  • How are you exporting 1080i60 (or 50) and how are you viewing it?

So I've had some bad experience working with 1080i60 and I believe the ways I choose to view it (MAC MINI to HGTV and MAC BOOK PRO) are not optimal. Therefore I'm very interested how are you are exporting 1080i60 (1920 or 1440) and what methods are you using to view and get the BEST possible picture quality?

It really depends on what you want to view your content on. One of the problems of viewing content on computer screens is that we sit so close we tend to see every little defect and imperfection in the video. That being said...
You need something to play the file back. This can be a taped-based camcorder with the necessary outputs or it can be another device. There are countless "Network Media Streams" out from companies like D-Link and Linksys, as well as hard drive based solutions from a company like Western Digital. These devices will all play .mp4 files, which you can easily create through Export with QuickTime Conversion or using another applications such as Compressor or MPEG Streamclip. Two other excellent options are the XBox 360 and the PS3. Personally I own the PS3 because it'll play a wide variety of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 (h.264) material, including transport streams, program streams, and files. The Apple TV is another option, but is hamstrung by it's lack of power, and therefore can't play anything higher than 720p @ 24 fps or 540p @ 30 fps.
My recommendation is a PS3, even if you don't like gaming and you can swing it in your budget. Blu-ray support plus media streaming (via UPNP, which you do have to add seperately to your Mac, but Media Link costs $20) make it ideal. Plus it is robust in power and won't hiccup at high bitrate files like the Apple TV will.
When I encode (I use the Adobe Suite to encode but the bitrates can be similar for QuickTime) I encode with h.264 at 25 Mbps. High yes - but I've got nothing to lose since it's my own network and my own disk space.

You could have more 5 computers authorized if you ever, for example, reformatted a hard drive or replaced a hard drive without deauthorizing the computer first. Apple's system would see that as a different computer, even though you don't. There's nothing to be afraid of in deauthorizing everything and the reauthorizing what you actually have. You won't lose any data. Mistimp is correct, they can't tell you which computers are authorized.

  • How are you liking your iBrick? Ive had mine for 79 hours now!

    Listen everyone this is important.
    DONT WAIT FOR AN E-MAIL!!!
Call them as many times as you can because there is most likely something wrong with your account!
If you continue waiting for that e-mail you have a better change of getting hit by lightning 40 times in a row on a blue sky day. Because it WONT COME since there may be something wrong with your account.
Here is what happened to me- it wasn't pretty. A loyal customer of AT&T for 7 years... the first to ask them about the iPhone in January, the first in line, and the LAST to get activated.
After calling them, I found out these problems- each from a different call, each from a different person.
1- My business account froze the system and prevented me from receiving an activation
2- I was on the old "blue" network instead of the "orange" network. I've been a loyal AT&T customer for 7 years and didnt find this out until now, this also prevented me from getting an e-mail (and they are now charging me $40 more a month to have the exact same plan... then add $30 more per month for the data plan!!)
3-After all the rigmarole over there, the AT&T reps forgot to activate my data plan... whups!
4-There was a random system error associated with my account which also prevented the e-mail
5-They had the wrong sim card going in for activation somehow.
    and the granddaddy...
6-The idiots at the cingular store accidentally deactivated my sim card in my iPhone.
Wow- I'm glad AT&T doesn't perform open heart surgery, because I would be dead as soon as I set foot in the waiting room.
My advice if your phone still isnt working... Go to your AT&T store and ask them for a clean blank sim card and start over. I did it and my phone popped on within 5 minutes!!! Waiting around for 79 hours for something that I resolved MYSELF in 5 minutes!!
I hope this helps someone if anyone.
I hope this disproves that the switch theory applies to EVERYONE ON THE PLANET
    the iPhone is beautiful
      Windows XP

I finally got my number ported over from Sprint this morning, but it took a phone call to AT&T to make it happen. I received my email two days ago stating that my Sprint number was transferring to my iPhone and that I'd receive an email when the transfer was complete. In the mean time, I could use my iPhone for outgoing calls but I would be unable to receive them. So, I kept my Sprint phone on so I could receive phone calls.
Turned out that the hangup was me keeping my old Sprint phone on so I could receive phone calls. Within a minute of turning it off, I received an SMS message stating that my number transfer was complete and I could make calls as well as receive them on the iphone. The AT&T support tech called my iPhone to confirm that it would in fact receive calls.
Had I known this two days ago... (sigh).

  • How are you immersing your kids in technology?

My kids are kind of techine nerds like me.
My son (12) wants to start up a Kickstarter or similar page to fund a new  super computer and software needed to start his own Twitch channel.

Spicy moms and dads, this thread is for you! (Okay, I guess it can be for spicy aunts and uncles too...)Children nowadays have no shortage of high tech toys to play with... I've seen three year olds with iPads and seven year olds that teach their parents how to use a laptop. And don't even get me started on the ages of some of these kids that have smartphones. All of this is a true sign of the times. But in addition to the basic technology, there are so many different tools to teach kids about the technology they're using and how to code. One fun tool I came across this week is something calledLocoRobo. LOOK HOW CUTE IT IS!What child wouldn't want to learn with this thing?! Even I want to play around with it. So what does this thing do? It's goal is to teach kids how to become programmers. LocoRobo is just a start up but they're...

  • How are you keeping your Apple keyboards clean in student labs?

    Thanks!

I might be able to manage the software with ARD - but how do you clean out the keyboards? It's like they were built as dirt collectors.
It's pretty much impossible to keep computer lab keyboards clean unless you use a keyboard skin. Otherwise, you just have to wipe them down and blow them out every now and then and hope for the best.
Can ARD be used to admin. Macs on different vlans within a Win 2000 & 2003 server env.?
Yes. No special "tricks" are necessary; just set the ARD scanner to scan the appropriate range in the VLAN so you can see and add the computers and it should work without problems (we have multiple VLANs here and ARD works just fine).

  • How are you handling your business listing on maps?

  • How do you keep your users/groups in sync with latest developments?

As there seems to be some reorganization happening with regards to the core system users and groups (with systemd develpment and whatnot) I feel somewhat uncertain about how I should set up my users, which are needed and so forth, seems every update of the filesystem package as of recent leaves me with changes to the users/groups in .pacnew files that needs careful merging to not screw up the system.
There is of course https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Users however this is usually outdated (it currently only has one systemd user while the most recent passwd has five). Last time I broke my system was when I tried to apply changes suggested by the wiki page, rather then trying to figure out the changes from the .pacnew files).
Unfortunately I don't feel confident enough with the most recent changes to fix the wiki-page myself.
Right now my method is rather ad-hoc, I read the .pacnew files and make some guesses as to what users/groups in my files were added by other packages and should be left alone, and what users/groups were deleted/changed/added from the actual filesystem package because of changes in for example how the lastest version of systemd works. As I've made wrong guesses before, I feel there might be a better way to deal with this.
    How do you do it?
What are the best sources of updated information for what currently is the best practice way to set up the core system users/groups?

I find it very helpful to know what has changed in the files from last update to the current, so I can see which of the differences to my files are from the package update and which are custom changes of other packages or myself. So I either compare a new *.pacnew file to the last one if I had saved it (what I do for some files), or I go and check the diff of the package update. To do that, I go to the package page for filesystem, click on View Changes under Package Actions, find the current version and follow its link. There one can see which files got what changes.
For example the filesystem 2014.07-1 update had a change in the group file, input:x:97: got added, and also some changes in gshadow.

  • When and how are Notes synch'd between devices?

I've created a few Notes on my MacBook and trying to get them all on my iPad.
They're not all being synched with icloud.com though which I think is necessary before they synch with other devices.
Only three are showing up in iCloud.com and on the iPad so I know it works, but I can't figure out how to get the others to.

Actually, synching of Notes works with other accounts as well, not just iCloud.  But each account needs to be set up on the other devicess you want to share with.

  • When and how do you use audio?

We create Captivate slides for software training. Currently
they have no audio (meaning narration, we do have mouse clicks and
other sounds). Some of our clients are requesting audio for the new
training that we're developing. It seems like a lot of effort for
not much benefit because they want the option of turning the sound
off if necessary. To give them the full benefit of the training,
with or without sound, it seems to me like the audio will be
nothing more than reading the caption to them.
Can those of you who are using audio give me some ideas of
    how you're using it?
    Thanks for your help.
    Philip

For many of our Captivate-based courses we show a summary of
    the points
on screen, often as bullet points, while the narration reads
    more
detail...pretty much emulating the whole PowerPoint scheme (a
    presenter
standing up talking to bullet-point slides).

  • HT2518 how do you know your user name and password?

I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to move data from my PC over to my new iMac.  It wants a name/password.  Everything I've tried (which I've always used) doesn't work...???!!!  Help!  How do I find out my name/password for Migration assistant????

Password for the Mac. It is trying to write to the Mac hard drive in an area that is restricted and only access by typing in the Mac Admin password.
Or at least that is how I see it.
    Good Luck.
    PS:
Migration assistant really doesn't work. Even when it looks like it is working it leave you with unintended consequences.
Also there is Nothing on your Windows PC that the Mac can use. No programs or settings. The only thing you can use on the Mac from Windows are your presonal files, Music, images and office data files.
So it is easier to just copy them over to the Mac then using MA, as you may have found out.

  • How do you change your user name associated with the app store on the iphone 3G. When attempting to update, it is using an old email address that has since been changed at the apple site. The problem is that my phone does not seem to recognize this.

I have exausted my ideas, and turn to the forum, prior to paying for something that may be a 2second simple fix. Please help if you can. Let me know if you need more info to understand my dilema.
    Thanks.

Apps are permanently tied to the Apple ID used to purchase them.  You will always be asked for the password associated with this ID when updating apps, regardless of whether or not you are using this ID for current purchases.  The only way to stop this is to delete the old apps from your phone and iTunes and repurchase them with your current ID.
Edit: to change the ID used for future purchases on your phone, go to Settings>Store>Apple ID, tap the ID shown, sign out, sign back in using the new ID.  As explained above, you will still be prompted with the old ID when updating apps purchase with the older ID.

  • How are you outputting your 24fps projects to tape?

    Hi There,
I am just looking for any input on how everyone is laying down there 24fps projects to tape? We have found a method that seems to be working - but is very tedious and not perfect...
    Here is the lowdown:
1080p23.98 ProRes HQ sequence -----> outputting to Kona LHe Card -----> To Sony DVW-A500 D-Beta Deck.
At this point, we are getting the Kona card to add the pulldown because of the dramatic increase in quality over FCP - BUT because we are going from a NDF timecode to a DF format there are the obvious sync and drift issues.
So here is what we did:
    - created a sequence with the exact same settings as our normal FCP output sequence (1080p23.98) and dropped in an hour of bars with TC reader.
    - Output this sequence to tape.
    - The use the deck to go to the all the in and out point timecodes we will need - ON THE DECK ITSELF. Then check the broadcast monitor, to see what the timecode on the bars reads and insert a marker in the timeline for our inpoint and outpoint.
This way, although our output sequence looks a little funny in FCP (say for example, one minute or bars will actually look 2 frames short) by the time it goes to tape with the pull down inserted, it ends up the right length.
Now, the problem we are having is we can only seem to get as close as being a half frame from perfect. Our 1 frame two beep will either enter a half frame early or a half frame late, depending on where it is located in FCP - up until now we have always just accepted this, but it can be frustrating because it makes inserting any changes in an episode not possible. This is the same regardless of whether the tape was pre-striped and episodes inserted OR Assembled to tape.
If anyone has any alternates that are working better for them, it would be greatly appreciated!
NOTE: Outputting a 29.97 NDF tape is NOT a valid option - because aside from commercials, this would never be accepted by a broadcaster.
    Thanks again.

No such thing as a "half frame" in video. Audio, yes, video...no. Full frames only.
This is what I used to do:
    http://lfhd.blogspot.com/2006/09/online-workflow-overview.html
This is what I do now:
    http://lfhd.net/2008/10/22/timecode-calculator/
Figure out what my NDF timing has to be to hit the proper DF timing when outputting. But if I had to meet Discovery/NatGeo specs of needing commercials to hit on 00 frames...then I wouldn't work in 23.98 NDF timelines...nor shooting formats.

  • HT1203 How do you share between users with Windows 8

I have two user accounts on my computer.
How do I share my music between them with iTunes with Windows 8.

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:
