Windows 2012 Datacenter R2 - Network Connections Confusion

I have recently created a 2012 Datacenter install with the goal to create virtualize test lab.
As part of the install two connections were created:
1. Labeled 'Ethernet' with Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch protocol enabled.
2 Labeled 'Network 2' vEthernet (....Controller - Virtual Switch) with the standard networking protocols enabled.
3. Network 2 interface is connected to the local area network.
Ethernet adapter vEthernet (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller - Virtual Switch):
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

I am confused with the purpose of the network connection "Ethernet" and Hyper-Virtual Switch protocol and how this relates the "network 2" interface. I uncertain which network connection is the physical connections.
I have tried to research this with "windows 2012 datacenter network connection configuration, setup, and etc.",  the results are a lot of the complex examination of setting of Hyper-V implementation, clusters, DHCP, and etc.
I hoping to locate information that will explain the fundamentals of these related technologies (tutorial, youtube videos, etc.).  Any helpful advice is welcome.

Hi,
Based on the information which you provide, you created an External virtual switch, which binds to the physical network adapter so that virtual machines can access a physical network.
->I am confused with the purpose of the network connection “Ethernet” and Hyper-Virtual Switch protocol and how this relates the “network 2” interface. I uncertain which network connection is the physical connections.
->Network 2 interface is connected to the local area network.
Based on your description, I suppose that you encountered some problems with understanding virtual network switch. When we install Hyper-V and create an external virtual network, the management operating system uses a new virtual network
adapter to connect to the physical network. The network connections consist of the original network adapter and the new virtual network adapter. The original physical network adapter does not have anything bound to it. However, the virtual network adapter
has all of the standard protocols and services bound to it. Here, the “vEthernet” is the new virtual network adapter, and the “Ethernet” was the original physical network adapter. Hyper-V binds the Virtual Network Service Protocol to the physical network adapter
when an external virtual network is created. So the “Ethernet” has the Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch only. The physical adapter was equal to a virtual switch at this moment, all networking traffic is routed though the virtual switch.
And to the physical machine, due to the physical adapter is a virtual switch now, so the new virtual network adapter is its network adapter now. So we can see the all TCP/IP configurations of vEthernet are the same with the local area
network.

  • Technet Windows 2012 DataCenter license question

The current Technet standard subscription provides 2 Windows 2012 Data Center licenses and 2 Windows 2012 Standard licenses. Each license has 10 activations. According to the license terms for Windows 2012 DataCenter Licenses you can run unlimited Windows
virtual machines under W2012 DataCemter. It seems since Technet is for testing it would be reasonable to set up a test lab where you would use the 1 of the Data Center Licenses for the host and then have many W2012 virtual servers on that host.
My question is how do you do this with the licenses that are given? The most you can get is 20 activations which is far from unlimited. And that is assuming you aren’t testing things like deployment (which is one of the things I need to do) which can burn
through license activations pretty quickly. How do you have unlimited virtual machines under your W2012 Technet DataCenter Licenses? Obviously you can have them in unactivated status but I am talking about fully activated servers. Keeping them unactivated
is even somewhat tricky as I believe the new default status is Auto Activate.
Are the Technet DataCenter Licenses really full licenses? I understand why Microsoft is dialing back on Technet but you should be able to at least fully use what you are given within the terms of the license. Am I missing something?
    Roger

    Joseph,
Thanks for the reply. I read the link you provided and they did a nice job of cleaning up and simpliiy the terms of use. However, it says
Using the software and other benefits
Using software. Your use of the software is subject to the license terms provided with the software, such as click-through license terms, except for any changes to those terms that
    are provided in this agreement.
You may not use the software if you do not have an active subscription.
You may install and use the software on your devices only to evaluate the software.
You may not use the software in a live operating environment, in a staging environment, or with data that has not been backed up.
You may not use the software for software development or in an application development environment.
The components of each software program are licensed as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on different devices.
You may not share, transfer, resell, or assign your subscription or the software.
The the terms provided with Data Center allow for Unlimited use. So what am I missing? Did somone just not realize this when they included the Data Center licenses in Technet?

  • Windows 8 - Right Click Network Connection Properties - An unexpected error occurred

    Hi,
I'm encountering an issue with a relatively new Windows 8 Pro x64 install (Been running about a week).
When attempting to right click on the Network Connection and select "Properties", I receive the following error:
    "An unexpected error occurred"
The error also occurs when trying to disable the adapter. The network connection DOES work though. I have received an IP from my DHCP router and have network/internet access.
I have tried the Windows XP/7 "fix":
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\netshell.dll, and then click OK.
    3. In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
Test to see if you can open the properties of the network connection in the Network Connections folder.
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\ole32.dll, and then click OK.
    3. In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
    4. Restart the computer.
Both did NOT work. I have also attempted uninstalling and reinstalling the Network Driver. I have also tried "SFC /scannow".
    Neither of these worked either.

  • Enabling remote desktop access to a simple windows 2012 datacenter edition server

    Hi,
I am a complete noob to server administration. I installed a windows 2012 server initially as a workgroup. All i need is to enable a user to remotely access my server(using remote desktop). The firewall that I use is Gibraltar.
I read that to enable remote desktop services my server has to be part of a domain. So i promoted my server to a domain name controller. Using active directoty I added a user to the domain. I also read that to make remote desktop more secure, I have to request
the user to login through a VPN.
Now here is where I am completely lost. Do i really need to move my server to a domain, if the user just wants access to this server and nothing else? Should i restrict remote desktop access only through VPN
and if so, how can i do that? Further, the server dashboard gives me notifications about 'remote desktop licensing' not configured. We got the software as a campus licensing and I am not sure how to configure the remote license server. Any opinions are highly
    appreciated.

If you're just trying to setup this to allow administration access then I don't believe you need it to be a member of a domain. There's a difference between allowing remote desktop access for administration, and setting up full terminal services access for
multiple users. The latter requires a lot more work and licensing unlike the former.
To simply allow admin access, open an explorer window and right click on Computer, then select properties. In the System window that appears, click Remote settings on the left. Now in the bottom half of the window select "Allow remote connections to this
computer" and leave the option requiring NLA in place. Click Select Users..., you'll see that the administrator user already has permissions to connect, so if you're only planning to connect with that then you're finished, otherwise find those users you
    want to grant access.

  • Hyper-V Windows 2012 r2 Poor network performance

    Hi,
Since that I installed Windows 2012 R2 and Hyper-v, I notice that is very slow performing copy operations from the VMs to the physical machine (appears to be lock to 10MB). Firs I though that this issue was only between the VMs and the parent OS, now I realized
that when copying between this Hyper-v physical host and another physical host in the same subnet I also get only 10MB of speed.
How do I unlock this 10MB limit??
The switch and all NICs are GIGABIT capable and before using Windows 2012 r2, using the same hardware boxes I was doing 400MB of transfers between physical hosts and VMs??!!
    Thank you.

I had the exact same issue with the same AR8151 NIC on my Alienware, only I'm running Windows 8.1.
I have a VM with both an external (to the AR8151) and an internal NIC which serves as both a domain controller and router (RRAS) for my other VMs (which only have Internal interfaces).  There is no VMQ setting on the adapter, and I messed around with
the offload/RSS settings, but performance would drop whenever this VM would be running.  (Internet speed test would go from 95Mbps downstream to about 24Mbps.).  When I paused or shut down the VM, performance would return to normal.
I found the issue to be an errant entry in my route table which I have no idea how it happened.  A second default route was created which used the internal IP of the VM with a lower metric.  Simply deleting the route corrected the performance issue.

  • Build and Capture - Windows 2012 no longer possible

    Dear all
We are using SCCM SP1 and facing since May 2013 the following problem:
Our - until May 2013 working - Task Sequence to build and capture our Windows 2012 Datacenter Image does not capture when we install updates during this sequence.
    The following steps are working:
    - Restart in Windows PE
    - Partition Disk 0
    - Apply Operating System
    - Apply Windows Settings
    - Apply Network Settings
    - Setup Windows and Configuration Manager
If the next step is Install Updates, it installs the updates, reboot twice, shows again the status of the task sequence and then we can see the login screen from Windows 2012 instead of starting the step "Prepare Configuration Manager
    Client".
As soon as we disable the Install Updates step, the task sequence can go to "Prepare Configuration Manager Client" and can successfully capture a new wim.
What could be the problem? Thanks for any hints.
    best
    JBAB

check your windowsupdate.log and see what updates it's installing, one or more of them is causing a reboot which the task sequence does not expect or like and that is probably your issue, remove that update(s) from the deployment and start again

  • Windows 2012 ISO customization

    Hi All,
I have a Windows 2012 x64 ISO, and the size of the ISO is 5.7 GB and it has the following below editions
    1. Windows 2012 Standard edition
    2. Windows 2012 Standard Core Edition
    3. Windows 2012 Datacenter Edition
    4. Windows 2012 Datacenter Core Edition
We are trying to build a custom ISO only with 1 edition and want to reduce the ISO size by removing the 2,3,4 editions mentioned in the above table
We just want a simple "Windows 2012 Standard Edition ISO" size needs to be reduced to a great extent
We are using Deployment Workbench where in certain drivers, packages, updates are being incorporated into the ISO and later trying to build an ISO from it.
When we IMPORT the OS into the Deployment Share in the workbench we see 4 editions, each edition size is around 1GB.
We deleted the 3 editions and built a ISO media out of it but found the ISO to be around 5GB again.
Can anyone please suggest on how to delete the editions and build a customized ISO including only "Windows 2012 Standard Edition"
    Thank you,
    Rexton

    Hi Rexton84,
I agree with Tim, and you can export the wim edition then use Oscdimg Command-Line Options to create the ISO.

  • Network Connection error when Trying to Install Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

Thank you to anyone who can help me out here. I have a brand new machine with known working wifi and wired ethernet adapters (works under Windows 8.1) I am attempting to install Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2. During the install process, the system connects
to the internet to download updates to help along the install. No problem here. Further down the road after restarting several times and now during the "Configuring Windows Server Essentials" step of the install, I am told "There is no network
connection. Please fix the connection issue and try again."
When troubleshooting the connection, I am told that the wifi adapter drivers may not be installed. I have a wireless card in the machine and have also tried disabling the wifi adapter and have been connected successfully via the ethernet port this whole
    time.
Help, I'm stuck and have been to this point in the install 4-5 times already.
    Thank you.

Is this a laptop?  Can you remove the wifi? Disable it in BIOS?
Does the wifi have an IP and internet when it throws the error?
BTW, when the wizard ask about updates say no.  Takes way too long and does not help anything
Change the binding order and put the wired on top.
    The Steps?
Just open your Network and Sharing Center. (Change adapter settings)
Press an ALTkey on your keyboard to show the menu bar.
    Click on the Advancedmenu
    choose Advanced Settings option
Adjust your binding order for your NICs to ensure your wired ones are at the TOP

  • Windows 2012 R2 hyper-v network unable to connect to outside resources

Today, I went and upgraded a Windows 2008 R2 machine to 2012 R2.  I did a clean install and have never seen this problem before in this fashion.  It is a HP 370G6 with an HP NC375I quad card.  Only 1 adapter is in use, so it is not teamed.
After installing, none of my VM's will communicate to outside resources.  I got the Windows 2012 R2 update package from HP dated 4/14.  My virtual switch manager is set to Allow management operating system to share this adapter.  The adapter
type is set to External.  After playing around with 1 guest, I finally have it communicating with the rest of the network.  However, my other guests will not.  I have checked all IP's multiple times, no differences but the last octet.
I can not figure out what is allowing my 1 guest to now communicate, but the others to not.  It is driving me crazy!  I have tried adding and removing the adapter several times, and also tried using the Legacy NIC to no avail

    Hi,
    The external
virtual switch vm can can’t access the outside resource issue we found most of them were pointing to the VMQ, we can try to disable the VMQ, here is the steps:
    Powershell command:
    Disable-NetAdapterVmq –Name NIC_CARD_NAME
You can refer to the following article for more about the VMQ:

  • On Windows 2012 Terminal Server Outlook fails to connect to Exchange 2013

I have a new install of Windows 2012.  I have two physical servers.  One is a W2012 std Domain Controller ("DC").  The Second is configured as W2012 HyperV  ("HV").  Under HV I have
two VMs.  One VM is W2012/Exchange 2013 ("ExchVM) and the other is W2012/Terminal Server ("VMTS").  All systems are behind a firewall appliance.  Exchange is working via Outlook and OWA internally and externally.  The self
created SSL must be installed manually on external machines since it comes up as an untrusted certificate.  Once installed remote outlook works and OWA works.  I have configured the terminal server and I am able
to login remotely as various users under my "TS group".  The problem is when ever I attempt to open Outlook for the 1st time, it fails to connect to the exchange server.   (Open Outlook 2013, click next
on the splash screen, "Yes" Add an Email Account splash screen, click next, Auto Account screen populates NAME and Email Address correctly, click next, Searching for mail server settings..., check on establishing network connection, check on searching

connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable.  Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."   I am connected in RDS from offsite, and from the RD session I can access shared folders on ExchVM and DC.  I have
tried have verified the server Exchange server name is correct via "Get=ClientAccessServer" command.  I have also tried to use the guid via "Get-Mailbox
ALIAS | fl name, exchangeguid.  Keep in mind all desktop users on the network are connecting to Outlook without issue.
I would appreciate any thoughts on solving this issue.

    Hi,
According to your workaround, it seems that the Outlook Anywhere configuration in Outlook client is not correct when using the Autodiscover service.
Once you connected to Exchange server by manually settings, please run Test E-mail AutoConfiguration tool in external Outlook client to check the autodiscover service:
open Outlook - press CTRL key - right click on the Outlook icon from right bottom corner taskbar - Test Email AutoConfiguration. Put your email address - uncheck use guessmart and secure guessmart authentication - click Test to check your Autodiscover service.
Please check the Log tab and confirm whether the Autodiscover service is connected successfully. Also confirm if the connection issue happens to all external users when they open Outlook for the 1st time. In Exchange server, please make sure
autodiscover.domain.com has been included in your Exchange certificate which is assigned with IIS service.

  • Remote Desktop Connection Mouse Slow with Windows 2012
