Windows 10 Start menu not work in build 10049, restart take logn time

Same for me, I've started with win 8.1 updated to 10042, then to 10049. Menu start isnt working, and reboots take like 20 mins. Any fix?

Hi,
For Start Menu, please re-register it and test if it can make any difference, In the administrative
Windows PowerShell window, type the following command and hit Enter key:
Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + “\appxmetadata\appxbundlemanifest.xml”)}
Or I recommend you test whether this issue happens in another user account.
For the long reboot time, I recommend you keep latest Windows updates and drivers for all deivces, do sysytem maintance to improve the system performance, such as disk clean up, disable startup programs to decrease the reboot time, test whether issue persists.

  • Windows Insider Preview Start Menu Not Working: Build 10061

I've been using the Desktop tech preview for some time now. It seemed that with each build, the apps would bleed outside the window frame without scrollbars, ergo, making the apps not useable(except for browser). Then, starting with 10041 the start menu
wouldn't work. There is no way for me to open it except through the notifications button. Now with build 10061, none of the buttons work. Only firefox, which I have added to my taskbar. Although, edge nor IE will open either. So ATM, only the task manager,
firefox, folder button, and the volume control button seem to open/work. I have tried restarting and switching profiles, bu nothing seems to work.
I want to get away from win10. Before, on start up it would ask me if I wanted to revert back to win8. Now it doesn't ask anymore. How do I get back to win8?

To go back to Win8, you need a recovery media or an installation media for Win8.
Did you make one of those before you installed Win 10 TP over Win 8 ?
May I interest you to give Win 10 TP another go ?
ON the 29th, a new build has been released. It's build 10074.
You can install it via Windows Update or downloading the ISO which is also released at the same date.
My suggestion is to download the ISO > burn it to a bootable DVD or an USB with at least 4 GB > use the bootable media to do a Clean Install.
I suggest a clean install to make sure your new install will not "inherit" any "baggage".
In short, you will start fresh.
    Here is the download link for Pro (non-Enterprise) ISO;

Notice that it has a new product key :6P99N-YF42M-TPGBG-9VMJP-YKHCF
You shouldn't need it. But, just in case it asks for it.

  • Windows 10 Build 10041 start menu not working

I have installed the Windows 10 Build 10041 update yesterday. But since then I can’t leave my computer till it sleep automatically. Otherwise my computer will complete died and I need to press the power bottom to restart Windows.
But at that time, the Wndows start menu is still working.
However, this morning I find that my computer start menu is not working, and the search bar, Windows key, notice board icon at right side and internet icon is also not working.  I have use the control panel to check the problem but
it could not find any faults.

    Hi,
What's the type of your current user account? Built-in Administrator account or others?
Generally speaking, you can try to create a new user account to fix this problem. If no use, please try to use system restore to revert your system to a former normal time point for test.

  • Windows 10 start menu not working, app settings gone, startup programs not starting (no tray icons) KB3034229 installed

Hi, even after installing KB3034229 my start menu is gone, search does not work so I don't have any good way to start applications. I am worried because they say update fixes this error, but not for me :-(
Most of my settings are also gone. I cannot revert back (getting error about moved account, but I did not move my account location after installing technical preview)
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Actually, I decided to take a look around in the Event Viewer and saw that there were errors in the "Application" section under windows logs, with the message stating "Activation of app (Insert app name here with a bunch of characters after
it) failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information." And a more specific error to do with ShellExperienceHost.exe  http://pastebin.com/c62Fm8xz
. (Cant figure out how to change the font back, so ill stick with this one) All the errors in the Application tab in windows logs that are "Application Errors" all come from the faulting module "Windows.UI.Xaml.dll" After trying to open
the start menu, an Application error (http://pastebin.com/WVktd0Ti) (Suddenly the font fixed itself, okay.) appeared. This is all on build 10041. The logs in "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" all contain something along the lines of this
"Activation of the app Microsoft.Cortana_8wekyb3d8bbwe!CortanaUI for the Windows.Launch contract failed with error: The remote procedure call failed.."
Hopefully this contains useful information to help fix this bug.
    EDIT:
After looking up the error code from the log in "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2798317/) It seems to be a permissions issue maybe? I'll update this if I find a solution.

  • DragAcceptFiles Working in Windows 10 TP build 9926 But Not Working In build 10049 and build 10061

This is a cross post from
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a63519d4-ba7a-46c1-bb34-ad034b836964/dragacceptfiles-working-in-9926-but-not-working-in-10049-and-10061?forum=WinPreview2014General.  The moderator suggested I post this here:
My company has a software product that accepts dragged items.  In all versions of Windows from XP through Windows 10 build 9926 that functionality has worked fine.  However, with build 10049 (possibly 10041 which I did not test thoroughly before going
to 10049) and now 10061 that functionality stopped working.  The application calls DragAcceptFiles to enable drag drop messages.  In addition, either ChangeWindowMessageFilter is called on Vista or ChangeWindowMessageFilterEx is called on Windows
7 and higher for the messages WM_DROPFILES, WM_COPYDATA, and WM_COPYGLOBALDATA.  This was working fine on Windows 10 build 9926.  Now when I attempt to drag an item to our software product, I get the "Don't" symbol (circle with line through
it) and no WM_DROPFILES messages are received.  The application is unchanged with only an upgrade to the Windows 10 build performed.  As a sanity check, I created a brand new VM running build 9926 and the functionality worked fine.  I then upgraded
the VM to 10049 and it stopped working.  The following day I upgraded to 10061 and it is still broken.  Is there are new filter or restriction in place since build 9926 on DragAcceptFiles that would be stopping the traditional drag drop procedure
from working? This is very frustrating because there is a dearth of information on Windows 10 API changes and since this appears to be some kind of recent change, I am out of ideas of where to look for answers.  I can duplicate this problem on the older
platforms by simply calling DragAcceptFiles with the second parameter set to false.  In that case, on Windows 7 for example, I will get the "Don't" symbol just I am getting now in the Windows 10 TP with the argument set to true.

DragAcceptFiles is now working again in 10074 so whatever the problem was, it has been fixed.

Probably you need to install updates, particularly KB3036140.
Since you cannot use Start menu to go to Windows Update, follow this method given by Insider Hub.......
Checking for updates may fix this problem. To check for updates without the Start menu, do the following:
    Select the Internet Explorer icon.
Type http://update.microsoft.com into the address bar and select
    Enter.
If you are prompted to run a control, click
    Yes.
This should bring up the Check for updates window. Install updates.
If no update is available, or the available updates don’t fix the issue, restart the device–this should make the Start menu appear. To reboot without using the Start menu:
Hold down the Windows key and select L to lock the device. Swipe up or select
Enter to open the sign in screen. Select the
Power icon on the log in screen to restart the computer.
    OR
Hold down the Windows key and select R to bring up a command prompt. In the prompt, type
    shutdown –r to restart.

  • "ThinkVantage Tools" Jump List in Start Menu not working properly

    Hello All:
I have a very new (3 days old) W520, model number 4270 CTO.  This product arrived with many unique and useful ThinkVantage Tools installed.
For reasons I cannot comprehend, the jump list attached to the "ThinkVantage Tools" entry in the start menu (the frequently used items portion of the start menu) is not opening up to show all of the various ThinkVantage Tools that are available, instead; it is opening up to show what appears to be 'recent places' I have visited using the OS (in other words, kind of like the Windows 7 'recent places' shortcut'.
Can anyone provide me with a suggestion about how to solve this problem, and get the jump list to display the various subsidiary tools, rather than the recent places I have been to with Windows Explorer?  Photo showing the problem is below.
    Michael
Notice the problem with the subsidiary jump list...

    Serge:
I need a little bit of help figuring out exactly what to remove, and where to go to get the replacement application to re-install.
I took a look at the various Lenovo applications listed in the "Programs and Features" control panel, and all of them appear to be specific tasks (for example, Power Manager, Access Connections, Active Protection, etc.).  There does not appear to be an entry on that list for "Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools".
I also took a closer look at what the entry in the start menu (pictured above) references.  When I examine the Properties for this entry, it shows the following reference: "C:\Windows\explorer.exe ::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}\2\::{A8A91A66-3A7D-4424-8D24-04E180695C7A}\Provider%5CMicrosoft.Base.DeviceDisplayObjects//DDO:%7B00000000-0000-0000-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF%7D\cat{8AA6B0C2-14A6-4da8-BF36-F7D93ACE9ACE}".
Selecting the 'Open File Location' button from the Properties sheet refers me to the explorer.exe application that is contained in the 'C:\Windows' folder.
I would be very grateful if you would tell me exactly how to remove and reinstall this item - in particular, where should I go to find the installer package to reinstall it?  I have looked at the W520 Device Driver File Matrix, under the 'ThinkVantage Technologies' heading, and can't find any entry that explicitly says "Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools".
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Windows server 2003 not working after computer hard restart

Hello, the following problem did occure. I was logged to windows server 2003, working on it, when my pc suddenly frozen, so i had no other option, than to make a hard restart of my pc. From that time, when a log into the windows server, i can see the server

Can anyone help me, how to solve this problem ?
    Thank you for your answers

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that Windows Server 2003 unable to start correctly.
You may try to restart the computer, when you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press the F8 . select the
Last Known Good Configuration, in order to start the computer by using the most recent settings that worked.
Or you may select Windows Advanced Option –> Safe Mode, check to see if this was caused by faulty drivers, programs, or services that start automatically.

    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx

  • Start Menu Not Auto Updating After Installation of New Applications

// Also reported via Windows Feedback Tool //
After the installation of several applications, the new Start Menu does not necessarily automatically update to reflect the added programs.
The application’s folder is properly installed under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs, but it will not show under the Start Menu until the user logs out and logs in.
Interestingly enough, this behavior is not consistent.  Some applications installations are immediately reflected while others are not.
In this particular example, LibreOffice 4.3 was installed.

    Hi @Senttu
    Thank you for your reply.
You can try running the file checker to look for and try to repair corrupted files.
    Go to the command prompt.
Right click and run as administrator.

  • Why doesn't my TestStand deployment installation show up under my Windows start menu of my target machine?

Why doesn't my TestStand deployment installation show up under my Windows start menu of my target machine?
I have successfully installed working deployments to target machines. However, I was expecting to see the installation listed as "My TestStand System A" in my start menu, but it is not. Am I misunderstanding something here?
Also, if I peform a different second deployment to the target station like "My TestStand System B", all of the LabVIEW files from my previous installation for "My TestStand System A" disappear from the target directory (c:\Program Files\My TestStand System A).
I am using TestStand 4.2.1 Professional on the development station with Windows XP and LabVIEW 2009.

    Thanks Paul,
That solved my second problem and inspired me to search deeper for the answer to my first problem. The answer is in the "Distributed Files" tab, "installer properties", "Create a Program Item" checkbox:
Wouldn't it be nice if this was automatically checked by default for the main sequence files? Wouldn't it also be nice if "Upgrade Code" was automatically regenerated by default whenever we saved the *.tsd file under a different name?
    Thanks again,

I'm getting this problem too. I have been running iTunes for a few years with no problems until recently. WHenever I try and open it I get an error message saying "An error occured while attmpting to create the directory: I:\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\de.lproj\EQWindow.nib" with the options to retry or cancel. Retry just results in the same error message occuring again.
I've tried other programs on the I: drive and they work fine, I've also followed the 'Removing iTunes Configuration Files' and some of the other apple support guides with no success. My windows updates are fine.
