Windows 2008 STD DC Virtualization

Greetings Fellow Techies,
I have Virtualized a Windows 2008 DC Server using VMware vCenter tool.  Once I open the
Server using VM Player on Ubuntu the Server boots up flawlessly but Active Directory do not
work.  There is no point virtualizing the DC if the Active Directory is not working.  The service
show it is working. Also I have found that Ethernet Driver & Base System Driver is not been
installed as well.  When I Install Windows 2008 STD Server as Clean Install on the same
configuration everything is working fine.... How do I get all thiese corrected? Do I have to re-
Virtualize the Server with may be Active Directory Service stopped etc etc... your suggestions are
appreciated very much

Hi Monketrip28,
Sorry for the delay.
"The service show it is working. Also I have found thatEthernet Driver & Base System Driver is not been installed
as well. "
According to your description , I would suggest you to install another virtual NIC for this problematic VM .
If you did not uninstall the ethernet driver , Maybe you can get further assistance from VMware forum :

I have an app page (tomcat https) that i was able to open from a windows 7 professional remotely but could not open from a windows 2008 std server.  Is there a security settings I need to disable from windows 2008 std server?  The firewall is disabled.
Both Win 7 & 2008 is on the same network.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I need the error information from the Internet Explorer, if the error code is 404 that should be the webpage is not correctly developed, error code 500 means the tomcat server is not available, you should check the tomcat server, or another situation is
the port number is in use by another application, normally the default port number is 8080, you can  try another port number in the comcat configuration file  to see the result.

  • Migration of windows 2008 std 32bit DC to windows 2012 std

i have 32bit DC in my local environment having schema ver 44.. now i hav another server and want to migrate to windows 2012 std edition.. can some one guide me how to achieve this task?

    Hi Babarmunir,
In-place upgrades from 32-bit to 64-bit architectures are not supported. All editions of Windows Server 2012 are 64-bit only.
Domain controllers that run 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2012. You cannot upgrade domain controllers that run Windows Server 2003 or 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2008. To replace
them, install domain controllers that run a later version of Windows Server in the domain, and then remove the domain controllers that Windows Server 2003.
Hence you need to have a fresh x64 machine which you can join to domain and install ADDS Role then promote as additional domain controller.
Provided the Forest Functional Level is Windows Server 2003 at minimum.
Upgrading previous retail versions of Windows Server to Windows Server 2012:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/library/jj574204.aspx
Upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012
Use the below guide to setup the ADC:
Step-By-Step: Adding a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller
System requirements for Windows Server 2012 are unchanged from Windows Server 2008 R2. For more information, seeWindows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 System Requirements (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/system-requirements.aspx).
The Schema and Domain preparation:  One could run
Adprep prior to ADDS Role installation, Regardless, if Adprep is not detected, it will automatically be completed on your behalf.

  • Slow printing on windows 2008 std, R2 and windows 2012

    Hi All,
I have a print server which is configured on windows 2008 R2. We are experiencing slow printing when printing directly from the server or from a client through the server. Small sized files prints fast, anything which has image takes a long time. All the
printers in our organization are Xerox Colorqube 9303. When installed the driver directly on to windows 7 32 bit PC, it prints without any delay. Also, when prints from the server a 2 MB file becomes 15 MB or more while sending. We have tried PCL6 and PS drivers.
To replicate it, i have installed a windows 2012 server ended up with the same result. Installed windows 2008 standard 32 bit with SP2 and the result remains same. Also tried it on windows 8, 64 bit without any luck. So effectively, it works fine only when
directly installed on a windows 7 PC. I have disabled all three: disabling TCP Chimney Offload, RSS, Receive Window Auto-Tuning .
After shooting the print, if you observe the printer properties, it sends data at a very low rate which results a 10 MB documents prints take around 10 minutes. At the same time, file copying from the server to and fro is working normally. All these servers
are directly connected to the cisco 6509 core switch. All the above tests were performed on the same physical switch. The server and clients are on the same network (subnet).
Have anybody come across to a similar issue. Any useful suggestions would deeply appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Prince Mathew

    Hi Prince Mathew,
Based on your description, this issue seems that it’s related to this specific model printer (Xerox
colorqube 9303). Please install the latest version of the driver and the firmware from Xerox website, and then check if this issue still exists.
If it still persists, please clear Printer Spooler Files and enable the Spooler Service again.
    For details, please refer to.
    1. Click Start, run "Services.msc" (without the quotation marks).
    2. In Services list, please double click "Printer Spooler". Then click
    Stop, and then click OK.
    3. Please locate to: "%WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers", delete all files in this folder.
    4. Click Start, run "Services.msc" (without the quotation marks). In Services list, double click
"Printer Spooler". Click on Start. In the Startup Type list, make sure that "Automatic" is selected and click OK.
Then check if this issue can be solved.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows 2008 Server Std on T500

  • RDP Port not Listen in Windows Server 2008 Std With Sp2

    Hi all
I have Windows 2008 Server Std with SP2 Domain Member Server..  From Last week On-wards , am not able to take remote desktop control .. But i can able to Ping my Server from network .. I check remote settings on that server.. It
is enabled.. and also remote desktop service(Terminal service) was started successfully..  I checked my network firewall for port(3389) blocking.. But there is no much block in my network firewall.. i also disabled windows firewall in my server.. But
still i couldn't able to take RDP.. I also checked my Domain GPO and Local GPO settings for RDP Block.. But there is no such settings enabled.  I did following Troubleshooting Steps, but still the problem persist
    1. Telnet serverip 3389
Result : Could not open connection to the host, on port 3389:
    2. netstat -n -a -o | find "3389" (i run this command in my RDP Problem server)
Result : nothing displayed (3389 port not listed )
    3. i again & again restarted Terminal service and the server, but still problem exists
4.i changed the RDP port no and restarted the service as well as the server , but still problem exist
    5. I checked all RDP related Registry settings , everything is perfect
Please help me to solve this issue
I need your valuable reply urgently
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Mohamed,
You mention, that you the server is not listening to port 3389 when you run netstat. This is the reason why telnet and RDP connectivity fails in a first place. You also said that you changed the RDP port number. What was is before the change, and to what
    did you change it to?
Please verify if the Terminal Service is listening to 3389 (0xd3d) with following command:
    reg query "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp" /v PortNumber
    Output:
    PortNumber    REG_DWORD    0xd3d
Try to enable the Operational log for TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager events in Event Viewer:
    Open Event Viewer
Navigate to Applications and Service Logs\Microsoft\Windows\TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager
Select the Operational log and chose Enable Log
from the Action or context menu
    Restart Terminal Services service
Then consult this event log and the System and Application logs for any related errors and warning. It might be helpful to post relevant event log entries here.

  • Windows 2008 R2 Std SP1 - firewall reports packets dropped...

    Hi,
    1) I'm trying to harden the Windows firewall on standalone (non AD) Windows 2008 R2 Std SP1 server, and restrict outgoing packets to known rules. What I'm seeing is firewall log entries showing dropped packets,
and the dropped packets are always zero length. e.g. I configured a rule to allow Windows Service Host svchost.exe to reach out to MS for MS Security Essentials Updates, and it is able to check for and download updates - but what I see are dropped zero length
packets for the target IP addresses that I have allowed in the rule. I see other packets too, for other application targets, for which new rules allow the application to work
    - but again I see dropped zero length packets. Is there a feature that I can disable to allow the zero length packets out?
    2) Also, I've enabled firewall logging to a file, but I see a mis-match between what appears in the \Windows\System32\LogFiles\Firewall\*.log files versus
the event ID 5152 entries in the Security event log - I mean, sometimes I see corresponding matching entries - most of the time I don't - it's as if some of the notifications re dropped packets make it to the firewall log file, and some make to the
event log, and some make it to both.  Is this just a-typical and that's just the way it is?
    Thanks.  Dave.

    Hi Dave,
I suggest you use Netsh commands to collect diagnostic data of Windows Firewall and IPsec, the collected data will be exported into an XML file that we can examine for clues to the cause of the problem.
Please use this command below for capturing:
netsh wfp capture start file= "path and file".

  • Windows 2008 Server Co-residency BE6000/BE7000/TRCs/Specs-Based.

    Hey,
I'm trying to figure out where I can run a Windows 2008 R2 server:
BE6000: seems like no based on http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/BE6000/Coresidency/9_x/BE6K_coRes.html
BE7000: the data sheet has a "Co-residency Policy" link that provides no information on co-residency. I'm assuming yes and that there is no similar list as for the BE6000.
    TRCs: I assume yes
    Specs-based: I assume yes.
It would be nice if this was corralled into a single location.
    Thanks for any answers.

If you run 6K/7k over HYP or FND license, then yes, the above link applies to both. Not sure if you can also buy either license with TRC or spec-based TRC, if so, then they also fall under the guidelines from the link.
If you run any of the above options over VMware std, ent, or ent+ license, general co-res guidelines from virtualization wiki apply.

  • Server 2012 std not able to see Domain, DC and DNS on Win SBS 2008 std Domain

    Hi There
I have a HP ML 110 G5 SBS 2008 std server as my DC on my network. I recently added a HP Microserver running Server 2012 std (with no roles or features installed) to act solely as a file server for a 3rd party program as the program was not running efficiently
    on the main server.
The problem I am having now is that the 2012 server keeps falling off the domain and cannot contact DNS server. I have also had to re-enable remote desktop several times. It also shows the 2012 Server as being on a private firewall profile and not on the
domain firewall profile but I suspect that this is part of the same problem.
the resulting problem that this is causing is that the local machines that need to contact an SQL database on the 2012 fileserver intermittently either time out or are very slow to connect.
    So far I have tried:
Switching from Static IP to DHCP.
Re-adding the server to the domain.
Stopping and restarting DNS services on the DC.
Checking physical Network connections and routing.
Putting the 2012 server into the same Organizational Unit as the 2008 DC.
Has anyone else encountered this problem when adding a 2012 server to a 2008 domain?  I have a feeling that the solution is probably something simple that I've overlooked, but I can't think what.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Russ

  • Slow transfer file speed in Windows 7 SP1, Windows 2008 R2

We have Windows 7 SP 1 and Windows 2008 R2 in both Physical and Virtualization environment. Our network speed is 1 Gbps for Client and 10 Gbps for server infrastructure. We found this
problem in all referred environment and here is the current situation.
    Transfer files from Windows 7 to Server 2008 (Slow < 10 MB/s)
    Transfer files from Windows 2008 to Server 7 (Slow < 10 MB/s)
    Transfer files from Windows 7 to Windows 7 (Slow < 10 MB/s)
Transfer files from Windows 2003 to Server 7 (Normal up to 120 MB/s)
Transfer files from Windows 2008 to Server 7 in Safe Mode with Network (Normal up to 120 MB/s)
Copy File using 3rd software  (Normal up to 120 MB/s) but copy via windows explorer (Slow < 10 MB/s)
We try to do some configuration but it still doesn’t work below.
Command netsh int tcp set global
Update NIC driver vmxnet3 (Virtualization) and Realtek (Physical)
    Disable Firewall
    Disable and Enable network card
Apply hotfix in Kb2675785 and Kb2885974
Apply all Update Windows using Windows update feature
Finally we found strange solution to improve network speed which faster more than 10 times (60 - 150 Mbps) by using one of condition below
Change UNC form using Hostname to IP Address
    Restart DHCP service
Change some NIC hardware configuration or Check and uncheck IP V4 property in NIC configuration (No restart required)
This is an temporary solution for No.1 but in No.2 and No.3 user need administrator right ans after computer is restarted the problem still existing. Do you have any Idea to fix this problem
in long term? Thank you for you help.

    Hi,
The difference should be Windows Server 2003 uses SMB 1.0 protocol:
•SMB 1.0 (or SMB1) – The version used in Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2
•SMB 2.1 ((technically SMB2 version 2.1) – The version used in Windows 7 (or any SP) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (or any SP)
Just for a test, disable the SMB v2 to check if it could make any difference:
How to enable and disable SMBv1, SMBv2, and SMBv3 in Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012

  • Windows 2008 Server License Key not working on VirtualBox

I have a validated licensed copy of Windows 2008 Server and I need to load it on a Virtual machine (I am running Oracle VirtualBox). When I had the server running on a hardware based server it worked fine. The license key activated and it worked. Now when
I load it onto the VirtualBox solution it fails. It will take it when I run the manual command but will not show my server as activated. This is for my private use only (internal home LAN) but I would prefer to have the activation be correct since I use this
setup to help keep fresh on Windows 2008 servers while being on a Linux OS with a VM software loaded.  What can I do to have this server activate correctly under the VirtualBox?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
Base on my experience, after we convert a physical computer system to virtualize environment we need to reactive it, with MAK active method we need keep this vm to connect to
internet and with KMS method please confirm this vm can communicate with your KMS server.

  • RemoteFX on Windows 2008 R2

    Hi,
I've read many different articles about RemoteFX and the latest Resource Kit book and am finding it really hard to get a definite answer to a couple of questions. I have a physical HP DL385 G7 server currently running Windows 2008 R2. I plan to purchase
a RemoteFX compatible card. I have clients running Windows 7 Professional. My questions are:
    1. Will RemoteFX work with Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services running on a physical host or do I need to run seperate Windows 7 VMs for each user?
    2. Does the client machine need to be Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate or can I use Windows 7 Professional clients?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alastair

    Hi,
    1. Full RemoteFX capability (USB redirection, hardware vGPU, etc.) will
not work with Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) sessions.  For this you need to have Hyper-V on the physical box, Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RDVH), and Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate VMs.
    2. The client needs to be Windows 7 with SP1 or later.
Windows Server 2012 will have enhanced RemoteFX capability for RDSH sessions.  The Server 2012 Release Candidate is available for free download so that you may try it out:

  • Error 0x80070490 trying to launch VM without SCVMM on Windows 2008 Server R2

    Hello everybody,
I get a weird issue trying to launch a VM.
This is the current situation : I get a server, Windows 2008 R2. I've only install Hyper-V and Failover Cluster. I can create a VM but when I try to launch it, I get an error message into a popup (translated from french) : "The application encountered
an error during modification of 'vm_name' state". "'vm_name' could not be initialize". "Could not initialize machine remoting system. Error 'Element not found'. (0x80070490). "Could not find a usable certificate. Error: 'Element not found'. (0x80070490)."
So, I'm unable to launch my vm's.
I'm not using SCVMM yet. I want to resolve this issue before.
I read some articles and posts about SCVMM certificate issue but I'm not using SCVMM.
More fun, I read articles about this issue but on Windows 2008 Server (not R2) : problem resolved by a fix, unapplicable on my Windows 2008 R2 :)
I'm totalyblocked and ain't got no idea how I can resolve it.
If someone gets I idea ...
    Cheers,
    Nicolas

Environment: Windows 8.1 in an Active Directory Domain (2012R2) with MS Certficates Services support NAP/Health Registry, etc.
Error:  Attempts to start a Hyper-V VM on a machine generates the error message Error 0x80070490 trying to launch VM:
"'vm_name' could not be initialize". "Could not initialize machine remoting system. Error 'Element not found'. (0x80070490). "Could not find a usable certificate. Error: 'Element not found'. (0x80070490)."
    Note:
VMM can manage other Hyper-V servers in environment from same machine, just not local machine.
VMM on remote machine generates same error message when attempting to manage new VM machine
Certificates - Service (Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management) on Local Computer shows 0 certificates under vmms\Personal
Fixes Attempted and Failed except for #5!
    1) hotfix directly: Windows6.0-KB967902-x64.msu -> Failed: 0x80096002, Windows Update Standalone Installer.  The certificate for the signer of the message is invalid or not found.
    2) hotfix via pkgmgr: PkgMgr.exe has been deprecated. Please update scripts to use DISM.exe.  0x80070307
    3) Reset Certificates:
     Start > Run > MMC
     Add the Certificates Snap-In
     Select Service Account
Under the Select Account to Manager, select Hyper-V  Image Management Service
     Complete the Snap-In Wizard
Expand the Certificates under Personal Category
Notice the certificate generated has been created ‘for the future’ (assuming you’re suppose to revert the date & time to 2010, the certificate should display as invalid because it was created at 2013)
     Delete the Certificate(s)
Go to the Services Console and Restart all Hyper-V Services
     Result: No certificate auto generated
    4) Uninstall / reinstall hyper-v service and management service addons from Windows features.
    5) ‎did the following from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff935311(v=ws.10).aspx (WORKED!!! -> Note, their PS script has an error, add a dash(-) before the word recurse)
