Windows 2011 SBS Reinstallation, PDC and User CALs - Assistance Requested.

Hi, Here is my situation,
I currently have a WS2011SBS which is the PDC, running AD, DNS and DHCP, This server is having Issues which I believe a reinstall would likely fix.  We no longer use Exchange or SharePoint on this server as we have moved to MS Online Service MSO365.
I have already moved RDS/TS Licencing and Shared Folders to other servers running WS2008r2.  I also have another Server running WS2008r2 at a different site, linked by VPN (VPN is being replaced by Telstra Private Network link) I have set
this server up as a secondary AD/DNS server (this was to resolve authentication and DNS issues at the other site due to slow VPN connection)
What I would like to know or at least get some advice on is this:
1. What will be the implications regarding User CALs of reinstalling SBS2011 on my Domain?
2. Can I re sync AD/DNS from the secondary 2008r2 server or should I Promote the 2008r2 server to be the PDC and demote the SBS, and what are the implications of this on the User CALs?
3. Is there a way that I can Install 2008r2 rather than 2011SBS but still use the user CALs, as I no longer require Exchange and SharePoint, The servers only rolls will be AD/DNS, DHCP and File/Printer Sharing, as I feel that 2011SBS is less stable that 2008r2?
PLEASE NOTE: I do not have allowance to purchase more hardware, software or licences at this time.  The issues on the 2011SBS server affected Windows Server Backup Service, so restoring a backup is not an option.
I am looking for as much information as possible (I am experienced with some aspects of Server Technology however there are holes in my knowledge), links to step by step procedures for your recommendations would be great, I realise that there are likely
more than one ways around this, so any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks In Advance,
Dave's Computers.

Might try them over here.

  • RV180 settings to use Windows 2011 SBS

I have an RV180W router and I am trying to use the Windows 2011 SBS. It seems like I setup everything properly in order to use the remote access, but when I try to log on from home, I don't have any luck. According to Window's instructions, here's what I have setup on the router side:
    1) I turned on UPnP. (they say to either do port forwarding, or UPnP, but I found on the Windows SBS that I had to do both in order for it to say it was working)
    2) I have created port forward rules for:
http - port 80 - server as destination ip
https - port 443 - server as destination ip
rdp (custom service) - port 4125 - server as destination ip
    3) I have set the server to a static ip.
It seems like I have done everything necessary to make it so that I can connect, but when I go to the *********.remotewebaccess.com from home, I can't connect. When I go to that same link on the LAN, it works just fine.
I'm not sure if it is a factor or not, but I also have setup a Gateway to Gateway with 2 RV180's.
Anyone with experience in setting up Windows 2011 SBS & the RV180 to work together? Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks!!!
    Ben

So here's some more juicy info that points directly toward a setting within RV180 being the problem. Yesterday I swapped my RV180 with a Linksys WRT54G and the remote access with the SBS works great!
So I know that it is a setting within the RV180 that is causing the SBS remote access to not work. Any thoughts on what setting would be different from the RV180 and the default settings of WRT54G?
Thanks in advance for anyone's thoughts on this!

  • Enabling Windows services, creating a PDC and a BDC

    Hi all,
We have an existing ODM here running 10.4.11. It is also acting as our PDC. We have a single windows client running XP Pro SP2 and was able to join the domain just fine. I have another windows client running XP Pro SP2 on VMWare Fusion 2. I cannot join this domain. I get an error message that the username cannot be found when trying to join the domain using the directory admin's credentials.
I am also trying to set up another xserve on 10.4.11 as a BDC to this domain. I have already configured it as an ODR. When trying to promote the server from standalone to BDC, I try authenticating as the local admin and get the following error message: "Error while writing setting (Unable to authenticate with the user name and password)." When trying to promote it using the directory administrators credentials I get the following error message: "Error while writing settings (Unable to join the domain)."
Please let me know what log files or conf files I'll need to post in order to help me out better. I do not have much experience with Samba administration so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA,
    Andrew

    Tony,
Yes I am authenticating with a Directory Administrator. SSH is enabled on the ODM. The ODM is also providing DNS. sudo changeip -checkhostname on the ODR (mackintosh) yields:
    Primary address = 192.XXX.1.XX
    Current HostName = mackintosh.mnn.org
    DNS HostName = mackintosh.mnn.org
The names match. There is nothing to change.
I can do forward and reverse lookups of the server from any workstation in the office. I made sure that the ODM's IP (primary DNS server) is listed in network prefs. There is an A and PTR record for this server in DNS.
The only other service this computer is running before I attempt to promote to ODR is AFP.

  • SBO Windows clear after few seconds and users has to re-type

After any window is opened, you can start typing. However, after few seconds the form clears and the users has to start typing again. It is quite annoying and affects productivity. It only happens on SBO to a couple of users though.
    Thanks for your suggestion,

  • FQDN behind NAT'd router and OD Master assistance request

I have a static IP (1) from my ISP that is assigned via PPPoE.
Because of the PPPoE, I use a SOHO router as a my gateway, and NAT the necessary ports to 192.168.1.10
I would like to setup a FQDN and OD Master (with Kerberos) at 192.168.1.10, but am unsure how to do this. I've setup FQDN with a global IP before, but never one with NAT'd to a private IP. I think I can get DNS "working", but not in a good enough state for OD Master with Kerberos.
Does someone have a setup guide for this situation?

  • How to convert per device cal to per user cal

    Dear Sir
We've installed windows server 2008 r2 on our server & configured rdsh for the same(as per user cal). I want to  use my erp software through rds from my other office. at a same time i want to use  it from my 3 machine remotly, pls advise me
which rds cal should i purchased for 3 machine. should i purchased 3 rds cals per device or per user,
I have recently purchased 1 no per device cal open license from my distributor(microsoft part no.6vc-02071).
If i want to use per user cal method, is it possible to convert this device cal to user cal , please tell me the steps for the same.

    Hi,
I think you may need to purchase Per User RDS CALs. As your users need to access the three machines remotely.
In addition, it is possible to convert.

    Hi,
Firstly, please don't expose your contact information in the forum for security reason.
Did you have Software Assurance on your CALs? If yes, you can renew for the device type of CALs when you renew your Software Assurance coverage.
In addition, I recommend you to call a Microsoft Partner in your region for pricing information at the link below:

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard and Essentials User CAL's

I've been running Windows Server 2012 Essentials in an organization that until recently stayed within the 25 user 50 network device limit specified by the license. Eventually we've grown beyond that. Since the Server 2012 Essentials machine had a non-transferable
OEM license I decided not to waste it by doing an in-place migration to Server 2012 Standard, and instead set up a new server with freshly purchased Server 2012 R2 Standard and migrated Active Domain roles to it, leaving the original server as a part of a
    fail-over cluster.
We purchased 30 User CAL's for the 2012 R2, as required for 25+ staff members.
Now I am curious. The 2 servers that we have right now (2012 R2 Standard and 2012 Essentials) both maintain the same Active Directory and manage the same pool of users and workstations. Does that mean that the primary server with 30 User CAL's takes dominance
and sets the limit as to how many people are allowed to access the network. Or does it become a combination of purchased 30 CAL's + 25 Users hard-wired into the 2012 Essential edition?
Do these servers have to run separate domains with segregated pools of users in order to be license compliant for 30+ users or can they exist within the same same domain preserving individual user limits? What if the 2012 Essentials server maintains
one office location with fewer than 25 staff and the Standard R2 2012 server runs another office with fewer than 30 staff, while both offices are linked via a VPN for the purpose of sharing 3rd party licenses? Do individual user limits apply, or is it still
    30 users max?
To sum up the question, I'd like to know whether I'd need to buy more user CAL's when we reach more than 30 staff at 1 or possibly 2 office locations.
Oh, and the device limit! 2012 R2 Standard under user CAL licensing scheme has no machine limits. Essentials is always capped at 50. When running one active directory, what's the legally allowed number of devices on the network? I assume it's unlimited.
    Thanks.

    Thank you for the reply.
My question then is how to transition while preferably keeping both physical servers.
Should a 2012 Standard key be purchased additionally for an in-place transition of 2012 Essentials machine to 2012 Standard (which at this point is as good as a fresh install)? Until then, should the Essentials 2012 server be taken offline entirely?
What about the situation where I described both servers running segregated networks with their own pools of users, only connected via a VPN for 3rd party license sharing? Is that configuration supported?
Also, if the configurations is unsupported, why are the servers able to share roles in first place? Why isn't there a software mechanism preventing interaction? What configuration do the servers themselves assume is in place?
    Thanks again.

  • Window SBS server 2008 and window server 2008 R2 on the same domain

    Hi all,
I am a person only work for linux system. Recently i work for my company that using microsoft technologie. So i have a lot of trouble. Could you please help me and below are my big troble that i have met:
In my system, i have the first window SBS server 2008 run on our domain. However my organization growth up and we have more than 150 users and mailbox of exchange server 2007. So i do not want to use my sbs server 2008 anymore.
I am going to install a window server 2008 R2 64 bit and join it into the same domain with sbs server 2008. It will be replicate the username, dns, OU and group policy...After that i will tranfer FSMO role to new server and i will demote then remove the
    sbs server.
My boss say that i should not use this solution because window server sbs can not run with any other kinds of window server 2008 (R2, standard, enterprise...) and it will automatically shutdown the main server after a couple of days.
Someone have experience can help me. I am so confuse now

Maybe this will also help to better understand the steps involved:

And remember, as long as you don't move the PDC to one of the new DCs, you can leave the SBS 2008 up indefinitely. But I would remove Exchange 2007 off it right away once I've migrated the mailboxes and public folders, otherwise
you will get yourself into an Exchange coexistence scenario which is much more complex to configure and support because of the CAS differences, changing the URLs on the old one to "legacy.domain.com," getting a new UC/SAN cert with the correct
names on it, and more. Believe me, you really don't want to coexist them. The only time I've coexisted Exchange versions is during large migrations, such as 500 or more. Otherwise, I just migrate the mailboxes over a weekend and get it done with.

  • To install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP1

    Dear Sir,
Presently we have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP 1. And now i would like to install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on this server. I have 25 digit product key of Windows Server
2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services User CAL (20). Downloaded this product key from our MSDN Subscriptions.
Kindly suggest me how to install (CAL server with product key that i have) and configure remote desktop services on my above existing server also how to point other server with my CAL server.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1. Install Remote Desktop Session Host and Remote Desktop Licensing Role Services using Server Manager.
    2. Open RD Licensing Manager (licmgr.exe), Activate your server, then install your license
    3. In RD Session Host Configuration (tsconfig.msc), set the Licensing mode to Per User and Specify your RD Licensing server name (itself).  If you want you may configure these two settings via group policy setting instead.  The path of the
group policy settings is Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing
    4. You may point other RDSH servers to your RD Licensing server using RD Session Host Configuration or via group policy as mentioned above.
    5. Optionally you may consider installing other Remote Desktop Role Services such as RD Gateway, RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker, etc.

I had 45 core cals which included windows, exchange, sharepoint, endpoint etc, which have been allocated to users.1: I have several mailboxes set up which are used for receiving emails from our website for eg [email protected] or group emails like [email protected] do not access file/print servers and have only been added as additional mailboxes on a users outlook.2: Ihave sales reps and engineers set up so they can access their email on mobile phones and ipads through an exchange account, again they do not access file servers etc. When we employ more staff I will buy a windows cal and exchange cal if they need email and access to the file server. If the end user only requires...

  • Will WS2012R2 User CALs be compatible with the next Windows Server CALs?

We plan to get a new server now and it will be installed with Windows Server 2012 R2. We will get also some User CALs.
I wanted to know if when we upgrade the server from Windows Server 2012 R2 to the next version of Windows Server, if those User CALs are still usable.
    Thank you

CALs are backward valid, not forward.
That means that if you have Windows 2008 CAL, you can access services on:
Windows 2008,Windows2003,Windows2000,WindowsNT, but not on Windows 2008R2,Windows 2012,Windows2012R2.

  • Use of User CAL in Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

We are using win server 2008 R2 server as domain controller.
Can we know how to use User CAL here in this scenario.

    Hi,
First install the licensing role service applicable to your operating system.
To install the RD Licensing role service
1.On the server on which you want to install the RD Licensing role service, open Server Manager. To open Server Manager, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
2.If the Remote Desktop Services role is not already installed:
In the left pane, right-click Roles, and then click Add Roles.
On the Before You Begin page of the Add Roles Wizard, click Next.
On the Select Server Roles page, select the Remote Desktop Services check box, and then click Next.
On the Remote Desktop Services page, click Next.
On the Select Role Services page, select the Remote Desktop Licensing check box, and then click Next.
If the Remote Desktop Services role is already installed:
In the left pane, expand Roles.
Right-click Remote Desktop Services, and then click Add Role Services.
On the Select Role Services page, select the Remote Desktop Licensing check box, and then click Next.
3.On the Configure Discovery Scope for RD Licensing page, you can specify a discovery scope for the license server. For more information, see Terminal Services License Server Discovery.
4.On the Configure Discovery Scope for RD Licensing page, you can also specify the location where the RD Licensing database will be stored. If you want to specify a database location other than the default location provided, click Browse.
Note that the database location must be a local folder on the computer on which the RD Licensing role service is being installed.
    5.Click Next.
6.On the Confirm Installation Selections page, verify that the RD Licensing role service will be installed, and then click Install.
7.On the Installation Progress page, installation progress is noted.
8.On the Installation Results page, confirm that installation of the RD Licensing role service succeeded, and then click Close.
To install and issue TS CALs or RDS CALs, you must first
activate the license server. When the license server is activated, Microsoft provides the license server with a limited-use digital certificate that validates server ownership and identity. Microsoft
uses the X.509 industry standard certificate for this purpose. Using this certificate, a license server can make subsequent transactions with Microsoft. To activate your license server, go to
Windows Terminal Services Licensing, a site designed to help you manage your license server and obtain client access license tokens.

"Hacked" is not my terminology, and I don't believe it's intended to be derogatory. What you describe is a perfectly legitimate reason to alter Hosts.
If your Mac still isn't working as expected after uninstalling Intego and Trend Micro, read on. The necessity to have a reliable backup cannot be overstated, since what you describe may be an indication of impending disk failure.

If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.
