Windows 10 Technical Preview installation stuck in a restarting loop

Hi all,
I had win10 running pretty well until I had to roll back to Win8 which was originally installed on my laptop when I purchased it. Long story short, the recovery had some issues and it gave me an error about some unexpected error during installation. So I
changed the setup.exe value of one of the registries. Now, the error is gone but it keeps on restarting after the "Installing Windows 10 Technical Preview" screen. any ideas???
thanks!
--Ben

Hi Yolanda,
thanks for the reply.
I did various things. i think i picked the option to go back to previous windows version which turned out to be the previous Win10 build. so i tried again with something else (i forgot which other options i picked on the Recovery menu...) This is when it
crashed and failed to reinstall windows. it showed me a screen with different options, one of them was to go back to the manufacture version. so i picked that but it told me to insert the DVD which didn't come with the laptop when i purchased it. so i
tried again with the previous windows version option and this is when the error occurred. here is the error and how i was told to fix (http://heresjaken.com/the-computer-restarted-unexpectedly-or-encountered-an-unexpected-error-during-installation-of-windows/)
after changing the registry, the error is gone but it's in a loop of attempting to install windows 10 TP and restarting windows. i can't even get to the BIO to change the booting options.... if there is a way, please let me know, i can download the ISO from
the internet and boot it off from there.
i do understand this is a preview version and my laptop is not my primary computer. i had some issues with the Cisco AnyConnect client. so i had to roll back.... yes i do have all my files backed up.
thanks!

  • Windows 10 technical preview installation has failed

    Hi,
I currently use Windows 10 build 9860 on my computer and in another partition of my hard drive I have windows 8.1
Today I was trying to update my build trough the update and recovery>preview builds, but I was getting this error message: "Failed to install the new build, please try again later. 0x8024200D"
After that, I tried to download the offline .iso of the new build and running the setup, every was looking fine but when the installation got to 25% it came back to my desktop and a message appeared: "windows 10 technical preview installation has failed"
Any way that I can solve this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I tried a bunch of different steps:
    - Do a clean boot
    - Use command WSReset.exe on run box
    - Command prompt:dism.exe /online /cleanup-image scanhealth and restorehealth(When i use restorehealth gives me this error:0x800f081f)
    - Create a new admin user and try to install update
    - rename softwaredistribution
    - Command prompt: powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.XML
None of this worked so far for me.
I went to C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log and got this:

  • Windows 10 technical preview Installation fails

I've been trying to install the Windows 10 technical preview on my pc for 4 times. It seems that all installation works perfectly; checking system installing etc. When installation is done and I log in again. Nothing has changed; it is still Windows
7 what is running. Can I see somewhere what went wrong? btw no error massages appear, no damage is done and windows 7 is running properly again. Can you assist me with this matter. If my pc is unsuitable for installation of Windows 10 how can I delete the
messages that "Windows 10 technical preview is ready" form the update centre? please your reaction. Best regards Johan

    I don't have a Win 7 computer anymore.
So, what I say from here on is through memory..........
Click Start button > at the search box, type cmd > top left, right click at cmd.exe > click Run As Administrator >you are now at a Command Prompt with Admin privileges.
At the flashing prompt, copy/paste this ........ sfc /scannow
    > press Enter key.
The scanning will start and it will take a long time.
When it finishes, it will give a report which will be one of the 3 below......(paraphrasing )
    1. No integrity violation.
    2. Found corrupt files but unable to repair.
    3. Found corrupt files and repair successful.

  • [Forum FAQ] How to show Windows Update in Control Panel in Clean Installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926

    Scenario
If you performed a clean installation of the new Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926, you would find Windows Update is only available in
Settings and is hidden in Control Panel by default. However, Windows Update is still available in Control Panel if it is an upgrade version of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926.
    Solution
After the comparison of the two different version, the differences is the following registry:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled
    In clean installation version:
    In upgrade version:
The method to make Windows Update show in Control Panel in the clean installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926:
Edit the REG_DWORD value of IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled from 1 to 0.

We’ve seen a few forum posts talking about changing registry keys to alter the update experience we shipped in Technical Preview build 9926. There are a couple of reasons that we don’t recommend doing things like that.
First, the default experience is what we’ve tested across not just the Windows 10 team, but across all of Microsoft before we released it to you. That doesn’t mean that you won’t still find bugs, but it’s definitely the code that’s been most thoroughly
tested. Changing things back to older versions is risky because the combination of those old settings with the rest of Windows 10 is not something that’s been validated or supported, so we can’t predict the side effects. It’s possible that changing registry
settings related to update could cause a machine to no longer be able to get new updates or Technical Preview builds.
The other reason to avoid changing the default update experience is that a lot of update-related code is actually being re-written in order to scale across the variety of different device types Windows 10 will support. Since Technical Previews are
a work-in-progress, some code that may still be in build 9926 won’t actually ship in the final version of Windows 10 that we provide to all our customers, so trying to re-enable that code temporarily won’t provide a way to accurately assess Windows 10’s update
    capabilities.
We want to hear your feedback! We’re sharing Technical Preview releases early so we can understand exactly how customers are using our software and make sure we are designing our experiences to address those scenarios. The more
specific the feedback, the more helpful it is for us – saying “I hate the new Windows Update UI” isn’t very useful, but when we see “I need to be able to tell Windows Update to grab updates from WU itself and not from my internal corporate server, so the new
Windows Update UI is painful for me”, we can actually understand what changes we could make to solve those specific problems. We can’t promise to fix everything that everyone asks for – and sometimes what one customer wants is exactly what another customer
doesn’t want – but the more you can help us understand why you want something changed, the better we can try to meet those needs.
Thanks for listening, and we look forward to hearing your responses.

  • I can't install Windows 10 Technical Preview in Dell Inspiron M5030

    Hello everyone.
I have a big problem when installing the Windows 10 Technical Preview, everything goes well until the moment that says "getting devices ready XX%" after this the screen turns black, which I had already happened when installing Windows 8.1 . I have
Windows 8 Pro and gave me problems to install, but with these two versions of Windows I always throws this error. Right now what interests me is to have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview to be developing some applications we have had in mind
a few colleagues and I, but I have not managed to install it. I have to turn the laptop to use it again, and when you start telling me "restoring your previous version of windows" And once again normally on, send me a message saying "We Could
not install Windows 10 Technical Preview" and send me the error code 0xC1900101 - 0x30018.
    HELP!
I urgently need to have installed this version of windows.

    Hi Domeck98,
This kind of issue is mostly caused by the driver compatibility issue during upgrade.
And it’s hard to find the culprit from installation log. The error code is sent by the setupact.log.
For a better method to test the 9879 build, it is recommended to perform a clean install in your case:
Here is the link to download the 9879 build ISO.

We can burn it to DVD media or use it create bootable USB drive.

    This is my result:
From your error code, it seems this is relate to your windows update, please use following command to fix corrupted files:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
In the meantime, you can delete temporary update files in the SoftwareDistribution folder:
    Stop Windows Update service.
    Open File Explorer.
Double-click the local hard disk where Windows is installed, typically drive C.
Double-click the Windows folder, and then double-click the
    SoftwareDistribution folder.
Double-click the DataStore folder to open it, and then delete all files and folders in the folder.
Note If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Hi Dhana1989,
If you download the installation media from that link above, the activation key should be this one:
    NKJFK-GPHP7-G8C3J-P6JXR-HQRJR
Normally, Windows 10 Technical Preview is activated automatically during installation. If you get a prompt for activation, I suggest you follow this steps:
    1. Open Administrative command prompt (Windows key+x > A)
    2. Type: SLUI 3
This would bring the following prompt for you:

  • Is iTunes 11 compatible with Windows 10 Technical Preview?

    Hello.
I just installed Windows 10 Technical Preview and iTunes 11 on my PB, but now iTunes does not start up.
    Can anybody explain me why?
    kind regards,
    jolimans

iTunes is not officially supported on Windows 10, and will not be until the latter is released in the fall.  While Apple, like all other vendors of Windows software, will be working to ensure compatibility at that time, it is not possible to say whether any given version of iTunes will install, run, or operate correctly against a Tech Preview that may be unfinished and/or unstable.
That said, it is possible that more recent versions of iTunes may include some reworked code that's intended to be a component of Win 10 compatibility.  This may be stretching assumptions a little, but it may not be a coincidence that the last two releases of iTunes (12.1 and 12.1.1) have included full 64-bit applications and not just the "32-bit application with 64-bit installer" architecture of previous releases.  Have you tried the latest (12.1.1.4) release to see if that works better than 11?

  • [Forum FAQ]Microsoft account sync settings in Windows 10 Technical Preview

    Summary
Since Windows 8, Microsoft has introduced Microsoft Accounts. When you sign in to your PC or device with a Microsoft account, you
can check email anytime, get Apps from the Windows Store,  and keep all your favorite stuff—devices, photos, friends, games, settings, music, and so on—up to date and in sync.
    From the release of
Windows 10 Technical Preview, many users have upgraded to this new OS. You may would like to keep the personalization settings, such as Desktop, Themes, Start screen, Tiles and so on. It is smart to achieve this with the help of Microsoft accounts.
    Solution
This article describes how to implement synchronization settings with the help of Microsoft accounts by an example.
Note: The previous OS has connected to a Microsoft account and has been configured related sync settings.
Example: In Windows 8.1, the layout of Start screen is shown as below, two extra icons have been pinned to the Start screen: Facebook which is needed to be installed manually and
Control Panel which is a built-in item by design.
Note: Start menu is been used by default in Windows 10 Technical Preview, if you want to switch to Start screen, please right click
Taskbar\Properties\Start Menu, which is as shown below, uncheck the option
Use the Start menu instead of the Start screen, then sign out and sign back.
    Steps
    Press Windows Logo +C, click
Settings\Change PC Settings\OneDrive\Sync settings, and then turn on
Sync your settings on this PC.
Configure corresponding settings according to your demand. The settings of this example are shown as below:
Connect the same Microsoft account in Windows 10 Technical Preview, configure the same sync settings, wait for several minutes, or restart Task Manager, sign out and sign back, restart. The setting configured in the previous system
would be synchronized to the new OS, which is shown as below:
From the picture above, we can find that the layout of Start screen is almost the same with the one of previous OS, Facebook and Control Panel are also synchronized to the Start screen in Windows
10 Technical Preview. However, since Facebook is not a built-in app, you need to click the icon to install it before using it. Here we can see that the synchronized apps have not been installed.
In this example, Background and Lock screen have also been synchronized, and the Taskbar has also been placed to the left edge just like the configurations in the previous system which is shown as below:

Thank for the write up.  I have "streamlined" the process to make it forward compatible with the new Tech Previews.
    I am using the following.
    - MDT 2013
    - Windows 8.1 ADK
    - Additional edits to LTIApply.wsf as detailed in original
article with some modifications listed below.
    - Custom DISM script (link)
    1) Edit LTIApply.wsf and change the following code.
    Old Code
    If Left(oEnvironment.Item("OSCurrentVersion"), 1) >= "6" then
    New Code
    If ((Left(oEnvironment.Item("OSCurrentVersion"), 1) >= "6") or (Left(oEnvironment.Item("OSCurrentVersion"), 2) = "10")) then
Then remove the following code and replace with the new code.
    Old Code
    Elseif Left(sOSBuild, 1) < "6" then
    iRetVal = ApplyImage( "nt52" )
    New Code
    Elseif Left(sOSBuild, 1) < "6" and Left(sOSBuild, 1) > "2" then
    iRetVal = ApplyImage( "nt52" )
When it comes to DISM, no need to change the current structure.  Use the script at the following location and it will pull the DISM files from the Windows 10 WIM file automatically for you and apply them to the installation session.  Does
not modify your MDT 2013 ADK in any way.
A very smart guy figured this out, many kudos to Frank Lesniak for coming up with this little trick.

After making only these changes, I am now able to deploy Windows 10 Technical Preview builds 9879 - 10061.
    Enjoy!  :)

    just says "Windows Technical Preview".
    Thanks
    Stefan
    Something like this but correct the path;
    dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:E:\Recovery\install.wim
If it doesn't say enterprise, its not.
Seems there are three installs that's ive seen.
    Windows Technical Preview
    Windows Technical Preview for Consumer
    Windows Technical Preview for Enterprise
Thanks Mike, i no found out that i did not had the Enterprise Edition. Downloaded it now and even in Computer Information it says Enterprise now. Thank you.

  • Windows 10 Technical Preview Enterprise Build 9879 Product Key

    Hi
Does the Windows 10 Technical Preview Enterprise 9879 uses the same product key as build 9841???

I would have been totally satisfied if the final release was B9860.
I have installed the TP on all my pc's. I have 3 desktops and a laptop that I did clean installs for on spare hard drives.
I also cloned the Windows 8.1 systems from each of them - and upgraded to Win 10 TP to see how it would handle the variety of applications I have on each.
One minor issue was that a diagnostic application I prefer to use - lost some of it's capability to display certain components like CPU specs.
The audio had been working exceptionally well up to B9860. Then I had one major issue on one of the desktops - when the audio stopped working right. Microphone audio was passed to the speaker output correctly - but NO audio
was passed from Windows Media Player or Winamp. But it did pass audio thru to the speakers from a music editing application which I use.
Even more strange was that when I moved that hard drive to another desktop which has similar motherboard - the audio works perfectly. Both have VIA audio devices.
I also installed Win10 TP Enterprise on a hard drive and had the same results as above when booted up on those two desktop pc's. Whatever evidence I could extract has been passed back to Microsoft.
On checking I find the Win10 TP and Enterprise use the same key.
Otherwise - as you say - Windows 10 is GREAT. So I can't wait for the final release.
btw: I have done about a dozen different installs and never had to enter the install key when installing any of the Win10 systems. I have the general Win10 TP B9841 ISO burned to a DVD and each install had to be upgraded to the next build available.
The Enterprise comes as B9879 and I burned that ISO to a USB3 Flash Drive. Much better performance - and re-usable. So I will not be using DVD's in future.
