Windows 2000 on Sat S1800-514: possible?

Hello everybody
I'm wondering if downgrading from XP to 2000 on the old good Sat S1800-514 be possible or not. I tried once but a nasty problem was the display driver: could not find a Win 2000 working one for the Trident board. I see the label on the machine saying "Designed for Win XP" - does it mean I cannot downgrade? Anybody know how to solve this bit? By the way: I guess that Win 2000 would make the laptop run faster... XP seems quite heavy to be borne by a Celeron 995Mhz and 112 MB RAM....
Thanks in advance for help!

On Toshiba support page you can find W2000 drivers for this notebook model. I presume there should not be problems at all.
Check the support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads. There you can find all you need.

  • Tracking Windows 2000 OS events--Is it possible?

    Hello all,
I have stored files in my computer which are generated using my application. These files own my application specific file extension. I have registered the file association to windows registry and when each time the file is opened in OS environment (using double click or rignt click on the icon--> open etc.,).. i need to access the file's absolute path in order to open it using my application. How to track those system events (Double clicks, right click--> open etc.,)..can anyone help me out??..
    Thank you in advance!!

    Maybe I don't understand what you're asking.
Of course you should buy a bigger than 16GB msata ssd, i suggested that the 128GB is the sweet spot, costing around $100-120. This is fast enough and spacious enough for the operating system and programs and you get to keep your 320GB HDD (installed of course as it is now, inside your laptop) as storage space for photos, music, videos.
You can certainly get a bigger msata ssd (around $250 for 256GB), but i don't see the point unless you really want to burn money. The point in using an ssd is to have the fast access, both read and write, to the operating system and programs. You do not need to load the SSD with all your files since you can keep your old big HDD for these, you don't gain practically anything by having photos and videos in an ssd...
Now, if the only option would be to replace the hard disk with a normal (not msata) SSD, then you certainly would need either to buy a very large SSD (spending $400-500) or to keep an external usb disk for your files. The only advantage would be that you would have full SATA III speeds instead of the SATA II speeds that an msata would give you. Having tried both options, the perceivable difference in speed between the two (SATA II vs SATA III) is negligible. There is a difference but you would know only by running benchmarks...
So, to conclude, get a 128GB msata ssd (or bigger if you insist and have money to spend) and keep your 320GB HDD for the storage of your files. The laptop will be really and significantly much faster and you will have a big smile on your face with the difference in speed from your old HDD. This is the best of the options IMO.

  • Is it possible to charge Ipod5G in Windows 2000 after ejecting from Itunes?

Is it possible to charge Ipod5G in Windows 2000 after ejecting from Itunes? but keeping it connected? I'm using a fairly powerful and new computer at work...loaded with Win2K (2000), and for some reason it doesnt want to charge once I've ejected it from Itunes.
My home computer with Windows XP works fine with this, I can eject, but keep it connected so it charges while i watch videos, or listen to music.
    Can anyone help?
also...the computer at work does have USB 2, and can charge properly...but only if the ipods screen says "DO NOT DISCONNECT"
    Thanks folks!

I have the same problem and the cause is with Windows 2000. My pc has USB 2.0 and no hardware problems either with the computer, ipod or cables. Basically Windows seems to be shutting down the power for the USB port as soon as Itunes completes its update every time. So the ipod gets a charge for a minute or two and that's it.
I have just been using another pc for the charge which is annoying - haven't found a solution yet although fiddling with the settings so that itunes is only started up manually may be a good workaround.
Other people have had the same problem in Win 2k with other models -

I'm using a single WD 80GB SATA Drive (wd800jd) on the pm8m2-v mainboard's via sata controller.  I've gone through the hit F6 and selected the windows 2000 ata/atapi driver and the raid driver (both separately) and the OS install always says it finds no hard drive.  Then I tired both ata/atapi and raid driver for windows xp (even though i'm attempting a windows 2000 install) and it actually finds the drive, but after formatting and copying files, i get an inaccessible boot device failure when it reboots to begin setup.  i've downloaded most recent mobo drivers and bios (the bios on the web is actually older than the one on the board? - web has v1.1 and the board has v2.0)   ideas???

got it workin with the most recent xp driver from the site... strange

    Hi,
I'm sorry, but as far as I know, it's not possible to download an operating system. If you lost your recovery CD with the whole factory image, you have to buy a new one from Toshiba or only an operating system and install the system by your own.

  • Exception_access_violation error on Windows 2000 Professional

    Hello,
I am developing a stand-alone Java application that runs without any problem on Windows 98, XP, and most 2000 and NT machines. On some Windows 2000 Professional machines, however, attempting to run the program generates the following error. Is there something about the configuration of these machines that needs to be adjusted to make the program work? The JRE (1.4) and program installation are done in exactly the same way in each case. The only variation seems to be in the version of the operating system.
Any help much appreciated. Best reply gets 4 DD's!
    Thanks much,

Yes, the user in question is logging on with full Administrator access. He suspects some kind of conflict with another application on the machine, but given that the two occurrences I've seen of this error have been on NT and 2K Pro machines, I'm inclined to think it's operating system related. Any more hunches?

  • Oracle 8i Installation problem on Windows 2000

I had purchased a Oracle8i (MS/Windows NT CD (E-Commerce), part Number A94674-01 in the month of Jun 2000.
When I tried to install Oracle 8i personal edition of Windows 2000 ver.
The installation got completed smoothly. But after that I was not able to start my database and even Windows 2000 crashed after that. After every crash I reinstalled windows 2000 and oracle 8i but the result was same. My whole purpose of purchasing Oracle 8i on windows 2000 is getting defeated.
I would request you send me solution what to do ? Or replace my Oracle S/W. Its useless for me right now.
    My M/C configuration is
Dell P-III (256 MB, 300 Mhz) with sound card.
20 GB Hard Disk of 7200 rpm.
The primary O/S is Windows 98.
The Hard disk is partitioned into no. Of logical drives.
    They are like 2GB of each (C, D, E, F) and G 10 GB
C part ion has got Windows. And G has got windows 2000. There is enough space in all part ions.
I would appreciate if you can solve my problem as soon as possible.

  • Problem with strange border-colors on windows 2000

On windows 2000, I have the problem, that my JButtons, JComboboxes and so on are rainbow-colord (if I do not set a special Border to theser Components). What can I do (if possible, I would not set explicit borders to all Components; and for Popups-Dialogues, it is not possible to set spcial borders, is it?)
    Thank you for any help!

I'm seeing the exact same behavior on my 8.1 Laptop.  I tried deleting the Skype tmp folder as suggested elsewhere, I also uninstalled and reinstalled Skype for Desktop and still can't hang up a call  and often can't answer a call either.  Makes Skype completely useless at this point.

  • Re: IMPORTANT - How to install Windows 2000 on a Satellite L300-16M (PSLB0E) ?

    Hello,
I'm an independent developper and absolutely need to install several operating systems on my *Satellite L300-16M (PSLB0E)* : it's very important for me because I've to check working of piece of software under every environment for real (not using solutions like VMware, for example).
Well, so, at this time, I've done an Acronis TrueImage backup of original full HDD, then deleted original WinRE and Data partitions, reduced and moved at beginning of disk the Vista partition... and installed System Commander 8 to prepare my future multi-boot. At this time, all sounds right : Vista works perfectly !
Also, note I've configured SATA in Setup BIOS to be in "Compatibility" mode ; just because I don't need AHCI in my type of use !
Second stage : now, *I have to install Windows 2000 Pro (SP4) FR*. Of course, I'm aware that the blocking point is the SATA/AHCI driver, wich is absent in the Win 2K CD... So, I've just made a new CD integrating these drivers using nLite ; at this time, I've tried using driver from Toshiba's XP Drivers page and Intel site about Intel 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controlleur (ICH8M).
But it doesn't work completely : the Win 2K install starts... All drivers are well loaded (including the AHCI ones) and just after this loading step, I get a black screen with just a blink cursor at top left of screen... indefinitively :-(
I've also tried to switch SATA to "AHCI" mode in BIOS and it's the same.
So, what to do next ?
Do I've used the wrong AHCI drivers ? Do I need to incorporate the maximum of Toshiba Drivers (about chipset, display, sound) in the Windows 2000 install CD using nLite ? I mean until the CD capacity is not reached.
Is there a way or tutorial to install Windows 2000 somewhere ? For XP, I think it will more easy because SP3 seems to support AHCI, but, just now, my problem is to install Windows 2000 : even if Microsoft wants to leave-it, there are a lot of professionals who still use-it... And my job, as developer, is to do my software works on this OS too ! *I really need to find a way to install it on this computer !!!*
Awaiting your lighted replies and all tips or idea which could help me to achieve the task.
In one word : HELP ! oops !

Thanks xaver, but I've already tried stormng-20070827133046.zip and it remains the same :(
About all driver ? Oh, in fact, I'll try to see if the XP ones work and if not I'll have a not-fully working Win 2K, but it will be enough for me to test my programs... I hope, at least, I'll be able to do display driver work !
Well, seeing I don't succeed using Intel/Toshiba drivers and nLite, I'm trying at this time to go through another way, installing Win2K in a VMware, then forcing install of the Toshiba AHCI driver, then doing a TrueImage of this and restauring in the Toshiba ! I'll see...
However, if someone has an idea, don't hesitate.
EDIT : I'm now at the step to try to force the Store Manager driver from Toshiba (the one given for this model under XP), launching iata_cd.exe and after some second I see a message saying that this OS (Windows 2000) is not supported by this driver... So, from now, I clearly know why this driver failed when I gone through the nLite-customized Win2K CD install directly on the Satellite :-(
So, this change the game : does it exist a Windows 2000 compatible driver for the Satellite L300-16M's AHCI Controller ??? This is the question !
If you have the answer, very thanks to tell me, of course...

  • Error while Installing Oracle 8i on windows 2000 box

When trying to install the Oracle 8i software, I get the following error from the event log:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( PctSpk ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: PctSpk error: 1063, StartServiceCtrlDispatcher failed..
If anyone have suggestions to solving my problems, please advise.
Note: I've started all possible services that I could think of.

Definitely 8i won't work with windows vista. 10gR2 (10.2.0.1.0) was not certified to run against vista, Oracle had to release an specific 10.2.0.3.0 for Windows Vista. Previous releases are Not supported at all and there are no plans to support them.
If you are planning to use 8i on your Vista OS, it won't be possible, but you can create a Virtual Machine with a supported guest OS for 8i, Windows 2000 is certified for 8i, Windows XP is not supported for 8i, but I have been working with it for years without any issue (this is not a suggestion for production environments).

  • 9iFS R2 on Windows 2000 repeated install failure - help !!

    Hi All,
here is a desperate plea for help with 9iFS R2 on Windows 2000, service pack 2, the story so far ....
    1) clean install of windows 2000 with service pack 2, network configured and working.
    2) install Oracle 9i R2 database and configure tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora as per the oracle by example documents for R2
    3) reboot machine and all service come up fine
    4) install Oracle 9i R2 Application Service with option A to just install web server and cache stuff. This is installed in its own oracle home, all seems fine, reboot the machine.
    5) all the services come up fine ( so far so good eh !! )
    6) follow the pre-installation for 9iFS R2 ( as per the solaris install notes as i can't find any windows specific ones ). This includes the creation of a tnsnames.ora file in 9iashome\9ifs\network\admin, checking of the configuration required for 9iFS, all seems fine. Reboot the machine and all services come up fine.
    7) start the 9iFS install, this is installed into the 9ias home as per the instruction. Install proceeds, enter config information, various connection tests are performed ok, and then we get to the 'configuring oracle 9iFS' screen which has a whole load of tasks which the installer then works its way through. When it gets to the 'executing setup scripts' option ( second from bottom ) it immediately throws a java exception, about 'file access denied', 'unable to create ifs directory' with no error code or anything else. The configuration screen then exits, and says installation complete successfully ! As you can imagine it hasnt, and nothing is configured. I have repeated this 4 full times now, reading the oracle install docs very carefully. Same thing every time. However, and this is the strange part. If at that point, I uninsall 9iFS using the oracle installer, and then try and reinstall 9iFS again, when it gets to the section of where to create the schema, and i tell it the same IFSSYS as the one created previously, it will then warn me its going to delete it and create a new one with the same name. I select 'yes' create it again and this time the install completes with no errors ! Hurray you think, ahhhh BUT....
    8) reboot the machine, start up the browser to point at the local machine port 1810, and log in successfully. Then select the node on port 15x41 ( sorry cant quite remember port number ) as per the post installation docs, and told to 'launch it'. This i do, providing the administration account user name and password which has been used to install everything so far. Explorer sits for about 60 seconds then returns to the screen with the portal node still down. I have tried starting the node and domain to no avail, both fail to start with no reason for the failure and nothing in the 9iFS\logs to explain whats failing - sigh.
    OK the questions
    1) why do i initially get this file access denied problem so failing the install - is this a known windows problem ?
    2) When i do get the install to complete by reinstall 9iFS and rebuilding the schema can I not then start the node or domain ?
In effect I am installing all these on a single machine with 1 Gig of memory for evaluation and prototyping as a possible Document Management System which we can build custom solutions upon. With being unable to install it at all we are at a total loss. Can some one save my sanity and remaining hair and offer some help/suggestions as to why this is not working ?
    best regards
    Tom

    Thomas,
thanks for your hints, it helped me quite well getting iFS installed on my machine! But when I try to start iFS from the administration GUI I do have excactly the same problem like you:
start up the browser to point at the local machine port 1810,
and log in successfully. Then select the node on port 15x41
as per the post installation docs, and told to 'launch it'.
This i do, providing the administration account user name and
password which has been used to install everything so far.
Explorer sits for about 60 seconds then returns to the screen

node and domain to no avail, both fail to start with no reason
for the failure and nothing in the 9iFS\logs to explain whats
failing - sigh.At first my thought was iAS might have problems with special characters in the admin's name or password (due to security guidelines we had to change the admin's name). But also with alphanumeric name and password it doesn't work.
Furthermore, also starting iFS using the BATch files doesn't work always. The services seem to start up correctly, but I'm not able to connect via share, FTP, HTTP or anything.
It got worse when I accidently called "ifsundeployear.bat": after that I no longer was able to redeploy the iFS's EAR, I only get error messages complaining inconsistency between local config files and the repository. Logfiles didn't help at all. So at the moment I'm reinstalling everything once more, sigh.
Did ANYONE get iFS started the way it's supposed to be under Windows 2000?

  • Problem Installing 817 on Windows 2000 with RAID Array

I am having a problem installing Oracle under windows 2000 which has 2 x 60 GB discs configured in RAID array. When I run the setup program the cursor goes busy for about 10 seconds and returns back to normal and nothing happens !. No errors nothing.
However when I run the Object Manager in the ods_preinstall directory it starts but in the log file I get the following error message:-
    02/14/02 09:46:18 : (892) : Error in IO Control call for disk PhysicalDrive0 (Error 21)
    02/14/02 09:46:19 : (892) : The count = 28
    02/14/02 09:46:19 : (892) : The signature is 0x443aa035
02/14/02 09:46:19 : (892) : Error: First Partition of the disk must be an extended disk
    02/14/02 09:46:19 : (892) : Found the partition: 7
Any idea whats happening....? Has anyone seen this before. Do I need to do something special in teh RAID..?
    TIA
    Martin

    Here are some possible solutions:
    1. The installation notes state that you must be logged on as Administrator to be able to install 9i. Are you logged on as the Administrator? Being logged on as user01 with Administrator priviledges isn't the same as Administrator.
    2. Is the disk full? If I remember my installation correctly, I needed 3 times the size of the files. The documentation will tell you how much space you need.
    Hope these two questions help
    Regards,
    Michael
