked "manage Search Engines" there was no Show search suggestions to be clicked on that Window. If I then clicked on Search there was an option to select "Suggest searches as type" and "Automatically search when you select from the drop down list".
Both of these options were already selected so it's still not working.
This first happened in Firefox 4. it's still has not been resolved. -

Anyone know how I can update/unbrick this iPod? It's useless. It's stuck on the screen that says connect to iTunes. iTunes doesn't know it's there. My computer doesn't know it's there. It's not the USB port.

Last time it was a missing driver for iTunes but iTunes says nothing new is needed. Help appreciated.Let me try this again. My computer said my iPod needed an update. I clicked ok. iTunes said it was doing the update. I browsed the internet. I came back to it after it was done, and it said update failed, no new drivers installed. Now my iPod touch is a brick. I cannot use it for anything. You know that screen that shows the usb cable, a white arrow, and iTunes? It's stuck there. No amount of pushing the sleep/wake button and home button will convince it to go to any other screen. When I go to 'My Computer', it does not recognize that there is anything there. It is not the USB port. Everything was fine until the update tried and failed.
I am not installing iTunes (piece of crap software that it is) on the other computer in my apartment.
I have exhausted the articles that sort of go with the problems I am having. They all assume a non brick iPod. Mine is a brick and therefore those articles, including the one you linked, are not relevant.

I've was able to do the Apple Hardware Test First Aid the indepth xtended one. The result was all's good.
Now then with the Safe Startup...
It gets to the login screen (no red text about welcome to safe start, or some such).
On the log in screen I have 3 choices:
Myself
My wife
Guest
I can get to the internet with Guest login
I can log into the MacAir as My wife.
As for loging in as myself.. Screen goes white then reverts back to the log in screen with the 3 choices..
Logged in as my wife, I did the recent "big" OS update. (Takes quite awhile)
But still. I can't log in as me!
So as I can log in as my wife, is there some way some fix I can do.
Should I (if I can) reload Lion from the TC?

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

I have a macbook pro4.1 and the sound chip in it failed. My speakers and microphone no longer work. Does anyone know of an external speaker and microphone set that plugs into the USB port so I can continue to use both of these functions and not have to pay to have the entire main board replaced. Preferably something under $100.
I don't think you're likely to find a set of external speakers that come with a microphone and plug directly into a USB port. There are USB audio cards that look like tiny flash drives but have microphone and headphone ports in them, to which you can connect a typical two-plug Windows PC headset with a microphone, or else you can connect external speakers and a stand-alone microphone. Those adapters typically cost under $10. I don't know anything about the quality of sound that can be expected from them.
I have a Griffin iMic, which is much the same idea but larger, a bit more expensive (retail~$40), and perhaps delivers somewhat better sound quality (I hope so, but I don't know because I've never had occasion to try one of the little ones).

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Storeand turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

Just got a new iMac and iDVD just wont work, from creating a new project, or opening an old one, or trying to share from iMovie (HD)
If I try to do anything nothing seems to happen and when I close the program a window does appear and from there it just freezes.
Have deleted and reinstalled iDVD, repaired permissions, all up to date in my on software updates...any ideas?

• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)

emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

Problem with new DB app, report+form, report works great, form says ORA-01403: no data found
I have a new table, the PK is a varchar2(5) column, when I allow the default query in the report to do its work, I get all the expected data. when I click on the edit icon (pencil), I get an error screen indicating ORA-01403: no data found. I'm hosed! This was generated by the app! no changes were made to anything in the app, except to turn off tabs at create time. I even left the default name.
My ARF is hitting the right table with the PK column, but finds nothing. I have the "success" message showing me the PK value. What could be going on here, and how can it be addressed? Today is the 1st time I have seen this matter.
I'm running 4.22 as the workspace admin, I have other apps that work fine (to expectation), my browser is FF22, though I plan a downgrade to 18. The form page, under the ARF, allows for the display of a "success" message and a "failure" message. I have seen my "success" message appear, but it didn't show my key field as a brought-back value (which I told it to include), and I think now this is not relevant any longer. Debug the page and see which process, item or step is actually failing. You could be running some other process on the form page and that could be what actually fails. Treat it as if the ARF works correctly and see what else could be happening.
I can add the detail that my 1st message was based on testing with a table where I set the PK as data type VARCHAR2, but in more testing on the actual app (whose URL piece is above) I am using a PK which is CHAR.
The result of the debug effort is that APEX has built its own query for pulling back the row in the ARF, and it is joining on my PK field to an APEX item P_ROWID which I don't think I created. Nor does it appear to offer me any avenue for correcting it. debug snippet: where "VCODE" = :p_rowid; end;
