Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Exchange DAG event 1196 and 1579 Bad DNS Key

Hi,
I'm running an Exchange 2010 SP1 DAG on Windows 2008 R2 SP1.  We are using an INFOBLOX appliance for DNS resolution.
DNS resolution is working and SRV records are created.
On one of the two clusternodes I get warning 1579 and error 1196 every 15 minutes.  After looking around on the internet and technet, I found kb 977158 stating the problem and resolution.  However this hotfix is not applicabel on Windows
2008 R2 SP1 .
How can I resolve these annoying events?
Event 1196 failoverClustering:
Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason:
DNS bad key.
Ensure that the network adapters associated with dependent IP address resources are configured with at least one accessible DNS server.
Event 1579 Failover Clustering
Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed to update the DNS record for name 'DAG.domain.local' over adapter 'NIC1-LAN'. The error code was 'DNS bad key. (9017)'. Ensure that a DNS server is accessible from this cluster node and contact your DNS
server administrator to verify the cluster identity can update the DNS record 'DAG.domain.local'.
 Frederik

Cause:
The cluster name resource which has been added to the DNS prior to setup active passive cluster ( or any type) need to be updated by the Physical nodes on behalf of the resource record itself. When the active node owns the resources it want to update the
A record in the DNS database and DNS record which was created won’t allow any authenticated user to update the DNS record with the same owner
Solution:
Delete the existing A record for the cluster name and re-create it and make sure select the box says “Allow any authenticated user to update DNS record with the same owner name “Don’t worry about breaking anything , this has “ZERO”
impact to cluster simply delete the A record and re-create as it is suggested here.

  • Windows 2008 R2 SP1 - Exchange 2010 SP2, RU7, 3 node DAG - Possible Port Exhaustion?

    Hey TechNet
So today at about 10:00 am the exchange server dropped all connectivity (except for ping) and was not accessible by RDP and I could not connect to the service control panel etc. (from a remote machine). In addition I could not log on to the console, when
I pressed ctrl+alt+del - nothing happened. (This is running on VMware and I was not able to to use the VMware tools to restart the server either) it had to be "reset" in the console.
I found numerous errors in the event viewer as you might suspect, namely that the server could not locate any domain controllers, global catalogs etc. Of course all the mailbox databases failed over to the other dag member and no one noticed (so
    that worked well).
In checking some settings, I have determined that the servers memory page file is not set to RAM+10MB, but it was never set anyways, in addition
static RPC ports are not set. The client was doing mailbox moves today (I am going to confirm with the client again to make sure)
My question to you is this: will not setting static RPC ports cause port exhaustion? and if so can you provide a link that says as much?
    Thanks,
    Robert
    Robert

    Rhoderick,
Thanks for the response. I reviewed several different links regarding this especially some of the ones related to memory exhaustion I didn't see RADAR events in the event log. Here is a short list of some of the events that I have seen in the event viewer.
ESE, 490 (Time Occurred: 9:47 am), several instances.
Information Store (5524) db-7: An attempt to open the file "V:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\database\E0E.chk" for read / write access failed with system error 1450 (0x000005aa):
"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. ".  The open file operation will fail with
    error -1011 (0xfffffc0d).
ESE 906 (Time Occurred 10:00 am), several instances.
Information Store (5524) A significant portion of the database buffer cache has been written out to the system paging file.  This may result in severe performance degradation.
See help link for complete details of possible causes.
Resident cache has fallen by 78083 buffers (or 38%) in the last 118 seconds.
Current Total Percent Resident: 16% (124338 of 762960 buffers)
MSExchangeREPL 2170 (Time occurred, 9:51) several instances.
A slow file IO operation was encountered on file 'V:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\database7\E0E000BB30C.log' for copy 'db-7\CBEXCH1'. The observed latency was 9737.6786
ms while performing a 'MissingFileNotification'. This may indicate an overloaded system or a storage-related problem.
MSExchagneADaccess 2070, (Time Occurred, 9:56 am) several instances.
Process Microsoft.Exchange.EdgeSyncSvc.exe (PID=2864).  Exchange Active Directory Provider lost contact with domain controller dc.contoso.local.  Error was 0x51 (ServerDown) (Active
directory response: The LDAP server is unavailable.).  Exchange Active Directory Provider will attempt to reconnect with this domain controller when it is reachable.
MSExchangeADaccess 2122, (Time Occurred 9:57) Several Instances.
Process MSEXCHANGEADTOPOLOGYSERVICE.EXE (PID=164). Error 0x8007267c occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain
    contoso.local
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._dc.contoso.local
For information about correcting this problem, Type in the command line:
    hh tcpip.chm::/sag_DNS_tro_dcLocator_messageA.htm
While I do understand that the to really nail this down we would need to setup a data capture set using as you suggested perfmon, and probably (prodump, netmon, etc) I was trying to get the client an answer.
I do have 2 perfmon collectors from last week and the week before,
to be clear these captures were not taken when issues occurred; they show some memory pressure on 1 or 2 counters with some high spikes, but in most cases all the averages (with the exception of 2 counters) are completely below the thresholds.
All captures were done for 4 hours @ 15 secs.
Page Reads/Sec, has an average of 19.433 with a max of 909.51, There are about 10 spikes over 100
Pages Input/Sec, Shows an Average of 132.981, Max, 6,695 (I realize the max is bad), I see 13 Instance's of this counter spiking above 1,000.
Pages Output/Sec, Shows An average of 38.113, Max, 5,221 (I realize the max is bad here), I see about 8 instances of spikes over 1,000.
Systemcache Resident Bytes remains stable with very minor increases over the entire capture.
Pool non paged bytes, is stable across the entire capture as well (Stable, meaning straight line)
Working Set for Store.exe, stable, straight line almost no changes.
Working set for Total, Stable, Straight line almost no changes.
% Committed Bytes in use is at 60%, stable across the whole capture.
This server does not have its page file set to RAM+10MB its set to Dynamically grow. My plan (before yesterday) was to set the page file correctly, then recapture and see if there were any differences. My problem that I have experienced here is that none
of the counters seem to correlate, or if they do its not really a complete correlation that tells me what's going on.
    Thanks for your help here!!

  • Upgrade of Integation Services (Windows 2012 R2) on Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG fails

    Here is the scenario:
    Legacy Host: Windows 2008 R2
Guest VM: Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG cluster.
After importing the VM (2008 R2 and Exchange 2013 DAG) into a 2012 R2 host (Cluster).  (copy VM files to new 2012 R2host) Everything works fine.
Then upgrading "Installation Services" (for Windows 2012 R2 host) on the imported VM runs fine with no errors to the "Restart" prompt. VM than shows: "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn
of your computer." Hangs there for about 20 minutes until is says "shutting down". Hangs there for 20 minutes until power off. Restart to normal start; "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turnoff your computer." proceeds slowly
to "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." hangs there again indefinite. Sometime hangs at shutdown cycle and "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." indefinitely.
I moved 20 other machines from a 2008 R2 host to new Windows 2012 R2 hosts all of these machines install the 2012 R2 Integration services just fine on the 2008 R2 VM. Just the 2008 R2 VMs clustered (DAG) and Exchange 2013 SP1 do not take the Integration
    Services upgrade.
Any advise from Microsoft? I know I could decommission the DAG and Exchange machines and install Integration services on the native box before Exchange and DAG and that would sure work, but I'd rather avoid that amount of work for a simple integration layer
    upgrade.
    Thanks

  • Applying Windows 2008 R2 SP1 on Exchange 2010 SP2 servers

    Hi All,
Our current setup is Primary Site and DR site with a DAG.
Primary site is having 2 Mailbox servers, 2 hubcas servers with an NLB and one CAS server for OWA.
DR Site is having 1 mailbox server, one hubcas server and one CAS server.  All these exchange servers are SP2 with update roll up5.
But the OS is Windows 2008 R2, need to apply Windows 2008 R2 SP1 on these servers, and what are things to be considered.
Does this affect CAS servers IIS?
    Thanks,
    Kanishka.

Agreed. One thing to mention - Win 2008 R2 needed SP1 a while back, no security updates have been released for a while.
Exchange 2010 SP2 goes out of support next month. please plan to update to SP3 for Exchange 2010.

    Hi,

I have tried the "fsutil resource setautoreset true" fix without success.
Any ideas or direction would be much appreciated. Restoring this server will be extremely difficult.
    Thanks!

    We can close this question.
From an elevated prompt, I ran 'fsutil resource setautoreset true' and attempted to remove the files with .blf and regtrans-ms file extensions from C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR. but these files were locked by system processes. (They are also
tagged with the hidden file attrib so you may not see them at first)
So, I booted the system with a Windows 2008 R2 Install Disk, selected repair OS and selected the command prompt. I then performed a chkdsk /f c: and selected "Y" to unmount the drive. It made some repairs.
With the system booted from the install disk, and chkdsk executed, the locks were freed and I was able to delete the files from C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR.
Once the system rebooted, the services came back fine and everything was back to normal.

  • Upgrade Windows 2008 R2 sp1 on an Exchange 2010 SP3 server

I have looked high and low for an answer to this question:
    1. I have Windows 2008 R2 running Exchange 2010 SP3
    2. Can I upgrade Windows 2008 R2 to SP1 with Exchange 2010 SP3 onboard?
    3. Are there pre-requisites for doing this?
    4. If so, where can I get the documentation?
I have spent hours looking through Google and Technet.  Lots of information about compatibility of 2008 R2 and Exchange SP1 and SP2.
Your wisdom and experience would be appreciated.  Thank you!!
    Charlie

    Hi,
    "Can I upgrade Windows 2008 R2 to SP1 with Exchange 2010 SP3 onboard?"
    Yes, you can.
"Are there pre-requisites for doing this?"
There is no pre-requisites, however, as what Idan Vexler mentioned above, downtime is required.
"If so, where can I get the documentation?"

  • Static DNS record deleted automatically- Windows 2008 R2 SP1

    Hi,
I have scoured the Interweb and tried all suggestions to no avail for this one. Here's the scenario:
My client has a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 (Windows 2003 domain/forest functional level) server which is a DC and DNS server. The problem is that a DNS record for an Exchange 2010 server is getting deleted every 10 or 40 minutes. This started occurring for no obvious
reason a few weeks ago. The impact is that users cannot connect to Exchange (caching does not seem to help with this, which is odd). I disabled scavenging, which did not resolve the issue. I enabled auditing and found a 4662 event revealing that the domain
administrator account was deleting the server A record (and pointer record). Why this is happening is what I am trying to investigate next: possible bug? The zone is configured as non secure- maybe making it securing it would help? But this does not explain
why the record is being deleted. There is no NIC teaming implemented, which I understand can cause issues.
As an interim measure I created a script employing dnscmd that recreates the record every 15 minutes, which works for the most part, but not always, which is why I added a deny permission on the record for the domain Administrators group, seems so far to
have prevented the record from being deleted.
Any advise on the cause of this and how to investigate why the record is being deleted will be much appreciated!

Hi- thanks for that. However I have seen those links and already followed them: I turned off scavenging (default 7 day configuration) and the record still gets deleted (scavenging date is not due till a later data in any case). Also the record is static
so it would not get scavenged? The option to delete the record if stale is unchecked.
I already enabled auditing and identified event 4662, which identified that the domain administrator account that is deleting the record:

Reviewing event details, as suggested, does not offer any solution.
I have tried the suggested solutions in other similar threads of increasing the timeout value with the registry entry.
    This does not work.
I have not tried reregistering the VSS writers manually, as the only links I have found are for server 2003/2008 (not R2) and explicitly state that they won’t work on higher versions of the OS, since they now utilize manifests and the manual procedure could
cause problems for those servers. Haven't found similar procedures for 2008 R2.
I have been able to narrow this down a bit.
    A Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server with Hyper-V installed – backup to a network share is successful;
Install the DPM 2012 agent – same backup fails with the 2155348001 error.
We use DPM 2012 to backup VMs, but DPM cannot perform a bare metal backup/restore of server and the 2012 version no longer has the DPMSRT feature.
I prefer to run Bare Metal Backup to a file server share.
    Stuck on this one.

    Hi,
The issue is related to DPM, I would suggest you ask for help from DPM forums:

  • Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Windows update not applicable

HELP!!! We have 3 Windows 2008 R2 servers that were updated with SP1 back in March. Last month we noticed on our Retina audit that the three servers were missing several Windows critical patches that were released after SP1 was applied. WSUS did not report
any missing patches for those three servers. When we tried to manually apply those missing patches we get the error message "This update is not applicable to your computer". After some troubleshooting we found that KB976932 (Service Pact 1) is not listed in
installed updates. However, system property shows Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise Edition. We are certain that SP1 did NOT come pre-installed. Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer detected no missing patches. Microsoft System Readiness Tool CBA logs show no
errors. Ran SFC /SCANNOW and found no error also. Force install of the patches with command switch /wuforce, did not work we still get the same message patch not applicable. We compared our servers that are fully patched running Windows 2008 R2 SP1 against
the three unpatched servers and found several dll and sys file's version to be different. Those dll and sys files are also the files that would have been updated by the critical patches. The only thing different between the fully patched Windows 2008 R2 SP1
servers and the unpatch are the unpatch have no public internet access. We confirmed patches that were required prior to SP1 push are installed: KB2454826 KB2534366 KB2533552 KB976902 Confirmed: Partition with Windows 2008 R2 SP1 installed is set to "ACTIVE"
Windows Event Collector service is started Windows Modules Installer is started Uninstalling SP1 is not possible because the KB976932 is not listed and verified "not hidden" in installed updates list. Rebuilding the three servers are the very last option,
since they are critical. Other than the missing patches.... the servers are running great, we have no reported issues with the three servers. Attempt to reinstall SP1 failed after reboot, error 0X800F0826. If anyone has experience this problem and know of
    a solution please help.

    Hi,
I would like to confirm that what updates are not applicable for your three Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 servers?
Based on the current situation, please run the System Update Readiness Tool as Meinolf Weber mentioned and check the CheckSUR.persist.log for the corrupted
files. After that, please refer to the following Microsoft TechNet article for how to repair them.
Advanced guidelines for diagnosing and fixing servicing corruption

  • LSASS.exe utilizing 3 GB of RAM on Windows 2008 R2 SP1 - MS Dynamics AX 2012 application server (it's not a DC)

    Hi guys,
Does anyone know why would lsass.exe be using 3 GB of RAM on an application server with 8 GB of RAM in total running on Windows 2008 R2 SP1? Is this something I should log with Microsoft support?
    Thanks
    Zoran

Hi we experienced the same issue. but im not able to reproduce it on the second server.
We got two member servers both in the same configuration Windows 2008R2 SP1 STD hosting Axapta AOS.  the first server is experiencing the Lssas memory leak (we got a little bit more memory then you but it consumes 5,6GB form 6GB
total RAM) the second one not. both servers are VM hosted on hyper-v 2012 cluster. the only difference betwean them is instaled Avast Antivirus, but we have a testing environment (single VM server with identical deployment with Avast also installed) and
it does not seems that the Avast is the cause.
can anybody please point us how to troubleshoot lsass memory leaks on member servers not DCs, becouse the event logs does not show anything interesting about the couse, but are full of errors about what i see as consequences of low memory condition.
    Thanks in advance Martin Stejskal

  • Installing DSEE 7 on Windows 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit does nothing

    Hi All,
Has anyone been able to install DSEE 7 on Windows 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit? Is it supported?
I followed the instructions and when run the command (as the Administrator) below nothing happen, it simply return an empty command prompt. Ms VC 2008 Redistributables (the one that come with the archive) is installed.
    dsccsetup.exe war-file-create
    dsccsetp.exe ads-create
When run the same command using the same archive on Windows 7 64-bit it does prompt for further input or report error.
Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

Windows 2008 R2 is not listed as a supported OS in the release notes.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19424-01/820-4805/820-4805.pdf
    It lists:
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition for x86 and x64 Service Pack 1
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition for x86 and x64 Service Pack 1
If you are able to go to the next version, it is listed as supported in the release notes for ODSEE 11g:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/downloads/odsee-11gr1certmatrix-161592.xls
I have not tried 11g on 2008 R2 myself, but if it is in the certification matrix, it should work.
    Hope that helps,
    Eric

  • Installing Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5 and PhotoShop 5.5 on windows 2008 R2 SP1 using Terminal services

    Hi All,
Is it possible to install Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5 and PhotoShop 5.5 on windows 2008 R2 SP1 using Terminal services. We are planning to use xenapp to publish these application.
Please let me know if this is a supported environment.
    Regards
    Radhika

As far as I know you will NOT be able to access OpenGL functionality through Terminal Services. as the OpenGL implementation provided in that environment is software, version 1.1 - not GPU-accelerated.
I seem to recall there was a thread about a year ago here where someone was trying to do what you are asking.  I vaguely remember they were able to make it work, but I'm not sure.  You might try doing a search of this forum.

  • Hyper-v for windows 2008 r2 sp1

i have windows 2008 r2 sp1 foundation. i thought if i download and install the hyperv from the microsoft download site, it might make my server on par with the features of the windows 2008 r2 standard version, but i might be wrong, because it apparently
does not let me upgrade during setup but force me to do clean install. which implies that i might be overwriting my whole server with just a hyper v functionality and nothing else, am i correct? i dont want that. i want the whole server functionality like
iis sharepoint etc. if i dont have hyper v, i can live with having vmware player.

    Hi Lenny,
Please ensure that the downloaded server is Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard not core or other edition .
Also please refer to following article :

  • Windows 2008 R2 SP1 BSOD

    Hi All,
Experience BSOD's throughout the business day on an Windows 2008 R2 SP1 x64 terminal server (hosted on an hyper-v 2008 host) but not outside of business hours (thinking its an application / driver issue). Other virtual machines on this host are not experiencing
the same issue and the host is not impacted (non-hardware failure).
I've been trying to find out how to diagnose this one by revising the minidump files with WinDBG / 2008R2 symbol files but it keeps coming back to winsys32 as the fault, but can't figure out how to resolve this one.
If anyone could help with this that would be great.
