Windows 2012 Group Policy

I have Win Server 2012 R2 domain Controller and want to disable the internet access for the domain users through group policy.
I tried to find the solution in web, but not getting proper information and unable to find the proxy option in GP.
Please look into the same and help me on configuring the same...

No, it isn't - "Firefox Mobile" :)
You need a real proxy with proper user administration.

Windows 2012 Group Policy Option missing for Windows 7 Client

Hi there,
We have a deployment with a windows 2012 DC and various Windows 7 clients.
I am trying to set up a group policy on the 2012 DC to configure the Windows 7 clients and basically disable the Aero feature.
The "Do not allow desktop composition" is the one I need to enable and this would sit under Admin Templates > Windows Components > Desktop Windows Manager.
In Windows 2012 Group Policy editor this does not show...does anyone know how I can do this to a remote Windows 7 machine from 2012 DC?
Note if it helps on a windows 7 machine you can also disable the service "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager”
to achieve the same thing BUT when looking through the Group Policy again I can’t seem to find this!!

Install RSAT and edit on W7. Or copy all W7 admx/adml templates to the
central store.

Import Windows XP Group Policy into Windows 7?

Is it possible to import a Windows XP Group Policy into Windows 7? It seems ZCM will not let you edit the XP policy from Windows 7 even though you can apply the policy to a Windows 7 Workstation and have the policy applied without issue. I'm still researching it, but the search terms return many Active Directory results.
ZCM 10.3.3 on Linux. and eDirectory only.

How do I set firefox as the default browser in Windows Server 2012 Group Policy Editor?

Hello, I am unable to set firefox as the default browser despite multiple different attempts to do so using group policy.
I have:
- Set a registry command (targeted at 32/64 via a WMI query) to reset the opening command as shown below:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\command
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -osint -url "%1"
- Set a powershell logon script to run (that does run):
firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser
Despite setting the above it seems the client computers browsers are not affected by the settings above. When the script runs or if I run the command above a UAC window pops up and requests that I accept the command (for the setDefaultBrowser) but even if I click yes as an administrator it does nothing.
Since GPO in 2012 has changed perhaps there is something that I am missing? Do I need to somehow disable Windows Internet Explorer from achieving default browser status?
Please do not reply if you will suggest that I use Internet Explorer Maintenance (since this function in GPO has been disabled since IE10)
My DC is Server 2012, my client computers are Win7 32/64.

The above reply does not take into account that I am trying to use GROUP POLICY EDITOR to make it the default browser.

Windows Server 2012 Group Policy Block USB Storage devices @ User Level Not getting applied on a Domain Client machine with Windows Server 2008 R2. Why?

Hello,
I have a Windows Server 2012 R2.
I have configured the Group Policy on it to block the usage of USB - Storage Devices @ user level on the client machines. It works properly for my Windows 7 client machines but it's not working on one of the machine having Windows Server 2008 R2 installed
on it (this machine is also a domain client in the same domain).
I will really be thankful if anyone can suggest some solution to this issue.
Please feel free to write back in-case I have missed anything obvious to be shared.

Windows 7 Group Policy Processing - EventID 1058

I am having an issue with Windows 7 clients refreshing group policy. When I run gpupdate the user policy refreshes and the moves on to the computer policies but fails displaying the error below. Replication topology checks out, dcdiag returns
no errors and sysvol permissions look ok too. Curiously the same policies apply just fine on windows xp pro systems. The Domain Controller is running Server 2008 Enterprise Edt R2 SP1, I see no 1030 eventid's on the domain controllers as others
frequently report with this error. The domain is running at Windows Server 2003 functional level but I have creaded a PolicyDefinitions folder in the sysvol for admx files etc. Where to go from here? Does anyone have any suggestions/insight
as to what the issue may be?
The sysvol and the gpt.ini file is accessible from the Windows 7 client using UNC path.

I shortened this down a good bit but here is the gist of it, my question is which context/user/account is being denied access to the .ini files?  I have never used the streams utility but I'll give it a whirl and report back what I get. Most of
the cannot be accessed are probably just policies that are not applicable to the machine but the gpt.ini errors are baffling me.

Windows Update Group Policy Settings?

I browsed through SCCM 2012 documentation for an answer of what to set in a GPO when wanting to use SCCM 2012 SP1 to handle updates.
At the moment I have:
WSUS/Reporting pointing to wsus server and its appropriate ports
Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation: Enabled
All signed updates from intranet Microsoft Updates: Enabled
Configure Automatic Updates: Enabled
Configure automatic Updating - 4 Auto download and schedule the install
Scheduled install day: Every Friday
Scheduled install time: 21:00
Enabling Windows Update Power Management to auto wakeup the system to install Enabled
No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations: Enabled
Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installation: Disabled
I didn't see any hint, perhaps it is there and I missed it, on what might be the prescribed settings for a GPO.
What is happening is Windows 8ish is drawing a band across the screen and reporting that your computer needs to reboot; and then reboots. From what I could tell in the WindowsUpdate.log file is that round the time it was observed rebooting smsexec
requested a reboot. But oddly I also saw in the Windows Update log was a reboot was scheduled to expire on the 26th, two days after the observed behavior and I also saw that other reboot requests either expired or had been scheduled.
What I have recently done to various Windows Update deployments was to remove the check boxes for Deadline behavior to prevent Software Updates and System restarts outside the Maintenance Window and also checked Device restart behavior
Suppress system restart on the following devices Servers and Workstations.
At the moment I would like to figure out what the GPO settings should be and also how to determine what had requested reboot and when and if the reboot actually happened.

Windows 2008 Group Policy not working in Windows 8.1

Hi ,
We found that the GPO settings created in Windows 2008 is not working in a Windows 8.1 machine.
One example is the proxy settings.
We confirmed from gpresult that the GPO is in the list but checking the actual proxy settings, it is not applied.

How did we configure the proxy settings, using Internet Explorer Maintenance? If it is this case, just as Martin suggested, we can’t use IEM to manage
IE 10 and IE 11. However, we can configure the proxy setting via Group Policy Preferences (GPP).

Server 2012 Group Policy Templates installed on Server 2008 R2

Setup: 2 x Domain Controllers running Server 2K8 R2 SP1
We are currently running our environment with IE9 and want to upgrade to IE11. However 2K8 R2 group policy doesnt support IE11 unless you upgrade your DC's to this version of IE. We are not going to deploy IE11 all at once but instead as we reimage or replace
PC's.
My question is can install http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36991 Server 2012 templates on 2008 R2 and have the ability to apply GP objects to both versions of the browser? Will it's possibly make some of the current GP's ineffective
by erasing some settings?
Maybe there is a better was for me to do this? Any help on this would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Yes this can be done and its advisable to install the latest and greatest admx templates, please be aware that from IE10 upwards IE maintenance is deprecated and applied via a GPP, id advise you create a central store for your Admx and adml files if not
already done so

Removing Windows 2003 Group Policy user settings

I'm having a difficult time finding what to do.
I have a windows 2003 domain with many GP settings. One of which I can't find. It has to do with the favorites bar in IE. When a user from a certain OU logs on to any computer with any Windows OS, any favorites saved either to their Favorites
bar, or even in the Favorites folder, disappear on next logon. This happens all the time.
I thought I would create another OU with a BLANK GP and blocked inheritance. I moved a user from the original OU into the test OU, replicated the changes, and rebooted the computer on which the user would log on. The user logged on and the settings
from the original OU still applied.
I created a completely new user in the test OU and no settings were applied, which is what I want.
What is the best way to remove the original OU settings from a user that was in that original OU?

Thanks for the quick response. There are no scripts that run with the former GPO.
I did run RSOP.MSC from the test computer and received an error about not being able to read the computer settings, but the user settings were displayed. The settings the account received were from "Software Restriction Policy" and "Public
Key Policy". Nothing shows about any IE settings. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening and where these dang policies are coming from.
I've even gone as far as to go to the original GPO, and in Delegation, deny the Apply Group Policy permission to the user.
And the only policy that is applying is the test policy. The others show as either Disabled(link), or Blocked(SOM).

Windows 2008R2 Group Policy Printers

We recently deployed our Printers via GP clients are all Windows 7 64bit. We have both 2003 and 2008R2 domain controllers - dhcp server and FSMO roles are on the 2008 DC.
This is also where the printers are installed. For some reason every since we installed these printers, logon time has been increased. Even after the print drivers have been installed on the clients. Also I have noticed that when selecting a printer from
Office (2010 32bit) that it takes forever for it to become ready.
We do not have any network issues. And the problem did not exist when we deployed the same printers via a vbs logon script. Any help/suggestions? I read somewhere that on 2000/2003 server you could apply something (GPO/Script) for clients to continue to
logon while GP was being applied. Not sure if that can help me.
Also not sure why it is taking so long for the printers to go to ready from the clients side?

This may be stupid question, but have you tried a scenario where you distribute templates to user computers (with a scheduled task) and then you add AdminTemplatePath registry key with value of "%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\DRM\Templates" ? Of course, if
template distribution is done correctly, to get registry settings working, you should be able to see some .xml files (your RMS templates) in your %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\DRM\Templates folder. You can use this site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771971(v=ws.10).aspx
Please note that AdminTemplatePath has type be Expandable String Value and if you have 64bit OS (not with xp), you must also configure the registry entries in the Wow6432Node located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wow6432Node\.

After migrating a windows 7 machine using ADMT Group policy shows the the computer is from the new domain but user is from old domain

We have migrated machines using ADMT tool but we have found some window 7 machines Group policy issues. We see that the computer GP is getting from the new domain but the users profile still has the old domain GP information. Any help on
removing the old GP objects and forcing the new domain User policy would be great. We have tried the basic troubleshooting gpupdate /force reboot etc.

Sorry for the delayed response.
First, please verify whether these domain users you mentioned belong to old domain or new domain.
If they belong to old domain the GP is right with no problem. If they belong to new, try following suggestions.
Please test these steps in one of the problematic computer. If it worked, then go on for others.
To avoid unexpected problems, please backup your register keys before following steps:
Open regedit.exe, and delete following keys:
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft Key (looks like a folder).
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft Key.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects Key.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies key
Exit the registry and restart.
Note: HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE & HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Group policy - 'install pending - reboot required'

I have deployed software using GPO - Computer Configuration - Assigned software. This has worked with flying colors for most computers on our domain - all running Windows 7 x86. Only a select few computers have failed to get this software installed.
When I checked RSOP.msc, I get a message that the install is pending and awaiting reboot. These machines have rebooted many times and yet the same message appears on RSOP and the software has yet to actually install.
Where is it getting hung up? Is there some sort of install cache that I can clear on the PC so GPO will try to send the install from scratch?
We have tried several things to try to isolate variables:
Tried gpupdate /force - I am prompted to reboot, and when I do so the software does not install
Checked GP Result - shows that this software install policy was "applied" to the computer, yet it isn't installed
Checked RSOP.msc, I get a message that the install is pending and awaiting reboot - reboots do not resolve this
Added permissions for "everyone" at the distribution point NTFS and share (I doubt it's permissions anyway since installs were successful on most computers before we added more permissions)
Tried adding a Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Group Policy/Startup policy processing wait time - 20 seconds (I tried this after reading this forum question -

Furthermore, every test I try to manufacture grabs the GPO and installs the software with success. The only machines that fail are machines that aren't easy for me to access as people are using them during the workday.

You may activate appmgmt debug logging and then post the resulting log
file: In HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Diagnostics,
set AppmgmtDebugLevel (REG_DWORD) to 0x9b and examine
%windir%\debug\usermode\appmgmt.log after the next reboot.
If no other solution, you may try to cleanup the appmgmt history key so
that all SW deployment GPOs will be processed again: Rename
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\AppMgmt and
recreate empty.
