  • No Start Menu, removed and added User Account then no "Built In" Apps - Build 1049

So quick history, was having problem with start menu not working under build 1044 for the second user I'd added to the machine (Microsoft account). Rebuilt using "Remove everything and reinstall windows". Seemed to resolve the problem for the newly
added user and was still working under the original user (also Microsoft Account).  Then along came build 1049 and now the same start menu issue occurred for the original user account.  So, as both were setup as admins, removed the original
user account, restarted, checked all data removed and added the account again.
First attempt added the account as a local account then added the Microsoft account after login, result = start menu working but no "built in" apps (store beta, insider app etc).
So removed account again and added again, this time using Microsoft account immediately, logged in and exactly the same result.
    Any ideas how to resolve?

You cannot use the Start Menu logging in as anything that would be in the BUILTIN\administrator group on the computer.  I had the same problem when I added the machine to a domain, thus domain admins is in the BUILTIN\Administrator group.
The reason being that the Windows 10 Start Menu is an appxpackage, and you can't run appxpackages using the built-in administrator account.  As is the case for example with Windows Store.  It doesn't however give you a warning message, you
just click on the windows button and nothing happens.
This is just total madness imv.  It kind of made sense when all the appxpackages where apps, but now they include parts of the OS, the OS is essentially non-functional when you log in using anything in the BUILTIN\ administrator group.
If you really want to blow your mind, go into PowerShell and run the command: get-appxpackage|remove-appxpackage
If you run that on Windows 8.1 it will remove all the bloatware apps for the logged on user.  Run it in Windows 10 and it removes various parts of the OS for that user as well, such as the Start Menu!

  • Windows 8 Start Menu Shortcut

    Howdy,
Prior to Windows 8, I was creating a folder with company name in the Start Menu root and then a subfolder in it for each product.
    Start Menu Root :: XCompany :: Product1
    :: Product2
    :: Product3
Using the same architecture in Windows 8 and 8.1, it just recognizes root folders in Start Menu and disregards sub folders.
It means that all my product shortcuts are shown in XCompany folder and ProductX folder is disregarded.
    I checked in Win8 they're here:
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
Is that behavior expected? Should I force my installer disregard XCompany root folder and just create ProductX folders in the Start Menu folder?
    Or solution is something else?
    Thanks for advise.

    Hi,
In Windows 8, it can allow 2 level navigation on Start screen/ All apps. And yes, we have to create ProductX folders in the Start Menu folder
We must create shortcuts for both your XProduct folder and the sub items under this folder.
    For example:
    For local user, Under folder:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

  • How to rebuild Windows 7 start menu?

Having had a virus and removed it successfully I am left with an odd problem.
The virus, amongst other things, seems to have altered the start menu removing the "pinned" programs which is not a problem but also removing the contents from the folders in "all programs" for instance under "Microsoft Office" there is a sub folder called "office tools" (empty) but nothing else.
The programs are all still there and work they just aren't available in the start menu. There must be a way of rebuilding this menu without having to reinstall every one of the very many pieces of software on the machine.
    Suggestions welcome.

Start Menu common to all users is C:\users\all users\microsoft\windows\start menu.
For each user C:\users\username\appdata\roaming\Microsoft\window s\start menu.
By default these are hidden folders.
Open using Windows Explorer and create shortcuts, copy, paste etc.
A search pulled up this [http://softzilla.blogspot.com/2011/04/free-windows-7-context-menu-editor.html] No idea if it is of any use

  • Windows Classis Theme - Windows Classic Start Menu / Save Files Dialog

MS, please keep a way back to the 9x interface!
Really anoying that the Windows Classis Start menu (Windows 9x etc.) is not available in Win7.
(and apparently no option "Always Show All Programs" option is available and the subprograms are listed in the same window which makes it a long list)
People and commpanies want the option to go to the old-familiair Windows Classic (9x) interface!!!!
We know it, it works and it suits the purpose: why change!
Furthermore in a company environment all files are saved in a directory structure and not in the 'favorites' folders in the user profile. So please...make a simple classic w7 interface like XP (with a simple Save File Dialog) and not a Christmass Three with bells Interface like W7.
[i think that's one of the reson that ofiice 2007/vista doesn't sell as it should. I'm affraid it is a marketing strategy of MS. But unfortunately I think it drives more people in to alternatives like openoffice etc.]

The XP and later interface has always looked like something designed by Fisher-Price to me. Much more annoying, though, is the inability to go the Classic Start Menu. This is sufficient to cause me to stick with XP until it simply can't handle the then-current software. By that time, Linux should be able to run all Windows progams; it is getting closer to that now. Are you listening, MSFT? I'm an MCP with other certs, and, unless you give the option for the Classic Start Menu and a menu that shows all programs (not just a "personalized menu), XP may be my final Windows version.
I really do not understand Microsoft's lack of logic here. They changed the interface in Office 2007 with the ribbon; millions upon millions of users were proficient with the interface prior to that, and MSFT says they have to learn a new one (I agree with Frank1977 here that it's driving people to OpenOffice). That sounds like a New Coke decision to me. Maybe they have an Apple or Linux mole in there, seeking to give bad advice purposely (for any Biblically literate readers, think "Hushai the Archite", and the advice he gave Absalom).
I have defended Microsoft to many Microsoft-bashers at work, but this is becoming more and more difficult to do. And I'm losing my incentive to do so. PLEASE, Microsoft, add power and abilities, as you are doing, but don't arrogantly insist on forcing professional users to learn a new (and less capable) interface.

  • After reinstalling operating system Windows 7, I lost apps and can no longer sync with Outlook 2010?

After reinstalling operating system Windows 7, I lost apps and can no longer sync with Outlook 2010?

    apps are stored in
    C:\Users\<your account name>\Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications
their extensions are .Ipa  you can try doing a search on your harddisk
unless you formattet it when you reinstalled
but an app can only ever be bought 1 times on an appleID so if you try to buy them again it will give you a free download of the app and not charge you
about sync then if you connect the ipad and click info tab and set it to sync your outlook data it should sync without any problems

  • Cannot reach Windows 7 start menu when using auto-hide

I have my Windows 7 start menu set to auto-hide. When I am using Spotify in a maximized window, it is not possible to make it appear by moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen. Can someone reproduce this?

    Hi mqh,
the blog you got this info from assumed that the file "Microsoft.WindowsAPICodePack.Shell.dll" is in the path you are running the Add-Type command. Trying to acquire
this file can be tedious, since the links are dead, I finally used NuGet in my Visual Studio to get it.
If you use this to add the library to your current VS Project (create one if necessary), you can find the .dll in one of the project subfolders.

  • Windows 8.1 start menu button and charms frozen

So sometimes when I try to click the bottom-left start icon, it suddenly does not work. I hover over it but it doesn't change color nor
work at all, but after i restart explorer.exe from task manager it starts working again. This happens randomly, and can happen again in a short while after restarting explorer.exe. I have this same problem on another computer running Windows 8.1 and I have
not installed anything extra on that computer yet. I saw someone say disabling OneDrive syncing would solve this problem, but even if I did that it is still occasionally freezing up. This has been pestering me a while now and is a bit problematic since even
event viewer doesn't have any information on it.
The problem doesn't seem to be explorer.exe as a whole, since the taskbar works and windows open and close properly. I can also view and use
explorer.exe normally (browse files and folders and open programs). However, the charms do not appear and the start button in the bottom-left doesn't work at all, i can't click it to get to the start screen nor right click it to show the menu. In other words
it seems to be the start menu freezing, but there's nothing in event viewer that would indicate a problem. Restarting explorer.exe fixes this problem temporarily, but it keeps happening every now and then.

To anyone experiencing this, it is a bug in Win 8.1 which I can replicate at will.
Reinstalling your system as suggested by MS engineers will not fix this.
To force the bug to appear:
    1. Grab a desktop Icon (recycle bin, any shortcut) and move this up to the top left hand corner without letting go of the mouse button. Drop shortcut anywhere on desktop. Without an Icon the mouse pointer would initiate the recent apps.
    2. To check that the first step has worked, try and invoke charms by moving mouse to top right hand corner.  If Charms do not appear then the bug has been triggered.
    3. Now move mouse over start button (no click), move away then back again. Now the start button is locked.  If you unlock the taskbar you can move it to any other position (top, left or right) and the start button works.  Move taskbar back to the
bottom and the start button still does not work.  Only way to get it working again is to restart window explorer in task manager.
To avoid this happening all you need to do is disable recent apps corner.
    1. Right click desktop.
    2. Click Taskbar and Navigation
    3. Click Navigation tab in the properties window
    4. Uncheck "When I click the upper-left corner, switch between my recent tabs."
Now the bug cannot be triggered as above to make the start button stop working. You have to remove this feature which is pretty hopeless on a desktop anyway.  Its better than restarting Window explorer every time.
I can replicate this on any desktop or laptop, fresh install or old. Not sure about any touch screen machines. I can also trigger this in VMPlayer\Virtual Box and the Modern IE VM images that MS provide.
Now the MS engineers can replicate this on their machines, and maybe if we are lucky they will FIX it!!!!
MS please acknowledge that this is a bug.
Maybe the issue is due to the windows button not being redrawn on the screen once triggered as it still works when taskbar is moved (graphic card drivers). Could not find anything use full in the system logs.
Just noticed also that the charms also breaks if you drag an Icon up to the right hand corner. Once triggered Charms stops working, start button is not affected with the above work around configured.
MS please read this and reply.

  • Windows 10 Start Menu not updating with the newly installed apps or programs

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise Preview inside a Windows 8.1 Hyper-V instance.  I've been installing a lot of different applications for testing & I've come across a strange problem.  When I install a new application, it doesn't show up
in the start menu.  If I search for the app, it comes up & I can launch it, pin it etc.  Next time I log out & log back in the application is there.  I first noticed this when I used Programs & Features to add OneNote into Office
    2013.

Aha, that may well be what I experienced too. The first thing I
installed on Win10 was one of my own products, and while it installed
and worked fine, and the start menu items could be found by searching,
my product directory was not showing up under All Apps.
A day later I installed another product, and after that I noticed that
I could see both this new program's directory and my own. A subsequent
product installation also showed its program directory straight away.

  • Windows 10 start menu not working, app settings gone, startup programs not starting (no tray icons) KB3034229 installed

Hi, even after installing KB3034229 my start menu is gone, search does not work so I don't have any good way to start applications. I am worried because they say update fixes this error, but not for me :-(
Most of my settings are also gone. I cannot revert back (getting error about moved account, but I did not move my account location after installing technical preview)
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Actually, I decided to take a look around in the Event Viewer and saw that there were errors in the "Application" section under windows logs, with the message stating "Activation of app (Insert app name here with a bunch of characters after
it) failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information." And a more specific error to do with ShellExperienceHost.exe  http://pastebin.com/c62Fm8xz
. (Cant figure out how to change the font back, so ill stick with this one) All the errors in the Application tab in windows logs that are "Application Errors" all come from the faulting module "Windows.UI.Xaml.dll" After trying to open
the start menu, an Application error (http://pastebin.com/WVktd0Ti) (Suddenly the font fixed itself, okay.) appeared. This is all on build 10041. The logs in "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" all contain something along the lines of this
"Activation of the app Microsoft.Cortana_8wekyb3d8bbwe!CortanaUI for the Windows.Launch contract failed with error: The remote procedure call failed.."
Hopefully this contains useful information to help fix this bug.
    EDIT:
After looking up the error code from the log in "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2798317/) It seems to be a permissions issue maybe? I'll update this if I find a solution.

  • Work Resources and Windows 8 Start Menu

Is there any way to get the Work Resources folder content to automatically Pin to the Start Menu.

    Hi,
I'm afraid there is no way to pin or map the content to Windows 8 Start Screen or desktop. Only two methods are allowed to access the RemoteApp, Desktop Connection and Web Access.

  • Windows 10 Start menu cannot be resized

The start menu can no longer be resized and it only looks weird when removing/uninstalling all the tiles. This was optional in the earlier developer preview and should remain optional. This may or may not be the wrong channel to submit this feedback but
I accidentally uninstalled the Windows Feedback app and could not revert.
Windows 10 will not be any better until the start menu is back to the same function as < Win8. Why not just do a modern implementation of the start menu without rebuilding its concept?

I don't think this forum will allow anyone posting method(s) of reverting "expandable" Start Menu of build 9926 back to "resizable" Start Menu of build 9879.
