Windows 10 Preview on Dell Venue 11 Pro Tablet

Windows 10 Preview on Dell Venue 11 Pro
Hardware
Dell Venue 11 Pro (7130/7139) tablet computer with:
Intel Core I3 4020Y processor (3MB Cache, 1.5GHz Dual-Core)
4GB 1600MHz memory.
128GB SSD.
Lexar 64GB MicroSD memory card.
Lexar 64GB USB memory card. (2 – used as needed, connected
via USB 3.0 port).
10.8 inch IPS Display with FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution with 10-pt capacitive touch.
Intel GT2 Graphics.
Dell Active Stylus.
Intel(R) 7260AC Dual-Band 2x2 802.11 ac WiFi + Bluetooth(R) 4.0
Dell Wireless 5808E (LTE/HSPA/EVDO) Mobile Broadband Card - Verizon
Factory installed OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64 bit).
Download
Downloaded Windows 10 Technical Preview Enterprise Edition (64 bit) image file from:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview.
Download time < 15 minutes. File size 3.888GB.
Download was smooth and apparently error free.
Transfer of OS to USB Memory Card
Rufus 1.4.10 application program was used to create a bootable USB Memory Card and to install the OS on this card. (http://rufus.akeo.ie/). The process was easy and was error free.
Install Windows 10 on the Dell 11 Pro.
A Dell factory backup was done to a bootable USB memory card. (Dell does not ship the Venue with any OS or other software on external media).
The Rufus generated USB Memory Card was inserted into the Venue’s USB 3.0 port.
Windows Explorer was used to display the USB files and to select and execute “Setup”.
The Windows 10 installation asks if one wishes to keep the existing application programs, drivers and other current files. The recommended answer is YES. This was an unusual experience for me because the typical requirement is to do a clean install from
a bootable device that is read on computer power up. It was very nice to be able to preserve the current application programs and drivers and to do the installation from “inside of” the old OS.
The installation process was quick, there were no error messages or any obvious problems.
There was no requirement for user responses during the process.
The first tasks on initial start-up of the OS are to check for updates and to provide logon information.
The update requirement depends on an operational connection to the Internet. In our case, the connection is by WiFi and there would normally by no way to initiate this without having been logged on to a running version of the OS. It is a typical “cart before
the horse” problem. Fortunately, it is possible to defer this step which is what we did.
The next problem is creating the logon. Dell’s default on display intensity is dimmer than is desirable and, at least on this tablet, it is difficult to see the contents of some of the logon fields. You cannot change the display intensity until after
a successful logon. The “CAPTCHA” step is especially difficult and annoying. The dim display makes it tough to recognize the alphanumeric characters which may be on angles, overlapping, indistinct and of varying intensity. One has to guess about some of the
characters, to change to different CAPTCHA selections and to repeatedly attempt a logon. My recommendation is not to use CAPTCHA in any part of the software.
Microsoft encourages the use of a “Microsoft system wide” user name and password.
There are some advantages to this, but, as others have pointed out, it has some risks.
Touch screen virtual keyboards are infamous for problems with accidental selections of adjacent keys and unintended character repetitions. Fortunately, the Venue 11 has a large sized virtual keyboard and there is less chance of key selection errors
than is true with the small sized displays. The Venue does has problems with the unintended character repetitions. All of this causes difficulties with initial password setups in which the entered data are hidden with stars or other characters and one also
usually has to enter the new password twice. A few software developers have started offering users a check box option for display of the entered password information. This is really helpful for reducing the number of times that one might need to enter a new
password and then repeat it for confirmation.
Initial Experience with Windows 10
There have been no known problems with missing or incompatible drivers. I don’t know if any drivers were updated between 8.1 and 10 except that there was a somewhat lengthy automatic install of a new driver for the cellular modem. This device and its software
have not been evaluated as yet. I do not know if the software enables regular cellular voice operations. It is unlikely that it enables the automatic transfer of voice communications between WiFi and Cellular networks, as is available from some vendors.
Access to the Control Panel, Command Prompt and other administrative functions is now possible via the “Start” icon display once one realizes that you need to scroll the display fully downward and to the right in order to see the “administrative” icons.
In spite of the relatively large Dell Venue display (10.8 inches), there are still many fields that are small and/or are too close together to be reliably selected by finger touch. Some of these fields cannot be selected at all by finger touch. The
problem can be reduced by increasing character and display sizes and by the use of an Active Stylus. Use of a mouse plugged into the USB port is a temporary solution if one doesn’t have a stylus.
There have been many instances of failures to respond to icon selections by repeated finger presses. The reason for this behavior is unknown. The problem can be temporarily cleared by a soft restart.
In some fields, autofill correctly displays a list of choices, but the application program crashes with an unknown error message if you touch select one of the choices.
There is a hardware “Windows button icon” that is located on the front rim of the computer, halfway between the right and left sides of the unit. This is a very poor location because it is easy to accidentally press the button while holding the computer
in one’s hand. The button should be recessed and should be located on a side of the computer.
There should be a mechanical button to increase or decrease screen intensity. There should be a user selectable option to control ambient light regulated screen intensity.
This isn't necessarily a Windows 10 issue, but there has been a recent marked increase in advertisements that are added to the results of Google and Yahoo searches, e-mail traffic
and other Internet transactions. The latest twist is that unless one accepts an advertisement's initial suggestion - usually by clicking on a YES or OK icon - then the display is locked and you cannot close it short of ending the task or doing a soft reset.
There is no choice to Cancel. Selecting the X close icon or close on a drop down box doesn't close the advertising Window display.

I'm running 9879 on my Venue Pro 11 and cannot get the stylus to work.
Did you test that scenario? For such an early release of the OS, everything seems not too bad. But I really would like to be able to test OneNote with ink support!!

  • Windows 10 Prieview on Dell Venue 8 Pro

    Hello,
I am one of those goofballs that installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview on my Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet.  Windows 10 preview runs great on the tablet, however I really miss the ability to swipe down a window to close it.  In fact, I miss that
so bad, that I want to go back to Windows 8 on the tablet.  This tablet has no USB slots or wired NIC's available.  So my only option is to have the Windows 8 .ISO on the desktop and try to run the setup from there.  I copied over the .iso and
also extracted it on a folder on desktop.  Then I tried running setup, Windows installation starts but ends at 95% stating Windows Setup Failed.  Any ideas?

    Hi Admaster,
For reinstall Windows 8/8.1 on Dell venue 8 pro, here is the information from Dell official website:
System recovery options in Windows 8.1 on the Dell Venue 8 Pro and Venue 11 Pro Tablet
(Please note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the information may change without notice, Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.)
From the Knowledge Base at Dell, it seems to reinstall Windows 8, other than the refresh option, the only way available is to use
    Dell Backup and Restore software.
Besides, you may find $Windows.~BT under C drive (the system drive), please make sure to show up the Hidden file, please  locate to the
    $Windows.~BT folder and find \Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
and setupact.log, then upload them into OneDrive and post the shared link here.
Further, we may consider seek help at the manufacturer side and see if they could offer any further help.

  • Dell Venue 11 Pro Tablet Docking Station - Dock Firmware won't update or output to any monitor

    Hi,
Just bought a Dell Venue 11 Pro Tablet Docking Station and it won't output to any monitor via HDMI or Displayport.
I've tried updating the firmware to V02 and V03. I get the message:
    Current On-Board Firmware is 0.41.9
Do you want to update with firmware version 0.41.23 (V03) 0.41.19 (V02)
When I select yes I get the following error:
Error: Please unplug the power connector from the Dell desktop dock for 15 seconds, then plug the power connector back into the Dell desktop dock and try again.
This I keep repeating but it will not update.
The model number of the dock is: K10A001.
The only other thing I notice is that the power adapter does not appear the same as any of the pictures I have seen and is a Dell 74VT4 (65w) which seems be for a Dell XPS 18 (1810).
Please help as I think this may need to be sent back.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
I've exactly the same problem. I've also the model number K10A001 and the current Firmware 0.41.9, and it is also not possible for me to flash the docking station.
This is also problematic because only one monitor of the two connected monitors works. An this monitor shows only a picture, if it is plugged, after the dockingstation and the Venue 11 Pro has been started.
I think there is maybe an improved flash utility required in order to allow to flash the docking station? If some one had succeeded please respond.
    Thank you

  • Can't drag icon from customize screen to tool bar on Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet.

On my Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet, win 8.1, I am unable to drag the 'download' (arrow) icon from the customize screen on to the tool bar.
I was able to drag the 'search' icon from the screen to the tool bar.
Why can I drag one, and not another?
    Thanks,

  • FireFox not responding after downloading to a Venue 11 Pro Tablet

I have a Dell Venue 11 Pro Tablet running 64 bit Windows 8.1. I can download Firefox just fine...but when I open the program it automatically goes to "Not Responding". How can I get this to work on my tablet.

We're sorry to hear that Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!

  • HT201272 Download apps/games to the Dell Venue 8 Pro (Windows based tablet)

My daughters each received a Dell Venue 8 Pro (windows based) tablet for Christmas. I was told that the iTunes apps and games can be transferred to this tablet. I am having trouble doing this. I can pull up the iTunes accounts with all the apps online, but not play or use them on the tablet itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's normal. You can use your Windows tablets with Windows 8.1 to store your device data with iTunes, but you cannot use iPhone and iPad apps. They are designed to run only in iPhones, iPads and iPods touch with iOS, not in computers

  • Screen rotation doesn't work on Dell Venue 11 Pro

I'm running Windows Technical Preview for Enterprise Build 9879 on a Dell Venue 11 Pro. It has the Intel Core-i5-4300Y processor and Intel HD graphics chipset.
All devices are recognized in Device Manager, but the screen does not rotate if I turn the tablet.
Is anyone else having issues with screen rotation?

I have Dell venue 11 pro 5130 version with the atom processor. And I think my tech preview just updated to the 9879 Build... I have only had tech preview installed less than a week.
The previous build I had (and I have no idea what the build was) Did rotate the screen just fine, but now I have to manually toggle the orientation.

How are you booting? PXE or USB stick?
Try this..in WinPE open up the cmd prompt and type this in:
    diskpart
    list disk
That will tell you what disks that are seen. Usually the hard drive is 0. You can confirm by the total space of it. IF you see a disk 0 that matches the size of the hard drive in the tablet you can also try this and see if it helps:
    select disk 0
    clean
    Reboot and try again.

  • OSD to Dell Venue 11 pro 5130 tablet

    Hi,
I am setting up a deployment of Windows 8.1 x64 to Dell Venue 11 pro 5130 tablets from SCCM 2012 R2. I am docking the tablet and using the dock USB port to boot from a USB stick into the SCCM Boot Image. the image loads and allows me to select the operating
system for deployment and then begins the build process by trying to download the WinPE environment.
At this point I get an 0x0000007F error. on checking the logs I can find an entry relating to unable to find a volume that can be used for a bootable O/S.  I have ran diskpart within WinPE and can see the disk, clean it, partition it etc. but still wont
    work.
Looking for some pointers, I can build the device from USB with Windows 8.1 ISO.
    Thanks

the Venue Pro 11 is a UEFI device and that means you'll need a UEFI capable task sequence (with uefi partitioning), in addition, if using USB media the boot image must match the architecture of the UEFI device, so if the device is 64 bit you must use a 64bit
boot image on the USB media,
in addition, the USB media must be formatted with Fat32 (which it will be if you use Configuration Manager to create the boot media) otherwise UEFI USB boot will not work.

  • Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 WiFi becomes disconnected during idle or waking from sleep

I have a Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 in which the wi-fi consistently becomes disconnected when either the tablet is idle for a period of time, or if it has woken from sleep. Period of time varies -- more than 5 minutes, but less than an hour.
When wi-fi connection is lost, the only way to connect again is to reboot. Not much of a solution. USB 3.0-to-Ethernet adapter is rock-solid, but there isn't much point in having a tablet if you can't be wireless at some point.
    Things I've tried:
    - Optimized the intel driver settings roaming agressivenes: medium-low, Throughput booster: enabled, Transmit Power: highest.
    - toggling airplane mode, disabling/enabling via Network Connections
    - creating a custom wireless profile
Really, not sure what I can try next. I've used other Windows 8.1 Pro laptops, and none of them have been this spotty.
If anyone has a solution out there, I'm game to try. Otherwise, I'll be returning this back to Dell as a defective product. There seems to be issues about earlier versions of the Venue 11 Pro, but I haven't been able to find much on the 7140 version.
Fully updated Windows 8.1 Pro. Using Intel dual-band Wireless AC 7265 adapter with v17.13.11.5 of the driver. BIOS version A03.

Hi Jennifer,                                                                                                        Saturday 4th April 2015
This whole process from order date 14th March 2015 to now has been frustrating, my mistake was to get one of the sales consultants on chat to check the saved cart, had compatible accessories for this tablet. From then on, after multiple quotes in the end he still managed to get the address wrong and missed putting screen protector on the order, multiple emails and phone calls the following week finally got address changed but couldn't get screen protector added to order in the end I ordered it over the internet. I should have cancelled order when I wanted to.
What should have been a simple process is now a nightmare the Tablet with screen protector needs to be replaced has not worked properly since unboxing and first switch on , spent many hours of installing updates, contacted technical assistance last Thursday they did a remote hookup changed some things worked for a little time.
    Totally disappointed

  • Dell Venue 11 Pro (5130 64Bit) BIOS update in WinPE 5.1 x64

I have encountered an issue while trying to upgrade BIOS on Dell Venue 11 Pro (5130 64Bit) in WinPE 5.1 (64-bit). To pre-empt any questions why not use BIOS update option available from boot menu: while it may be quite elegant solution for home use, it doesn't fit well in production environment where the action needs to be repeated hundreds of times, custom audit trail required and some other (automated) post-upgrade tasks need to happen.
After running the executable I receive the following error message:
The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present.
This would point to 32/64 bit application incompatibility and/or limitations of WinPE itself. I have following packages present in my image, as well as CCTK HAPI installed:
    Feature Name
    SMB1Protocol
    WinPE-HTA
    WinPE-WMI
    WinPE-NetFx
    Microsoft-Windows-NetFx-Shared-Package-WinPE
    WinPE-PowerShell
    WinPE-DismCmdlets
    WinPE-SecureBootCmdlets
    WinPE-SecureStartup
    WinPE-TPM
    WinPE-Scripting
    WinPE-WDS-Tools
    WinPE-EnhancedStorage
Unfortunately I cannot run the update from a "proper" copy of Windows as we need to upgrade BIOS for one of our customers without installing OS (we are shipping devices with default Dell preloaded version of Windows). The way I see it, before I am forced to go down the route of upgrading BIOS from boot menu, I have two options:
    - Get a grip of what the exact issue is in x64 PE. Would anyone be able to help out here? Is this something I can fix by adding any components to my PE image?
    - Try running update in x86 PE (I believe the executable is 32-bit despite "64bit" string in the name). Currently I can only boot using x64 image as BIOS is set to UEFI mode. I am reluctant to change boot mode to Legacy just to give it a go. Will I be able to safely go back to UEFI without any additional recovery work? I am not intending to change the contents of the HDD. Also will cctk be able to change boot mode back to UEFI automatically, or will I have to implement it as a manual step at the end of the process?
Due to other restrictions and time scales involved Windows To Go is not an option as well. Any help with this will be much appreciated.

The issue is that the subsystem required to support 32bit apps does not exist in the WinPE 64bit, and there is no way to add it.  You'll either have to use WinPE 32bit, or update your BIOS after the OS has been installed.  Other manufacturers provide x64 BIOS update executables, so I don't know why Dell can't get their act together and do the same.

  • Will Dell Venue 8 Pro work with photoshop?

I was think about buy Dell Venue 8 Pro, but I want to use photoshop CC as sketchbook on my new-to-be portable tablet. I want use it on the go and in bed...
I don't plan to use tablet as final look.
    Will it work?
If you have used it.. How was it platform?
Because I already own firepro desktop that work very well with photoshop CC with too many layer.. ( and zbrush - up to 16 million polygon per sub-tool hee hee)
So I can finish off the job on desktop after tablet.

For those that find this post...yes, Photoshop CC does work extremely well on Dell Venue Pro 8. The only compromise is screen real estate--but aside from a few panel tweaks--everything is fine and surprisingly useable. We ran Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 on a DVP8 and compared it with a Mac Book Pro 2013--the DVP8 (32gig Version) was more responsive and extremely fast (though rendering required by After Effects not recommended DVP8). Make sure to get a Sandisk 64 MicroSDXC (http://amzn.to/1wtydtu)--and the tablet rocks. The programs I use frequently on Dell Venue 8 Pro are: Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Indesign, Muse, Lightroom, Story, Audition and Media Encoder. While we have tried Premiere (projects and media on a USB 3.0 connected external)--some rendering processes were compromised--but not uneusable.

  • Dell Venue 8 Pro - won't charge (again)

Has anybody had any luck with Dell actually fixing their Venue 8 Pro tablets?  We got 2 tablets for our kids at Xmas 2013.  In August of '14, I had to send one in for repair because it would no longer charge.  It is now, again, not working, and the second tablet is also not able to charge without the plug being torqued just right to make a contact.  There are NUMEROUS complaints about this, yet I have found nowhere that Dell will accept responsibility for making such an inferior product and correct the issue.  Has anybody else had any luck with Dell repairing their Venue 8 Pro?  It's funny, when I called in, they said, "no, it's not a common issue".  Well, I have to call <profanity>.  I have 2 of them, and BOTH are totally useless now.  I called, hoping to at least get the one they already "repaired" fixed again.  They said they would be happy to for $284.  Why would I spend that on such a defective item, when I could apply that towards a REAL tablet.  you know, one that works for more than a year.  I must say, it's very disappointing.  Seriously, if it wasn't a faulty design, what are the chances that of the two that we own, BOTH would have the exact same problem.  Sorry Dell, but it is inferior craftsmanship and horrible customer service which will keep me, and others from purchasing from Dell any more.  And, please, don't tell me how to use the provided charger, etc.  I am talking about the chargers that came with the tablets, plugged in the correct way (even though the port is not made for the adapter you provided).  And yes, I verified that the outlets were in proper working order.  16 months for a tablet.  My IPAD has been running for 3 years.  I guess I know where to get any further tablets from.

If I recall correctly:  start the tablet and, as soon as the Dell logo appears, shut it down by pressing the on-off button down.  Do this 3 times and the tablet next should boot you into the recovery process options.
